Organic farming is widespread in Europe. But it’s still rare on an industrial scale. A Slovenian company farms over 3,000 hectares in Serbia. Does that work?

00:02Many people are not aware that our food system is actually creating the biggest threat to our own existence.
00:11So how we grow food is the most important thing for the future of humanity in the world.
00:20Samo Login says this is his contribution to saving the world.
00:25That's what drives him.
00:26And so the successful Slovenian software entrepreneur became an organic farmer.
00:32And he didn't do it in half measures.
00:37I figured out that only a couple of millions will not be enough.
00:41I came up with a plan how to in seven years create a company that will earn all the initial
00:49funders.
00:50Our initial goal was 100 million euros.
00:52But we sold it almost to the day in seven years for one billion dollars.
00:59Enough money to invest on a large scale.
01:02Eight years ago, Login bought around 3,700 hectares of farmland in northern Serbia.
01:09This makes Login Echol one of the largest fully certified organic farms in Europe.
01:15No synthetic fertilizers.
01:17No pesticides.
01:19No herbicides.
01:20Instead, a high degree of mechanization.
01:24Login Echol's fleet of machinery is extensive.
01:28In organic operation, you have to be a little bit oversized in mechanization because we do not use any silver
01:37bullets.
01:37There is no synthetic pesticides.
01:40There are no herbicides that we are using.
01:44Mechanical weed control.
01:45Guided by GPS, the tractors follow their paths with centimeter level precision.
01:51Human labor is hardly needed anymore.
01:56But organic farming is even more important than mechanical farming.
02:01Login Echol employs an entire team of agricultural scientists.
02:05They are constantly researching ways to improve production.
02:09The most important factor, the correct rotation of grains and legumes.
02:16We rely heavily on crop rotation, on complex five-year crop rotation.
02:22In combination of peas, oats, chickpeas, flax and sunflower, we manage to keep our fields clear.
02:34All the information is fed into software developed in-house by Login Echol.
02:39It serves as the backbone of the entire production process.
02:43When they started, there was no software available that could fully support organic farming on this scale.
02:49Data I recorded today regarding weeds are going to be uploaded immediately in our big data.
03:00And later on, we can use it for making informed decisions.
03:05And they need it because climate change is causing them more and more problems.
03:10They now grow soybeans only for research purposes.
03:14In recent years, it has simply been too hot and dry.
03:17We use many automatic weather stations to measure weather on our very fields.
03:27And we can document huge changes in air temperatures, in rainfalls.
03:37So we see, we measure climate changes.
03:41Every data collected here is automatically uploaded to our farming software.
03:47The software supports daily work planning, helps determine what, when and where to plant, and enables full production tracking.
03:55Anyone can see online what is happening in each field.
03:59Transparency is important to Login, and as he says, it is increasingly a selling point for Login Echol's products.
04:05The goal is for the software to benefit as many farmers as possible in the future.
04:11We want to share all the technology for free.
04:15Because we know that the classical capitalist approach would be, I want to conquer the world with my product.
04:26I don't think there is time.
04:28So we went for a strategy that is exactly the opposite.
04:33Let's offer it for free to everybody to use and in this way maximize the impact.
04:40Login Echol dedicates 490 hectares, about 13% of its total area, to so-called biodiversity zones.
04:49These areas are left in their natural state.
04:51That's nearly twice the amount required for organic farming.
04:55But Login does many things a little differently.
04:58And on a much larger scale.
05:00Login Echol inまり merrimom.
05:00Login Echol tissue, perfect.
05:00Login Echol inside.
05:01Login is automatically fallen.
05:02Login Echoligos.
05:03Login Echol is more evident.
