Here’s a clip from The Mind of Sai Marie podcast today featuring Canadian fantasy author J.W. Shaw, in conversation about her brilliant, deeply resonant books. This work confronts the chaos of a fracturing realm, the resilience of finding your footing when you feel "too different," and the raw courage it takes to share your hidden worlds with the public.

In this episode, we explored the fierce realities of reluctant heroes, how a neurodivergent mind can turn intense emotional depth into a worldbuilding superpower, and the role of unfiltered storytelling in reclaiming identity, navigating dangerous alliances, and facing the unknown when steel alone cannot win.

00:00Tell us about the importance of merging that real world neurodivergent perspective with your fictional epic fantasy world building.
00:06So I had been I've been writing for over 30 years and I had never shared anything.
00:11It was more of my introspections, my understanding of the world through these fantasy and fictions that I was creating.
00:17But when I was diagnosed in 2019, it was a very big aha moment.
00:22And I was looking back and trying to decide, OK, well, what does that mean for me?
00:27Writing has been something that I've done for so long.
00:29And when I'm not writing, I'm thinking about writing.
00:31So I thought maybe that's my special interest.
00:34And it gave me the courage to take my my manuscript for my first book and send it to an
00:39editor.
00:39I'm keeping in mind the worst they can say is it's it sucks.
00:42And they came back and they said, this doesn't suck.
00:44You should publish. But also, too, with the hyper focuses and stuff, I am able to look at the world
00:49from a creative outlet,
00:50from angles where people don't necessarily look at things because I'm not restricted by what society has said.
00:57Oh, you can't do that or that's taboo.
00:59My brain doesn't understand that. And I will look at things from different angles.
