00:02Lester Mendoza is feeling the cold, but he's embracing an opportunity to work in regional
00:07South Australia.
00:08We don't have winter in the Philippines, it's always hot and humid there.
00:13After seeing an ad for trainee nurses online, Mr Mendoza decided to apply.
00:18I like the town, especially the people living in the town, yeah.
00:21They're very supportive, especially the mayor and the PT mayor, and the community is really
00:26great.
00:26He's one of five nurses recruited at Cleve Hospital through a pilot migration program
00:31based on semi-skilled occupational recognition.
00:34And after completing TAFE training, he'll qualify as an enrolled nurse.
00:38It's a long-term solution for a shortage of healthcare workers.
00:42Have boots on the ground is absolutely fantastic, it's best outcome ever and great for our small
00:51community of Cleve.
00:53The project has been three years in the making.
00:55Through this program, we've worked through all the opportunities around identifying
01:01nursing talent in the Philippines, so individuals that wouldn't normally have a pathway into
01:07enrolled nursing or registered nursing here in Australia.
01:10If I'm given a chance, then I will stay here permanently, so we'll see how it goes here.
01:15I really like the place, I really love the people.
01:17A chance for a new life supporting regional SA.
01:21Hey.
01:21Wait.
01:21That's great.
01:22That's great.
