06:43I never told anybody I was a Vietnam veteran until 1977.
06:49Each vet has their own story.
06:52They came back so hurting, so confused, so in need of so much.
06:59One guy told me that the one words,
07:01the words that we always are looking for and we never hear,
07:04is welcome home.
07:06On July 4th, a major concert event took place.
07:10A welcome home tribute to our nation's Vietnam veterans.
07:17Actors John Boyk, John Ritter, and Peter Fonda hosted the HBO event
07:22with the stage to raise funds for Vietnam veteran organizations across the country.
07:26Our organizations are vet centers that are closing like mad,
07:29and we're in desperate need of just the real nuts and bolts stuff.
07:32Wheelchairs, new wheelchairs, braille printers, computer terminals, things like that.
07:39Performers rehearsed for two days as veterans traveled to Landover, Maryland
07:43for this reunion of words and music,
07:45a recognition many felt was long overdue.
07:48I don't think it's ever been too late.
07:50It's nice.
07:51It could have been nicer a few years back,
07:52but it's nice coming now.
08:07As the concert got underway,
08:09it was readily apparent that it was not too late to say,
08:12welcome home.
08:13To all the Vietnam veterans,
08:16I've come with the same to you.
08:20Everybody,
08:21We are here
08:23To say
08:26I love you
08:28Performers took the stage,
08:30many of whose works spanned the Vietnam era,
08:32each with their own special message for the Vietnam vets.

08:47Vietnam veterans themselves were included in this outstanding group of performances.
08:52But in Vietnam, in combat,
08:53printed on the hand grenades,

09:05One of the most moving moments of the concert
09:08was when one veteran,
09:09a victim of Agent Orange Poison,
09:11performed his song,

09:20my boy baby
09:23With twisted legs
09:25and broken sight
09:27His struggle goes on
09:30this very night
09:33I don't get any testing
09:34or treatment
09:35or compensation
09:36for my Agent Orange Poisoning.
09:38One thing I would like to see happen
09:39out of this event
09:40is to have people call that 1-800 number.
09:43HBO put out
09:44one and a quarter million dollars for this.
09:47I mean,
09:47they put their money
09:48where their mouth is.
09:49And it's a beautiful event.
09:52The 800 number
09:54shown throughout the concert
09:55will remain open
09:56as long as contributions
09:57continue to come in.

10:04who had sacrificed a great deal
