SA ambulance ramping surges to third-highest level on record as government 'falls desperately short' of its promise

South Australian patients spent 4,791 hours ramped in ambulances outside public hospitals in May — more than one thousand hours higher than the previous month — as the health system continues to struggle despite billions in extra funding.

00:29As the government eyes new builds, the state's existing hospitals are swamped with demand.

00:34Last month, ambulances spent just under 4,800 hours on hospital ramps.

00:40That's 1,000 hours more than April's figure and the state's third highest ramping record.

00:46We've got emergency cases which are waiting two, three hours on a ramp.

00:50More recently, we've had one that's actually gone into cardiac arrest on the ramp while waiting to get in.

00:56I'm really worried about what this means for winter if we're seeing these type of ramping numbers right now.

01:02The government says bed block is partly to blame.

01:05There are currently more than 240 elderly patients in Adelaide hospitals waiting for aged care beds.

01:12It's frustrating but we are hiring every possible doctor and nurse.

01:17We're opening every possible bed but we've got people stuck in hospital who don't need to be there

01:22because they're waiting for a federal aged care bed.

01:24The recruitment that they've had recently has helped meet the demand

01:29but it's not building any capacity for us in the future.

01:32The government's recent budget shows it'll pour a further $1.9 billion into the health system over the next five years.
