Cool fact: In Tangled, animating Rapunzel’s 70-foot braid required Disney to build an entirely new hair simulation system, with software engineer Kelly Ward spending six years writing the code to make it work.
The team animated 147 individual “tubes” that acted as guides, which were then rendered into up to 140,000 individual strands of hair per shot—making Rapunzel’s braid one of the most technically complex achievements in Disney Animation at the time.
‘Tangled’ (2010) is available to stream on Disney+.
6 years of coding just for Rapunzel’s hair 😭💻 Disney really didn’t play around with this one 💇‍♀️✨
