How Dawid Augustyn revitalized this 1970s building in Cape Town. Thanks to Dawid, it now has a fresh, new look. Think color, curves and a whole new exciting take on African modern interior design.

00:00Across Africa, incredible homes are raising the bar of modern design.
00:05This series gives you a front row seat to unapologetically stylish spaces,
00:09the kind you can't help but save, screenshot and dream about.
00:19We're in Cape Town and today Pelesa Tembe is visiting an apartment that's packed with
00:24personality and playfulness. This spot is made for dinner parties,
00:28late nights and insta-worthy moments. But part twist, this building is old. Built in the 1970s,
00:35it's had a glow up thanks to designer David Augustan. Same structure, brand new attitude.
00:42Hello, how are you David? How are you? Good to see you again.
00:45I cannot wait to see what you've got in store for us. Yes, welcome and we have a wonderful apartment.
00:52It used to be a large apartment that we have turned into actually a one-bedroom apartment. It's a very
00:59old concrete column and beam structure building and we wanted to soften with finesse throughout the
01:07apartment. And as you arrive in the arrival hall, we've created this focal point which sort of has a
01:13starting spine that takes you through the rest of the building and softens around all the columns.
01:20You know, David, something else that caught my attention is this beautiful kitchen. Not only
01:24did you make use of my favourite kind of being pink, but it's quite an unusual choice for a kitchen.
01:30Not only your favourite colour, but also my client's favourite colour. And we really wanted to create a
01:36little jewellery box for her when you arrive into the apartment. The kitchen totally gives off jewellery
01:43box vibes. Curves everywhere, pink done right, marble and stone breaking it up with brass details
01:49that nail that old meets new feel. The kind of place dinner guests won't be able to stop talking about.
01:57This whole space feels like an art gallery. Art is a very big part of our client's
02:03collection here. And we had to create opportunity in the space for art walls. And as you can see
02:11through the apartment in all the spaces, we've created very big pockets where we could have
02:16collection of art on the walls. So as you can see, we are now transitioning into a new space. Even
02:24though
02:24we decided to have one big open space, we divided it into little pockets. And I think this is the
02:30magic
02:31where everything happens when you arrive in the space. And then the magic reveals the ocean.
02:37The amazing views of the ocean and the fact that we've been able to convert the old balcony
02:43into now an indoor space and yet again create some space where we could hang art and interesting pieces.
02:50We were also clever by creating this division between what you can't see now, but is the main bedroom.
02:58And cleverly positioned in here is a laundry facility, a little hidden door where you go through,
03:04as if it doesn't exist, into another piece of magic in the apartment.
03:09And David is right. Behind this door, another little secret is waiting.
03:19Oh, wow. David, I love this emerald green moment.
03:24Yes, again, this is a new space, a surprise. Like most of the moments that you have through the
03:31apartment, there's these pockets of surprises and we wanted to create this den or library space and study
03:38space. It definitely does feel like a cocoon. When it does come to some of the design elements you've
03:45been able to bring into this library slash TV room, what were those?
03:49So we wanted this space to feel slightly darker, a little bit more moody, and that's why we've used
03:54the very dark greens on the walls. We wanted the ceiling to really be present in this room and
04:01that's why we've used such a bold pink colour. Again, a favourite colour of yourself.
04:06And David is right. Behind this door, another little secret is waiting.
04:15Now, this is clearly the main bedroom, but also the only bedroom.
04:19Correct. Yes. And that was very much part of the brief. And for me, this space is where you come
04:25and calm down. Contrast to the rest of the apartment. This is a very quiet, very subtle, very gentle space.
04:34It's a space that has very few pieces of art, very few pieces of furniture, and it's really just a
04:40calming space.
04:41And for me, that's exactly what a bedroom should be.
04:46Walk through the wardrobe and suddenly it's a whole new mood. Classic tiles, vintage flair, and a bathroom
04:53that basically says, bubble bath, phone on silent, see you later. And for someone who's been inspired by what
05:00you've been able to create here, what advice do you have for them?
05:03I think what's important is that you should embrace what you love. Surround yourself with pieces and
05:09things that really makes you happy. And that's exactly what this home does.
05:14More than a place to live, it's made for hanging out and living life loud.
