00:08Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're ranking every major entry in the Legend of Zelda series.
00:20Before we begin, we publish new content all week long.
00:24So, be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:29Number 17. Zelda II The Adventure of Link
00:38The second game in the franchise, Zelda II The Adventure of Link was a marked departure from its predecessor, featuring
00:44RPG elements as well as side-scrolling sections.
00:47These new play styles didn't always gel well, and created some abrupt difficulty spikes.
00:51However, despite being something of an odd duck in the series, Zelda II still introduced many elements that would become
00:57series staples, such as the magic meter and more interaction with NPCs.
01:02It's not necessarily a bad game, but when compared with the rest of the Zelda games, The Adventure of Link
01:07can come across like its most infamous NPC.
01:14Number 16. The Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks
01:17The second Zelda game on the DS, and a follow-up to another game we'll be talking about later, Spirit
01:28Tracks features some divisive elements.
01:30On the one hand, controlling Link and his phantom companion feels fluid and natural, and can lead to some fun
01:36puzzles.
01:37On the other hand, the overworld being literally on rails proved unpopular with many.
01:42Also, the necessity of blowing into the DS microphone to accomplish certain tasks meant that playing with ambient noise nearby
01:48could make things more difficult.
01:49So, while the art style and gameplay are bright and fun, Spirit Tracks is held back from being as good
01:55as it could have been by some design decisions.
02:05Number 15. The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass
02:15Set prior to Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass features a similar control scheme and art style.
02:20However, its world is a more open one, which you traverse via Steamboat.
02:24It also features a multiplayer option, unlike most mainline Zelda titles.
02:28Similar to its successor, Phantom Hourglass also had its share of divisive elements, particularly its stealth sections and the requirement
02:35of returning to the same temple multiple times,
02:37which some people found repetitive.
02:40Even so, Phantom Hourglass feels like a novel experience, unlike most other Zelda games, that's well worth playing.
02:51Number 14. The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages
03:00We usually restrict our entries to one game, but anyone who's played these games know they belong together.
03:06Created specifically to be played together, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages see Link engaging in traditional top-down
03:12Zelda gameplay,
03:13with the former allowing him to change the environment between the four seasons and the latter between the past and
03:18the present.
03:19They have some other differences too, with Ages emphasizing puzzle solving, while Seasons is more action-oriented.
03:25There's also a level of connectivity between the two, as owning both games allows for further progression in the other.
03:30Both are solid Zelda titles, though not quite as influential as others.
03:35The Boxing Kangaroo is pretty neat though.
03:43Number 13. The Legend of Zelda
03:49The Legend of Zelda for the NES was a great leap forward for games of the time.
03:55Players were dropped into a wide open world to explore, fighting monsters and exploring dungeons across various regions.
04:02Also, for the first time in any console game, you could save your progress and then continue where you left
04:07off.
04:08Talk about revolutionary.
04:10There's really not much wrong or divisive about the original game, but since it's the foundation that everything else built
04:15upon,
04:16it doesn't quite reach the heights later entries would achieve.
04:25Number 12. The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom
04:38In her first starring role, at least in the mainline series, Zelda must uncover the mystery of rifts appearing across
04:44Hyrule.
04:44Alongside her is Tri, a creature who gives her the ability to create copies of various objects and enemies.
04:50Through the variety in what you can replicate, Echoes of Wisdom gives you plenty of tools to work with when
04:55solving its puzzles and fighting enemies.
04:57It doesn't match the scope or depth of the 3D games, but its dungeons are still incredibly fun,
05:02and they were a welcome return following the less traditional ones in the open world games.
05:16Number 11. The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
05:23Chronologically the first game in the Zelda timeline, Skyward Sword took players to an airborne world before Hyrule.
05:29Although the gorgeous orchestrated soundtrack, creative world, engaging characters, and story were all enjoyed as much as any other game
05:36in the series,
05:36the controls have proven divisive.
05:38Skyward Sword utilized full motion controls for much of the actions Link performs, and not everyone enjoys playing with them.
05:44If they bother you, Skyward Sword may not be your favorite.
05:48Still, whether you like it or not, it's an important and entertaining Zelda game overall.
05:58Number 10. The Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap
06:05This Game Boy Advance entry in the series feels like something of a transitional game.
06:10For one thing, it has gameplay and features in common with both 2D and 3D Zelda games, such as the
06:15overhead perspective of the former,
06:16and the weapons being keyed to specific buttons of the latter.
06:20The Minish Cap's most distinguishing claim to fame is its titular hat, which Link can use to shrink down to
06:24a smaller size.
06:25This leads to a lot of fun dungeons and interactions with enemies.
06:29Although it's fairly short when compared to others in the series, it's still great for its size.
06:38Number 9. The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds
06:46Despite being on the 3DS, A Link Between Worlds features a strong 2D element to its gameplay.
06:51Link gains the ability in this game to become a 2D painting that can move on walls, opening up a
06:56lot of cool puzzle possibilities.
06:58A spiritual successor of sorts to A Link to the Past, it also features a dark version of Hyrule, called
07:04Low Rule, which makes for an intriguing twist.
07:06Both a return to form and introducing plenty of new mechanics, A Link Between Worlds is a strong entry in
07:12the franchise, but it has some stiff competition ahead.
07:20Number 8. The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
07:31It's hard to follow up on such a marvelous achievement like Breath of the Wild.
07:34And, yes, Tears of the Kingdom does have a few notable flaws, like the vast emptiness for much of the
07:39depths and some questionable lore.
07:41Still, it has an astounding level of creativity.
07:44Link's new bag of tricks, Ascend, Recall, and Ultra Hand in particular, make interacting with Hyrule an absolute joy.
07:51From a gameplay standpoint alone, there's so much here that can soak up hours of your free time.
07:55Then there's the music, the incredible art direction, and the charm packed into every corner that showcases Nintendo's pristine craftsmanship.
08:08Number 7. The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening
08:18The first handheld Zelda game is actually a departure from the usual experience.
08:22Link washes up on a strange island and must discover its strange secrets to escape.
08:26While not as large as some other Zelda games, Link's Awakening uses every bit of its island setting
08:31to create a charming and memorable experience.
08:34It's proven popular enough to receive multiple remakes,
08:36with the recent version of the Switch featuring a major graphical upgrade and a dungeon editor.
08:41So whether you're playing it on the Switch, the Game Boy, or Link's Awakening DX on the Game Boy Color,
08:45it's a dream of a Zelda title we never want to wake up from.
08:54Number 6. The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
09:01Created at the tail end of the GameCube era and the beginning of the Wii's,
09:05Twilight Princess was released for both consoles.
09:07The game saw Link fighting an invasion of creatures from the sinister Twilight Realm
09:11and gaining the ability to turn into a wolf.
09:14You're also joined by Midna, who is easily one of the series' best companion characters.
09:18While some considered to be somewhat middle of the road and lacking in the innovation of other 3D Zelda games,
09:24Twilight Princess nevertheless has some exceptional dungeons and a memorable aesthetic.
09:28It may be grim, but it shines in our book.
09:34Number 5. The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
09:42When discussing influential Zelda games, A Link to the Past is right up there.
09:47This Super Nintendo game introduced elements that would become series' trademarks,
09:50including the Master Sword, the Hookshot, and multiple versions of the same world.
09:54Its gameplay set the standard for top-down Zelda games, and its music is iconic.
09:59The game has also been re-released a number of times,
10:01on one occasion with a multiplayer game based on it called Four Swords.
10:05However, despite frequently being cited as one of the greatest games ever made,
10:09A Link to the Past is up against other Zelda games,
10:12so it's not the only one that can claim that honor.
10:19Number 4. The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker
10:28Set in an oceanic world of small islands, Wind Waker is a cartoony and colorful Zelda game
10:33where adventure is just over the horizon.
10:35While fans balked at the art style initially, it has aged like fine wine,
10:40especially with its HD re-release, which made it look even more gorgeous
10:43and fixed some of its pacing issues.
10:46For as much as people focus on its aesthetics, Wind Waker also has excellent gameplay,
10:50featuring a simple but fun counter-system in combat
10:53and the ability to control characters besides Link in certain dungeons.
10:56Add in the series' signature spectacular music and some wonderful comedic moments,
11:00and you've got a course for one of the most fun Zelda games ever made.
11:12Number 3. The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
11:18This is my favorite Zelda game.
11:21Imagine if Twin Peaks and Groundhog Day got crossed with Zelda,
11:24and you'll have something close to Majora's Mask.
11:26After traveling to a strange world similar to Hyrule,
11:29Link must stop the titular evil mask from causing the moon to crash into the world
11:33by repeating the same three days.
11:35Although its dark and tragic atmosphere won't appeal to everyone,
11:38those who love it adore this game, yes I do.
11:41Full of numerous engaging side quests,
11:43masks that give you special abilities and transformations,
11:46and a ton of melancholy music,
11:48Majora's Mask can be an acquired taste,
11:50but it's one worth experiencing in the original or 3DS remake.
11:54Besides, what other Zelda game asks you to protect cows from aliens with a bow and arrow?
12:04Number 2. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
12:12Breath of the Wild recontextualized the Zelda formula,
12:15and did so in a way that completely blew us away.
12:17A massive open world experience,
12:19there's something around every corner with new things to do or discover,
12:23even after a hundred hours spent on the game.
12:26The climbing and gliding mechanics bring a new level of mobility and fun to traveling and exploring.
12:31Also, it's just fun to play around with the game's physics.
12:34Although the shake-up to the Zelda formula wasn't universally well received,
12:38with the breakable weapons and somewhat lackluster dungeons being common gripes,
12:41those are a small price to pay when there's so much content to enjoy.
12:50Number 1. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
12:59You knew it was coming, you just had to.
13:01Ocarina of Time was Zelda's first 3D game,
13:04but it did everything so well that essentially every game that followed until Breath of the Wild
13:09was built on it to some degree.
13:11It's also the game that the whole Zelda timeline revolves around.
13:14Ocarina of Time has everything you could want.
13:17A fantastic story,
13:18a vivid world to adventure in,
13:20epic music,
13:21fun gameplay,
13:21and so much more.
13:23It also revolutionized gaming with innovations like its targeting system.
13:26What few flaws it does have were ironed out in the 3DS remake.
13:30All in all,
13:31even if it isn't your favorite,
13:32you have to acknowledge its impact,
13:34and it's easy to see why fans rate it among the best ever made.
13:43Where did your favorite game land in the ranking?
13:45Which ones do you think should be lower or higher?
13:48Share your thoughts in the comments.
13:49We'll see you sometime soon.
13:50You can see it in the 4DS.
13:53In the 20s.
13:53Give me the video of these.
