00:00Hello, Darryl. Hello, boys. Darryl, how far are the Cavs going?
00:05We going to the finals? I think there's a good shot that we're going to be
00:10working in June there, Ken. Wow! Whoa!
00:14Darryl! Did you also know, I want to know who you're MVP of the series, because
00:18Lima brought up Evan Mobley. He is on the vaunted 2010-522
00:22club, which is him, Akeem Olajuwon,
00:26Larry Bird. Who else? Do you know? The 2010-522
00:30club? Tone? It is the vaunted club that
00:34only Steph Curry, LeBron James, Akeem Olajuwon, and Larry
00:38Bird. Yeah, there you go. Vaunted. Who's the MVP
00:42of the series? I
00:45think the MVP of the series
00:48could very well be Evan Mobley, but I am going
00:52to give Donovan Mitchell his flowers.
00:56I'm going to give Donovan his flowers. For all the talk about not having the killer
01:02instinct, not being able to win when it matters most,
01:07that was as complete of a basketball game as you'll ever see, what you watched last
01:15night. I know he finished with 26 points, but man, he opened up so much on the floor. He had
01:24eight
01:25assists, rebounded the basketball, blocked the shot. He was everywhere, and it just felt like
01:33everything flowed through him last night. Congratulations to him. Congratulations to the
01:39Cavaliers, especially coming off what we all watched Friday night and how disappointing and ugly
01:44that was to watch. I don't think anybody thought that they were going to go to Detroit and just
01:50absolutely dismantle the Pistons in the fashion in which they did. So congratulations, Kenny Atkinson,
01:56Donovan, and the Cavaliers for just an absolute whooping of the Pistons in game seven.
02:03There was a little bit of a back and forth online I'd like to know from you. Do you consider
02:06the
02:07season a success now? Yeah, you got over the hump. I think that's what it's about. Now, you still
02:15didn't make the James Harden trade just to get the conference finals. Let's be honest about that.
02:19You made that trade with the intention of bringing him back for multiple years and also to get you to
02:26the NBA finals and help you compete for an NBA championship. But you got over the hump. You got
02:32the monkey off your back, and now you're full circle, right? This whole narrative about the
02:36Cavaliers being soft in the playoffs, and we remember the Jared Allen comment about the lights
02:42being bright and all that after that Knicks series four years ago. Now we're full circle here,
02:47and it's the New York Knicks who stand in the way of the Cavaliers to getting back to the NBA
02:53finals.
02:53So some fun storylines going into this Eastern Conference final as well.
02:58Have you changed your mind or your thought on who this team is when they struggle the way they do?
03:06Their lows are so low, but their highs are high, and now they've won two game sevens, one of which
03:11domination on the road. Well, they've won six straight game sevens, and I do believe that might
03:17be the second longest game seven win streak in NBA history behind the Boston Celtics,
03:22who I think had a 10-game game seven win streak. I have to double-check that, but
03:29the fact that this franchise is going back to 2016 and winning an NBA title there in game seven,
03:36they're now, I think, eight and two overall in game sevens, riding a six-game win streak.
03:42This team is really hard to pin down, Anthony, because you're right.
03:47The highs are the ultimate highs, but it just feels like the lows are like the depths of hell
03:53at times.
03:53Oh, my God. Well, especially because like Wednesday, they played so hard, and they were so physical,
03:59and they ended up winning that game, and it's like, man, we broke through. Now we're going to go back
04:03home game six, and it's like every goodwill that they had had, it completely, like, because I got to
04:09tell you, it wasn't like the haters came out of the woodwork. There were plenty of people who were
04:13calling and tweeting on Wednesday and Thursday, or I should say Thursday and Friday morning, and
04:19immediately I'm getting some of the messages on social media just about, oh, I was fooled, you were fooled,
04:24we were all fooled, and it didn't lead, it didn't make me too optimistic going into last night to the
04:30point where I couldn't believe it. Jason Lloyd was more optimistic than me. I was on the phone with him
04:34as he was driving on his way up there, and a lot of us were all nervous, and man, they
04:39just, I cannot,
04:40I still can't believe Detroit didn't make, and it sounded like Stan Van Gundy was trying to like
04:45will him into it a little bit, to try to make it a game, but it was like, man, I
04:48can't believe they
04:49didn't, they didn't even make a run. They didn't even make a run. Yeah, I mean, even doing the show
04:53yesterday, Ken, I was saying, hey, I'd love this to be a four-hour pep rally. Go Cavs, they're gonna,
04:59you know, move on to the conference finals and that, but I just didn't have any evidence to support it.
05:05Like, that's what I was struggling with, right? I mean, we know what we've been watching this,
05:09this postseason, but you know what? It is a roller coaster. That is the joy as well as the pain
05:15of the playoffs, as we know here in Cleveland, is, you know, there are great moments that you
05:20never forget. Certainly last night's game's gonna be one people aren't gonna forget for a long time,
05:25but then there's obviously, you know, those painful losses as well. So the formula now,
05:32go out to Madison Square Garden, see if you can get one of the two. You take care of your
05:37home floor,
05:38and you're back in the NBA finals playing for an NBA championship again. So that was the formula
05:45this past series. They didn't exactly follow that. They did it the hard way, having to win two road
05:49games. But this, and I think maybe this is why I have been so tough on them this year, Ken,
05:55is because their ceiling is so high, right? They are an extremely talented team. This is a very good
06:02roster. Is it a perfect roster? No. I don't think that there's such a thing as a perfect roster in
06:07sports. You're always going to have warts and deficiencies, but it's whether or not you're built
06:11well enough to where you can fill in those holes, right? And so, you know, when I look at this
06:18Cavalier team, like, they are, in my view, I think they have the best roster in the Eastern Conference,
06:24but that doesn't mean that you're automatically going to get, you know, the pass to a conference
06:29championship there. So that's why I'm so tough on them because I get aggravated by not realizing
06:35potential. And this Cavalier team has so much potential. And again, Kobe Altman does not make
06:41those moves at the trade deadline just to be happy with maybe getting through the first
06:46or the second round. But again, to the question you asked earlier, I still feel like it's been
06:51successful because they took that next step. They got back to the conference final. It's the only third
06:57conference final series. They will play without LeBron James on their roster. Of course, the
07:01first since the 92 campaign. The James Harden trade, how do you grade it so far? What do you
07:08think of him and the rollercoaster ride he's been on with the Cavs? Right. Well, I mean, listen,
07:13had they lost last night, I, you know, the report had come out, I think earlier in the day,
07:18and it was consistent with what's been put out there previous about the Cavaliers intent.
07:22Once Harden opts out of that player option he has this summer, the intent is to sign him to a
07:29two-year
07:30contract extension so that he's here with Donovan Mitchell for the next couple of years. The intent
07:35also, too, to try and extend Donovan. There's some talk about, okay, maybe Donovan should wait a year
07:41because he can get a fifth year and even more money by doing so. But that doesn't necessarily mean
07:47that Donovan isn't committed here. It's kind of like the LeBron conversation that we used to always
07:53have, right? What's best for LeBron financially as far as, remember that second time around, it seemed
07:59like every summer they were re-signing him because he kept opting out to increase, you know, his annual
08:06salary. But had they lost last night, I would have been vehemently against bringing James Harden back
08:13because the mission was not accomplished. But, you know, he didn't light up the box score last
08:21night, but I felt like he filled the role last night that he needed to fill. And, you know, so
08:30I do think
08:31that if he can just take care of the basketball, we're good. But the frustrating thing for me and James
08:39Harden in this particular series that they just won were just the volume of turnovers and the sloppy
08:46ball handling from him, it just, it was driving me nuts. So I don't know if I have a grade
08:53for you,
08:53Anthony. I need to see how this whole thing plays out. But he played his role. He played a really
08:59good
08:59role last night, even though he didn't end up being one of the big scorers.
09:03Daryl Ryder with us. Kenny Atkinson, is he now certified as a wartime consigliere?
09:10Can you, can you say safe, he's safe, he's safe, he's safe. They stay, you know what? Here's the
09:16best part of last night. They staved off Armageddon, right? I mean, imagine all the things that we would
09:22have to be talking about this morning had that not gone that way. So I think, I think we're safe.
09:27I think
09:28that, and even from Kobe Altman's standpoint here, you can justify running this thing back now. Had
09:34you lost last night, there's, there's no justification for anything because you've gone
09:39through, you would have gone through four years of this and not accomplish what you set out to
09:44accomplish. So, and that was kind of the argument that I had had after last year's playoffs is like,
09:49you keep running this thing back and you're just slamming your head against the brick wall and not
09:53making any progress. So they made progress. I think that you can justify running it back.
10:00But, you know, there, there's also the LeBron thing that's going to be hanging out there this
10:05summer as well. Could he be the missing piece for the Cavaliers assuming they don't win the NBA
10:10championship this year? Oh, you're so dangerous. All right. And I know you cover the Browns. We,
10:16we got OTAs coming up on Monday. Next time we're going to get a chance. Oh joy. My favorite time
10:20of
10:21year. They matter this time. I meant they start on Wednesday, but the next time we get a chance
10:26to talk to you is on Friday. Yeah. So could we find out who the starting quarter, not us,
10:32but do you think that they could figure out who their starting quarterback is going to be by the
10:35end of the week? Cause it was Todd Monken who said it. I didn't put them words in his mouth
10:38that by the time training camp starts, they want to know who their starting quarterback is.
10:42I, I I'll be honest with you. I think they got to get through mini camp,
10:45the, the mandatory mini camp there in June. Then, and you go into the off season with,
10:52with that idea so that to your point and, and based on what Todd Monken has been saying,
10:58you do come back to training camp with, with your starting quarterback, but I think you got to give
11:04it through the, the OTAs. You got three weeks of those. You got a mandatory mini camp that follows
11:09that will be out there. I believe every Wednesday for the, the OTAs. That's our one day that we are
11:17out there for availability. And obviously a lot is going to be read into the reps. Who's getting
11:24the reps, where they're getting the reps, who's getting the first reps up, who's getting the
11:27first team reps, who's getting the 11 on 11 reps, right? All that's going to get hyperanalyzed
11:33as it always does. But yeah, I think you got to go through the mandatory mini camp and then you
11:40can honestly say, Hey, you know what? We've settled on whether it's your door to Sean,
11:45that's going to be the starting quarterback going into training camp, barring any, you know,
11:51unforeseen circumstances. I think that's the right approach in my view.
11:55Darryl Ryder. Okay. Yeah. The QB search in there. Oh, by the way, is miles going to be there?
12:01I think he'll be there for mandatory mini camp. I, maybe he pops in for an OTA. He's done that
12:06in years past where he'll pop in for an OTA here and there. So I don't know if he'll be
12:11there,
12:11but he'll definitely be there. I believe for mandatory mini camp. If not, it's going to cost
12:15him some money. Well, he ain't going to cost himself no money. So I don't, okay, that's fine.
12:20Well, you get fined. I mean, that's why it's mandatory. Yeah. You do have to show up for the,
12:24for the, uh, the, the mini camp, but the OTAs are still voluntary. He's not required to be there for
12:29those. Okay. I just want to make sure. Cause I know that that's going to be one of the things
12:32that get brought up maybe on, well, they got the cast. Oh, he's not a leader. He's not this. He's
12:37not that. How could you be? Yeah. Yeah. I know. I, we all know how that. Well, he's not necessarily
12:42charging the light brigade over there. So let's, I mean, let's be a little on you're honest, but I'll
12:48be a little honest about it. Yeah. Go ahead. Darryl. I wanted to ask, uh, is Kevin Stefanski still the
12:53head coach of the Browns if he would have consulted with Deion Sanders last year? Oh, good Lord. Um,
13:02I know, because I don't think that consulting with Deion Sanders would have won them more games.
13:08What are you trying to say, Darryl? No, I just, I just, I mean, yeah, I, I don't, yeah, no,
13:16I don't,
13:16he was fired because they didn't win enough games. They, the ownership and, and, and leadership felt they
13:22should have won seven, eight games. They only won five. So, um, I mean, and you lost the two at
13:27the time, I believe, winless teams in the Jets and the Titans. And you allow Carson Wentz to walk
13:32right down the field on your, uh, top defense there, 80 yards to beat you in London. So no,
13:37they left game. They, they left games out there that they should have won. That's why Kevin got
13:40fired. He didn't get fired because he didn't consult Deion Sanders. Now he did get fired in part.
13:45And Andrew Barry's on the record of saying this, uh, because of player development. Um, Andrew did not feel
13:51that the coaching staff did a sufficient enough job developing the younger, uh, draft picks, starting
13:56with the wide receiver room, starting with the offensive line room. Uh, maybe Andrew has a little
14:01higher opinion of some of those players that he had brought in than maybe Kevin Stefanski and the
14:06coaching staff had, but, um, player development, not winning enough games. Uh, I, those were the two
14:11reasons Kevin Stefanski is now the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. All right, Darryl. I'll talk to you.
14:16Well, we will talk to you on Friday. Blessings to you. All the best. Uh, look forward to it guys.
14:20Hopefully the Cavaliers are, uh, coming home with a couple of wins in their pocket. Very
14:25nice. At least a split. That'd be very good. Yes. Get it. Just go get a split. That's all
14:29they got to do. Just go win one. Thank you very much, Darryl. The ever so dangerous one,
14:32Darryl Ryder brought to you by driving jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store. What he just
14:37said is exactly why it's a success. What he, what just came out of his mouth because you got
14:45to realize how insane it would be. We'd be angry and it's true, but just listen to what
14:50he said, because if you were to say it, I were to say it, any of us were to say
14:54it,
14:54it would make total sense this morning. It would sound insane in 36 hours.
