The New South Wales economy is set to grow slower than the rest of the country - weighed down by bigger mortgages and rising interest rates. A month out from the state budget, the Minns government's warning there'll have to be spending restraint. But, it is hiring an extra one thousand nurses using cash it's already tucked away.

00:27with a ratio of one nurse to every four patients in general, surgical and specialty wards.

00:35As a previous ED nurse, seeing the ED roll out of safe staffing levels has brought great relief.
00:42Close to a billion dollars was previously set aside for the project.
00:45Now a new round of recruitment will begin.
00:48It'll be well over probably a thousand nurses over the next nine to twelve months.
00:52But future spending on public services could have to be reined in
00:55with the state's economy losing momentum.
00:58It was forecast to grow by two and a half percent.
01:01That's now been slashed to just one percent.
