00:02The waters behind me here at Geordie Bay are very quiet with the Rottnest Island community
00:07and visitors here still in shock after yesterday's tragedy.
00:11It's just the second fatal shark attack here at Rottnest Island and the last one was almost
00:1615 years ago so not the news anyone expects to hear when they're spending time here at
00:21Rottnest.
00:22The man was attacked about a kilometre offshore at Horseshoe Reef and while some are now understandably
00:29apprehensive about going in the water we have spoken to some other people who say they won't
00:34be letting yesterday's tragedy deter them from going in.
00:38I'll definitely go in the water absolutely yeah I mean you get we go every time you go
00:43in the water there's going to be some form of sea animal or shark or you know you're just
00:48kind of wary of where you'd go and what kind of thing but no it won't it won't stop me
00:53there's
00:53a lot of other things that you know I could do where there's dangers and risks and stuff
00:58that um yeah you're talking to the wrong person because I'll do it anyway so.
01:04Blake the 38 year old man had been spear fishing with friends yesterday when tragedy struck?
01:12Yeah so police say this was a man who had experience with spear fishing and he was with a group
01:18of
01:18three friends on Saturday morning who witnessed the horrific attack. Now the victim was on the
01:24surface of the water and about 20 meters from his boat when he was bitten on the lower legs. He
01:30was
01:30brought to shore here and paramedics and police attempted to perform CPR but they were unable to
01:36save him as horrified tourists watched on leaving the Rottnest Island community here in shock.
