00:00Imagine if we could stop global warming just by doing research on the internet.
00:05It seems impossible, yet it's one of Ecosia's promises.
00:09Since its creation in 2009, they have planted 212 million trees thanks to user searches.
00:17Ecosia is a search engine like Google, Bing or Yahoo.
00:21You are most likely using Google, and that's normal.
00:24With over 80% market share, Google is the dominant search engine in the world.
00:30Ecosia is a European search engine whose goal is to plant as many trees as possible thanks to
00:36to user-generated revenue.
00:38You may have already heard about it on TV or on social media.
00:42They make money in the same way as Google.
00:45When you do searches, they show you advertisements.
00:48For example, if I search for Snack on Google or Ecosia, I might find it somewhere on my page.
00:55An advertisement for Amazon.
00:57And thanks to this advertising, they earn about half a cent.
01:00This half-cent is not going to finance millions of trees.
01:03But if we multiply this half-cent by the number of users and their searches, we quickly arrive at
01:09millions of euros.
01:10Google uses this money to innovate and then returns it to its shareholders.
01:15But that's quite normal, all companies do that.
01:17The difference with Ecosia is that Ecosia doesn't belong to anyone.
01:22And the consequence is that they have no income to pay back to people.
01:25So every month you can check the financial reports and see the money spent on reforestation.
01:33With 20 million users, they were able to finance the planting of 220 million trees worldwide.
01:39Imagine for a moment that Ecosia had as many users as Google.
01:43That would be about 2 billion people worldwide.
01:46This would help finance the planting of 22 billion trees worldwide.
01:51According to some estimates, this would allow us to absorb 15% of our total CO2 emissions.
01:58So of course, changing our search engine isn't going to completely offset global warming
02:04climate.
02:04But it does contribute a little bit.
02:07And now we can ask ourselves why not everyone uses Ecosia.
02:11The reason is simple.
02:12The results on Ecosia are much less comprehensive and less precise than on Google.
02:17On Google, we have a huge number of features already integrated, such as weather and restaurants that appear in Google Maps.
02:24or, at the moment, the Olympic medals.
02:27On Ecosia, we don't have any of that.
02:29We have the websites directly.
02:31We need to dig deeper into the results to find what interests us.
02:37At the same time, we are comparing a company with several billion users and another with only 20 million.
02:43But overall, Ecosia's results are more than adequate for everyday searches.
02:49I have been using it for several weeks and the results are more than sufficient.
02:54But from time to time, I need to go on Google because I can't find what
02:58I'm looking.
02:58So, what I advise you to do is to use Ecosia as your default search engine.
03:03And you can still use Google from time to time when you need more precise searches with
03:08more complete results.
03:10That's what I've been doing for several months.
03:12When I can't find something on Ecosia, I look on Google.
03:16On iOS and iPadOS, to change your default search engine, you go to the settings.
03:21Then, you go down to Safari and then you click on search engine and you change it to Ecosia.
03:26On Android and Windows, you go to the Google Chrome settings.
03:30Then, you click on search engine and select Ecosia.
03:35Thanks to this, you will be contributing to planting trees around the world.
03:38According to Ecosia, for every 40 searches, a tree is planted.
03:42Today, I have 3750 subscribers on my channel.
03:45If each of them used Ecosia, we could plant 40,000 trees, or almost 25% of the number of
03:52'total trees present in all the streets of Paris.
03:55So, changing your search engine takes two minutes and can have more impact than you think.
03:59Think about the environment.
04:01Of course, that won't be enough if, on the side, you're busy polluting and burning oil.
04:05But still, Ecosia will have a positive impact on the climate to some extent.
04:11So, don't hesitate to make this small gesture for the environment.
