00:02Chaos turning to horror at one of WA's most idyllic holiday spots.
00:07On the jetty at Rottnest Island's Geordie Bay, police and paramedics performed CPR on the 38-year-old man.
00:14The man and a friend had been diving at Horseshoe Reef, about a kilometre off the island's western end.
00:20But just before 10am, one of the divers was attacked by a 4-metre white shark.
00:25There was people that were out spearfishing and there was witnesses on board the vessel.
00:29The victim was on the surface at the time, about 20 metres away from the vessel.
00:32He was bitten on the lower legs.
00:34After raising the alarm, the 38-year-old was raced back in a small cabin cruiser to nearby Geordie Bay.
00:40Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man could not be saved.
00:45All the while, stunned tourists were left to watch on.
00:48Yeah, real confronting. I think everyone was just on looking like, sort of hoping that he was okay and whatnot.
00:53But obviously it didn't look too good in the end, which was a bit unfortunate.
00:58Obviously it's a bit of a sad day. No-one really wants to see that on the island.
01:04Everyone's sort of just coming to sort of enjoy the beaches and the ocean.
01:07And yeah, a bit of a sad one.
01:10Horseshoe Reef is a popular spot for diving and fishing.
01:13About 10 metres deep, it's also the site of a shipwreck.
01:16The victim and his friend had spear-fishing gear on board and had been diving in near-perfect conditions.
01:23Came in, he looked like he was in a bit of distress, sort of maybe a bit of shock from
01:28the incident.
01:30This is the second fatal shark attack at Rottnest Island.
01:33In October 2011, 32-year-old scuba diver George Wainwright was killed by a shark,
01:39while scuba diving with two friends at Little Armstrong Bay, about five kilometres from the latest attack.
