Short filmTranscript
00:07On the 14th of January 2008, Johnny Benjamin came to Waterloo Bridge with the intention of throwing himself off.
00:16A stranger stepped out of the rush hour crowd and talked him out of it.
00:22His words stopped Johnny from taking his life.
00:26What happened next is an uplifting story that Hollywood is now interested in turning into a movie.
00:33But this is the actual story, filmed as it unfolded.
00:38A story that shows that life is worth living.
00:43I wonder if you can help at all. Looking for a man that changed my life.
00:49Thanks.
00:55Tomorrow we launch the campaign and I'm doing my live interviews which I'm terrified about.
01:13I'm just scared that something's going to come out wrong or I'm going to make a fool of myself or
01:26people won't like me.
01:29Find Mike, the name of the campaign launched today.
01:32A man is searching for the kind stranger who persuaded him not to jump off a bridge exactly six years
01:37ago.
01:38Johnny Benjamin joins us to talk about his mission to find Mike.
01:41He was determined not to let me jump.
01:42So he was just an ordinary bloke walking across Waterloo Bridge.
01:46I'm just so grateful to him for stopping and talking and giving me a different outlook that day
01:55because it really was the moment that my recovery started.
02:01Is it just a case of just wanting to thank him?
02:03I just want to give him a hug. I just want to give him a hug and just say how
02:06grateful I am.
02:07What we know about this man is he was on Waterloo Bridge in London on the 14th of January.
02:12And we're thinking back now to 2008, okay?
02:14You're going to give these flyers out later on, aren't you?
02:16So I'm going to Waterloo Bridge around sort of 10 a.m. this morning.
02:28Cheers.
02:31Thanks.
02:33Can you help me find this man?
02:35Trying to find this man that changed my life.
02:37I'm going to go into a work building on the Strand, so I lived here with the guys there six
02:43years ago.
02:44Six years ago today, yeah.
02:45I was with you.
02:46Yeah, you too. Thank you.
02:46Mike.
02:47Yeah. Well, I can't actually remember his name. It was, you know, it was pretty distressing.
02:52Yeah.
02:53So all I know is that he was, I was 20 at the time, he was a few years older
02:57than me.
02:57He was on his way to work.
02:58Yeah.
02:59Oh, cheers. Thank you.
03:00I'm sorry this morning.
03:00Oh, did you?
03:01Yeah.
03:02I understand. You don't have to explain it. It's like, well done.
03:04Thank you. Thank you.
03:04It's too cold in there anyway.
03:05I know. It is. It is.
03:08You've got to do that.
03:08Do you mind spreading this around?
03:10No. Thank you very much.
03:11I hope he turns up.
03:12I hope so.
03:13What you've done is great. And more things, you're here. And that guy, you know, you
03:17might just say, I don't want to, you know.
03:19No, fair enough.
03:19You know what I mean?
03:20That's fair enough.
03:21He might just send a message to say, I wish Johnny all the best. But in which case, you
03:25now, you're moved on.
03:27Yeah.
03:27You're there and go and help lots of people.
03:29I'm sorry. Oh, thank you so much.
03:31Thank you. Cheers.
03:33Hi.
03:34I think I saw you on the news this morning.
03:36Oh, right. Yeah, yeah. That's all right.
03:37I just wanted to say that it was a pretty interesting story.
03:41Oh, thank you.
03:42And just to say well done, that's all.
03:43Oh, cheers.
03:44I suffer really badly from, like, bad stuff and past and bipolar.
03:50Uh-huh.
03:51And I just wanted to say, like, well done.
03:54That's all.
03:54How are you doing now?
03:55Yeah, yeah.
03:56I'm having treatment again because I kind of had a bad spell for a couple months.
04:02Really?
04:02Yeah.
04:03But it's cool.
04:03I just graduated.
04:05Oh, that's amazing.
04:06Oh, well, that's great.
04:08I know how it feels.
04:09That's all I wanted to say, so.
04:11No, I really appreciate that and being so honest with me.
04:13Good luck.
04:14Thank you so much.
04:15You take care of yourself.
04:16Yeah, you too.
04:17Oh, yeah.
04:18What's your name?
04:19Rosie.
04:20Oh, brilliant, brilliant.
04:21Have you had any luck?
04:22Not yet.
04:22Not yet.
04:23Fingers crossed.
04:23Fingers crossed.
04:24Hopefully.
04:25Hopefully.
04:25Yeah.
04:25Why don't you say to him if you do it?
04:27I don't know.
04:29You look better than you do on the telly.
04:31Oh.
04:32I'll say that as a compliment.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Please love you, my love.
04:37Please share this around the office if you can.
04:39Thanks.
04:40Please spread this message.
04:49I was on the phone to my mum.
04:51Oh, right.
04:51Saying, er...
04:52Oh, that's amazing.
04:53Someone's just handed me this thing.
04:54That's cool.
04:56That's nice, though.
04:57And it's such a nice sentiment as well that you need to find it.
04:59Well, I just want to thank him, you know.
05:01So, what sort of fellow was he?
05:02Oh, I don't know.
05:03I can't...
05:03I was really distressed at the time.
05:05I can't really...
05:06All I know, he was sort of in his mid-twenties, late-twenties.
05:10Erm...
05:10He was on his way to work.
05:11Especially in this city as well, you know?
05:13I know.
05:14There's so many people that just...
05:15No one's got the time of day.
05:16No, I know.
05:17That's it.
05:17That's it.
05:18I usually get it in the neck before my mates are going to chat to him.
05:21Really?
05:22No, that's...
05:23That's great.
05:23That's great.
05:24You don't realise the difference that you can make to someone.
05:26You never know.
05:27You made the right decision.
05:29Oh, cheers, mate.
05:29It's a bit silly in this place.
05:31There's a lot of weird shit going on.
05:33It's quite lovely, really.
05:35It is.
05:36It is.
05:36And, absolutely.
05:37We're all on the same team.
05:38Absolutely.
05:39We're all human, yeah.
05:40Absolutely.
05:41Cheers, mate.
05:42It was really good to meet you.
05:43See you soon.
05:44Cheers, thank you.
05:54We don't know his name.
05:56We don't know what he looks like.
05:57He just happened to be walking past.
05:59We don't know if that was the regular thing that he does or whether he was just happened
06:02to be in London or was at that precise moment in time.
06:10Not only was the hashtag Find Mike trending, but it touched the hearts of thousands of
06:15people.
06:15I just can't believe the response.
06:17I've had messages from all over the world.
06:19It is just phenomenal.
06:19So I've just been on Breakfast TV for the second day in a row.
06:23They actually asked me about it because of such a massive response after my first appearance.
06:28It's 8.53 and our guest this morning has a remarkable tale to tell and he wants your
06:32help.
06:32Johnny Benjamin is looking for the complete stranger who talked him out of throwing himself
06:37off Waterloo Bridge in London.
06:38My memory from that day is so hazy.
06:41Hearing from someone that was saying, you know, it does get better was the turning point
06:45because no one had said that to me before.
06:47If you are either that man, that hero, or you've heard that story and you think you
06:51know who that person is, you can call us 007-224-2000 or go to Johnny's website.
06:56This is a trends map where the hashtag Find Mike is being used.
07:01As you can see, it's spread to Australia already, South Africa.
07:04The calls were just coming in all the time.
07:06Good afternoon to you, Johnny.
07:08Hi, Larry.
07:08What a story.
07:09Just extraordinary.
07:10Was he an older guy, younger guy, same sort of age?
07:12No, he was a young guy.
07:13He was, you know, I was 20 at the time.
07:15Right.
07:16He was around my age, just a few years older than me.
07:18He just reminded me of myself really and what I could be.
07:20The search for the stranger who saved the life of this man.
07:24He hopes his appeal will help jog someone's memory.
07:28And if you think you can help Johnny Benjamin with his appeal, you can find more details on the BBC
07:33London website.
07:34I'm just overwhelmed by the response.
07:40I mean, I can't, I can't really fathom it.
07:44I don't know where this campaign is going, but it's, it's going.
07:56Within a few hours, someone comes forward saying that they are Mike.
08:03They remember talking Johnny down off Waterloo Bridge.
08:08Then a few hours later, another person comes forward saying they are Mike.
08:17And then another.
08:19And another.
08:24Within a few days, Johnny has 38 possible Mikes.
08:35I expected maybe the one person to come forward and say this was me, but I've actually had quite a
08:40number of people come forward.
08:41You have to be really careful with Johnny meeting those people and have quite a high suspicion that they are
08:47Mike.
08:47So we'd hope that you'd have lots of Mikes who had helped someone through a similar situation.
08:54But it might be that you've got people that have their own agenda or just sort of rolling along with
09:01the sort of media interest.
09:04While some of the people claiming to be Mike turn out to be not quite as they seem, the majority
09:10are ordinary people who have helped someone else in distress.
09:17After some investigation, Johnny asks the five of the most likely candidates to send in their photo.
09:24I can't believe how nerve-wracking this is. It's just, you know, it's just, you know, the man that you've
09:31thought about, you know, for so long.
09:33And the man who's like sort of has such a profound impact on you and you could suddenly be about
09:43to recognise that person is scary.
09:49Scary. Sorry.
09:59It's fine.
10:00Shall we go for a break?
10:01It's cool.
10:03I'm going back to a place that was the worst point in my life and so I've got to go
10:12back there.
10:12And, you know, it's not easy.
10:17I can see myself on the train.
10:20You know, I can see myself on the train and I was, you know, on the way up to do
10:28it.
10:28And I can see myself on the train and I'm already going back to that state of mind where I
10:34was out of control.
10:37Not out of control because I'm, no, but I just need to get it over and done with.
10:46Okay, sorry.
10:49That's definitely not Mike.
10:52Okay, come on, come on.
10:57No, I don't think that's him.
11:04No.
11:12No.
11:13No.
11:16No.
11:19Oh my God, it's not him.
11:23Shit, I don't know.
11:26Oh no, I don't know.
11:33I don't know.
11:34I thought I'd know as soon as I saw that picture I thought, oh I don't know.
11:39I know that's definitely
11:40this one's definitely on him
11:41because he is too old
11:43and I know he wasn't that old
11:46I know he wasn't that old
11:50God it makes you sort of go
11:52like you know
11:52because sometimes
11:53in some interviews this week
11:54people have said
11:55is it all in your head
11:56and no he wasn't
11:58I know he wasn't
11:59it's silly to think that
12:02I'm just gonna
12:04immediately recognise Mike
12:05maybe because
12:08because I was in that
12:11that
12:11that
12:15place of despair
12:16that I've completely blocked
12:17everything from
12:18for six years
12:19you know
12:19maybe it's gonna take a lot more
12:21to remember him
12:22than just the photos
12:40before I started this campaign
12:41I never anticipated
12:43that so many people
12:44would come forward
12:45and say
12:45I've actually stopped someone
12:46from taking a life
12:47I just thought
12:48Mike would come along
12:50and he'd say
12:50here I am
12:51but no
12:51I've got so many leads
12:53and it's quite remarkable
12:57because it goes to show
12:59that there's many
13:00Mike's out there
13:03Johnny is not sure
13:05if any of the Mike's
13:06he's heard from
13:07are the man he's looking for
13:08and turns to the police
13:10for help
13:11with the identification
13:13oh hi there
13:14I'm trying to track down
13:15the police report
13:16that might have been made
13:16after an incident
13:17that I was involved in
13:18the thing is I don't know
13:20the officers that were involved in
13:21this was an incident
13:22six years ago
13:23I just wanted to find out
13:24if it was
13:24any way possible
13:25to get the details
13:26from the police report
13:28so the report might not even exist
13:29at all
13:35but yeah
13:36but you definitely got their name
13:38haven't you
13:39in the report
13:43just the number
13:44not the actual name
13:45I didn't realise
13:46you didn't have his name
13:47as well
13:47you've just got his number
13:48and that doesn't even work
13:49so
13:50but there'd be no way
13:51that I could see that log
13:52because of data protection
13:55sure
13:55sure
13:57cool
13:57okay
13:58appreciate your time
13:59cheers
14:00thanks
14:08bye
14:10if we think about
14:11everything that's going on
14:12for Johnny
14:12it's really not surprising
14:13that his emotional memory
14:15his procedural memory
14:16also isn't really
14:20recording things
14:21for him accurately
14:22so I really don't think
14:23it's surprising
14:24that he doesn't recall
14:26the events
14:27and it's probably
14:27a sort of
14:28protective mechanism
14:31out of all the messages
14:32Johnny receives
14:33there's one
14:34that really stands out
14:37hi Johnny
14:38I might be wrong
14:39but a guy at my medical school
14:40around that time
14:41talked somebody down
14:41off Waterloo Bridge
14:43his name was Michael Sammy
14:45Mike Sammington
14:46it may not be your guy
14:47but either way
14:48I'm glad you're okay
14:49and I hope you find
14:50your guardian angel
15:08nice to meet you
15:10thanks cheers
15:13how you doing
15:14not bad
15:15not bad
15:15thank you
15:16kids
15:16grab a seat
15:17cool
15:18just there
15:20sorry to take up your day
15:22oh no problem
15:25so what do you actually
15:26remember your colleague
15:28saying to you
15:29about that day
15:32so at our medical school
15:34we had a mixed hockey club
15:36now on the particular day
15:38in 2008
15:41we were talking about
15:42one of our colleagues
15:43Mike
15:44the week before
15:46he'd actually talked
15:48to somebody down
15:49off Waterloo Bridge
15:50and this led to him
15:51being nicknamed
15:52Good Sam
15:53or the Good Samaritan
15:55which is a name
15:56that went on the back
15:57of his shirt
15:57and kind of stuck
15:58with him through medical school
15:59how old was he at the time
16:01I'm not sure exactly
16:03but he will have been
16:04kind of early 20s
16:05oh okay
16:06a tall thin
16:08sort of fairly fit
16:09and athletic chap
16:11had kind of curly
16:12wavy hair
16:13yeah
16:14dark hair
16:15dark eyes
16:16okay okay
16:17because I've got such
16:18a poor
16:21I've got no recollection
16:22it was the last thing
16:23on your mind
16:23at the time
16:25Ruth's story
16:26matches up to
16:27what Johnny can remember
16:28and he asked to see
16:30the photos
16:30of Dr Mike
16:32so that's the chap
16:34you know
16:34I don't know
16:35whether this is
16:35ringing any
16:37alarm bell
16:38it's probably difficult
16:38for you to know
16:39yeah
16:39I just don't
16:41I mean it would be
16:41interesting to speak
16:42to Mike
16:42and see whether
16:43actually
16:43whether he recognises you
16:45because that's probably
16:46more likely
16:46that he'd recognise you
16:50a bit more digging
16:51reveals that Dr Mike
16:53lives in Wolverhampton
16:55Johnny sends him a message
16:56and he agrees to meet him
16:58in person
16:59this guy
17:00could be
17:01my Mike
17:02his name is actually Mike
17:04and there's a few
17:06details
17:07in our stories
17:07that match up
17:09he was on
17:10Waterloo Bridge
17:11beginning of January
17:122008
17:14and
17:15he was on his way
17:16to medical school
17:17stopped someone
17:18from taking their life
17:19on Waterloo Bridge
17:20it could be me
17:22so
17:23yeah
17:23I'd like to find out
17:26hi
17:26how you doing
17:27hi

17:42thanks
17:42it's strange
17:43trying to think back
17:44I was looking through
17:46and I was quite frantically
17:49reading through
17:50your Twitter page
17:51and I was looking
17:52at various news articles
17:54and things
17:56and I just
17:57it kind of
17:58struck me
18:01quite
18:01you know
18:02as very very familiar
18:05really
18:05I remember
18:06I actually
18:06froze still
18:07for a moment
18:08just
18:08with
18:09quite a bit of fear
18:11surrounding what I was about to
18:13see happen in front of me
18:15and I thought
18:16okay wait a minute
18:17we're all just staring
18:18and we're just going to watch
18:20this person
18:21kill himself in front of us
18:23and take his own life
18:24I think I said
18:25I said something like
18:27sir
18:28you know
18:28you don't want to do this
18:29in response to that
18:30he didn't say
18:31anything
18:32and you know
18:33he
18:35looked me in the eyes
18:37with an extremely
18:40upset
18:41kind of solemn
18:42face
18:43and
18:46you know
18:47just
18:48looked at me
18:49for a moment
18:50held a gaze
18:51and I remember
18:53really feeling
18:54upset
18:54by what I actually saw
18:58and him
18:59letting go
19:00with one hand
19:01and swinging around
19:03so he was facing the water
19:05and at that moment
19:08realizing
19:09he's
19:10he's going to do this
19:11and he's going to
19:12jump off
19:13yeah
19:13I remember
19:15feeling
19:15you know
19:16I have to stop this
19:17jumped in
19:18and grabbed him
19:19you know
19:19he lost his grip
19:20and then I dragged him over
19:22and he was
19:23you know
19:24trembling on the
19:24on the ground
19:25when I actually
19:26pulled him over
19:31and I just remember
19:32him being
19:33extremely
19:34shocked
19:35from
19:35you know
19:36shocked
19:36and just
19:37distraught
19:37on the
19:37on the floor
19:38really
19:41now
19:41I
19:42now I don't know
19:43I don't know
19:44how
19:45how much
19:45of that is
19:47is something
19:48you can relate to
19:49or
19:50can I say
19:51it's
19:52it's such an amazing
19:53thing that you did
19:54to do that
19:55and to have the
19:57courage to do that
19:58is
19:59incredible
19:59I think there's some
20:01details that
20:02are different
20:02between yours
20:04and yours
20:04yeah
20:04and you know
20:05reading up on
20:06some of the
20:07you know
20:07the deeper things
20:08I thought
20:08I did juggle
20:09could this be
20:11could it be me
20:13he's looking for
20:13sure
20:15I did
20:17I saw quite
20:18a few
20:19kind of
20:20discrepancies
20:21in the details
20:21you gave
20:22and I
20:22I just wondered
20:24you know
20:25how many
20:25how much of that
20:27was recalled
20:27by us
20:28and how much
20:29of that
20:29was
20:31you know
20:31was
20:34what actually
20:36happened
20:36I just think
20:37that even
20:38if I don't
20:38get a chance
20:39to find
20:39the person
20:40that I'm
20:40looking for
20:41and thank him
20:42personally
20:42at least
20:43so I've
20:44thanked you
20:54I never enjoyed it
20:55the response
20:56this whole campaign
20:56has got
20:57in terms of
20:58people coming together
21:01and
21:03supporting
21:03supporting this
21:04it's just
21:06I can't get my head
21:07around it
21:16his words
21:17actually prompted
21:17my recovery
21:19now I need
21:20your help
21:20to find him
21:29he could have
21:30just kept
21:30on walking by
21:31but
21:31his actions
21:32they
21:33changed my life
21:35find Mike
21:36tops the trends
21:37in 25 different
21:38countries
21:39and the hashtag
21:40becomes more popular
21:42than Beyonce
21:42and Obama
21:44but despite
21:45the interest
21:46in his story
21:47the trail
21:48has gone cold
21:51I think it could
21:52be very difficult
21:53for Johnny
21:53if he's not able
21:54to find Mike
21:55because I think
21:56he's pinned a lot
21:57on finding Mike
22:01you can imagine
22:02that it might
22:03leave him
22:04feeling vulnerable
22:05might leave him
22:06feeling that
22:06he can't
22:07move forward
22:08I was so sure
22:10when I launched
22:10the campaign
22:12just that one person
22:13would come forward
22:14and say
22:15yeah
22:15it was me
22:16I get delusions
22:17and
22:23I know
22:26I think I can
22:29I think I can
22:30change the world
22:31in my head
22:33something tells me
22:34you know
22:38you're some kind
22:39of superhuman
22:46and of course
22:47in reality
22:48I'm not
23:06Mike
23:07he could have
23:08as I say
23:09could have
23:09walked by
23:11hundreds of people
23:12probably did walk by
23:13but he stopped
23:15and took that
23:16moment
23:17and because of
23:18the decision
23:19that he made
23:20at that time
23:20on that day
23:21and that location
23:25life for Johnny
23:26for us
23:27for all the people
23:29that are affected
23:31by what Johnny does
23:32and you know
23:33his family
23:34his friends
23:34his colleagues
23:35his followers
23:37and all of that
23:39sort of thing
23:39were affected
23:42by that one decision
23:45while the leads
23:46have dried up
23:46the messages
23:48continue to pile in
23:49from people
23:50coming forward
23:51for other reasons
23:55hi Johnny
23:56just wanted to wish
23:57you luck
23:58in finding Mike
23:59you have obviously
24:00come a long way
24:01in the past six years
24:02and I admire
24:03what you are doing
24:04to educate the world
24:05about mental health
24:06our son Richard
24:07took his own life
24:08on the 14th of February
24:102008
24:11at the age of 21
24:13if only someone
24:14had found the right words
24:25since seeing your
24:27Facebook message
24:28you have been
24:28on my mind
24:29all day
24:30my husband
24:31took his own life
24:3224th January
24:332012
24:35he had lost hope
24:36and could not
24:37see any other way
24:38I had no idea
24:39that I was going
24:40to walk into that
24:41on a Tuesday night
24:42to find my husband
24:44I believe
24:45to this day
24:46that I am still
24:46in shock
24:47he left behind
24:48myself
24:49and an 18 month
24:50old daughter Olivia
24:51and our wheels
24:52came crashing down
24:53it was too late
24:54to save my husband
24:55but thank God
24:56that man
24:57helped you that day
24:58I hope that life
24:59has been kind to you
25:00since that day
25:01and you have reflected
25:02on life
25:02and the impact
25:03that way out
25:04would have had
25:04on others
25:05I hope you find
25:06the man you are
25:07looking for
25:07and I just wanted
25:08also to send you
25:09a huge hug
25:10through an email
25:14there's one particular
25:15message
25:15that Johnny
25:17can't ignore
25:19hi Johnny
25:20just a little note
25:21to say I've seen
25:22your quest
25:22to find the man
25:23who saved your life
25:24and it really
25:24struck a chord in me
25:26back in 2008
25:28my twin brother
25:29Stephen jumped
25:30off Tower Bridge
25:31on our 27th birthday
25:32in April
25:35I've often wondered
25:36if anyone could have
25:37saved him
25:37or talked him down
25:38but after years
25:40of research
25:40I know that
25:41trying to find
25:41that answer
25:42is an impossible task
25:47it just feels
25:51yeah it feels
25:52more than just
25:53about finding
25:55this stranger
25:55for me
25:56it's it's
25:59it's about
26:02connecting with
26:03with other people
26:09compelled by her
26:10story
26:12Johnny decides
26:13to visit her
26:19I carry a lot
26:20of guilt
26:20as someone
26:20who was left
26:21behind from
26:22suicide
26:22and you carry
26:24a lot of guilt
26:24from that
26:25it hurts
26:25because there
26:26are a lot
26:27of people
26:27that just
26:28left with
26:28questions
26:29you see
26:29but I guess
26:30that at the time
26:31you were standing
26:32there
26:32you weren't
26:33thinking about
26:33that
26:34were you
26:34no no no
26:35no your head's
26:36just in
26:37so it's such
26:38a confusing
26:39place
26:40the pain
26:41is so kind
26:42of intense
26:44that nothing
26:45else kind
26:45of can come
26:46into that
26:47that kind
26:47of wall
26:49that's surrounding
26:51you you know
26:51you can't see
26:52anything
26:53no matter who
26:54it is you
26:54just can't
26:55see kind
26:56of over
26:56that wall
26:57do you feel
26:58like you
26:58couldn't have
26:59gone to
27:00anyone
27:00leading up
27:02to you
27:02standing there
27:03the thing
27:04I didn't
27:04want to
27:04disappoint
27:05people
27:07that's the
27:07thing
27:07it sounds
27:08strange
27:08doesn't it
27:08I didn't
27:09want to
27:12disappoint
27:12the people
27:13around me
27:13and say
27:15how I was
27:15really feeling
27:16and I
27:16thought
27:20oh yeah
27:22I didn't
27:22want to
27:23kind of
27:23see their
27:23faces
27:23and see
27:25their reactions
27:25to that
27:27knowing that
27:28I didn't
27:28want to be
27:28here anymore
27:30it sounds
27:31like
27:31absolutely
27:32what
27:33Stephen
27:33would
27:33say
27:34because
27:34he was
27:35so far
27:36out of my
27:36reach
27:37I couldn't
27:37get to
27:37him
27:38and he
27:39he just
27:40closed up
27:43and now
27:44I mean
27:46everyone's
27:47different
27:47but just
27:47through
27:48talking to
27:48you and
27:48I think
27:49you both
27:49went through
27:50the same
27:50things
27:52it's just
27:53so sad
27:54that
27:55you know
27:55people can
27:56just isolate
27:57themselves
27:57and turn
27:58their back
27:59on people
28:00that want
28:00to help
28:01not through
28:01any kind
28:02of spite
28:03but because
28:03you're embarrassed
28:04or you're
28:05afraid
28:05I get angry
28:07because
28:07I wish
28:09he'd given
28:09me the chance
28:10you know
28:11and I wish
28:12he'd just
28:13said something
28:14instead of
28:15going into
28:15his shell
28:18I know
28:19that he did
28:20it around
28:20our birthday
28:21which hurts
28:22me
28:22because
28:23forever
28:24forever and
28:25ever and
28:25ever
28:26my birthday
28:26will be
28:27tainted
28:27by the death
28:28of a twin
28:30and it's
28:30like losing
28:30an arm
28:32can I say
28:33something
28:33that I hope
28:34you don't
28:34mind
28:35no no
28:42it's just
28:42one thing
28:43that I
28:43remember
28:45in going
28:46to the
28:46bridge
28:47that I
28:47kept
28:48saying
28:48to
28:48myself
28:48it was
28:49more than
28:50anything
28:50else
28:52more than
28:53anything
28:53else
28:54I don't
28:54want
28:54my family
28:55to feel
28:56guilty
28:57that was
28:58the one
28:58thing
28:58that
28:58I was
29:03so desperate
29:04clinging
29:05onto
29:05I just
29:06don't want
29:07them to
29:07feel at
29:07all
29:10responsible
29:10or guilty
29:11or
29:14that was
29:15the thing
29:15the whole
29:17way that
29:18journey
29:18was like
29:21I hope
29:21this is
29:22right to
29:22say that
29:23I think
29:24it's making
29:24me feel
29:25a lot
29:25better
29:27I just
29:28wonder
29:28I always
29:29wonder why
29:29did he leave
29:30me a note
29:31you know
29:33and so many
29:34people have
29:35said he was
29:35not in that
29:36headspace
29:36right then
29:37to even
29:37leave a note
29:38did you plan
29:40today I'm
29:41going to die
29:41is that
29:41is that
29:42what you
29:42thought
29:43I did
29:43yeah
29:45I did
29:46the night
29:46before
29:49yeah
29:51I did
29:51the night
29:51before
29:54I planned
29:55it all out
29:55I just
29:55got to
29:56the stage
29:56where
30:03I saw
30:04the only
30:04way that
30:04I could
30:04achieve peace
30:05was
30:07because you're
30:08so desperate
30:08to find peace
30:09you know
30:10how can
30:11you hide
30:12like
30:12I just
30:13thought
30:13I'm amazed
30:14how can
30:15you hide
30:15that
30:15how can
30:16you just
30:16hide that
30:17from anyone
30:17I just
30:19I was scared
30:20so I didn't
30:21tell them
30:22and yeah
30:23there were so
30:23many opportunities
30:24that evening
30:24and that next
30:25morning to
30:26tell people
30:28but as I was
30:29saying I had
30:29that in my
30:30head I saw
30:31that as the
30:31only way
30:32out of it
30:35just
30:35couldn't
30:38see
30:39past that
30:40moment
30:41on the bridge
30:41it was
30:43sort of drawn
30:44towards it
30:45no one's
30:45ever spoken
30:46to me like
30:46this
30:47you're giving
30:48me an insight
30:49that I haven't
30:49seen
30:49as long as
30:50that's alright
30:51yeah of course
30:52I just don't
30:52want you to get
30:52upset
30:53no no not
30:53at all
30:56it's good for
30:56me to talk
30:57about as well
30:57are you ever
30:58scared that
30:58that would
30:59come back
30:59or is that
31:00something
31:01that's
31:02do you know
31:03what
31:04I've been
31:04I've been
31:04suicidal again
31:05since that
31:06day
31:06but
31:08now
31:08I say
31:13sorry
31:13I say this
31:14is how I'm
31:14feeling
31:20because I know
31:21that I've done
31:21it before
31:22and I can
31:22do it again
31:24but you know
31:25to ask for help
31:26and I know
31:26and I know
31:27that
31:29I can say
31:30the words
31:30you know
31:31I'm feeling
31:31suicidal
31:32at the moment
31:34and that's
31:34the difference
31:35that's what
31:35I couldn't
31:35say before
32:08having all but
32:09given up hope
32:10of finding Mike
32:12Johnny checks
32:13a message
32:14in his inbox
32:24although his name's
32:25not Mike
32:26everything else
32:28finally fits
32:37for six years
32:38Johnny has been
32:39dreaming of the
32:40moment when he
32:41might meet the
32:41man who helped
32:42turn his life
32:43around
32:44since launching
32:45his search
32:46his story has
32:47been followed
32:48by 319 million
32:50people around
32:51the world
32:52it has produced
32:53leads from far
32:54and wide
32:54that he's pursued
32:56and ultimately
32:57discarded
32:57now he's about
32:59to meet the man
33:00he thinks
33:01could be his
33:02Mike
33:02this guy
33:05is probably
33:06the strongest
33:07lead
33:09and is potentially
33:12the man I'm
33:13looking for
33:13so
33:15there's a lot
33:16riding on
33:16today
33:19it's a very
33:20surreal sort of
33:20feeling
33:21and
33:24I'm petrified to be
33:25honest
33:26I'm petrified
33:28are you ready
33:29ready for this
33:29no I'm not

33:35ready
33:35no
33:37you can
33:37never be
33:38ready for a
33:38moment like
33:38this to be
33:39honest
33:39I'd like to
33:40give him a hug
33:42although
33:42I don't know
33:43if that's too
33:43awkward
33:47I'd like to
33:50but
33:51I don't know
33:53I just
33:53kind of
33:54see how it
33:54goes
33:56I mean
33:56I'm not
33:58especially a
33:58touchy feely
33:59Percy
34:00sorry
34:01sorry
34:02when I greet
34:03him I would
34:04I'd like to
34:04give him a hug
34:06but
34:06just have to
34:07see how it
34:08goes
34:09he might not
34:10he might not
34:11want to have a
34:11hug which is fair
34:12enough like
34:13might not want me
34:14jumping on him
34:14which is
34:15completely
34:16understandable
34:19but it'd be nice
34:20to maybe
34:21maybe give him
34:22a hug
34:22definitely a
34:23handshake
34:24but a hug
34:25would be nice
34:35and
34:49hiya

35:20it's really nice things you said and you know um it's yeah it's so strange to see you again but
35:27you know yeah it seems like only good things have happened for you so yeah but do you want to
35:32take
35:32a seat yeah absolutely wow uh how are you doing how are you doing i'm fine i'm fine yeah yeah
35:38absolutely
35:39thanks so much for uh uh god it's all coming back yeah oh
35:54yeah wow imagine how it must feel you know to to be reliving it you know sorry
36:01no yeah it's just unbelievable because oh my gosh like you know do you do you remember me yeah now
36:07i've seen you like it's all coming back really you're standing inside of me and um because before
36:13it's such a hazy memory and now and now it's it's all it's all coming back and uh yeah i
36:17can see you
36:18i can see you there on the side of the bridge and uh wow it's amazing because because i i
36:26completely
36:27had a blank of what you look like it was it was really cold that day mate i don't know
36:32if you
36:32remember do you remember how cold it was i saw you sitting there on the bridge and you know i
36:39knew
36:39straight away like you came it came into my vision and i knew what was happening straight away
36:48and i didn't think i'll get to you because there was quite a distance between between us you know
36:55um and i kept walking walking walking and there were people walking past all the time so
37:02and then i got up to you and you know i don't know if you want me to tell you
37:08what happened yeah no no
37:09i'm i'm i sort of have a sort of memory you know of me going to the kind of i
37:17don't know like the
37:17middle of the bridge and stepping over the barrier and standing on the edge and kind of my hands were
37:25behind i don't know if i don't know if that's like this like i mean i walked up to you
37:34and i said why
37:35you're sitting on the bridge you know and you told me straight away that you were going to jump and
37:43and i just thought there's no way i'm going to let this guy jump off today there's no way not
37:48from standing here you know um you know and then you started to tell me about yourself yeah um
37:59because i asked you you told me you ran away don't say where i've run away from you said you
38:04ran away
38:04from like a hospital i'd just been diagnosed with schizophrenia a month before i ran away to
38:12the bridge and um i was put into hospital and such a scary time because um i didn't know that
38:21i was
38:21ill just had no idea that i was i was ill um i was i was sharing a voice in
38:26my head uh yeah i was
38:29i was having delusions and i thought i was uh do you know the treatment show yeah yeah i thought
38:33i was on my own version of the treatment show and um this has been going on for 10 years
38:39and uh
38:41it got to the point where just i couldn't cope and i couldn't look after myself and
38:47i didn't realize i was so ill and um
38:52and uh basically i had a psychosis and um i thought i was being possessed by the devil
38:58and um i uh i didn't tell family or friends um you know because i just thought that the voice
39:07i
39:07was hearing was real so do you do you think like this is not right or were you like this
39:14is fine
39:14because this is the way it is and you didn't know any better i didn't know any better i thought
39:18that everyone heard a voice in their heads so when the psychiatrist said to me you know
39:24it's all in your head it's not real it was like a such a massive shock because i was like
39:30yeah but
39:31we all hear a voice don't we it's just just that i've been you know maybe granted a i thought
39:36i was
39:36hearing the devil so i just thought i'd been granted a a bad voice he was like no no no
39:41it's
39:42it's all in your head i couldn't take it in and uh i felt like i felt like my life
39:48had sort of been
39:48a lie and i didn't know who it was and it was just such a difficult time and i i
39:54was i was petrified
39:59but yeah it was you saying to me
40:05you can get through it that was suddenly like my whole perspective changed and i was like
40:13it's the stranger that i've never even met doesn't know anything about me it's telling me that
40:20i'll be okay and i can get through it and just stopping just talking to me just
40:26giving me that time of day and just saying to me
40:30there's another way and and it can get better honestly from that day like it was it restored
40:36my faith in humanity and um i wouldn't be here if you didn't stop i think that's the most incredible
40:42thing is i'm trying to get my head around is that you know um you know
40:50it's nice to know that somehow i've made a difference yeah you know i mean you've made
40:54incredible you know yeah you made incredible difference um it must have been awful for you
41:00mate um you know sounds like you've and now you know you're you're dealing with it you know it's
41:08a testament you know yeah really proud of you oh thank you
41:21it's so strange because it feels like i'd say it feels like kind of we're friends and yet
41:31you know it's the only second time i met you i have a feeling we will be now yeah yeah
41:35definitely
41:44found him
41:48found him
41:51i found mike
41:55everyone well most people probably want to meet their heroes
42:00i have my mind i have my mind today that's amazing
42:09just to feel
42:11on top of the world the campaign has been so huge it feels like the start of something maybe
42:31you
42:35dear johnny thank you for reminding all of us how life-changing a random act of kindness can be
42:44i would like to take the time to share with you just how much his story touched me over here
42:48in canada
42:48the day i had decided to take my life was the summer day of september 12 2002 in order to
42:54relieve the
42:55pain i was going through due to the voices in my head living with a mental illness is rough at
43:00times
43:00but you determine your life's path not your illness
43:05johnny man i just want to say thanks for being there and i was going through my difficult times
43:08and i can't even describe how helpful it's been to get to know meet and connect with someone like
43:13you who understands so much about what i've been going through these past few years
43:20thanks for showing there's hope for people with severe mental illnesses good luck and god bless
43:26you
43:27hi johnny i just want to drop you a quick line to thank you for the various steps you've taken
43:30over the past few weeks to highlight mental health issues i'm currently going through the
43:34early part of recovery stages from depression where i too was ready to take my own life i've seen a
43:40doctor though and now they're referring me to counseling which i believe is the right thing for
43:43me well i think so anyhow what's your story unfold stopped me from taking my own life so massive thank
43:49you
43:57it feels like that chapter is almost closed now those six years ago and everything that i went through and
44:06um it's a complete contrast to to the feelings that i had that day when i first met um neil
44:17complete
44:19contrast um i'm i was i was completely at rock bottom and now i'm just so happy and um kind
44:30of yeah i feel
44:31like i've gone full circle and uh it's just amazing to to be able to say that i think when
44:38you've gone
44:38through something that's such a such a bad period and you can look back and realize i just i realize
44:47how sort of how far i've come i guess every day more than a quarter of a million people pass
44:56through
44:56waterloo sometimes when we are part of a crowd and we see someone in trouble it's easier to walk on
45:05by
45:07but we actually all have a choice the truth is any of us could be a mike
45:17though there are times i still struggle i know that i can overcome any adversity in life
45:25this is all thanks to one man who showed me that life does get better
45:30now i want to offer that same message to others who need it
45:33that in spite of the hard times life really is worth living
45:50somewhere
45:51that's
45:52i want to
45:54i want to
46:09i want to
46:21I'm looking off your fears
46:27And once I knew
46:30I was not magnificent
