00:02An American doctor working in Congo has tested positive for Ebola as health officials race to
00:08get ahead of an outbreak that has already crossed borders in Central Africa. The doctor is Peter
00:14Stafford, a medical missionary who has been working in eastern Congo since 2023. Stafford
00:20was treating patients at a hospital near Bunia when he was exposed to the rare Bundibujo strain
00:27of Ebola. Stafford is now being transported to Germany for treatment. His wife, who is also a
00:33physician, and another doctor who were exposed remain symptom-free and in quarantine. The World
00:39Health Organization declared the outbreak a global health emergency over the weekend. Health officials
00:44say suspected cases have climbed past 500 now, with more than 100 suspected deaths reported in the
00:51Congo alone. Doctors are also trying to make up lost ground after early testing looked for a
00:57different Ebola strain and missed the current one. Officials now say the virus may have circulated for
01:03weeks before they confirmed what they were dealing with. President Trump was asked Monday whether he's
01:09concerned about Ebola coming into the United States. I'm concerned about everything, but certainly am.
01:15I think that, you know, it's been confined right now to Africa, but it's something that has had a
01:22breakout. The CDC says the immediate risk to the American public remains low, but seven Americans
01:28connected to the outbreak are expected to be moved out of the region for monitoring and care.
