In Adelaide the Prime Minister has moved to reassure two major South Australian regional communities the federal government will support them as their manufacturing hubs continue to face uncertain futures. Mr Albanese says he remains committed to steel-making in Whyalla while negotiations are continuing to keep smelting operations going in Port Pirie.

00:02With Wyala's blast furnace still offline following unscheduled maintenance in early April, the
00:07Prime Minister moved to allay community fears.
00:10We recognise the importance which is there of having a steel making industry in Australia.

00:21The Premier upfront about the difficulties workers are having in getting the steelworks
00:25back producing vital molten iron.
00:28The blast furnace continues to be in a very vulnerable situation but staff on the ground
00:34are seeking to bring it back to life.
00:39$2.6 billion has so far been committed to finance the administration and support a new buyer
00:46to build a new modern steel making plant.
00:48The opposition says while it's supportive of extra money for Wyala, it's concerned about
00:53how long the sale process is taking.
00:56This has gone on a lot longer than what the government had first projected so we'll have
01:00to wait until the state budget comes out to see how much additional taxpayer funds are
01:05being poured into this program.
01:06The state government says with five potential buyers in the mix, the sale is tracking well
01:11and it always expected the process to take at least 18 months.
01:16The Prime Minister also looked to assure workers and contractors about their future at Nearstar's
01:22smelting operations as negotiations continue on another bailout.
01:26We're continuing to work with Nearstar both in Port Pirie and in Tasmania, we're working
01:32through those commercial arrangements.
01:34At the start of May, the previous nine month $135 million bailout ended, it's unclear how
01:42much money has been offered this time to Nearstar's multinational owner Trafagira.
