Politicsnation With Al Sharpton - Season 15 - Episode 05 Emgsub
Transcript
00:02Good evening and welcome to Politics Nation. We're following breaking news out of Minneapolis.
00:09We're awaiting a media briefing from the mayor of Minneapolis and other Minnesota lawmakers.
00:16Following this morning's fatal shooting of a 37-year-old residence, local officials familiar
00:23with the investigation. Tell MS now that the man shot by federal agents has been identified as ICU
00:31nurse Alex Preti. The incident was caught on camera. We warn you, the video is graphic.
01:12What the f***? What the f*** is wrong with you?
01:29What the f***? What the f*** is wrong with you? Honestly.
01:51MS now has not yet confirmed exactly what happened in the video or what happened in the
01:58moments leading up to the shooting. But Homeland Security officials say the victim approached
02:04Border Patrol officers with a semi-automatic handgun, which officers attempted to disarm
02:11but were violently resisted. Minneapolis police chief says the victim is believed to have been
02:18a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. Meanwhile, protesters and law enforcement
02:24continue to clash tonight as temperatures drop in the Twin Cities. The Minnesota National Guard
02:32has been mobilized from ready posture to active support. With Governor Tim Walz calling on the
02:40president to remove ICE from his state. And the president continues to blame the governor
02:47and the mayor of Minneapolis for the unrest. We will bring you the briefing when it happens.
02:54In the meantime, we're joined by MS now reporter Alex Tibet. Alex, what's the latest?
03:02Well, we're here at the scene where this tragedy transpired earlier this morning. This is where
03:08Alex Peretti lost his life, the second ICE observer to lose their life this month after Renee Nicole Good
03:18was also shot and killed by a federal agent just a few weeks ago. As you can see, there's a
03:25couple dozen
03:26people praying, lighting candles. You can see a cross with the name Alex Peretti written on it. It's a very
03:35solemn
03:36moment here, a somber moment, as this community continues to process tragedy after tragedy.
03:47Earlier today, we saw protests at the scene that got a bit violent. We saw tear gas, pepper spray, pepper
03:56balls. Right now, we see a couple hundred people gathered down the street expressing their anger. And as you
04:06noted, the Minnesota National Guard has been deployed to the Whipple building, which is the federal building where ICE has
04:14been using as a headquarters during the last month and a half or so as protesters continue to converge
04:20there. Now, I want to introduce you to Steve, who's been here all morning. And Steve, you were here when
04:27these protests hit a boiling point and you found a lot of things on the ground. I want you to
04:33show me
04:33what you found and explain to me what what they are. Yes. So the first thing I got is poctic
04:39tactical gas.
04:41Basically, it's used to be used by I'm going to emphasize this trained law enforcement. Let me
04:47repeat that. Trained law enforcement should be using this gas. Let's remind that folks, because
04:53used for operations after five years from date. So and what else do you have? We have besides the gas,
05:00we got a skeet shell tactical bullet thing. As you can see, there's a bullet on it. So although they're
05:09not
05:09firing regular bullets, they are firing variants of bullets, and this would scatter out and do shots.
05:14And we have one more I got one more non lethal round that you were you were talking to me
05:20about.
05:21Is that correct? Yes. This is an impact round. They come out of little turrets and they hit you
05:28where it where it hurts the most. Although not lethal, it will bandage bones, leave bruises,
05:34and definitely leave a punch. And it's also bullet caliber in it. And and that round blinded somebody
05:42about a week ago here. And yet these federal agents are continuing to use it. What does that say
05:49about how the Trump administration is reacting to what's happening on the ground here? The Trump
05:55administration is doubling down on keeping fear into the streets and the community, as you can see
05:59right before you, is saying we are not going to take this anymore. Ice ice should have should leave
06:07this city if they if I were them. You have lives, you have children to go back to. Do not
06:13be murderers
06:14anymore. Please go home and leave. Steve, thank you so much for your time. And you heard the frustration,
06:23you heard the exasperation. That is something that I've been hearing echoed all day, Rev, as just every
06:31day here in Minneapolis, whether it's the detaining of a five year old boy or whether it's another
06:38ice observer losing their life to a federal agent. Every day here brings a new tragedy. Rev.
06:47Oh, thank you. MSNOW reporter Alex Tibet in Minneapolis. And we will certainly keep
06:53monitoring with you. Joining me now is Minnesota State Senate President Bobby, a champion and
07:00Minnesota State Representative Caleb Berg, both Democrats. State Representative Berg, State Senator
07:08Champion. Thank you both for joining us tonight. We begin with today's fatal shooting and the breaking
07:15news that the Minnesota National Guard has been mobilized to an active support role to support
07:22state and local law enforcement at the request of Governor Tim Walz. Here's what Walz had to say earlier today.
07:48This federal occupation of Minnesota long ago stopped being a matter of immigration enforcement. It's a
07:54campaign of organized brutality against the people of our state. And today that campaign claimed another
07:59life. Donald Trump, I call on you once again, remove this force from Minnesota. They are sowing chaos and
08:08violence. We've seen deadly violence from federal agents again and again and again.
08:16Earlier today, the president, Donald Trump, on Truth Social claimed, quote,
08:22the mayor and governor are inciting insurrection with their pompous, dangerous and arrogant rhetoric,
08:30end of quote. He added that without this purge in your state, quote, you would see something far worse than
08:38you are witnessing today, end of quote. What's your reaction tonight to that State Representative Berg?
08:47Well, thank you so much for having me, Reverend. It's simply not true. What you see on the ground
08:54here in Minnesota is community members wrapping their arms around each other. We're escorting union
09:01workers to their cars after their after their shifts. We are bringing groceries to people that are too
09:08afraid to leave their home. Tens of thousands of peaceful protesters took to the streets of Minneapolis
09:14in a beautiful act of solidarity and justice. And the very next morning, we wake up to this horrific
09:21tragedy. A union member, an ICU nurse at the VA taking care of our veterans. This is astonishing.
09:30And what the federal administration is saying is happening here is wrong.
09:38Representative Champion, same question to you.
09:42Well, let me just say, first of all, thank you for having us so that you could cast this light
09:46on
09:46what is happening here in Minnesota. I know that you've been here before and you know
09:51that Minnesota is a loving state. And what you're seeing is Minnesota's reaction and concern around
09:58the aggressive acts of ICE. We've had U.S. citizens arrested by ICE. We've had peaceful protesters
10:06and where ICE members have been in close proximity to them and spraying
10:11irritants in their eyes at close range. You've had children detained by ICE. And let's be clear that
10:19there are over 3,000 ICE members, ICE agents here in Minnesota. And if you compare that to the fact
10:27that in Minneapolis and St. Paul combined, there's no more than 1,400 police officers. So there's at
10:34least double, if not triple, the number of ICE agents here in a medium-sized city. And they've been aggressive
10:40and they've been terrorizing our wonderful state.
10:45So as you say this, Representative Berg, yesterday, hundreds of Minneapolis businesses shut down as
10:54part of a general strike in opposition to ICE. Nearly 16,000 people protested in the streets,
11:02according to labor leaders. And dozens of clergy members were arrested at a peaceful sit-in at
11:08Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. Now, polls show the president's immigration purges, losing support
11:18nationally. Do you think that popular opposition can force the administration to relent?
11:26You know, I'm not sure what would force this administration to relent. All we can do is ensure
11:33that we continue to observe and document what is happening in our communities. We will not let
11:39them do this to our neighbors without bearing witness. We need to continue to peacefully protest.
11:45We can't give them the riots and the violence that they want. Their cruelty is the point. So we have
11:53to ensure we are peacefully protesting, documenting what is happening to our neighbors. And I do hope
11:59that the popular opinion will finally make them take some sort of action. But ICE needs to get out of
12:06Minnesota now. President Trump and Kristi Noem can make that happen. It needs to happen now.
12:12Now, while all this is happening, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche says that presently,
12:18there is no federal investigation into Renee Good's killing earlier this month. Instead,
12:24he directed FBI agents to shut down a civil rights probe of the shooting and to investigate Good for
12:33suspected assault on the officer that shot her. According to three people briefed on these discussions,
12:40a federal judge denied that search warrant. And two of those sources say that an FBI supervisor overseeing
12:47corruption cases for the Minneapolis field office resigned in frustration over how the DOJ is
12:55handling goods killing and the unrest in Minneapolis. Senator Champion, is this approach sustainable,
13:02especially now that we had yet another fatal shooting?
13:07Well, let's be clear that I'm a lawyer, first of all, outside of being Senate President. And I
13:12understand the importance of transparency. I understand the importance of following the evidence.
13:18I understand that because that is what creates trust when we think in terms of people trusting their
13:24government. You've seen the DOJ or DHS, I would say in particular, make decisions not to investigate
13:30what happened. And in fact, choose to do something opposite, which is to investigate not only good, but also
13:37the spouse of good. And there's been a reaction to that because we believe in our government. We believe
13:43in people acting and behaving in a way that that makes us proud. And you have articulated with real
13:50clarity as to some of the decisions that have been made. Senator, let me interrupt you. I want to go
13:55to the mayor. Mayor Frey is about to make a statement. We're going live.
14:00The city of Minneapolis is filing a declaration after today's shooting to encourage the judge to
14:06rule on a temporary restraining order on Monday that would grant us immediate relief and help would
14:14help stop this operation that has been so harmful to the city of Minneapolis. The state of Minnesota
14:19has resulted in multiple shootings and tragic deaths. I have formally requested assistance from
14:26the National Guard to support the limited number of officers that we have in the Minneapolis Police
14:31Department. We have around 600 officers in total. Days off have been canceled. Our incredible Minneapolis
14:39police officers have been working tirelessly to do their day-to-day work and simultaneously
14:44they are put in the middle of these chaotic situations. We will not be able to do this on our
14:50own and so we are getting assistance from both mutual aid jurisdictions as well as the request to the
14:56governor for the National Guard and we're appreciative of the assistance. Our community is tired. Our
15:03officers are tired. Our businesses are tired. And this additional support is necessary. And again,
15:11the chaos that we are seeing is caused directly by ICE, border control, and this federal administration.
15:19Our top priority is keeping our neighbors and businesses safe. And the additional support will
15:25help us do that. Our community service officers are helping to deliver food to families that are in
15:31need. Community members are out there peacefully protesting, making sure that their voices are heard.
15:37They're escorting workers to their jobs. They're taking care of daycares. It has been extraordinary how
15:45people around our city have stepped up during this difficult time. And there is an incredible group
15:49of leaders and senators and members of Congress that are here with me to deliver a powerful message
15:56in just a couple of minutes. We're also working closely with our immigration task force to make sure that
16:02clear and transparent information is coordinated. We'll continue to do everything in our power to keep our
16:09neighbors safe and to stand up for our immigrant communities. Most of the protests that we've seen
16:15have remained peaceful. Let's keep it that way. Let's not counter Donald Trump's chaos with our own
16:21version of chaos here. I understand that people are angry. I'm angry. I understand that people are
16:28experiencing trauma. It makes sense. Our communities have been placed on the very front line and this
16:36has been ongoing now for weeks. It must end. Remember, it's only our city that will suffer
16:43if there is damage or destruction that is done. Finally, to the victim's family and friends,
16:50our hearts are with you. Our love goes out to you. I know that there is nothing that I can
16:56say right now
16:56that will ease the pain. But I hope you know that Minneapolis cares deeply for you. There are 435,000
17:06residents that will do everything possible to stand with you. With that, I'll turn it over to Chief O'Hara,
17:12who can give more of an update on the plans for tonight.
17:20Thank you, Mayor. Good evening. I'm going to provide a brief update on the events today
17:28and our plans to maintain order in the city. I recognize that this is a volatile and emotional
17:34situation. And our focus remains, as it always has been, on de-escalation, slowing things down,
17:42and maintaining peace and order in this city. The situation is stable right now and it is peaceful,
17:51and we intend to keep it that way. After our last press update, additional residents and
17:59demonstrators gathered today and the situation deteriorated. Local and state law enforcement
18:05officers were surrounded on multiple sides by a mix of protesters and also agitators who engaged in
18:12unlawful acts. Individuals began erecting barricades, throwing glass bottles, ice chunks,
18:19and at least two separate fires were started in the immediate vicinity. Minneapolis police had to
18:26escort firefighters so that they could safely extinguish those fires.
18:31The number one priority of our police officers is to protect life and maintain public safety for all
18:38people in our community. And so given the volatility and rising public safety risks for residents,
18:47for demonstrators, and police officers, state and local law enforcement did deploy less lethal and gas
18:54munitions at that assembly in order to allow for a safe egress of law enforcement and to prevent further
19:01violence and damage. We do everything that we possibly can to de-escalate whenever possible.
19:08And the actions that were taken today were in response to a dangerous and escalating situation
19:13that already had multiple confrontations. The gathering at the scene now is peaceful,
19:19and we need everyone to respect the lives and property of all people in our community.
19:26In order to maintain that peace, we have established a vehicle exclusionary zone in the affected area.
19:33That zone has allowed traffic to be safely managed and has significantly reduced the risk of escalation,
19:41ensuring access for emergency vehicles, for residents of the area, and for lawful, peaceful demonstrations.
19:49This zone will be maintained by uniformed police officers of the Minneapolis Police Department,
19:54working alongside members of the Minnesota National Guard. National Guard members will be wearing
20:00fluorescent yellow safety traffic vests and will be working alongside uniformed Minneapolis Police.
20:07In addition to the Minnesota State Patrol and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office that assisted the scene,
20:12the St. Paul Police, Ramsey County Sheriff's Office, and numerous Hennepin County Suburban Police Departments
20:19are assisting with answering 911 calls in the City of Minneapolis today.
20:25The loss of human life, yet again, is a tragedy. We pray all people can recognize that.
20:31And we extend our condolences, as the mayor has said, to the loved ones of the deceased.
20:37To the people of our city, we understand that the pressure has been building for weeks.
20:43We understand the hurt and frustration that this causes.
20:47But again, if you choose to come out, if you choose to demonstrate, peacefully assemble.
20:53Do so lawfully. And understand that the men and women in this uniform, standing here tonight,
20:59are committed first and foremost to protecting the lives of every single person in this city.
21:06We will continue to monitor the update, monitor the situation, and provide updates as needed.
21:12Senator?
21:13Thank you. Thank you, Mayor. Thank you, Chief, for your strong leadership during this crisis.
21:21I'm joined today by Senator Smith, as well as Representatives McCollum and Morrison.
21:28And joining us in a statement are Representatives Craig and Omar.
21:32Our message is really clear and straightforward. We need ICE out of Minnesota.
21:41They are not making us more safe. As the tragic, tragic killing this morning,
21:48as people saw it viscerally on that video shows us they are making us less safe.
21:55With 3,000 agents, which of course includes border control, outnumbering the sworn police officers
22:03in Minneapolis and St. Paul by 3 to 1 and even larger than the 10 metropolitan police departments.
22:11This is completely out of whack, completely out of balance, and now three people have been shot,
22:20two resulting in death. One, Renee Good, mother of three, and now Alex Preddy, a 37-year-old Minneapolis man,
22:32a citizen, also a nurse. They both have families that love them very much.
22:40This city has been under siege.
22:42And I want to make something clear. As the mayor and the police chief are doing their job
22:48for this city, it's not just the cities. It's not just Minneapolis and St. Paul,
22:53as you'll hear from the members of Congress. It is the suburbs where kids have been lured in and abducted.
23:01It is small towns all across our state, rural areas. This has gone way beyond some stated purpose
23:10of the fraud investigation or apprehending violent offenders. That's not what this is about anymore,
23:17when you have 3,000 agents, overwhelming sworn police officers. I took part in that peaceful
23:25and powerful march yesterday, all those peaceful people. And then we wake up this morning to this
23:33poorer. As members of Congress, we are calling on this administration to get ice out of our towns,
23:42off of our streets. It will make us more safe. We, as a congressional group up here, strongly opposed
23:53the ice funding this week. We opposed it this summer when our Republican colleagues tripled the budget,
24:0375 billion. It is now more than the FBI. They reduced the training from five months to 47 days.
24:13And these are the results. We are also calling for a full and transparent investigation.
24:22We have done this before in Minnesota, coordinating with local and state and federal law enforcement.
24:29And if they're not going to do it, then they need to get out of the way and allow our
24:33very professional
24:34Bureau of Criminal apprehension to conduct the investigation into these killings.
24:41And finally, we call on our Republican colleagues to stand with us. I know they know what's going on
24:49here because it's happening in their own districts. We have, of course, these shootings,
24:54things. But it is a lot more than that. They know that something's wrong when a Hmong elder is pulled
25:00out of a house in his underwear and slippers. And they figure out, about an hour later, they got the
25:10wrong guy. And in fact, the guy they were looking for is actually in jail. Or a two-year-old,
25:15a case my
25:15office worked on, in addition to hundreds more, who's taken with her dad and then put on a plane to
25:22Texas
25:23office, when her mom is desperately trying to get her. We got her back. But none of this should be
25:30happening. None of it. So we call on our Republican colleagues to join us because we have warned this
25:38administration. I have personally warned them that there would be more deaths, that more of this
25:43would happen. And clearly they're not listening. So we asked people around the country to talk to
25:48their Republican representatives to make clear that this is not the America that is ours.
25:57This has got to stop. And with that, I turn it over to my colleague, Senator Smith.
26:06Good afternoon, everyone. So today, federal agents beat and then shot multiple times and killed
26:1337-year-old Alex Jeffrey Preddy, a U.S. citizen, a Minneapolis resident and a VA nurse. Eyewitness
26:22video shows once again, reckless, violent and dangerous federal agents taking the life of a
26:29Minnesotan. And rather than following standard law enforcement practice, which is focused on public
26:35safety and de-escalation, they have killed another person. And the Trump administration has already
26:41called Alex Preddy a domestic terrorist. He was a nurse. We send our heartfelt condolences
26:52to his family and to his friends. And all Americans should be outraged at this unaccountable,
26:58violent federal force, which is operating with impunity in our city. And you need to know,
27:04America, that if it can happen here, it can happen in your community too. So we gather here to say,
27:11first, I want to say to the president, you must stop Operation Metro Surge immediately
27:19and send these ICE agents home so our communities can be safe. Second, it is essential that trusted,
27:26impartial state investigators at the BCA are allowed to fully investigate what happened here today.
27:34Third, I urge my neighbors to express our grief and outrage at this killing and at the federal
27:42invasion of our cities peacefully and with the love that we showed yesterday when so many thousands of
27:49us showed up in support of our community. And finally, we must have our Republicans, Republicans in Congress,
27:58they must join with us to condemn this violent and unfettered violent abuse of power and to stop it.
28:06And they can do that by by refusing to fund this agency so long as it continues to kill and
28:14terrorize
28:15Americans. That is what Senator Klobuchar and I will be working on in the United States Senate.
28:21And I just want to close by thanking so much the local law enforcement and fire departments,
28:29not only here in Minneapolis, but all across the state that have been doing everything that they could,
28:34everything that you can to keep our cities safe. I once work in City Hall and I know what it's
28:40like.
28:40And I am so grateful for their relentless work to keep our communities safe.
28:49Representative McAlton.
28:52Well, we have a saying in Congress that we agree and reflect in our in our remarks,
28:59those that have spoken before us. So I'm going to take a slightly different tact.
29:04You know, today, this morning, Saturday, we lost another life. And it didn't have to be that way.
29:13To all the protesters who have been out there peacefully protesting, who have been harmed and
29:19injured. It shouldn't be happening to you either. But I want to take a second, as Senator Smith was,
29:26just to reflect on the community. St. Paul stands with you, Minneapolis, the East and Metro. We're
29:34united, as well as all Minnesotans. My phones have been ringing off the hook from frustrated members
29:42of communities that are asking me to talk to their Republican members of Congress to do something
29:50about the escalation of chaos and violence that has been caused by the presence of the Department of
29:57Homeland Security. Representative Morrison and I, along with Representative Omar and Craig,
30:05had an opportunity to show with our votes on the House floor just this week, how disappointed we are
30:13that the President refuses to listen. Oh, well, we're more than disappointed. We are outraged.
30:20Part of the bill that was on the floor was to provide more body cameras for ICE.
30:26Well, they have them already in the thousands, and they refuse to wear them. So, Secretary Noem,
30:33have your officers suit up and put on their body cameras just like our law enforcement does.
30:38To our law enforcement here, we appreciate you, especially those of you who have been working
30:43the extra shifts. To the school boards, to the community service volunteers, everybody out there
30:50in this community, you make us so proud to represent you in the United States Congress. We hold our head
30:56up high with how Minnesota is reacting to this. We celebrate 250 years of this United States of America.
31:05America. And I'll close with quoting Benjamin Franklin. He came out of the Constitutional
31:11Convention and he said, it's a republic if you can keep it. Well, we're showing we want to keep it
31:19a
31:19republic with peaceful protesting. Stay calm, be safe, take care of one another. And when you see a
31:27National Guards person out there trying to relieve one of our police officers, know that they're there to
31:34protect you. So please, respect everyone out there trying to keep us safe. And with that,
31:41I'd like to welcome up my colleague from the West Metro. Representative Morrison.
31:48Thank you, Representative McCollum. You know, the day after tens of thousands of Minnesotans showed the
31:54world how to stand up peacefully against this administration's cruelty, lawlessness and unacceptable
32:01occupation and demand that ICE leave our state and end this federal invasion. The world is watching yet
32:10again as one of Donald Trump's federal agents have shot and killed another United States citizen
32:16in broad daylight in the middle of the street. First, we lost Renee Nicole Good and now Alex Jeffrey
32:26Preddy. A 37 year old man, a Minnesotan, an ICU nurse, a resident looking out for his neighbors as
32:35Minnesotans always do. And I do want to pause and offer my deepest sympathy and profound condolences to
32:44Mr. Preddy's family and friends. I am so sorry for your unimaginable loss. And we are once again now
32:52being asked to deny what we saw with our own eyes. We watched the videos of a masked federal agent
33:01shooting Alex in the back multiple times while he was pinned down by more than six other masked
33:08federal agents. And once again, DHS has come out with a predetermined narrative that contradicts
33:14everything we saw with our own eyes. Two 37 year old Minnesotans are now dead, a poet and a nurse.
33:23For what? We cannot lose any more lives. We need a full transparent and comprehensive investigation
33:32led by our BCA. And ICE and Border Patrol need to halt all operations in the state and leave immediately.
33:41And Congress cannot be complicit in facilitating these lethal operations and federal occupation of
33:48our cities. We are standing. We've been listening to a briefing from local Minnesota lawmakers and law
33:55enforcement about their efforts to keep the peace in Minneapolis after a fatal shooting of a resident
34:02by federal forces conducting immigration enforcement operations. While this was happening, Homeland Security
34:10Secretary Kristi Noem held her own briefing on the incident in Washington. Let's take a listen to some of that.
34:18It occurred with DHS law enforcement as they carried out their lawful duties to keep Americans safe in the
34:26threat of criminal illegal aliens in this country. At 9.05 a.m. Central Time, the Department of Homeland
34:33Security law enforcement officials and officers were conducting targeted operations in Minneapolis
34:38against an illegal alien whose criminal history included domestic assault with intentionally inflicting
34:45bodily harm, disorderly conduct, and driving without a valid license. An individual approached US Border
34:53Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. The officers attempted to disarm this individual,
34:59but the armed suspect reacted violently. Fearing for his life and for the lives of his fellow officers
35:06around him, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics were on the scene immediately and attempted to deliver
35:12medical aid to the subject, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect also had two magazines
35:19with ammunition in them that held dozens of rounds. He also had no ID. This looks like a situation where
35:25an individual arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement.
35:32About hundreds of protesters then showed up at the scene. They began to obstruct and to assault law
35:39enforcement officers. We saw objects being thrown at them, including ice and other objects, and a rampant
35:46assault began and even an HSI officer agent's finger was bitten off. Crowd control measures were deployed
35:54to bring safety to the public and to law enforcement at the scene. And once again, I want to remind
35:59everybody
36:00that this situation and this tragedy did not have to happen. Our law enforcement are doing everything that
36:06they can to protect the public. We're praying for this deceased loved one's family and friends,
36:11but we also recognize that the Minnesota governor and the Minneapolis mayor need to take a long hard
36:17look in the mirror. They need to evaluate their rhetoric, their conversations, and their encouragement of
36:23such violence against our citizens and our law enforcement officers. I'll remind you that Governor
36:29Walz today in his press conference said that our officers were not even law enforcement, which is a lie.
36:34He's called them the Gestapo. He's encouraged residents and citizens and violent rioters to resist.
36:42He's doxed their identities, putting themselves and their families lives in jeopardy. He's refused to
36:48turn over murders to federal law enforcement officers. He's protected illegal criminals and protected them
36:54from being brought to justice and even overseeing... Let's go back to the presser in Minnesota
37:00that is still ongoing. And to remember these little kids who are afraid to go to school and to remember
37:07the people who are legal citizens, who are wrestled to the ground yelling, I am born here. I was born
37:16here.
37:17And to remember these two that we've lost. And I hope that's something that they all take home and
37:23that the people of this country do as they look at how they can get this administration to stop this.
37:29Mayor Frey, can you talk about the legal case that you were pursuing and how this shooting changes your
37:35strategy? What is your best case scenario on Monday when you were born?
37:40Yeah. So there's two forms of requests that we have been asking for. The first was this temporary
37:49restraining order. The other possibility is some form of injunctive relief. Now, I don't want to get too
37:56into the details because I'm bound to get something wrong. But the question is one of urgency and immediacy.
38:03The issue is that we recently saw somebody shot and badly injured. We then saw somebody shot
38:10and killed. And that was the second one. Chief, I think we've only had three homicides in the city
38:18this year. Is that right? Two of them ice. Three homicides. Two of them were from ice.
38:27And so the relief that we're asking for is stopping this operation Metro surge in the immediacy.
38:35It's preventing this massive influx of agents that is making it very difficult for us to do our jobs
38:42in the city as well as we need to do them. And we need to do regular day law enforcement
38:46as well.
38:46Yes. They defied a search warrant this morning. Do you think they'll abide by a court order from a
38:50federal judge? They have to abide. So the question is they defied a search warrant this morning.
38:56Will they abide by a court order by a federal judge? Everybody listen to that question.
39:05The question is, will this administration abide by a court order?
39:11These are the underpinnings of our democracy, of our republic and of this constitution.
39:17The answer better be yes. Whether you're a Democrat or you're Republican,
39:22you abide by those court orders. The answer has to be yes, if you are a patriot for this country.
39:30And so, yes, my expectation is that they will abide by the court order because there is not an alternative.
39:37If I could just ask you and also Senator Klobuchar and the other legislators. The rhetoric today
39:45seems back to where it was in the aftermath of Renee Good, if not even higher.
39:51Senator Klobuchar posted on ex-Steven Miller, then the present day slammed Senator Klobuchar's post.
39:58And this is going on the vitriol on social media. Is there any way or how are you going to
40:06come
40:06together? Is there a way to approach the other side?
40:09Yeah.
40:11I'll answer for myself and from the city's perspective and certainly turn it to Senator
40:18Klobuchar. I want everyone to just quickly look at the juxtaposition
40:24between the way that Minneapolis is showing up and the way that the federal government is showing up.
40:30I want you to look at the difference between the elected leaders and our chief that you've heard
40:35talk just before me. They're calling for peace. They're calling for peace, notwithstanding this
40:43horrific action from the federal government. What are they doing? They're not investigating
40:49the person that killed our citizens. They're investigating us.
40:56This is political retaliation. This is about a political narrative. And that narrative
41:01is making people less safe.
41:07A number of us has been.
41:08I want to explain that we came out of the Kristi Noam presser because many of her claims were
41:16inaccurate. Let's get some reaction from Minnesota State Senate President Bobby Champion
41:22and Minnesota State Representative Caleb Berg, both Democrats.
41:27The metropolitan area, Chief O'Hara was...
41:30Senator?
41:31Well, yes. Well, Reverend Sharpton, thank you. Thank you for also giving us the opportunity to
41:37see the false narrative as articulated by Kristi Noam. It's false. We have seen a number of times where
41:43they've come out and tried to create this false narrative in order to be a protectionist.
41:49We've also are very clear that they don't want the truth. You know, the truth means that you want
41:55to look at the evidence and you want the evidence to lead us in the direction that one should go.
42:01What they do is that they come up with a narrative and then they want everyone to buy into that
42:06narrative.
42:07First of all, when she talks about the suspect and interfering with their duties, I haven't
42:14seen that on any videotape. I've seen the aggressive action of ICE and that a person who was exercising
42:22their constitutional right to observe is taping them and doing all those things. Then I've seen ICE
42:31also pushing people to the ground and hurting them. And then the young man, unfortunately,
42:36whose life was taken was on the ground. And then we heard the shots and he kept shooting. They didn't
42:43shoot once or twice. It was at least three or four times. But this has been the practice of ICE,
42:51unfortunately, that they've been here aggressive with citizens and with children and with seniors,
42:57you name it. So we have also the president who's not interested in the truth. And I really wish they
43:04were interested in the truth because we are interested in the truth. And the last thing that I'll say
43:09is this. Number one, every elected official, including our governor, the mayor of Minneapolis,
43:18the mayor of St. Paul, our other congressional team has always talked about calm and allowing ICE to do
43:25their work. But yet we have a constitutional right to make sure that they are doing it correctly by
43:32observing them and making sure that our citizens are protected. What has happened is ICE has been the
43:39one very aggressive and being unseemly. And let me just say, Reverend Sharpton, that we've seen this
43:48before now and historically, that sometimes law enforcement, and not law enforcement as we know it,
43:55ICE in particular, has been abusive, for lack of a better word.
44:02All right. We're out of time. But Representative Berg, quickly give me your response to what you've heard.
44:08Thank you, Reverend. It's like a tale of two press conferences. The one with our Minneapolis
44:14leaders and our congressional delegation full of humanity calling for peaceful protest, keeping each
44:21other safe. The other asking us to disbelieve what we have seen with our own eyes. Enough is enough.
44:27Minnesota can investigate what happens in Minnesota. ICE needs to leave now and our communities need to
44:34become safe once again. All right. Thank you to Minnesota State Senate President Bobby Champion and
44:41Minnesota State Representative Kayla Berg. Thank you both for being with us. Let's take a break and we'll be
44:51right back. What do you think the end game is?
44:56Welcome back to MS Now. We are continuing to follow breaking news out of Minneapolis where 37 year old
45:04was shot and killed by federal agents earlier today. Joining me with reaction is Jake Traylor, MS Now White
45:13House reporter. Jake, what has been President Trump's reaction to today's development?
45:19Yeah, Reverend. It has been a really striking remarks from President Trump in the just short aftermath of
45:26this tragic killing that took place in Minneapolis. The president in part essentially has said that he's
45:32putting the blame on on local and state officials in Minneapolis. He has said that the governor and
45:37the mayor are inciting insurrection in the state of Minneapolis. That's of course incredibly notable
45:43because the president has long over the past few weeks and months threatened the usage of the
45:48Insurrection Act if necessary. I want to read in part some of that true social post where the president said
45:52that much of what you're witnessing is a cover-up for this theft and fraud. He goes on to say
45:57that
45:57the mayor and the governor are inciting insurrection with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric.
46:03The president has for a while now floated the idea of using the Insurrection Act, saying that there's
46:09a certain trigger, a certain point where he would ultimately utilize that. Kristi Noem just moments ago
46:14in her press conference was asked by MS Now about if this is that trigger, if this is far enough
46:21to
46:21utilize the Insurrection Act. She said in part that the president will use every tool that he
46:24needs to follow through on his promises to the American people, but was not specific about this
46:29being that further enough amount to go there. I also will note too, Reverend, that Stephen Miller,
46:36the deputy chief of staff, has really used strong language in the immediate moments after this tragic
46:42shooting, saying that the individual, the 37-year-old individual that was killed was a domestic terrorist,
46:47not providing evidence around that. So we're really seeing a coordinated effort that is taking place
46:52from all senior White House staffers, including Vance, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and of course,
46:57the president himself. All right. Thank you to Jake Traylor at the White House. Joining us now is
47:04Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter, vice chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Congressman,
47:11what are your thoughts on today's fatal shooting in Minnesota?
47:17What we're seeing, Reverend Sharpton, is failure at a proportion. A presidency and a secretary to
47:27homeland security is completely out of control. When you see armed thugs and, yeah, attacking a citizen
47:36weapon, hit him to the ground. I mean, every camera angle shows this individual holding up his phone.
47:47And then he wrestled to the ground and shot. There was no indication that another fire in play. There
47:56was no indication that this individual was even responding actively. He was holding,
48:04simply to help the lady who was being pepper sprayed. And they appeared to not like that. Listen,
48:11evidence will have to be predetermined exactly what happened. The thing is for certain.
48:17And we're not going to be comfortable with very ICE agents who committed this entrenched crime to be the
48:25one to also investigate it. There has to be independent investigation done by local authorities.
48:33As I've said all along, in order for, to work for ICE agents or CBA, whoever comes into the community,
48:41they must work with local agents. If you really want to help, it's still not appear that the ICE
48:48agents that are in Minneapolis are there to help. They're there to incite.
48:53And to use a football now, it appears that the role is to try to do off sides, so they
49:01can then act out in a violent way.
49:04The message has to be, we have to be smarter than they are. We have to ensure that we once
49:11again
49:11assume the power of Congress. And I call my colleagues, both in the Senate, to recognize that it's not about
49:19Republicans or Democrats. This is about our Constitution.
49:22The law. This is about a governance that is of control in America.
49:30Let me break in. We're having sound problems with you, but thank you. Let me take a break here.
49:39That does it for me. Thanks for watching. I'll see you back here tomorrow at 5 p.m. Eastern.
49:44The weekend primetime starts right here on MS Now at the top of the hour.
