Royal Mint unveils 'Lord of the Rings' 50 pence coin to mark film's 25th anniversary

Britain's Royal Mint, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP), unveiled on Wednesday a new "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" 50 pence coin to mark the 2001 film's 25th anniversary. The coin's design centers on the 'One Ring' from filmmaker Peter Jackson's Academy Award-winning film, which is the source of power behind the whole fantasy saga created by author J. R. R. Tolkien. The 50 pence coin, which goes on sale on Wednesday from £15 (roughly $20), is the first of seven planned in a collection to celebrate each 25th anniversary respectively of all three "Lord of the Rings" films, including "The Two Towers" (2002) and "The Return of the King" (2003), across the next three years.

00:57So, let's go.
01:02.
01:40and we also have a lot of different parts of the country that we have.
01:43We are building a lot of different parts.
01:47We are building a lot of different parts from the island.
01:50We are building a lot of different parts.
02:24So, let's go.
02:39The benefit of having the One Ring as a theme is that it's so instantly recognisable.
02:45It really ties it back to the movies and the stories and it tells the story instantly.
02:51So it works perfectly on something like a 50p where you can put that small detail on
02:56it and people will instantly know what it is you're talking about.
02:59I was really keen to use the Elvish lettering as part of the coinage design, one because
03:03it's beautiful lettering and calligraphy and two because it can add a real element of dynamism
03:08and movement to the coin.
03:09So when I was framing the ring I was looking at how I could utilise or use the lettering
03:15to really add to it and I found it by including two independent rings that were almost radiating
03:23from each other.
03:24It kind of gives us a sense of movement from the coin and it really gives us a sense of
03:30movement in the design because of the angles and the fixing things of the letters themselves.
04:03So let's get started.
04:04Let's get started.
04:05Thank you, everyone.
