00:00The crux of this issue is the fact there is fundamentally not enough aged care places for our aging population here in Queensland and it's the situation that's mirrored right across the country.
00:13In Queensland we were told yesterday by the state's health minister that there's more than a thousand aged care patients currently waiting for a place in an aged care residency in hospitals.
00:23Now these patients, most of them aren't actually sick, they just can't receive the care they need at home.
00:29So while they wait for a place they are taking up beds in hospitals, those acute beds.
00:34Now of course this is not the right place for these aging patients, it causes incredible strain on both them and their families.
00:41More often than not they're being taken away from their communities to hospitals far afield from where they actually live.
00:48Now we've also been told that this is coming at a massive cost to Queensland taxpayers, about $2.5 million every single day to keep these patients in hospitals.
00:58Now that's why the Queensland Government is calling on the Federal Government to intervene here.
01:03Now the Federal Government is responsible for approving each and every bed that providers can offer in aged care facilities.
01:10So the State Government here in Queensland along with most of the other states and territories right across the country are calling for more construction of these beds.
01:19And considering across Australia in the next decade, one in five Australians will be over the age of 65.
01:26Our aging population is something that's no doubt going to give us grief in the coming years if this problem is not rectified soon.
01:33this time isn't going to be over the age of 70 people.
