00:00:28There might have been
00:00:28something like nine hours of play lost on the first two days of this final test match at Headingley but
00:00:33my word the players made up for it once they got onto the field. Lots of excitement in the highlights
00:00:38tonight. Welcome to them and we can tell you now how things turned out once Vivian Richards and Ian Botham
00:00:45went out to toss today. The two teams after Richards had won the toss and put England into bat were
00:00:52announced as the West Indies on the right hand side there. The difference there is Lloyd is gone.
00:00:59Still out injured and Collis King is in. They're playing their four fast bowlers plus Collis King a medium pacer
00:01:05and England quite predictably left out Graham Stevenson. They're the two teams and the strip on which they're going to
00:01:13play this final test match is there in front of you.
00:01:17No grass. How one can get that much grass off a pitch will remain one of the mysteries of the
00:01:23summer. Really is scored there and very very brown. It looked to me as though it would spin and it
00:01:32would also provide some movement off the seam.
00:01:35And it reminded me also just a little bit, just a fraction of that 1972 pitch here where after similar
00:01:42weather, lots of rain, the strip was struck by that dreaded userium. We pick up play now in the first
00:01:48over. There's no score and it's Michael Holding coming in. Graham Gooch is taking strike and Jim Laker is in
00:01:55the commentary box.
00:02:01There's no score and it's a little bit.
00:02:04There's no score and it looks like it's a little bit.
00:02:05One score for him.
00:02:15One score for him.
00:02:25and just pulled that head and everything away in the nick of time.
00:03:04So, Geoffrey Boycott have been a pretty tough time with it out there at the moment.
00:03:17And he's gone, he's gone to slip.
00:03:20So he was softened up there and then the full-length ball.
00:03:24Boycott, lug in the drive, never in position.
00:03:27And the breakthrough for West Indies, disposing of boycott for four
00:03:30to a catch by Kelly Turan at first slip with hole in the bowler.
00:03:34Keep going down with just nine runs on the board.
00:03:50Very comfortable single there, sees Brian Rose away.
00:03:55Only Haynes on the offside, able to prevent any runs in front of the wicket.
00:04:01No change from the football end.
00:04:05Here's Michael Holkin.
00:04:08So that was shot, forced away off the back foot.
00:04:11Haynes giving chase.
00:04:15And that beats him, goes through for the first boundary.
00:04:18Struck very nicely off the meat of the bat.
00:04:20It only just made the boundary here.
00:04:22Further indication of how the rain has slowed down this outfield.
00:04:39Slightly upish there.
00:04:41Straight there from Brian Rose, but it's another single on the board.
00:04:46And quite telling this change already to Joel Garner.
00:04:51Because Michael Holding had caused the damage.
00:04:54He certainly wasn't too tired to go on bowling.
00:04:56But they obviously felt there was a little bit of juice here in this pitch.
00:05:01That the accuracy of big Joel Garner and his height could well make use of
00:05:06before the ball gets any older.
00:05:17He's gone.
00:05:19And that I think we really can put down to the variable bounce.
00:05:23It must have stopped there in the pitch.
00:05:26Gooch was playing just a normal type stroke.
00:05:28And locked it away there behind the square leg umpire to Marshall.
00:05:34The second wicket goes down at 27.
00:05:42Oh, what a good delivery.
00:05:44Kept very, very low.
00:05:50We saw Croft coming in.
00:05:52We'll see that there was no great height for that ball at all.
00:05:55Probably hit about, well, yes, halfway up.
00:05:59Halfway up the stumps.
00:06:00And that a ball where he was playing across the crease.
00:06:09And this way there goes the single.
00:06:22Put him down.
00:06:23Carlos King introduced to the side in place of Clive Lloyd.
00:06:31Put him down. Carlos King introduced to the side in place of Clive Lloyd.
00:06:33King was at fourth slip.
00:06:36And it was certainly his catch, although may have looked as though it was between the two fielders.
00:06:54And looking at that, there's no doubt that ball definitely stopped a little bit.
00:07:00And all the batsmen are very suspicious of this wicket.
00:07:04It doesn't look to me like a very good test wicket.
00:07:16It's a good shot.
00:07:16Gadding's off the mark.
00:07:22Here's Croft.
00:07:26...
00:07:27And he's gone.
00:07:27That, uh, can't be blamed on the pitch.
00:07:29Marshall, again... it's a nice catch.
00:07:31turned very firmly by Gatting
00:07:33got that right off the meat of the bat
00:07:35and it would have been four runs
00:07:37if Marshall hadn't been there
00:07:39to intercept it
00:07:52it's not where he meant it
00:07:54but it is four runs
00:07:59I suspect the system might be
00:08:04that you play anything short
00:08:06and anything that's well up
00:08:08you give it everything
00:08:10and here's a little bit of everything
00:08:12bang
00:08:14over the top of the gully
00:08:18safe again
00:08:22yes I think it's
00:08:24plan C today Tom
00:08:35there's the one Marshall was waiting for
00:08:37but it'd need to be a long way back
00:08:39for that
00:08:42that's Botham's reply
00:08:43and
00:08:44a very enjoyable one too
00:08:46for the good crowd here
00:08:49today
00:08:4914 he is now
00:08:51and up comes the half century for England
00:09:01and just well caught
00:09:07Kadecharan at first slip
00:09:08and hardly a backward glance from Larkins
00:09:11and what a time
00:09:13the West Indians are having
00:09:15so Botham
00:09:17down the far end now
00:09:18have a look at
00:09:19Joel Garner
00:09:21and no doubt on Botham's tactics
00:09:24so distrustful of this pick
00:09:26I think that anything up in his half
00:09:27he's going to
00:09:28fling the bat
00:09:36stayed away
00:09:37stayed away
00:09:37no third man down there
00:09:38and gets another four for it
00:09:52it took a long time there
00:09:54to make up the mind
00:09:54they wanted the single
00:09:57I think Peter Willey is quite pleased
00:09:59to take it
00:10:00it sees him off the mark
00:10:01it sees the end of Garner's over
00:10:04Kraft 9 is 11th over
00:10:08and he's gone
00:10:09oh dear
00:10:10it was a dreadful shot
00:10:12and nothing to do with the pitch there
00:10:14nothing to do with the ball
00:10:15and Peter Willey really
00:10:16only himself to blame
00:10:21wide delivery
00:10:22he thought he might have learned his lesson
00:10:24in the previous over
00:10:30well be a great cheer here
00:10:32for Louis Bairstow
00:10:34David Bairstow
00:10:37his first test match of course
00:10:39here on his home ground
00:10:41and getting an excellent reception
00:10:45as you'd expect of course
00:10:47because David Bairstow
00:10:49a great battler
00:10:51great retriever of lost causes
00:10:53he won't sell himself very cheaply
00:11:01Peter Willey there
00:11:02realising that he should never have gone for that
00:11:04and pulling out of it too late
00:11:06going for it
00:11:06and then trying to pull the bat away
00:11:09clip the bottom of the bat
00:11:11and a simple catch for Murray
00:11:13so England in real trouble now
00:11:1559 for 6
00:11:18and Willey out for 1
00:11:27that's nicely off the mark
00:11:28that's nicely off the mark
00:11:29quite pleased to get one there from Croft
00:11:31just outside Lechstown
00:11:32David Bairstow has made the most of it
00:11:35and chalks up a couple of rounds
00:11:40oh that's a pretty good shot
00:11:45perfect piece of timing there by the England captain
00:11:47waiting for the one pitched up
00:11:49wasn't it it seems with a great deal of power
00:11:52he just lent into it
00:11:54and picked it up so very nicely over extra cover
00:12:00this really is a tremendous shot
00:12:03it's difficult enough to hit spinners over extra cover
00:12:06or mid-off for 6
00:12:07when you can hit Garner like that
00:12:09really tremendous shot
00:12:25well he's got after him again
00:12:27there's nobody down at third man
00:12:28that's 4 rounds too
00:12:32not possibly quite where he intended it
00:12:34but
00:12:36one's got to take a few chances
00:12:37to make anything like a respectable score on this pitch
00:12:40look and hit it square
00:12:41a little late on it
00:12:46well there is a little bit of captaincy there
00:12:49from the sidelines
00:12:51we heard in the Olympics that the boxing referees
00:12:54often told the corners to keep quiet
00:12:56no coaching from the sidelines
00:12:57but that obviously was a signal there
00:12:59from Lloyd to Richards
00:13:00switch ends he said
00:13:06that's 4-2
00:13:07no third man
00:13:12so 4 this time to David Bairstow
00:13:21just fractionally late on this shot
00:13:23but it's sped away at great speed
00:13:28Croft has switched the angle
00:13:30coming around the wicket
00:13:36and all coming alike
00:13:38no mid on
00:13:39and
00:13:39fired backers
00:13:41has given up the chase
00:13:49it wasn't a piece of very good judgment
00:13:52thought it had gone and that slow outfield again
00:13:54it stopped just about an inch short of the line
00:13:56didn't make any difference of course
00:13:57because plenty of time for both of them to run for
00:14:07another fine shot by both of them
00:14:09worked it beautifully off the toes
00:14:11angled in around the wicket
00:14:13and certainly the crowd
00:14:14which is now not a bad one
00:14:16can't complain about the excitement
00:14:18which they've had this afternoon
00:14:19tremendous stuff
00:14:20great stuff indeed
00:14:21and
00:14:22both of them and Bairstow
00:14:23survived three more overs
00:14:25up to the T interval
00:14:26to take that score along
00:14:27to 85
00:14:28for 6
00:14:29both of them 35
00:14:31Bairstow 8
00:14:31they added just four more runs
00:14:33from
00:14:34that last four
00:14:35from the England captain
00:14:36we pick up play now
00:14:37in the first over after T
00:14:39no more runs have been added
00:14:40Marshall's bowling to Bairstow
00:14:42coming in from the Kirkster lane end
00:14:43and with me in the commentary box
00:14:45is Ted Dexter
00:14:50I don't think
00:14:52perhaps we'll need to have a look at the replay
00:14:54I don't think he got
00:14:56his hands on it
00:14:57perhaps the fingertips
00:15:00just brushed it
00:15:04very very difficult one
00:15:05if indeed he did
00:15:09just evaded him
00:15:29might just have moved a little off the scene but not much
00:15:32looked as though both of them were in fact playing down the wrong line
00:15:39behind the wicket Derek Murray doing his leg stretching exercises
00:15:42a la Alan Nott
00:15:57that's a very good stroke
00:15:59the outfield's slow here today
00:16:04I'm going to just take the two runs
00:16:1289 for 6
00:16:23and he's gone this time
00:16:25Vivian Richards
00:16:27has caught him at mid-off
00:16:28missed timing there
00:16:29and Michael Holding takes the seventh wicket
00:16:32for 89
00:16:3537
00:16:36Ian Botham
00:16:38and Holding
00:16:41now has two for 18
00:16:4589 for 7
00:16:46that lofted stroke down the ground
00:16:49in the end proving fatal for Ian Botham
00:16:51just
00:16:52two runs short
00:16:54of his 1500 in test matches
00:17:00Markham Marshall
00:17:01is not on strike
00:17:04he's not on striker
00:17:06and here's Bairstow
00:17:09that outfield is slow
00:17:11but slow as it may be
00:17:13it's still quick enough
00:17:14to produce four runs
00:17:15from the outside edge there
00:17:16for Bairstow
00:17:28you can bring yourself the mark
00:17:30you can bring yourself the mark
00:17:48and once again
00:17:49the ball will beat Richards
00:17:50into the fence
00:17:52up comes the 100
00:17:53for England
00:17:55Vivian Richards
00:17:56having won the toss
00:17:57and put them into bat
00:17:57here at Headingley
00:18:04seven wickets down
00:18:0715 to Bairstow
00:18:09and five now to John Embury
00:18:12Michael Holding now
00:18:26really hasn't been a happy series for Derek Murray
00:18:30very difficult for him
00:18:32against bowling of this pace
00:18:34when it's pushed down the lakeside
00:18:35as frequently as it has been
00:18:36in the series
00:18:38and after all
00:18:39he's not in the first flush of youth
00:18:41he's now 37 years of age
00:18:44and as far as time span is concerned
00:18:47the longest serving test cricketer
00:18:49in the game
00:18:52and it needs a few stretching exercises
00:18:54when you're that age
00:18:55to keep up with the pace
00:18:58of this West Indies fast bowling attack
00:19:18I don't know what would have happened there if he had connected
00:19:22could well have gone all the way to Bradford
00:19:24but it really was a tremendous heave
00:19:31and there it is
00:19:33almost an action replay
00:19:34if anyone missed the first stroke
00:19:36then just have a look at this one
00:19:37and you'll know how it was
00:19:47same ball
00:19:49perhaps not quite the same power there but still four runs
00:19:59four more
00:20:01no fly slip
00:20:02no third man
00:20:06and they're all valuable runs
00:20:2223 to best
00:20:23can scarcely be a more popular 23 runs mate
00:20:30young Yorkshireman
00:20:31making his
00:20:34dispatched debut here
00:21:03he's good
00:21:08that's a good shot there
00:21:09poor all run there
00:21:11and David Bezdo
00:21:14goes on now to 27
00:21:32that's a good shot there
00:21:36it's a good shot there
00:21:36it's a very good over for
00:21:37Berstow and for England
00:21:4331 he is now
00:21:46just stick around John
00:21:49and the accompanying word from
00:21:52Berstow to the man who has the injured nose
00:21:54and the score has raced along now
00:21:58to 116 for seven
00:22:0431 to Berstow
00:22:0637 top score
00:22:07Ian Botham
00:22:12nice look at Berstow
00:22:17and that one hurried off
00:22:18change of pace there
00:22:20only just got the back down in time
00:22:21but
00:22:23fairly racing between the wickets
00:22:26that's two more
00:22:27and the applause there of course
00:22:28for Bezdo
00:22:29who's now top scorer
00:22:30in the single of millions
00:22:38he's played the hook shot
00:22:39quite surprised himself
00:22:40that's another look round
00:22:41to make sure
00:22:45that middle leg
00:22:46it's a brave shot there
00:22:47from John Embry
00:22:48because
00:22:49if you really did get a
00:22:50close up look of that
00:22:52nose of his
00:22:52you'd realise how
00:22:54sore and ugly it looks
00:22:55at the moment
00:23:17and a confident shout
00:23:18and Berstow goes
00:23:20in Palmer
00:23:21no hesitation
00:23:22well David Berstow's been walking in there
00:23:24looking to push it away
00:23:26on the onside
00:23:30and that's
00:23:31the way he was finally
00:23:33dismissed here
00:23:33but a fine brave
00:23:36bold effort this
00:23:37from David Berstow
00:23:3840 out of a total
00:23:39of 131 for eight
00:23:41making him
00:23:41very comfortably
00:23:42England's top scorer to date
00:23:49so 131 for eight
00:23:50Berstow gone for 40
00:23:52and another shot
00:23:54from the
00:23:54Cuppets Lane
00:23:55in camera
00:23:58and looking
00:23:59pretty blunt
00:24:07that's a good shot
00:24:08by Chris Oles
00:24:09stroked away very nicely
00:24:10off the back foot
00:24:11racing away
00:24:12down the pavilion
00:24:13and he's away
00:24:14with a very handsome four
00:24:24beautifully timed
00:24:25stroked this
00:24:26and Chris Oles
00:24:27put right across
00:24:28and beautifully timed
00:24:30through the gully
00:24:31four runs all the way
00:24:46that's out
00:24:48lovely catch
00:24:50straight into the midriff
00:24:51there of Big Joe Garner
00:24:52Chris Oles goes
00:24:53niner out
00:24:54for 140
00:24:55Chris
00:24:57hold out for six
00:24:59so Marshall
00:25:00picking up
00:25:01another wicket
00:25:04not dissimilar
00:25:05to the way
00:25:05in which
00:25:06Graham Gooch
00:25:06went earlier
00:25:07when lurking
00:25:08around behind
00:25:09there
00:25:09it was Big Garner
00:25:10this time
00:25:11made no mistake
00:25:13at all
00:25:14140 for nine
00:25:16Embry remains
00:25:17on 11
00:25:18with just
00:25:19Graham Dilley
00:25:20to come
00:25:34calm piece
00:25:35of batting
00:25:36up there
00:25:37by England's
00:25:37number 11
00:25:38Graham Dilley
00:25:42looking quite
00:25:43unconcerned
00:25:43and striking
00:25:45everything so far
00:25:46in the middle
00:25:47of the bat
00:25:48we should
00:25:50think about
00:25:51changing our
00:25:52order around
00:25:52a bit
00:25:55and he's

00:26:21on the board
00:26:24it's a most
00:26:24uneven looking
00:26:25scorecard
00:26:26that but
00:26:26the way
00:26:27England
00:26:27started losing
00:26:28those quick
00:26:28wickets up
00:26:29the top
00:26:29it never really
00:26:30looked like
00:26:31getting past
00:26:32the 150 mark
00:26:33as far as I was
00:26:34concerned
00:26:3440 to
00:26:3540 to

00:26:41styles
00:26:42the bowlers
00:26:42a very good
00:26:43performance from
00:26:44those four men
00:26:45all fit again
00:26:46and able to take
00:26:47their place in this
00:26:48West Indies team
00:26:49for the final
00:26:49encounter
00:26:50all bowled

00:27:02wicket West Indies
00:27:03with Haynes 13
00:27:03and Greenwich 6
00:27:05just one moment
00:27:06of alarm for them
00:27:06and that was when
00:27:08Gordon Greenwich
00:27:09was facing
00:27:09Chris Old
00:27:10and Old got a good
00:27:11one to cut away
00:27:12from him
00:27:12found the outside
00:27:13edge of the bat
00:27:15and Berstow
00:27:16and Boots
00:27:16between them
00:27:17couldn't make the
00:27:18catch and I'm
00:27:18afraid it must go
00:27:19down as a
00:27:21question mark
00:27:21against David
00:27:22Berstow
00:27:23because he was
00:27:23moving to the
00:27:24left
00:27:25going down
00:27:26the leg side
00:27:26had to push
00:27:27back
00:27:27started to go
00:27:28for the catch
00:27:28and finally
00:27:31neither he
00:27:32nor Gooch
00:27:33able to get a

00:27:42I think

00:30:53didn't
00:30:53stick
00:31:01big
00:31:14big leg
00:31:16cutter
00:31:16just a bit
00:31:17too good
00:31:19John Abrams, he's taken
00:31:20Graham Stevenson's place
00:31:22as 12th man
00:31:23he's on subbing at the moment for Brian Rose
00:31:29and a bit of movement away from the bat there
00:31:35now that's the one Chris Held's been looking for
00:31:39oh didn't it go
00:31:40sharp leg break
00:31:55oh dear, oh dear, oh dear
00:31:59restrained and contained himself all that time
00:32:03and I'm absolutely certain that there was no way in which that ball was short enough to play such a
00:32:08shot
00:32:09an absolute nightmare of a shot
00:32:12and it must have been very very close to the off stump
00:32:15he's had his little slash and got away with it
00:32:17so I suspect he'll be getting his head down again now
00:32:23overpitched this time and took him quite firmly through with me Don
00:32:28John Abrams giving chase but
00:32:31the ball always going to win
00:32:35so Chris Held won't think much to that
00:32:38and then fraction of an inch of picking up his wicket
00:32:40and the very next ball is driven away for four
00:32:47well that's middled very effectively all right this time
00:32:51nice delivery there from both of them
00:32:54and he's very cross with himself about that
00:33:05not quite middled
00:33:09but going away with sufficient force there to find that long off boundary
00:33:14that's how the 50 comes up
00:33:2352 on the board and the 21st over
00:33:2726 of those, Stu Haynes, 20 to Greenwich
00:33:41tremendous shout going up particularly from second slip but
00:33:47the old spinner there gave it a great shout
00:33:51a little response there from both of them
00:33:56missed the bat
00:33:57but I want to think
00:33:58look at the second slip going up
00:34:00he's roaring up in the air
00:34:02but both of them knew in fact
00:34:04that the batsman had missed it
00:34:05by a good three or four inches
00:34:13and that'll be four
00:34:15the outfield is quick enough
00:34:17here at Headingley
00:34:18and that's running down the slope
00:34:36and when the chance came
00:34:40Graham Gooch couldn't hold it
00:34:44that's the one they've been waiting for
00:34:46the first real chance
00:34:48lots of balls gone past the edge
00:34:52that's the first one that's gone to hand
00:34:55and Gooch put it down
00:34:59a little slow to move there
00:35:01and it hit him on the hard part of the hand
00:35:04back towards the wrist
00:35:11John Embury
00:35:16he's about to bowl his first over
00:35:20this is the 33rd of the innings
00:35:24and it's happened
00:35:26at long last
00:35:29and John Embury
00:35:31willed on by many of us
00:35:33has finally achieved the breakthrough
00:35:3583 for one
00:35:36that was a good innings
00:35:37from Desmond Haynes
00:35:39and not just the wicket
00:35:41as being acclaimed by the crowd there
00:35:42but also the fact that Haynes
00:35:44has stuck at it
00:35:46yesterday afternoon
00:35:47and right through to within
00:35:4810 minutes of lunch today
00:35:5383 for one
00:35:55and a very good performance
00:35:57from Desmond Haynes
00:35:58and the ball is turning
00:36:02not turning quickly
00:36:03there's no grasp or firmness about the pitch
00:36:09and there goes another chance
00:36:11Gooch has already put down one
00:36:12and Berstow the man racing away down
00:36:15to the boundary
00:36:17with no chance of cutting it off
00:36:18four more to Greenwich
00:36:21and this has been a most
00:36:23exciting and frustrating session
00:36:25and that should have been too far
00:36:32Gordon Greenwich is 30
00:36:34he too has played well
00:36:36Haynes and Greenwich
00:36:37quite out of character
00:36:39on a pitch that really doesn't lend itself
00:36:41to too much stroke play
00:36:43an orthodox variety
00:36:46and they had a great opening partnership
00:36:50of 83
00:36:54shout was catch it
00:36:55it went in the air
00:36:56Scott Vivian Richards off the mark
00:36:59just five more runs
00:37:01added to take that lunchtime score
00:37:04along to 95 for one
00:37:06plenty of dramas in the morning
00:37:07my word the ball did move off the seam
00:37:09just as we thought it might
00:37:10and it was one of those things
00:37:13where we had to wait a long long time
00:37:15to see if the ball would turn
00:37:16as soon as John Embry came on
00:37:18it was nice to see him
00:37:19pick up the scalp
00:37:20of Desmond Haynes
00:37:21well we pick up play now
00:37:22after lunch
00:37:23it's the fourth over
00:37:25and it's John Embry
00:37:27bowling to Vivian Richards
00:37:28wonder of wonders
00:37:29it's an off spinner
00:37:30we have another one
00:37:31in the commentary box
00:37:32and the West Indies
00:37:33have moved along
00:37:34to 99
00:37:38well he doesn't like to be
00:37:40pinned down
00:37:41this man Richards
00:37:41no way
00:37:42I don't think that they can
00:37:43bolt him very long
00:37:44with that sort of feel
00:37:45hammers it for six over
00:37:48and showing that it's
00:37:49very difficult for any
00:37:50off spinner to go
00:37:51to Vivian Richards
00:37:51without a man out
00:37:56and immediately they're
00:37:58both am up to have a word
00:37:59with Embry
00:38:01so a fine way to bring up
00:38:02the hundred for West Indies
00:38:06cluster of close fielders
00:38:08and that's the Richards
00:38:09answer
00:38:16and he's out this time
00:38:18both are finally
00:38:20hands and headings
00:38:21of Gordon Greenwich
00:38:22totally out of character
00:38:23up goes the bill
00:38:25Ali Finger
00:38:26and West Indies
00:38:28are 105 for two
00:38:3034 then
00:38:31for Gordon Greenwich
00:38:32falling LBW
00:38:33to both
00:38:42so Richards on 13
00:38:45both have devolved to him
00:38:50particularly good delivery
00:38:51there
00:38:54Richards committed to the shot
00:38:56lifted and left him
00:39:00and even too good a ball
00:39:02for Richards to get an edge
00:39:04to
00:39:10it's a lovely shot
00:39:11in the front foot
00:39:13four runs all the way
00:39:17Richards moving on to 17 now
00:39:24to 110 for two
00:39:35that's pierce the gap
00:39:36it gets Bacchus underway
00:39:38it will give him chase
00:39:40with Embry in support
00:39:41back heel
00:39:43the greatest between the two
00:39:48and fired Bacchus
00:39:50gets off the mark
00:39:50with three runs
00:39:53no real justice here
00:39:54for Chris Old
00:39:56a very good length
00:39:58and line
00:39:59longish spell
00:40:00could so easily have
00:40:03had a couple of wickets
00:40:05but still to take one
00:40:09there again
00:40:10four fellas streaky runs
00:40:12more Viv Richards
00:40:14all count
00:40:15but no intention
00:40:16of finding that particular
00:40:18boundary here
00:40:24get a good shot of that
00:40:26from the Cokes
00:40:27lane
00:40:27and he's going to try
00:40:29and hammer it
00:40:30through that mid-off
00:40:31area again
00:40:32the ball
00:40:32cutting back
00:40:33late off the pitch
00:40:35eventually picks four up
00:40:37way down
00:40:38at deep square leg
00:40:40he goes on to a 23
00:40:421-23 the score
00:40:441-23 the score
00:40:58that's beaten cover point
00:41:20and he's gone
00:41:23inside edge
00:41:26and Chris Old
00:41:27has broken through
00:41:30with the assistance
00:41:31of the batsmen
00:41:32a little bit of ill fortune
00:41:37there for Vivian Richards
00:41:38but at long last
00:41:41England have had a little bit
00:41:42of good luck
00:42:12that's a very good shot
00:42:12of the back foot
00:42:13by Fodvakas
00:42:15takes him now
00:42:16on to 11
00:42:19and it's around 2
00:42:46Dilley caught an old
00:42:48the change
00:42:50the change has worked
00:42:51Beckas turning away
00:42:53on to
00:43:10simple catch
00:43:11to Dilley
00:43:13and it's 142 for 4
00:43:18and this was definitely
00:43:19case of the wicket
00:43:20the ball just held up
00:43:22a little bit
00:43:24Bacchus playing it
00:43:25on the onside
00:43:26and a gentle catch
00:43:28back to
00:43:30Brahamdiff
00:43:31and England
00:43:32fighting back here
00:43:35as well they'd eat it
00:43:58always likely to be a nervous
00:44:00second run
00:44:00second run
00:44:29John Abraham
00:44:38John Abrahams
00:44:39Mark then with
00:44:40it was very much a hard pitch stroke
00:44:45to take the scores
00:45:02150 on the board now so it's a lead of 7 runs
00:45:066 wickets in hand
00:45:09every run now priceless for West Indies
00:45:11and difficult for England
00:45:20he's done it again
00:45:22Botham this time
00:45:30Ian Botham
00:45:32trouble there when he missed that catch
00:45:34off Chris Old
00:45:34the finger
00:45:36the interesting thing he was going to
00:45:39captain England in the meantime
00:45:44Brian Rose must be a candidate
00:45:45he's already off the field
00:45:46one would anticipate it
00:45:48that Geoff Boycott really must take over
00:45:51Boycott gone into a third slip anyway now
00:46:02that's a goody shot from Cali Trowne
00:46:04before runs there
00:46:05the first time he's really connected
00:46:10being pinned down by this accurate England attack
00:46:18and he's gone this time
00:46:20the edge is there and
00:46:22Barstow has made the catch
00:46:23good goal in change
00:46:24made by Boycott here bringing Gooch on
00:46:26and he's broken this very stubborn partnership
00:46:29Coliskin goes for 12 which leaves West Indies now 170 for 5
00:46:45that short and beautifully hooked away by Murray
00:46:49races away down to the deep square length boundary
00:46:54just one more over bold up to T that by Graham Gooch and two runs came off that took it
00:47:00along to 179 for 5
00:47:02Cali Trowne had played quite adequately up to T there
00:47:05and the England bowlers
00:47:06very frustrated
00:47:07each had one wicket to his name
00:47:10Graham Gooch coming on
00:47:11just before the T interval to pick up one for two
00:47:13from two overs
00:47:15one made
00:47:16and we pick up play now in the first over after T
00:47:18just three runs added
00:47:20182 for 5 the score
00:47:24over pitch the full task and that's four more
00:47:29straight down the ground to the football stand in
00:47:36gone
00:47:38Derek Murray that was an absolute beast of a ball
00:47:41it fairly exploded from just short of a good length
00:47:45John Embry taking the catch
00:47:49couching it neatly
00:47:50and it's 198 for 6
00:47:58so
00:48:17best who is picked him up this time
00:48:19Marshall goes for Nought
00:48:21and England are right in the scoundrel
00:48:24Although they're just over 50 behind, about 98 for seven, and Marshall is caught best over Dilly.
00:48:33And with a little bit of luck, they can hold this lead down to reasonable proportions and get back in
00:48:41the game later tonight and all day on Monday.
00:48:52There's four of them.
00:48:59200 for seven.
00:49:02Two for seven.
00:49:07And Alvin Kalicharan goes into the 30s, 32 he is.
00:49:17That's a good save catch there to John Emburey.
00:49:21Jogard has gone without scoring, 207 for eight.
00:49:25Kalicharan is still 37, not out.
00:49:29And Graham Gooch picks up another wicket.
00:49:36Graham Dilly now new over to Kalicharan.
00:49:41And he's got to be out this time, yes.
00:49:47Dilly strikes again.
00:49:49Wayne Larkins at cover.
00:49:51Kalicharan gone for 37.
00:49:52And wickets tumbling here and heading all over the place.
00:49:58207 now for nine.
00:50:10Waiting for the one pitch to open, has put it away very nicely through mid-off.
00:50:17So these are quite valuable runs coming from this last wicket pair.
00:50:23Michael Holin.
00:50:28It's all now to Holin.
00:50:32And he's found a big gap on the leg side.
00:50:35It's belted away to square leg for four.
00:50:40It's not been one of the greatest days for watching cricket.
00:50:43It's been a bit cool out there most of the day.
00:50:48Great shortage of sunshine.
00:50:51Disappointment to them all on Thursday when no play was possible at all.
00:50:55But they're here in good numbers today.
00:51:02That's gone like a rocket through mid-off.
00:51:05A short arm jab almost there, but at four for Holin.
00:51:13One of those days for bowlers.
00:51:16They beat the bat.
00:51:17Time after time.
00:51:20And when the bat's at the middles, it races away for four.
00:51:28And there's the end.
00:51:30Michael Holin plays on.
00:51:33Bold old 35.
00:51:35Colin Croft not out one.
00:51:38The West Indies innings ends at 245.
00:51:44A lead of 102.
00:51:47And that's a very dangerous looking lead on this pitch.
00:51:52Indeed, it was a very dangerous looking lead.
00:51:55And the ball had moved around so much that it was quite clear
00:51:58the bowlers would remain on top for the rest of this game.
00:52:01A great opening partnership there between Greenwich and Haynes.
00:52:0483 runs.
00:52:05And good batting all the way down the list there.
00:52:07A couple of ducks interspersed with Holding making 35.
00:52:11And Kallitra in the middle of the order 37.
00:52:13But a great last wicket partnership between Michael Holding and Colin Croft.
00:52:18The bowlers, a frustrating day for them.
00:52:20Dilly four for 79.
00:52:21Old two for 64.
00:52:23Both of them one for 31.
00:52:24Embury vastly under bowled in my opinion one for 25.
00:52:28And Gooch two for 18.
00:52:30And by the close, 20 minutes to bat.
00:52:33England had made 22 without loss.
00:52:36Gooch not out 12.
00:52:37Boycott not out nine.
00:52:38They had to get through five fiery overs.
00:52:41Three of them from Michael Holding.
00:52:42He only got a go at Jeff Boycott towards the end of the day.
00:52:46And he beat him with an absolute beauty.
00:52:49Just about three balls from the close of play.
00:52:51Boycott and Gooch survived.
00:52:5322 without loss.
00:52:54The lead for the West Indies now is 80.
00:52:57Today was most intriguing.
00:52:59I can tell you that Monday when play resumes will be equally so.
00:53:03The ball is very much on top.
00:53:05It's moving off the seam both ways.
00:53:07Very little movement in the air.
00:53:08Just occasional movement there.
00:53:10And there is some spin.
00:53:11But that's not going to worry the West Indians.
00:53:12They don't have a spinner.
00:53:13And their pace bowlers will be ripping into the England batsmen again on Monday.
00:53:18The men who have to give England a great start.
00:53:21Those two who were there at the close of play tonight.
00:53:23Graham Gooch.
00:53:24Staunch.
00:53:25And he's been around since 1975.
00:53:27Courageous.
00:53:28Geoffrey Boycott.
00:53:29A true professional.
00:53:30And a great player.
00:53:31They must give England a good start.
00:53:33If they're to have a chance of squaring this series.
00:53:36Good night.
00:53:52Two for 18.
00:53:54And by the close, 20 minutes to bat.
00:53:57England had made 22 without loss.
00:54:00Gooch not out 12.
00:54:01Boycott not out 9.
00:54:03They had to get through five fiery overs.
00:54:05Three of them from Michael Holding.
00:54:06He only got a go with Geoff Boycott towards the end of the day.
00:54:09And he beat him with an absolute beauty.
00:54:13Just about three balls from the close of play.
00:54:16Boycott and Gooch survive.
00:54:1722 without loss.
00:54:18They must give England a good start.
00:54:20If they're to have a chance of squaring this series.
00:54:23Good night.
00:54:27An astonishing job done by the ground staff here at Headingley.
00:54:30The rain belted down yesterday.
00:54:32And most of last night.
00:54:34And Keith Boyce and his men still managed to get the game away on time here.
00:54:38The final day of this final Cornhill Test match.
00:54:4222 for no wicket at the start of play.
00:54:44England in their second innings.
00:54:45Here's the first over of the day.
00:54:47No addition to the score.
00:54:48Colin Croft is bowling.
00:54:50And Geoffrey Boycott, the local hero, taking strike with Jim Laker in the commentary box.
00:54:57Oh, it's a real vicious one there.
00:55:02Certainly there's four-legged byers by Bill Alley.
00:55:07And a really nasty delivery.
00:55:16Just striking the boycott around about the shoulder.
00:55:35There's a shot overpitched.
00:55:37Chase there for Lesmond Haynes.
00:55:42He's not taking any chances at all.
00:55:45It's always been one of the damper parts of the ground there in front of the pavilion
00:55:49where the players, of course, have their net practice.
00:56:00Helped into Gooch.
00:56:03There's a nice full toss.
00:56:05Four runs.
00:56:14I've got to make the most of the loose delivery.
00:56:17Don't get too many of those from holding.
00:56:21That's real experience and years and years of effort in there.
00:56:33Sorry, settle down again.
00:56:35Croft back over the wicket to him.
00:56:36And there's trouble here.
00:56:39Oh, dear, dear.
00:56:41They were very, very lucky.
00:56:42Very fortunate there.
00:56:43They got in a great tangle again.
00:56:45It's gone through for four overthrows.
00:56:53So, I've had a good fortune there.
00:56:55The 50 going on the board.
00:57:00We've got pushing this on the leg side.
00:57:04See him set off for a run.
00:57:06And then decides as Gooch has got halfway down to send him back.
00:57:09If that throw had been accurate, of course, poor old Graham Gooch would have been on his way again.
00:57:14Instead, Boycott picked up four runs for it.
00:57:18So, it goes on to 20 now.
00:57:22No abatement in that wind out there.
00:57:24It's still blowing like fury right across the pitch.
00:57:34Just, just short there of forward short leg.
00:57:37Nearly pushed that into Fired Bacchus' hand.
00:57:49Just, as you can see there, inches away.
00:58:11Just, as you can see there, inches away.
00:58:16But, uh, fairly flew off the outside edge.
00:58:23So, perhaps Graham Gooch had your last few remarks.
00:58:26Dead.
00:58:28He's...
00:58:28After some quick runs.
00:58:31So, Vivian Richards making his first change of the morning.
00:58:35With, uh, Malcolm Marshall coming on to take over from Collingcroft.
00:58:41Scalbold.
00:58:42Scalbold.
00:58:43I was saying a little earlier that Marshall
00:58:46doesn't bother now coming around the wicketed boycott.
00:58:48He's over there to...
00:58:51Graham Gooch.
00:58:52And Gooch only just fractionally outside off stump there.
00:58:56He's over there.
00:58:56He's over there.
00:59:04David.
00:59:04That's not far away.
00:59:05It's going down the leg side, I'd say.
00:59:08Cut back to beat that defensive stroke.
00:59:09Tom Graveney's in the commentary box with us now.
00:59:14And Malcolm Marshall's following a very good spell here.
00:59:17And that just cut back a little bit.
00:59:19I think it probably would have missed the leg stump.
00:59:23these two batsmen
00:59:24are not
00:59:26very happy with each other running between the wickets
00:59:29there's
00:59:29a lot of indecision
00:59:32I'm afraid
00:59:37backers
00:59:38fielder there
00:59:40and Joe Gardner
00:59:43has finished
00:59:44his first over and that may well be it
00:59:46he might
00:59:47I wonder if he's done that groin muscle again
00:59:50he was under an injury cloud before
00:59:53the start of the game
00:59:55but he's done nothing
00:59:58in the meantime
00:59:59that might have appeared
01:00:01likely to aggravate it
01:00:06at any rate he's
01:00:07going off the field
01:00:09and to replace Joe Gardner
01:00:11out in the centre is
01:00:13Derek Parry
01:00:15doesn't make all that many appearances on the field
01:00:17as a player
01:00:18but as a 12th man
01:00:20he's very useful
01:00:21a very good fielder
01:00:23I've seen a mixture of cricket over the series
01:00:25some very good
01:00:26some ordinary
01:00:29as happens in any test series I suppose
01:00:32but 42 hours out of
01:00:35the five test series
01:00:37is really desperate
01:00:39as far as the paying spectator is concerned
01:00:41and not a great deal
01:00:44anyone can do about it
01:00:52Desmond Haynes will pick that up
01:00:54for just two runs
01:01:12it's found the gap all right this time
01:01:15that's four runs for Graham Dooch
01:01:21quite a half volley
01:01:22particularly good shot there
01:01:23from Graham Dooch
01:01:24because Marshall had
01:01:25kept both his batsmen
01:01:27pinned down
01:01:28in a very good and accurate spell
01:01:51single off the no ball
01:01:53brings Graham Dooch
01:01:5510th 50 in test match
01:01:58made out of an open stand there
01:02:01of 90 with Jeff Boycott
01:02:02and in a good time
01:02:04just 108 minutes
01:02:05he's only received 84 balls
01:02:07and included six fours in it
01:02:11spread around
01:02:12much more defensively now
01:02:15a bit of movement is out this time
01:02:17up goes unfair Alice Finger
01:02:18and
01:02:20Malcolm Marshall
01:02:21who's threatened to destroy Graham Dooch
01:02:23once or twice
01:02:23LBW
01:02:24but the fourth and fifth appeal is hard
01:02:26and this time it's answered in his favour
01:02:28so the
01:02:28first wicket goes down for England
01:02:30on 95
01:02:31with Gooch LBW to Marshall
01:02:33he goes for 55
01:02:36so there's Gooch
01:02:38leg before to Marshall
01:02:40the ball cutting back
01:02:42quite sharply in fact
01:02:44appreciable cut for Marshall
01:02:46Gooch in fact
01:02:47today has been
01:02:49given a few problems
01:02:50with that ball cutting back
01:02:51in turn
01:02:52from Marshall
01:02:53and also by
01:02:54King's end swinger
01:02:57so that's a
01:02:59deserving reward for Marshall
01:03:00to have had that wicket
01:03:01he has beaten the bat
01:03:03several times in this spell
01:03:13quite nicely into that
01:03:15bringing two runs
01:03:16and safely off the mark
01:03:17it's a very important
01:03:18difference of course
01:03:19for Wayne Larkins
01:03:23almost any time now
01:03:24the teams for the Prudential
01:03:26one day matches against Australia
01:03:28will be named
01:03:29and of course
01:03:29the centenary test match
01:03:31to follow
01:03:37Marshall
01:03:38Marshall to boycott
01:03:40there's the quickly taken
01:03:42single
01:03:42single which brings up
01:03:43the three-finger swing
01:03:45that's 100 going up
01:03:46on the board
01:03:46in the 30th over
01:03:49well put there
01:03:50since the start
01:03:50has made the 30
01:04:00one of them
01:04:01it's been a very cold morning
01:04:03out there
01:04:03for the West Indies
01:04:05this very strong wind
01:04:06still blowing across the ground
01:04:08the field really back
01:04:10on the defensive
01:04:11Collis King bowls again
01:04:14Boycott plays a glorious shot
01:04:15and the Swedish others
01:04:17he's played all morning
01:04:18doesn't make a run for it
01:04:19because Bacchus pulled off
01:04:20a really great stop there
01:04:24one more over
01:04:25bowled up to the luncheon interval
01:04:26just five runs coming from it
01:04:28that over
01:04:28was bowled by Malcolm Marshall
01:04:30took the score along to
01:04:33109 for one
01:04:34Boycott 37
01:04:35and Wayne Larkins was six
01:04:37here's the third over
01:04:38after lunch now
01:04:39it's Colin Croft
01:04:40Bonnie again to Geoffrey Boycott
01:04:41about seven runs have been added
01:04:43116 for one
01:04:44and in the commentary box
01:04:45with me is Tom Graveney
01:04:54you won't see anything
01:04:56better than that
01:05:03be nice to watch that again
01:05:08Geoffrey Boycott here
01:05:09beautifully in position
01:05:10left foot
01:05:12just goes a little bit
01:05:13but he gets in position
01:05:14and times that
01:05:16absolutely perfectly
01:05:19shot away through mid wicket
01:05:22no chance for any fielders at all
01:05:25that is the best shot
01:05:27that Geoffrey Boycott has played
01:05:28in this innings
01:05:40oh dear
01:05:42oh dear
01:05:44it was
01:05:45a very wise second choice
01:05:47by Geoff Boycott there
01:06:13another very good strike
01:06:16kick from Geoff Boycott
01:06:18right across there
01:06:20in the middle of the bat
01:06:34and that in fact
01:06:36is the third
01:06:39nasty short pitch delivery
01:06:40that Geoff Boycott has had to face this over
01:06:52well he's going to have to go
01:06:54well he's going to have to go
01:06:55but I'll be interested to see what Ken Palmer has to say to
01:06:58to Colin Croft apart from well bold
01:07:04court culture on bold
01:07:05Croft Boycott goes for 47
01:07:08well my own feeling is that he's bowled about five bounces this over
01:07:13and that in my book is intimidation
01:07:19so it doesn't look as though Palmer's going to say anything too croft
01:07:24but I must say I'm very very surprised
01:07:31and that's well controlled
01:07:34and beautifully fielded
01:07:39and a lovely off balance throw
01:07:41even though it wasn't quite over the top of the bails
01:07:49oh close
01:07:50very close indeed
01:07:52and that's Michael Holding's breakthrough
01:07:54I don't think there's much doubt about that
01:07:56he's beaten for pace there
01:07:58Mike Gatting
01:08:00and
01:08:01Holding is through him
01:08:02third wicket goes down
01:08:05129 on the board
01:08:08Gatting has gone
01:08:094-1
01:08:11Brian Rose is the man coming out on the right of your picture
01:08:13he has a torn muscle
01:08:15he'll be able to use a runner
01:08:17the runner is Graham Gooch
01:08:20129.43
01:08:25yes it does seem strange this reluctance with
01:08:30both Rose and Ian Botham injured
01:08:35that Peter Willey has not been shifted up the order
01:08:38he's played two match saving innings
01:08:41one at Manchester
01:08:42and one again at the Oval
01:08:43and got runs
01:08:45that seemed an ideal opportunity
01:08:48to give him the chance to go in
01:08:49higher up the order here
01:08:52albeit only at number 5
01:09:03suddenly England's lead
01:09:06of 27
01:09:10three wickets down
01:09:14begins to look a little on the tiny side
01:09:17an injured batsman in now Rose
01:09:19another one both of them to come
01:09:20holding bowling
01:09:24and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:26and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:27and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:27and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:29and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:33and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:42and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:44and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:45and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:45and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:46and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:46and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:46and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:47and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:47and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:48and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:48and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:49and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:50and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:09:54and a nice start for Brian Rose
01:10:07short one, that's pulled away very nicely for four runs, 150 comes up, and the four going into the book
01:10:31oh yes, I'm afraid that's got to go, kept a little bit low, Likens has gone for 30 LBW to
01:10:39Marshall
01:10:40well it's almost identical ball to the Graham Gooch, dismissal, just short of the length and Marshall gets this ball
01:10:50to skid on
01:11:14that's safe, and it's a great moment for Ian Botham, because that's his 1500th run in test cricket, and it's
01:11:22a great double for him
01:11:24moving from 1499 to 1500, and he's also taken 150 wickets in test matches
01:11:33Botham's performance follows on him beating Vino Mankaj's record of fastest to the test double of 1,000 runs and
01:11:43100 wickets
01:11:47I think that came off the pad
01:11:50and I have a feeling that Croft didn't really go up for it at the start, he just followed up
01:11:54rather a, what started as a half-hearted appeal down there
01:11:58but I think it flicked the pad on the way through rather than the inside edge of the pad
01:12:11and he's gone, he and both of them gone, LBW to Malcolm Marshall
01:12:21played 7 and uh, Brian Rose is 13, 174 for 5 now
01:12:27Peter Willey
01:12:30and he's facing Colin Croft
01:12:34off the mark
01:12:36and uh, the other runner, Graham Gooch, just making his ground at the far end there
01:12:43Those of you, uh, who are wondering why Gooch is dressed as he is, uh, the runner has to wear
01:12:51normal equipment
01:12:53he can't go out there without pads
01:12:55might assist him in running faster
01:12:58could, I suppose, uh, dispense with his gloves, but he certainly couldn't dispense with the pads and the bat
01:13:05he doesn't have to wear a helmet
01:13:14rather like that chop
01:13:34there might have even been an approving nod from Ken Palmer, the umpire without perhaps showing it, because uh, Ken
01:13:42tells me he used to bowl long hours at Brian Rose
01:13:44and the Nets down at Somerset
01:13:53Derek Perry's not going to be too pleased about that, but uh, that's nothing to the way Colin Croft will
01:14:01feel
01:14:01as those four runs go onto his bowling fingers
01:14:15that's a great chop
01:14:19really nice piece of prick at that
01:14:24and, uh, for the luxury of a, a little half smile there
01:14:31one eighty-nine, four five at tee, twenty-five to Rose, he was playing extremely well at that stage
01:14:37Willie was not out one
01:14:39and the only England wicket to fall after the tee interval was that of Peter Willie who got an absolute
01:14:44beauty from, uh, Michael Holding
01:14:46some very good bowling from Holding today
01:14:48he bowled very fast, so too did Croft
01:14:50and, uh, Willie couldn't do much
01:14:52at all about the delivery
01:14:54that dismissed him, moved away a little bit
01:14:56found the outside edge, and Derek Murray
01:14:58did the rest, so
01:14:59two hundred and twenty-seven for six
01:15:02in the end, Ian Botham declared
01:15:04at, uh, twenty minutes past five
01:15:06that was the end of the game, a rain-mired
01:15:08match, bad luck for both sides
01:15:10and Brian Rose remained forty-three not out
01:15:12and extremely good innings
01:15:14that, he took everything the West Indians threw at him today
01:15:17and David Bairstow at the end, uh, quite nicely not out
01:15:20at, uh, nine
01:15:22a great match for him
01:15:23top scorer in the first innings
01:15:24in his debut test
01:15:26the West Indian bowling
01:15:28Michael Holding
01:15:28two for sixty-two
01:15:29Colin Croft
01:15:31one for sixty-five
01:15:32he only picked up one wicket
01:15:33but my word
01:15:33there's plenty of firepower out there today
01:15:35with Colin Croft
01:15:37and, uh, Malcolm Marshall
01:15:39three for forty-two
01:15:40he came in
01:15:40it was a nice little result for him
01:15:42in, uh, the last test match
01:15:44of the series
01:15:45well, the presentations were made
01:15:46by, uh, John Arlett
01:15:48he was, uh, the adjudicator
01:15:50of the man of the match
01:15:51and the man of the series
01:15:51in this final Cornhill test
01:15:53and he nominated Desmond Haynes
01:15:55as the man of the match
01:15:56for his performance
01:15:57in the West Indies first innings
01:15:58uh, where he shared that partnership
01:16:00with Gordon Greenwich
01:16:01and he nominated Joe Garner
01:16:03as man of the series
01:16:05for, uh, his purposeful
01:16:07and, uh, penetrated bowling
01:16:09throughout
01:16:09it was a very fine performance
01:16:11from Garner
01:16:11unfortunately he wasn't on the field today
01:16:13you saw in those bowling figures
01:16:14he bowled just the one over
01:16:16and then he had to retire
01:16:17with shoulder trouble
01:16:19well, after the match
01:16:20and after the presentations
01:16:21Peter West
01:16:22had a word with Ian Botham
01:16:23and West Indian skipper
01:16:25Clive Lloyd
01:16:26can we say congratulations
01:16:28on winning the series
01:16:29and commiserations
01:16:30to you personally
01:16:31for the injury problems
01:16:32you've had
01:16:32uh, yeah, um, thank you Peter
01:16:35it was, I suppose
01:16:36a bit of a disappointment
01:16:37not finishing, you know
01:16:39starting at least
01:16:40in this test match
01:16:41um, but
01:16:42it wasn't to be
01:16:43so, you know
01:16:44the fellas played extremely well
01:16:46um, Viv I thought
01:16:47handled the side
01:16:48um, quite well for the first time
01:16:50and I was quite happy with the
01:16:52the result actually
01:16:53it really has been
01:16:54a watery series Ian
01:16:56you've lost about
01:16:56the equivalent of
01:16:57seven whole days play
01:16:58yeah, it seems a lot longer actually
01:17:00because
01:17:00it's been unfortunate
01:17:02for both sides
01:17:02I think it's been
01:17:03a very entertaining series
01:17:04but we've just been
01:17:05stopping and going
01:17:06stopping and going
01:17:07and people haven't been able
01:17:08to get into rhythms
01:17:09and get any kind of form
01:17:10so it's, you know
01:17:11it's been the same now
01:17:12in county games as well
01:17:12so it's been
01:17:13it's been a terrible year for us
01:17:15so the series
01:17:16depended, the outcome of it
01:17:18on one positive result
01:17:19at Trent Bridge
01:17:19do you feel now
01:17:20looking back on that
01:17:21I mean that
01:17:22was touch and go either way
01:17:23wasn't it Ian?
01:17:24yeah, it was
01:17:25you know
01:17:26cricket's a game of ifs and buts
01:17:27you know
01:17:28erm
01:17:29you know
01:17:29it was a good game
01:17:31it showed
01:17:32showed the kind of cricket
01:17:33that could have been played
01:17:34if it had got away with the weather
01:17:36but er
01:17:36it wasn't a move
01:17:37so
01:17:39unfortunately it's a little bit
01:17:39it was probably a little bit tamer
01:17:41than it could have been
01:17:42do you feel Clive
01:17:43that if the weather had been kinder
01:17:44you would have won this series
01:17:45by a larger margin?
01:17:47er
01:17:48oh yes
01:17:48as Ian said ifs and buts
01:17:51I don't suppose Ian would agree with you
01:17:52I'm not talking about that
01:17:52well I presume that we
01:17:54we probably
01:17:54might have had a
01:17:56a better run actually
01:17:57because
01:17:57I think
01:17:58things were tipped in our favour
01:17:59quite a few times
01:18:00but there again we would have had
01:18:02er
01:18:03erm
01:18:04the area to sort of manoeuvre
01:18:05we would have been able to know
01:18:07the really strengths and the weaknesses of one another
01:18:09in a five day test of such
01:18:11we haven't had that
01:18:12so
01:18:12I suppose
01:18:13in
01:18:14it has turned out that we really don't know that much
01:18:16still about one another
01:18:17but erm
01:18:18it's unfortunate the weather stopped things
01:18:20but there's another series in the West Indies
01:18:23and I hope
01:18:23I'm sure we wouldn't have this much rain
01:18:25I was just wondering what you would say would be the West Indies pluses
01:18:28to emerge from this series Clive
01:18:29perhaps the batting of Desmond Haynes?
01:18:31yes
01:18:31um
01:18:33Malcolm Marshall
01:18:34and
01:18:35Fahoud Backus
01:18:36erm
01:18:36I thought they
01:18:37you know they played
01:18:38they played very well
01:18:40erm
01:18:41those are the
01:18:42the three that I thought that
01:18:43and they're all young players
01:18:44so it's a good thing for us actually
01:18:45that
01:18:46they've come through
01:18:47Desmond Haynes and
01:18:48and
01:18:49and Fahoud to an extent
01:18:50have never played in England
01:18:51you know
01:18:51they've never experienced English conditions
01:18:54and they've done extremely well
01:18:55and what about from the England point of view Ian?
01:18:58I think
01:18:58without a doubt the biggest plus is Grandilly
01:19:00you know
01:19:00I think he's done marvellously well
01:19:01erm
01:19:03and
01:19:03and I think he's
01:19:04he's going to make a few batsmen jump for a few years to come
01:19:06he's a guy
01:19:07you know he has genuine pace
01:19:08it's nice to see from an Englishman
01:19:09hmm
01:19:10Graham Gucci has really arrived
01:19:12Graham
01:19:12Graham Rose
01:19:13yeah
01:19:14there's
01:19:15Gucci worked very hard this last winter in Australia
01:19:18and it's paid dividends for him
01:19:19and
01:19:19Rosie I think has probably been a little bit unlucky
01:19:21to be out of the international scene for
01:19:23as long as he has
01:19:24I must ask you this question because there's been a lot of public comment about it
01:19:28and you must guess what it is
01:19:29the over rates
01:19:30the West Indies over rate
01:19:32Clive was less than 14 an hour
01:19:34and the England one was nothing to be proud of Ian
01:19:36that was less than 15 an hour
01:19:38what can be done about it?
01:19:40well I suppose people like this
01:19:42because of county cricket
01:19:44people think
01:19:44you know they're bowling 18 and 19 overs in an hour
01:19:47but they're running up and down
01:19:48you know
01:19:49I mean
01:19:49you can't play test cricket like that
01:19:51you've got to be methodical in what you're doing
01:19:54when you're going back to your market
01:19:55you've got to think about what you're doing
01:19:56because you're playing against test class players
01:19:59it's obvious that
01:20:00we were sure
01:20:01I think both sides would like to bowl 16 in an hour
01:20:03if it were possible
01:20:05but
01:20:06when you look back at Lords
01:20:08Graham Gooch was batting extremely well
01:20:10nobody talked about over rate
01:20:12when he was batting at the Oval
01:20:14and he made 83
01:20:15splendid runs
01:20:16nobody talked about over rate
01:20:17but
01:20:17all of a sudden
01:20:18in the last couple of test matches
01:20:20it's the over rate and the over rate
01:20:21I think if good cricket is played
01:20:23and
01:20:24and runs are being scored
01:20:25regardless if you have fast bowlers or not
01:20:27you know
01:20:27I mean
01:20:28people want to see good cricket
01:20:29how many of them think about the over rate?
01:20:31what's your slant Ian?
01:20:33well
01:20:34the way I see it is
01:20:34if
01:20:35if I was captain of England
01:20:37I had four bowlers of
01:20:38four quick bowlers of
01:20:40that Clive's got
01:20:41I'd be inclined to play them all
01:20:42and inclined to bowl them all
01:20:44so
01:20:45I think that's just a modern thing
01:20:47I
01:20:48I personally
01:20:49obviously
01:20:49we would like to see it as players
01:20:51and
01:20:52like Clive said
01:20:52we'd all like to bowl 16 overs now
01:20:54but I just don't think in test cricket today
01:20:57it's
01:20:57completely
01:20:58you know
01:20:58that's not the most important thing in my book
01:21:00the most important thing is getting out there and winning
01:21:03people might say
01:21:03if you're going to bowl the overs
01:21:04you know
01:21:04you're not going to win
01:21:05but
01:21:06I don't know
01:21:07one last question Ian

01:21:21you know
01:21:22I think they're going to seem like military medium after what we've had this summer
01:21:24I don't mean that as derogatory at all towards the Australian team
01:21:28but
01:21:29I think
01:21:29the lads are
01:21:31really looking forward to it
01:21:32and we just hope the weather stays good for the centenary test
01:21:34and
01:21:35if it's anything like the game that was in Australia
01:21:37it'll be a great game for the spectators

01:22:08struggled a little bit in the present game against Surrey
01:22:12and the next match we look forward to
01:22:13in fact test match level is the centenary test between Ian Botham's side

01:22:23a lot of good cricket played some very ordinary
01:22:26you've heard that Ian Botham and Clive Lloyd have their own ideas on one of the contentious matters of the
01:22:32summer
01:22:33that's to do with over rates
01:22:35they're entitled to their opinion in exactly the same way as I'm entitled to mine
