00:05Over the past few weeks we have journeyed across the UK. We've been to London, Edinburgh,
00:11Liverpool, Birmingham, meeting extraordinary singers with one powerful thing in common.
00:17Each of them carries a song that tells their incredible story.
00:21This song saved my life. They've stepped onto our travelling stage not just to perform,
00:28see my mother's life. But to share something deeply personal.
00:33All of your feelings come right out of your voice. Sorry, it's so amazing.
00:39Tonight, five singers remain. Chosen by Sam and Paloma, they return for one final performance,
00:47right here at the Hackney Empire. It's going to be moving, it's going to be memorable.
00:53Welcome to your song, The Grand Final.
01:02We are moments away. How are they doing up there?
01:05In just under two hours time, the concert will be underway.
01:09Last one, Hackney, it's only good.
01:10And our final five must be ready for the biggest performance of their lives.
01:15Oh, my God. I've been practising a lot, but home, Hackney Empire.
01:20It's a pretty big difference.
01:22After all of you. Thank you.
01:24No worries.
01:25When I was little, I would have never imagined that one day I go on the stage in this majestic
01:33venue
01:34and sing my song, tell my story.
01:38Come on, guys, this way.
01:40Now, are you ready for this?
01:41Take a look at this.
01:42Look at it.
01:44Let's take it in.
01:47Oh, wow.
01:49Is it grand enough?
01:51I think it'll do, yeah.
01:53I'm so looking forward to tonight.
01:55I'm really excited for them.
01:57I'm from Hackney and it feels really apt that the final is here in the heart of my heart.
02:04What a venue.
02:05I could see them when they walked out on stage just, like, looking up.
02:08And I remember that feeling, man.
02:10All those years thinking, what's it going to be like?
02:13This is what it's like.
02:15And soon 2,000 people will walk through the doors that have all chosen on their own time
02:19and their own dime to be here.
02:22And you have a responsibility to give them a show.
02:24They're going to need their money's worth straight away.
02:26So the first person that's going to be taken to this stage, it's going to be you, Milo.
02:31Yes, Milo!
02:35You're going to smash it.
02:37Oh, gosh.
02:38Milo going first is putting big respect on his name.
02:42Just imagine walking out there and it's just full.
02:44You're going to be like, oh, my God.
02:46Because as soon as they hear his voice,
02:47I guarantee everyone in the audience is going to be like, hang on.
02:50I didn't realise the level here.
02:53How are you feeling, seriously?
02:54I'm feeling, yeah, definitely the nerves are there.
02:56Do you know what? It's such an honour to open the show.
02:59Yeah, exactly.
02:59I mean, there is pressure.
03:01I feel like they say, don't be nervous.
03:03I feel like nerves are good.
03:04Maybe not to the extent that I'm having them.
03:07Oh, my God, I've actually never been so nervous in my life.
03:09He'll have less time to be nervous.
03:11And then he'll be able to enjoy the rest of the show and watch everybody else.
03:13Do you feel ready?
03:14Nope.
03:16I'm excited, but, yeah, obviously, as a parent,
03:18I'm nervous for him, but I know he'll be brilliant.
03:20I know he will.
03:22But before Milo opens the show,
03:26there's one last chance to fine-tune their performance.
03:34With vocal coach Annabel.
03:36Just try and stay in control of those little bits I've given you.
03:39The very, very last note just goes straight up to head voice.
03:42I can't get it.
03:43Will it not come out?
03:44It's fine.
03:45OK, stick to what you're doing, then.
03:46I can sense that Chantel's getting in her head.
03:53She's sung that note before in the song and she hits it flawlessly,
03:57but this last note, you kind of big it up too much that you trip over it.
04:00You're on thin ice if you sing like that.
04:05But while the others practice...
04:08Mina hasn't sung a note since walking out of yesterday's rehearsal.
04:12She absolutely needs to be quiet or she's not going to have any voice tomorrow.
04:16What are you doing?
04:17Yesterday, I lost my voice.
04:19Did you?
04:20Yeah.
04:20What did you think it was?
04:22I had some cough medicines and I was nervous as well and it was like a vicious cycle.
04:27I'm so worried that I can't turn up and sing today at all.
04:31I'm going to rest my voice, have plenty of water and herbal teas.
04:36Obviously, I'm not here today just to sing for myself.
04:40Mina earned her place in the final singing in Birmingham,
04:43telling her story about fleeing oppression in Iran.
04:46So many women out there in Iran and outside Iran
04:51who could never share their stories, could never share their songs.
04:58So hopefully, I have the voice to literally be able to communicate that and also sing this song.
05:07I need you to start telling yourself, my voice is fine.
05:09Because the more you tell yourself that it isn't, you're going to worry your voice away.
05:14It's show day, you've got to stop focusing on what's wrong with your voice.
05:17You have to go, right, the show must go on.
05:21And with showtime only moments away, the sold-out audience is starting to take their seats,
05:26including some familiar faces.
05:29Are you excited?
05:29Yeah.
05:30Always excited, especially my friend here now.
05:35Probably support everyone, but Mina was at Birmingham as well, so probably a bit biased.
05:42Team Finland. Team Finland.
05:49Alison, about three minutes till we get you out there.
05:52All right, then.
05:54Okay, this is it. That's where we're doing this.
05:56How are you feeling?
05:57Nervous.
05:57You're nervous more than her?
05:59Yeah, absolutely.
06:00I think before you go on stage, you feel so nervous.
06:03Starting to show off.
06:05The thing that I've learned to do is manage the adrenaline, because you can peak too soon.
06:10If they can just not think that this is a defining moment of the rest of their lives.
06:15We're all here, we're all rooting for you.
06:17Like, just enjoy it tonight.
06:19Such a big moment.
06:20Well, there she goes.
06:21It's about being an amazing moment.
06:24I really hope that it is the amazing experience that it should be, because it's not every day
06:30you get to sing in a venue like this, man.
06:32Guys, I'm going to start the show off.
06:34No one bothered.
06:35Okay.
06:37Let's go, team.
06:38Let's go.
06:38Yes.
06:39Let's go.
06:39Cheers, bro.
06:42Is everyone good to go?
06:44Everyone is good to go.
06:45Let's go.
06:45Let's go, guys.
06:47Right, that's it.
06:48I'm going to start the show off.
06:50Right now.
06:56Good evening, Hackney.
07:01You're looking good tonight.
07:03Are you ready for a fantastic show?
07:11Good evening and thank you so much for coming.
07:16Now tonight, we are celebrating the power of songs.
07:21You guys are about to see five extraordinary amateur singers who will be singing the song that means
07:29the world to them.
07:30But before we actually meet our incredible amateur singers, please give a huge Hackney welcome to Paloma
07:37and we're going to be singing the show.
07:43We've been traveling up and down the country.
07:45How did you find the experience?
07:47Being able to meet so many inspiring people has absolutely been a career highlight for me.
07:55I cried pretty much the whole series.
07:57Across the four cities, you saw over 50 singers and some of them are here tonight.
08:04Stand up, guys.
08:05Take your applause.
08:07Take your applause because you are very special.
08:13Sam Paloma, it's not about winning tonight.
08:15You've decided to award a special performance of the evening.
08:20How are you going to choose that?
08:22Great difficulty.
08:24You can tell when someone is singing the truth.
08:27Every single singer you're about to see has that.
08:30So whoever gets to perform at the end of the night, for me, who knows?
08:34But it's going to be magic and it should be a celebration of every single person that's coming up here
08:38tonight.
08:42It's all right. You're going to smash it.
08:45The nerves are...
08:47Okay, ladies and gentlemen, are you ready for your first singer?
08:52Yes!
08:54Milo!
08:56Milo!
08:57Go on, mate.
08:58Paloma and Sam found him just down the road when we put our stage at Tower Bridge.
09:04You're going to love him.
09:05His name is Milo.
09:11Hello, Milo. How are you doing?
09:13I'm doing good. How are you?
09:13Good to meet you.
09:15So what does singing mean to you?
09:17I was always made to feel like singing was never cool.
09:20In primary school, it was hard.
09:22And then I stopped completely for about two years.
09:26Wow.
09:28It's really difficult when your child's confidence is knocked.
09:32There was a time where he would sing all the time.
09:34Then there was a time when he just stopped.
09:36So sweet.
09:37Yeah.
09:38I was ready to perform in an assembly and I could not do it at all.
09:44And I was shaking, freezing on stage.
09:47That was the moment where I was like, right, no singing.
09:51Nobody can hear me except for me.
09:54When you close your eyes, you listen to him and you hear a confidence.
09:57But then you open them and he stood there trying to have his centre mass as small as possible.
10:03So is this like your comfort zone?
10:05Either this or this.
10:06You deserve better than Mr. Burns, you know what I mean?
10:10I'll tell you when to go.
10:13The kind of pain he's still carrying from those years of people making fun of him because he wanted to
10:18sing.
10:18But that stayed with him.
10:19He has to rewrite that script.
10:25Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Milo.
10:46Oh no.
10:48Oh my goodness.
10:58Oh my goodness.
11:04Hi everyone.
11:06My name is Milo.
11:08The song I'm singing today is Rise Up by Andrea Day.
11:10The lines that I love, it says, rise up unafraid and rise up in spite of the ache, which both
11:17give that resilience that I really needed and got through this song.
11:21But this song goes out to everybody who's had to overcome something challenging or love something they can't love.
11:26Also to all the people who did say, you can't do this.
11:29You know, this is to prove that I can and I think that shows.
11:32So yeah.
11:34Thank you very much.
11:37Do you think he's nervous?
11:39Yeah.
11:39What's that?
11:40He's going to absolutely smash it.
11:47Broken down and tired
11:51Of living life on a merry-go-round
11:55And you can't find that fighter
11:58But I see it in you
12:00So we gon' walk it out
12:03And move mountains
12:09And I'll rise up
12:11I'll rise like the day
12:13I'll rise
12:14I get like he's just 15 years old
12:16I guess
12:16I'll rise unafraid
12:17I'll rise up
12:19And I'll do it a thousand times again
12:25And I'll rise up
12:27I'll lock the waves
12:30I'll rise up
12:31I'll rise up
12:32In spite of the ache
12:34I'll rise up
12:35I'll rise up
12:36And I'll do it a thousand times again
12:44I'll rise up
12:45I'll rise up
12:58You're absolutely smashing it.
13:00Go on, Bob.
13:02Oh, we will rise, we will rise, we will rise, oh, we will rise, oh, we will rise, yeah.
13:25We will rise, and I'll do it a thousand times again for you, for you, for you, for you.
13:56Yes, Milo, yes.
14:01Wow.
14:04Oh, my God, I'm shaking, you're shaking, you're shaking.
14:10Well done, Milo.
14:11You're so amazing, I know.
14:15Oh, Lord, God bless her.
14:24You actually broke me.
14:26You were so good.
14:27Yes.
14:28You were amazing.
14:30Yes.
14:31Were you proud of yourself?
14:33Yes.
14:34By the tears.
14:37Have you done it?
14:39Yes.
14:40Yes.
14:43You were a rock star out there.
14:46Well done.
14:47Well done.
14:47Well done.
14:49So then we went to Edinburgh.
14:52Should I get my guitar ready?
14:54Yeah.
14:54Yeah.
14:54I really can't wait for you all to hear and meet Finlay.
15:00Yeah, man, come on.
15:03I'm Alison.
15:03So lovely to meet you, Alison.
15:05My name's Finlay.
15:07I'll give it a good go.
15:09So when did you get into singing then, Finlay?
15:11My mum heard me practising my guitar and she'd said,
15:14come through and play me something.
15:15And I played the song that I'll be playing today.
15:17I turned around and she was in floods of tears.
15:20Aww.
15:21My parents loved music.
15:26Unfortunately, in 2018, we found out that my dad was diagnosed
15:29with stage four esophageal cancer.
15:34And we lost him in June of 2020.
15:38And the week before he died, that's when we found out
15:41the really shocking news that my mum's had come back.
15:49You've been through things that people couldn't fathom.
15:52It's like a big knot in your stomach.
15:57Just want to make sure the guitar isn't a comfort blanket.
16:00Life has left a void.
16:02It's also provided him with this wealth and well of emotion
16:08I want to hear that in his voice.
16:10And the only way to do it is to let yourself blow out
16:13and crack your voice.
16:16Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Finlay.
16:28Good evening, everyone.
16:30The song I'm going to be singing to you tonight is Candy by Paolo Natini.
16:34Very special one to me, but also to my mother, who in the last year
16:37sadly passed away.
16:39And a month before she died, she asked me if I would play this song for her
16:43at her funeral.
16:46There was no better way I could, you know, commemorate her
16:50and just give her one last thing back.
16:53APPLAUSE
16:54Go Finlay!
16:56Go Finlay!
16:58Go Finlay!
17:22Evening on my tail
17:25At the most honest means of travel
17:29It gets me there nonetheless
17:32I'm a heartless man
17:35I've watched, baby
17:37Been a helpless one at best
17:40Darling, I'll wave your skin
17:44I'll even wash your clothes
17:47Is he moving? Move around that stage.
18:02Smash in there.
18:06Ah, the guitar is coming.
18:10Go on, Bob, go on.
18:16Yeah, man, play with a band.
18:17And I know that the lights is on.
18:27Oh, I'll be there waiting for you.
18:34Oh, I'll be there waiting for you.
18:40You can see he's singing that to his mum, isn't it?
18:43Oh, I'll be there waiting for you.
18:49Come on!
18:50Oh, I'll be there waiting for you.
18:55Hear the woo sound, can we?
18:57Oh, I'll be there waiting for you.
19:03Yes, sir!
19:05Oh, I'll be there waiting for you.
19:07Oh, the angel is waiting for you.
19:09All you do is keep you in this place.
19:13Oh, the control has been jacketed.
19:17All you do is keep me waiting, waiting.
19:21Oh, the chief and the shooting plows to me.
19:25All you do is keep me waiting, waiting.
19:28All they do, all they do is keep me waiting, little waiting
19:43Great, that's what I'm talking about
19:46It's great
19:46You left nothing on your table
19:51The wonderful Finlay, incredible
19:55Well done
19:56Oh, man, I'm so proud of you, man
20:02So, so cool
20:12It's incredible
20:14I really felt my parents on the stage with me
20:16That was just, yeah, surreal
20:19I could, I just felt the warmth and the presence of both my mum and my dad
20:22So, yeah, I couldn't be happier
20:26Our next singer, we met on a very, very stormy day
20:31In Liverpool
20:33This is the amazing Chantel
20:37Yeah!
20:41Hi, Chantel
20:42Hi, how are you doing?
20:43I don't know
20:43So, today, how are you feeling about going out there, seeing all these strangers
20:47The rain
20:48Oh, mate, my legs are like jelly
20:52Great, you need two of those
20:55Oh, you're shaking
20:56Yeah
20:57Growing up my whole life, singing was important to me
21:00Growing up my whole life, singing was important to me
21:01I wanted to start to perform
21:02I just didn't have much opportunity to do it
21:07I was on dialysis for 11 years
21:10And then I was told
21:11If you don't get a transplant soon, you're not going to make it
21:16The week later, the nurse got a call
21:19And it's like, Chantel, you wouldn't believe this
21:20They've got your kidney
21:23I'm doing this with Madonna in mind
21:26How young he was, and how he passed
21:29It's the best thing that's ever happened to me
21:31You are going to do the performance of your life
21:35Yes
21:36Yeah
21:36Me
21:40I know it's shit, but I told you
21:42No, it wasn't, I loved it
21:44She's got very loud voices in her mind
21:48And they're filling her with negativity
21:51It's just about whether she chooses to tune in or out of those voices
21:56I'm going to tell, I'll play in the action
21:58Come out of corner, here we go
22:01Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome
22:03The one, the only, Chantel
22:07Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
22:11She looks unreal
22:14Right, set three, man
22:16Good evening, everyone
22:17I had a speech
22:18I forgot it already
22:20As we do
22:21So, I'll just speak from the heart
22:23When I received my kidney transplant
22:25I was given the gift of not only just life, but time
22:30That was one miracle
22:31That was one miracle
22:32Then I had another miracle
22:33In the shape of my gorgeous daughter
22:36Thank you
22:39I'm blessed to just stand here and sing tonight with these wonderful people
22:44Thank you
22:45Thank you
22:46Thank you very much
22:49Come on
22:50You got this, Chantel
22:57I have had my shape
23:00Woo!
23:03Of life's ups and downs
23:08But fate's been kind
23:13The downs have been few
23:18I guess you could say
23:21She's on it, she's on it
23:38She's on it
23:40Oh, that had been time
23:45Like right now
23:46She's got this, look at the swag
23:48Like right now
23:50But I always, somehow, I made thee
23:56I made you
24:01Cause, oh, every, every moment
24:06She's got them in the palm of her hand
24:08I've been hurting
24:08Oh, oh
24:11There was a moment
24:13Moment
24:14That I spent
24:16Oh, just loving you away
24:20Yeah, yeah, yeah
24:22If any form
24:23Oh, every moment
24:24Should ever ride
24:26Should ever ride
24:27My life's so vain
24:29Woo!
24:32She's so incredible
24:33Whatever
24:34Whatever
24:35Whatever reason
24:37There might be
24:42Cause you'll be there
24:45Between each line
24:48The pain
24:49And all of you
24:53Cause you're the best thing
24:55Has ever happened
24:59To me
25:01Last note
25:02She's gotta get it
25:02Yes
25:03I know
25:05You're the best thing
25:12Oh my god, incredible
25:14Woo!
25:16There's nothing out there
25:17Let's go
25:17Whatever
25:19Happened
25:21To
25:21Come on, come on, come on
25:23Me
25:24To
25:24You
25:24You
25:34You
25:35You
25:37You
25:40You
25:41You
25:41Thank you so much
25:44Thank you
25:46Well done
25:47That was brilliant
25:48Smash the
25:50Smash the
25:52Oh my goodness, I have got goosebumps!
25:56The incredible Chantel. Wonderful.
26:00It's amazing. It was incredible.
26:03It was amazing. It was amazing.
26:06Try my best to just keep tears back.
26:09It was a lot.
26:14Oh my God.
26:17I've never seen anyone laugh.
26:18Yeah, I promise you.
26:19Yeah.
26:21What a story, man.
26:24That was amazing. Best show in the world.
26:28Yeah, this is good.
26:34Next, we went to my hometown of Birmingham.
26:39Yes, Birmingham!
26:42And here, we found beautiful Mina.
26:51My name is Mina.
26:54Singing was always, throughout my life, an act of rebellion.
27:00Wow.
27:01Wow.
27:02In Iran, women marched in support of a modern identity.
27:06The right to do any job.
27:08Oh my God.
27:10I was born after the Islamic revolution.
27:12In Iran, there was a lot of oppression.
27:15And I had to become refugee in the UK because my voice was taken away from me.
27:27How's your brain?
27:28How's your brain?
27:28It's better off.
27:29You're going to have some good breath.
27:31Got your water.
27:32Oh my word.
27:33This is insanely good.
27:35It's so beautiful, isn't it?
27:38The final.
27:39I want to up it again in terms of passion and delivery.
27:43We just need a little bit of...
27:45All these decades of inhibition.
27:48I'm like battling all these voices in my head.
27:51I want to see Mina surprise herself about her capacity to be powerful.
27:56And be as free as I can.
28:01Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mina.
28:05Good evening.
28:14I'm going to sing the first song that I learned to sing when I was 12.
28:19And I had to do it this greatly because the place that I come from,
28:24A woman's voice is a crime.
28:29This song has travelled with me across years and borders to reach this stage.
28:37Women are not supposed to sing in public.
28:41And yet, here I am.
28:44Cheerio!
28:49What a freak of this one.
28:51What a freak of this one.
28:51She's the most punk person I know.
28:53She's the most punk person I know.
28:54She is.
28:54Go on Mina.
28:55This is your moment, babe.
