00:11Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel denounced on Saturday the renewed U.S. military threats
00:15against the Caribbean nation. Iran has delivered a 14-point proposal to U.S. authorities setting
00:25out storms for ending the war. U.S. President Trump said he will be reviewing the plan soon.
00:34Hundreds of demonstrators in Barcelona on Saturday demanded the release of the Gaza-bound
00:39flotilla activists detained by Israeli forces.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Sophie Fernandes from the Telesur Studios in Caracas,
00:55Venezuela. We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:09The Cuban government has strongly criticized the United States for its warnings of military
01:13action against the Cuban capital, Havana. In a post on the social media platform X, Cuba's
01:19President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated, the President of the United States is escalating his threats
01:24of military aggression against Cuba to a dangerous and unprecedented level. The international
01:29community must take note and, together with the people of the U.S., determines whether such
01:35a drastic criminal act will be permitted to satisfy the interests of a small but wealthy
01:39and influential group, eager for revenge and domination. No aggressor, no matter how powerful,
01:45will find surrender in Cuba. It will face a people determined to defend sovereignty and
01:50independence in every inch of the national territory.
02:02For his part, Colombian President Gustavo Pedro also rejected the recent threats of U.S. military
02:07intervention against Cuba, describing them as an aggression against all of Latin America.
02:12Via a social media account, the Colombian President wrote, I do not agree with military aggression
02:18against Cuba because that is military aggression against Latin America. We have said that the
02:22Caribbean is a son of peace and that must be respected. The people of Cuba are the sole
02:27owners of their country. The American continent will live in peace if no one attempts to impose
02:33their will on others. This continent is the continent of freedom, not of invasions. Honor to José Martí and to
02:39the
02:39free and sovereign republics of Latin America and the Caribbean.
02:48For his part, the former Minister of Peru, Héctor Béjar, also condemned the threats of attacks
02:54on Cuba made by U.S. President Trump. The Peruvian analyst and academic told Prensa Latina that
02:59Trump's remarks and disregard were new and criminal escalation of an empire led by a psychopath against Cuba.
03:07Rather than worrying about taking control of Cuba, Mr. Trump should take control of himself.
03:12He added, referring to the apparent instability of the White House occupant.
03:17The former foreign minister also condemned that the head of the Washington regime, following
03:23his ridiculous defeat in Iran should reflect on his precarious situation in his own country.
03:36And the Bolivarian alliance Alba TCP also condemned the escalation of threats from the U.S. against Cuba,
03:42denouncing it jeopardizes the stability of the entire Latin American region.
03:46An unofficial communique, the regional bloc expressed, is the concern and fear rejection
03:52of the escalating rhetoric from the U.S. government threatened to use force against the sister
03:57Republic of Cuba.
03:59Furthermore, the alliance emphasized, in light of the situation, Alba reaffirms his commitment
04:05to the principles of international law, the peaceful settlement of disputes, non-interference
04:09in the internal affairs of states, and unrestricted respect for the self-determination.
04:30On the other hand, the network of intellectuals, artists, and social movements in defense of
04:35humanity joined the condemnation of the military threats made by the Donald Trump administration
04:39against Cuba.
04:41In a statement, the organization said, while humanity calls for peace, cooperation, and
04:46respect for international law, the Trump administration responds with the logic of state terrorism,
04:51the reinforcement of the critical economic, commercial, and financial blockade, and the
04:56persecution of any financial transaction that dares to approach the island.
05:00This does not follow any political logic, but rather the coercive action of an imperial power,
05:05the resource to force to attempt to nullify the sovereignty and dignity of a people.
05:11The organization expresses its full support for the government and the people of Cuba,
05:16organizing their inalable right to self-determination and to shape their own destiny without external
05:22interference.
05:23Attempts to break the will of an entire country through starvation and economic strangulation
05:28are not only immoral, but are doomed to failure in the face of the dignity, resistance, and
05:35legacy of struggle of these heroes and martyrs.
05:38Finally, the organization declared, we demand the immediate and unconditional lifting of the
05:44criminal and genocidal economic, commercial, and financial blockade, and the removal of these
05:48new sanctions that violate the UN Charter.
05:51Solidarity among peoples will be stronger than the hatred and ambition of the empire.
05:57Cuba is not alone. Long live the dignity of the peoples.
06:09Another delegation from the Association of Pakistani Doctors graduating in Cuba reaffirms the
06:15solidarity with the Caribbean nation, which is currently facing a U.S. government siege
06:19and threats.
06:20During a Labor Day visit to the Cuban Embassy in Islamabad, the young Cuban doctors reaffirmed
06:26their support for Cuba and their opposition to the U.S. blockade.
06:29The head of the Cuban mission, Damián Cordero, states these professionals are grateful for
06:34their training in Cuba, which is telling them values of solidarity and commitment to saving
06:39lives.
06:40Likewise, Pakistani doctors took the opportunity to discuss the Association's agenda to strengthen
06:44solidarity and exchanges with Cuba's health sector.
06:47They also discussed activities planned for the centennial of Fidel Castro, the historic leader
06:52of the Cuban revolution, who is greatly admired in Pakistan.
07:12At least some people have died, including two children, and more than 2,000 have been left homeless
07:18due to heavy rains in the Brazilian states of Pernambuco and Paraíba.
07:22Rainfall reached 180 mm in 48 hours, causing landslides and flooding in vulnerable areas
07:28of Recife and Olinda.
07:30In response to the emergency, the federal government sent out civil defense teams.
07:35In addition, a state of public disaster was declared in the state of Paraíba, following
07:40the deaths of two men who were electrocuted in the city of Guaraibira.
07:44The priority is to assist isolated families and prevent further landslides amid warnings
07:49of more rain.
07:50That threatens the electricity supply and telecommunications.
07:59And now we have a short break coming up.
08:02Stay with us.
08:12Welcome back from the south.
08:14In the Dominican Republic, a total of 501 medical facilities were shut down between January
08:192024 and April 2026, following the identification of violations of current health regulations.
08:26The closures were triggered by mounting irregularities detected during inspection operations.
08:31Among the main findings were inadequate infrastructure conditions, the use of unauthorized equipment,
08:38and legal violations such as structural modifications without prior approval.
08:41In addition, breaches such as the hiring of foreign staff without the required permits were reported.
08:47The measure affected a wide range of facilities, including medical centers, laboratories, food banks,
08:53clinics, diagnostic centers, and cosmetic clinics, extending even to tattoo studios.
09:05Moving on to Bolivia, the Workers' Center challenged the government with an indefinite strike,
09:11accompanied by protests to demand wage increases.
09:14Executive Secretary Mario Argoyo announced the measure following a massive rally in El Alto,
09:19where the rejection of the economic policies of Feral Rigo Paz's Cabinet was ratified.
09:24The protests expressed solidarity with the indigenous communities of Pando and Beni,
09:28who marched to La Paz to Protest Law 1720, a regulation that, the alleged, facilitates the
09:34conversion of productive land into large states through mortgages, thus threatening food sovereignty
09:39and the right to territory.
09:41Furthermore, the Labour Union continues to demand the repeal of the law,
09:45and an end to measures that affect workers and indigenous peoples.
09:54Moving on to France, dozens of farmers, fishermen, taxi drivers, and other professionals
09:59gather in parties on Saturday to protest against surging fuel prices,
10:03and rising living costs across the nation.
10:06Producers assemble near the Place de Vauban, holding placards and denouncing the hiking costs
10:12of living.
10:13The protests seek to pressure the French government to respond to the crisis,
10:18with agriculture unions warning of food mobilization if demands are not met.
10:23Precisely, farmers denounce the shrinking margins in agriculture,
10:27warning that current policies risk undermining both production and food security.
10:31Demonstrators from various sectors cited global conflicts and political tensions for the hike,
10:36warning that France would become increasingly dependent on imports.
10:46We only have three sources of gas.
10:48We have the Middle East, with whom we are at war.
10:50We have Russia, with whom we are at war, and the United States.
10:53And we saw it with the tax that was put on cars, where things are still quite tense with the
10:56United States.
10:57We must have a solution with one of the three if we want to have enough fertilizer to supply and
11:01produce next year.
11:02And next year's production is built starting in June and July, so it is more than urgent.
11:05And obviously, our politicians might be less affected by what will happen next year, since they know they will no
11:10longer be there next year.
11:11But we still want to be here, and it is urgent to find solutions, and we want to be a
11:15source of proposals.
11:20The situation for small-scale fishermen is dramatic. You see, we are once again suffering a diesel crisis when we
11:25never learn from the mistakes of the past.
11:28Things should have been structured a few years ago during the last crisis, and nothing was done.
11:34And every time it's the same pattern, we are forced to go begging to the Brussels Commission.
11:39What we want is first to have aid that matches what we give to the French state economically,
11:43and to actually structure these solutions so that we have a slightly more sustainable future, quite simply.
11:58Russian authorities reported the interception of an Ukrainian offensive that targeted the capital Moscow and the Leningran province.
12:06The mayor of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, reported the Air Defense Forces of the Ministry of Defense destroyed two
12:14drones heading towards Moscow early on Sunday.
12:17Sobyanin also added that there were no casualties. Meanwhile, emergency services are still working at the scene.
12:23On the other hand, Alexander Dudenko, the governor of the Leningrad region, stated that 51 drones were destroyed in the
12:31region and that combat operations continue.
13:00The 22nd International Sunsculture Festival opened on Friday at the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg.
13:08Residents and visitors of Russia's northern capital marveled at the Miss and Fairly Tale-inspired creations, as artists refined their
13:17sculptures.
13:17This year's theme for the festival is the joy of creativity.
13:23For the event, according to organizers, thousands of tons of sand were extracted from carriers in the Leningran region.
13:31The exhibition, which will remain open until September 1, also features a play area for children.
13:50On Saturday, Colombian singer Shakira drew a crowd of two million fans at Copacabana Beach in the Brazilian city of
13:57Rio de Janeiro.
13:59Dressed in the colors of the South American nation, the artists offer a free performance on the sands of the
14:05beach, featuring guest artists such as Anita, Caetano Veloso, Maria Betania and Yvette Sangalo.
14:11Shakira dedicated the concert to women, highlighting their strength and resilience.
14:17The night saw the largest audience for a female Latino performance in the city, reportedly becoming the crowdest of her
14:23entire career.
14:24Shakira's concert was one of a series of events that includes Madonna's performance in 2024 and Lady Gaga's show in
14:302025.
14:31The initiative, organized by the city of Rio de Janeiro, is part of its strategy to boost culture and tourism.
14:45Let's now take a second short break, but we'll be right back with more from the South. Don't go away.
15:19Welcome back.
15:20We'll continue in the Middle East.
15:22Iran has delivered a 14-point proposal to U.S. authorities setting out the storms for ending the war.
15:28U.S. President Donald Trump said he will be reviewing the plan soon.
15:31This plan has been submitted in response to a 9-point U.S. proposal.
15:36Message exchanges between Tehran and Washington have been taking place via Islamabad, despite the continued Iranian distrust of the U
15:43.S.
15:43According to the Iranian First News Agency, Tehran's proposal represents a clear roadmap to end and impose war and start
15:50Tehran's red lines within the framework of any potential agreement.
15:54The Iranian proposal reportedly includes demands for guarantees against future military action, the withdrawn of U.S. forces from areas
16:02near Iran, the lifting of the maritime blockade, the unfreezing of Iranian assets and compensation payments.
16:08It also calls for running hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, as well as the establishment of a new framework
16:14for the managing of the Strait of Formos.
16:25An Iranian series is participating on Saturday in a volunteer initiative in central Tehran, where they took turns holding the
16:32national flag as a show of protests against the U.S.-Israeli war and in support of their government.
16:38The initiative, called No Flagpole, No Problem, began at the busy intersection of Basiar Street, in the capital of the
16:46night on February 28th, following the outbreak of the war.
16:50The idea of gathering around the flag first started in Mashhad and soon spread to Tehran, where flag waving on
16:56the street has become a symbol of support for the government.
16:59From the site, citizens have reaffirmed their support for Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Sayyem Mokhtaba Khamenei, and the
17:07armed forces retaliation against the joint U.S.-Israeli aggression.
17:20Meanwhile, Israel has intensified pressure on Lebanon by expanding forced evacuation orders and resuming deep airstrikes across the south of
17:28the country.
17:29According to local sources, the evacuation orders now cover most towns of the Nabatea and Tehran districts, effectively isolating the
17:36city of Nabatea from its surroundings.
17:38The Israeli army issued new evacuation warnings for nine towns in the Nabatea district, adding to dozens of villages and
17:45towns previously warned starting last Sunday, prompting tens of thousands of residents to flee once again.
17:52The Israeli army called on residents to immediately evacuate their homes and move at least a thousand meters away to
17:58open areas, warning that anyone near Hezbollah elements, facilities or combat assets were putting their life at risk.
18:05Within hours of warning, airstrikes began targeting the affected villages, killing dozens.
18:18Meanwhile, attacks against the Nabatea district completely destroyed Husania, Shia shrine in the town of Duer, a vital importance of
18:27the population.
18:28According to Lebanese authorities, the attack not only demolished a compound with over a century of history, but also affected
18:34the Mortar Cemetery, the headquarters of the Scouts of the Islamic Message and various adjacent social facilities.
18:40The Husayniya, a sanctuary emblematic for stone architecture, was a specialized congregation hall used by Shia Muslims for religious gathering,
18:49education and commemoration ceremonies, particularly during the morning mass of Muharram.
18:55This action reinforces complaints about the violations of the ceasefire in a military campaign that has accounted for thousands of
19:01victims and irreversible damage to the historical heritage of the country's south.
19:15And on Saturday, Israeli forces raided villages in Syria's Quneitira region, next to Golan Heights, as the sign is ringing,
19:24continues its occupation of southern Syrian territories.
19:27According to local sources, Israeli forces shelled agricultural land along the ceasefire line between the towns of Al-Rafid and
19:35Al-Mulaka in southern Quneitra countryside, while also targeting the outskirts of Barika village.
19:43No details have been released so far regarding the casualties and the extent of the damage.
19:47Israeli operations in southern Syria have intensified in recent months, with near-daily reports of raids, home searches, checkpoint installations
19:55and arrests of civilians, including children and shepherds.
19:59Meanwhile, talks between the Syrian and Israeli governments are processing with difficulties, as the Zionist authorities maintain its colonialist pretensions
20:07on Syrian territory.
20:16In other news, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Barcelona on Saturday to demand the release of Gaza-bound flotilla activists
20:23detained by Israeli forces.
20:25Protesters shunted slogans with Palestinian flags and held signs calling for the release of activists Saif Abu Qasheq and Tiago
20:33Avila, who were detained during the Israeli interception of the global southern flotilla.
20:37The multinational civilian mission had set sail from Barcelona in April, carrying humanitarian aid amid the long-running blockade on
20:46Gaza.
20:46Activists reported injuries and mistreatment during and after the raid, including prolonged detention at sea and psychological and physical abuses.
20:55The Spanish government has called for the immediate release of its national and questioned the legality of intercepting civilian vessels
21:02in international waters.
21:11In other news, U.S. authorities approved a $8.6 billion arms sale to Middle East allies without congressional approval,
21:19citing emergency circumstances amid escalating tensions in the region.
21:23U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the announcement after Israel and the Gulf states have faced a barrage
21:29of missile and drone attacks from Iran in retaliation for the joint U.S.-Israeli aggression that started on February 28th
21:36against the Islamic Republic.
21:38As a consequence, it has raised a stockpile of U.S. weapons and straining their air defense systems.
21:44In this context, the weapons sales include the transfer of an advanced precision-kill weapons system and other equipment to
21:51Israel for $992 million.
21:54The purchase of a battle command system by Kuwait for $2.5 billion.
21:59Qatar is set to buy a weapons system and restock its patriot air and missile defense systems for $5 billion.
22:05And the United Arab Emirates will buy a weapons system for $148 million.
22:22Meanwhile, in the United States, the low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has shut down all of its operations as of
22:28this Saturday and in over 30 years of service.
22:30His parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings, announced that it had started an immediate orderly wind-down of its operations and
22:38that it was cancelling all its flights.
22:41The airline that employed around 17,000 people stated that it would process refunds for its passengers.
22:47According to statements made by Spirit executives, debts and the sharp rise in fuel prices since the outbreak of the
22:53war in the Middle East left the company with no choice but to carry that a gradual shutdown.
22:59Throughout the years, Spirit Airlines connected the United States with more than 20 destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
23:12And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
