00:00Hello and welcome wherever you may be to Centurion in South Africa. We're at Supersport Park for
00:12this the first test match between South Africa and England. Turmoil a whole lot of it off the field
00:20for South Africa but now time to turn to things on the field and they'll be looking forward to that
00:25a new coaching staff with a whole lot of stars in Boucher, Kallis but now it's about those who are on
00:35the field. Markram and Elga out first a good start necessary for South Africa. Recap on the teams
00:44England winning the toss and deciding that they'll field first. Hamza van der Dusen on debut
00:51Duplicy the captain all looking for a really good start they'll hope that they'll have some time up
00:57in the change room whilst they watch their openers go to work. Dakok Pretorius on debut the all-rounder
01:03Vernon Philander announced his retirement then it's Maharaj Rabada and Norkia to complete the
01:1011th for South Africa. Really important for them to show some confidence having gone five games
01:17without a win in fact five losses and so looking to just ensure that they get in and start well.
01:24Mike Atherton alongside a look through this side then Athers. Yes I'm one or two question marks about
01:30the top order that have been there for some time but Rory Burns is finding his feet at this level now
01:35Dom Sibley's just played a couple of matches he came into the team in New Zealand and has got plenty
01:41to prove. Joe Denley is just a little bit like Rory Burns finding his feet although he could do he
01:47getting his first test hundred then Root who likes to bat four now Ben Stokes who is playing
01:52thankfully there seems to be improved news about his father Jed. Bairstow is back in the side because
01:58of illness to Ollie Pope. Joss Butler who has the wicket keeping gloves these days. Sam Corrin plays
02:03because England are not playing a spinner. Jack Leach is unwell but I think they'd have played five
02:07seamers anyway so it's the first time that Anderson and Archer have played together in test cricket for
02:13England and the new ball bowl is probably broad and Anderson you've almost got a thousand wickets
02:18or thereabouts between those two so it's a strong new ball and seam attack for England. Root deciding
02:24to bowl first and you want to get wickets this morning and get ahead of the game. Look at those
02:29numbers absolutely fantastic James Anderson a skillful bowler 575 wickets. So it's interesting to see
02:37what game plan he also employs to the left handers over the many years he decided that going across
02:42the left hand to try to bring the slips into play was the preferred approach rather than trying to
02:47shape the ball back in and target the stumps what will we see from Jimmy today. Here we go then.
02:55Goal down the leg side and out first ball. What about that first start? Elga gone.
03:03You know we think you know my word all the work that's gone into the preparation
03:07I just get a feather on it. Henderson and the England team can celebrate South Africa one down.
03:12A gentle delivery down the leg side and Elgar playing outside the line of his body just tickles
03:19it down the leg side a desperate start for him and for South Africa. None for one.
03:24It's through. Off the mark. Zubair Hamza it goes for four and South Africa on the board as well.
03:41Over the top. Threw absolutely everything at it. And it's off the edge but flew too quickly and too high.
03:55And nearly does there. That's a beautiful line. A hint of swing in then the ball holding up off the seam.
04:02And it was just off the back foot as well which tend not to carry as much.
04:08A good start from Curran.
04:12That's out. Yes does carry to mid wicket.
04:16Well there you go. As Mikey said Sam Curran has the happy knack.
04:20And it's two strangles. It's two soft dismissals.
04:26Caught down the leg side Elgar and now chipping it to mid wicket Markram.
04:34Oh my gosh. Doesn't test cricket make you pay?
04:39Very important wicket for England I think for morale. A quiet period but that's now been broken.
04:45Markram gone for 20.
04:47Rossi Fandadus and then Quentin Kok.
04:51And then Dwayne Pretorius.
04:55Vernon Philander there.
05:01One of the best number eights going around. Kejav Maharaj. Good fighter with the bat.
05:05KG Rabat has a lot of talent with the bat. He doesn't necessarily bring to the test matches in which he plays.
05:10Very good. That's a good shot that. Wow. Big shot. And then it was a whiff as well.
05:22Extra bounce. Took him by surprise. He's gone away with that.
05:27He's going down to that vacant region but a little bit of an alert there for Faf Super C.
05:37That's a good ball.
05:40That is beautifully played. Slightly over pitched and just caressed through the covers.
05:52Yeah we were talking about Hamza. The word we didn't use was balance.
05:56Just watch this replay and watch his balance at the crease. It's perfect.
05:59Edged and gone.
06:10Broad has done it.
06:12Hamza was looking so comfortable at the crease. England needed a wicket and Broad has given them that wicket.
06:18Here's the dismissal length outside the offstump can comfortably let that go through to the keeper.
06:23Doesn't prods at it. Good low catch taken by Stokes.
06:26And again that's well timed. South African captain means business.
06:37There would have been a chat in the dressing room for England and I don't think the chat would have been two legs side deliveries to get South Africa away.
06:45He's got another one. Beautifully bowled by Curran. He's picked up his second. His first one was perhaps a little bit fortunate but not that one.
06:56That was beautifully bowled and perfectly described by Nasser.
07:00He's run up and challenged the technique of a batsman. Just keep it there or thereabouts.
07:08Played the perfect forward defence. You can see him in the background. It ended up at first slip.
07:13Ever since he's put an England shirt on he has a knack of getting into the game. He has two.
07:18And produce and made six. It's 97 for four.
07:23There's an edge and another catch. Root.
07:25Root. Hovering a first slip. He's caught another one. Quite comfortable. They're never easy in the slips.
07:31And that is an important wicket. Fafta per se. Good start from Broad.
07:35The two deliveries. The one before was an absolute beauty. Probably did too much. He followed it up again.
07:43Just rolling his fingers down the side of the ball. This time it finds the edge.
07:49Fafta blessi 29. Faces 80 deliveries.
07:55Oh it's a beautiful shot. The rex to cover for four. What a lovely drive to finish that over from de Kock.
08:06Good start from Broad though. 116 for five.
08:08Oh straight up. Straight up.
08:13Anderson and Archer after it. Doesn't quite get there.
08:21Well hello. Close. Very.
08:24You don't want me getting out of the dual route. You want me making sure if you're going to be
08:33trying to hit him a long way that you get right to the pitch. He wasn't anywhere close to the pitch of that.
08:39Long enough.
08:50Gone with the arc. Dwayne Pretorius.
08:54And gone for six.
08:54One for six.
09:06Up and over. It's off the outside edge. Another shot played.
09:09Quentin de Kock who's been. Well some wonderful shots and some iffy ones.
09:15Four. Keeps you on your toes doesn't he Quentin de Kock.
09:18And got a bit of luck. The ball squirts away off the thick outside edge.
09:3118th career 50 for Quentin de Kock.
09:36Enterprising innings and a crucial innings.
09:38162 for five.
09:46And he came in in a mini crisis and he's the perfect type of player to come in.
09:52When you've lost a couple of wickets because he will counter attack and that's exactly what he's done.
09:56Dangerous player.
10:03Torres goes off to another. That could go the whole way. I'm sure we'll send it upstairs to check.
10:08He's saying to Joe Root. If I hit you out of the attack.
10:11You get option. No option but to return to your tired seamers. I think that bounces just in front of the.
10:22Of the boundary line. Yeah four. I definitely saw it as a four.
10:29Have a look at this card.
10:31Firstly the batting card.
10:33The men who have gone.
10:36187 for five.
10:38De Kock and Pretorius unbeaten.
10:40Vernon Philander.
10:42Kajab Maharaj.
10:43Kady Rabada.
10:44And Heinrich Norkier.
10:46The men still to come.
10:48England. Well as I've said before.
10:50Sam Curran definitely the best of the English attack.
10:54His partnerships.
10:56This is the key one to build and build.
11:01There's an edge and Root's caught another one.
11:03That's his third.
11:05Very good catching from Joe Root at first lap.
11:07So Curran again.
11:08Just sliding one across the right hander.
11:11Finding the outside edge.
11:13And now he's broken the partnership.
11:14But the angle.
11:16The ball not shaping.
11:17Going to cross the right hand off.
11:19He's just boomeranged one back at.
11:21At him.
11:21Means he finds the outside edge.
11:23Good catch by Joe Root.
11:24And this is a very very important.
11:26Wicket.
11:27For England.
11:28Pretorius played nasty for his 33.
11:31One nine eight for six.
11:38My shots.
11:40Nice way to get going for Vernon Philander through extra cover.
11:44Very good from Vernon.
11:47This is the ability he's possessed throughout his career to play wonderful cricketing shots.
11:54Off the edge again.
11:56Oberslips again.
11:58Four again.
12:03It's a movement from the ball.
12:06If you look at it, it's almost like it's tailing more in me.
12:09He bows to the left hander.
12:15And are you saying that?
12:16I need a guy that floating just behind the sleeves.
12:21England, as I said, not bowling quite as well as we might have expected them to.
12:26Sam Curran the best of them.
12:29James Anderson perfectly tidy.
12:32Stewart brought two.
12:33And Joffre Archer below par is probably the best summary.
12:40Oh, bold.
12:41Oh, what a delivery.
12:43That is top work from Sam Curran.
12:46Been good all day.
12:48And he gets the big one.
12:51Quinton de Kock, five short of a century.
12:56Kock played beautifully.
12:57Got a good one from Curran that moved rather late in the air and a little bit off the pitch as well.
13:03Butler taking a straightforward catch.
13:05Well bold, Sam Curran.
13:06Well played, Quinton de Kock.
13:092.45 for seven and de Kock now gone for 95.
13:17Off the edge and into the hands.
13:19A wicket for Archer.
13:21Relief more than anything else.
13:27Maharaj gone.
13:28Well, he's not gone yet.
13:31He's standing there.
13:31But I think he will have to go.
13:34Looking at this, it just appeared to go straight into the hands.
13:38There didn't seem to be any doubt about the legitimacy of that catch.
13:43And that's why the soft signal from Chris Gaffney is out.
13:48Straight in by the fingers and well grasped.
13:53Nasser Hussain said earlier on that Chris Stokes doesn't drop many.
13:58Hardly drops any.
14:04I was surprised he stood actually.
14:07They turned round and
14:10would have probably felt that it was on its way down and came off the bat but
14:14yeah, out all day.
14:18So Maharaj gone and a wicket for Archer.
14:23Got him.
14:24Nicely done by Braun.
14:27Good work.
14:27Given that second new ball, Ben Stokes is pretty happy with that as well.
14:31A perfect end to the day for England.
14:35Absolutely vital.
14:37Only one wicket can be required in the morning.
14:39As we look at the batting card for South Africa.
14:44Dean Nelga.
14:45Gee, he'll be disappointed and he'll be sitting still fuming I'm sure knowing Dean in that change
14:50room with that strangle down the leg side.
14:52Markram for 20.
14:53So guys getting starts.
14:54Hamza also.
14:55Duplassi getting a start.
14:57Fanadusa not getting many on debut.
14:58De Kock.
15:0095 including 14 fours in pretty quick time.
15:03Pretorius play well for his 33 or 45.
15:06And Philander not out.
15:0828.
15:08He's been there for well over two hours now.
15:11And there's still Norkia to come and join Robata, join Philander rather in the morning.
15:17And as we reflect now on day one, there's the pie chart.
15:22And you can see that England ticked session one and also three.
15:28South Africa controlling session number two.
15:30So the upper hand, no doubt, to England on day one.
15:34Quinta de Kock held the South African batting together today.
15:37Having a quick look through the sessions.
15:3926 overs each in the first two.
15:41Three wickets falling, then two.
15:43South Africa playing very well.
15:45Counter-attacking in that afternoon session of play.
15:47Then in the evening session, 30 overs and four balls.
15:51Four for 90.
15:53Stuart Broad striking with the last ball of the day.
15:55277 for nine when the close came.
15:59And I'm delighted to say that Michael Holding and Sean Pollock are with me.
16:02But Quinta de Kock has come and joined us as well.
16:06Get rid of that water.
16:07He's kicking his drink away.
16:09Well played.
16:10Very good.
16:12Yeah, it's nice to just get some runs on the board.
16:15And, you know, I think also the score we have now could be also a challenging total.
16:21The wicket does seem to be getting tougher already.
16:23So I think if we can just get a couple more runs on the board and hopefully make it challenging
16:27for the English.
16:28When you say tougher, do you mean there's more sideways movement or the pace is more uneven?
16:33I think it's obviously the sideways movement is going to be, I think it's going to remain
16:36there for the most of the test match.
16:38I think it's just going to get a little bit quicker now.
16:39I think this morning, the wicket was more spongy, tennis ball bounce.
16:43I think now it's going to start getting quicker, more as the test goes on.
16:46I think it will, it will become more up and down as we go on with the test match.
16:50Well, we very much appreciate your time.
16:52There's your water back.
16:53Cool.
16:54I think you better head off for a shower.
16:55Yeah.
16:56Thanks, Carl.
16:56Thanks, Cody.
16:57Thanks very good.
17:14Good morning.
17:15Good day.
17:16Hello.
17:17Welcome, wherever you may be, to day number two here at Super Sport Park in South Africa
17:23against England in the first test match.
17:26England won the toss yesterday and decided that they would field first.
17:30But look through South Africa's scorecard and with a few starts there,
17:35they'll be unhappy that nobody actually got to three figures.
17:39That being said, 95 from Quinton de Kock was fabulous to watch
17:44and really looked a cut above with the way that everybody else played.
17:48And runs.
17:54Four of them.
18:00Got him.
18:01Gone.
18:02That's that then.
18:03Broad gets the last.
18:05Oh, he's checking it.
18:06It's going upstairs.
18:08I'm sure there'll be a heartbeat.
18:10There he is.
18:12Well, there you go.
18:13South Africa, 284 all out.
18:16And England will be happy with their work.
18:21At this point, having inserted South Africa, the huddle for South Africa
18:27to take final instruction from Fuff Duplessis.
18:30Here we go.
18:33Oh, has he got him?
18:34He has.
18:35First ball.
18:36The fingers gone up.
18:37There was a sound.
18:39There certainly was.
18:41But it looked like it was too good.
18:43Wow.
18:44What a start.
18:48There's a sound early.
18:49And that's bat on pad.
18:52I don't think that's enough to be given out on.
18:55It's never very pretty, but it's effective, Nasser.
19:07That's out, I think.
19:08That's a little nick.
19:09And this time, he walks off.
19:11The best of Vernon Philander.
19:14The great inquisitor.
19:15First up to Burns.
19:17Absolute Jaffa.
19:18Could do nothing about that.
19:20He goes for nine.
19:21Eleven for one.
19:25Beautiful timing.
19:29That's Dominic Sibley at his very best.
19:37Jesus, what a delivery that is.
19:39Oh, they think it's out.
19:40Sibley doesn't.
19:41Nor does the umpire.
19:42Well, immediately, Faf Duplassi has reviewed that.
19:46He didn't even talk to Rabada or De Kok.
19:48He made the decision to review it.
19:50And Sibley's turn to go.
19:52He's decided I've got no chance.
19:56Unless a poor rifle gave it out.
19:59Sibley for four, 15 for two.
20:07Lovely batting from Joe Rue.
20:08It's a textbook job that you'd show to anybody.
20:19Hasn't carried, I don't think.
20:20Big dive from Quintin de Kok across in front of first slip.
20:23Oh, it has carried, it has carried.
20:33What a moment.
20:36Oh, there's an edge, and it's found a gap.
20:40It's gone very quickly for four.
20:42There's been a couple of those kind of deliveries
20:47that have found their way to the boundary through thick edges.
20:56Punched down the ground.
20:57Mid-arm was fairly wide.
20:59Outfield as ever.
21:01Centurion is quick, and it runs away from you.
21:08That's a cracking stroke.
21:10In my view, Joe Rue's best shot.
21:15Atal, caught at the wicket.
21:17Vernon Philander gets the England captain.
21:20With that line that has haunted so many a good player.
21:25Anyway, Rue's gone for 29.
21:26It's 70 for three.
21:31Stroke.
21:35Saw that early, did Joe Denley?
21:41That's nicely played.
21:42Top shot for four.
21:44To end the over.
21:49Shot, beautifully played.
21:52Saw it early, and was right onto it, Ben Stokes.
21:55Ben Stokes.
21:59There's your answer.
22:01Top shot with the spin.
22:02Whatever spin there is, with Ben Stokes being lift-handed.
22:06And he's a big hitter.
22:10Gone again.
22:12Got it again.
22:13That's a fine stroke.
22:22Good, strong, bunt down the ground for four.
22:24Beautifully played by Stokes.
22:26That is fine.
22:32Really good stuff from Denley.
22:3542 deliveries for his first four.
22:38He's now hit another four.
22:40It's his ninth, which brings up his 50.
22:41There's a noise.
22:50They've gone up in a big way, the South Africans.
22:52There was definitely a noise.
22:54Because there's a spike on ultra edge.
22:56Oh, there is.
22:58There is.
22:59But that is a very, very important wicket.
23:02Played nicely for 50.
23:031.42 for four.
23:08Bowled him.
23:10That is a very good delivery.
23:12Trapped him on the crease, really.
23:16Berso's gone for one.
23:171.43 for five.
23:22Oh, he's edged it.
23:23Beautiful bowling.
23:24Enderic Noguia has done it.
23:26Beautiful line.
23:27Switching to around the wicket and finding the edge of the bat.
23:31First mental error from Ben Stokes.
23:33And it costs him.
23:35He goes for 35.
23:36It's 150 for six.
23:42Nicely played.
23:44He's an aggressive cricketer current.
23:51That's a nice shot.
23:54Very good work from Butler.
23:57That's a fine catch.
24:03Wow.
24:03That is special.
24:05There's a smile from a biter.
24:06He knows that some serious work has been done at short leg.
24:09And entertaining 20 from Sam Curran.
24:12176 for seven.
24:19De Kock's taken it.
24:20Big, big dive for Quinton De Kock.
24:23Two hands.
24:24Well in front of first slip.
24:25He's got a big smile on his face.
24:27That's a big wicket of Butler.
24:29He's going for 12, 176 for eight.
24:36Gone.
24:38Short.
24:40And edged into the gully.
24:41South Africa have been patient and they've been rewarded with wickets.
24:45Broad made two, 181 for nine.
24:50Bold him.
24:52Knocks over, off stump.
24:54Well all credit to South Africa.
24:57England, 181 all out.
25:02Vernon Philander, four for 16.
25:05Rabada, three for 68.
25:07So England on first innings.
25:09Trailed by 103.
25:11Oh, that's straight.
25:16That's very straight.
25:17It's out.
25:18It's given out straight away.
25:21If he has a standing, that's crashing.
25:24Right into the half of his left stump.
25:29Markram on his way.
25:31South Africa, two for one.
25:36Nicely timed.
25:37Got lucky with the direction, but he got a lot of bat on that.
25:41The bowling coaches, that's worked square.
25:45This could be the third boundary of the over.
25:54Oh, yes, it is a catch down the leg side.
25:57A moment of luck goes England's way and it was badly needed.
26:01Good grab by Josh Butler.
26:04South Africa, 25 for two.
26:05Second time around the lead, 128.
26:07Hamza gone.
26:08Oh, that's it.
26:12There you go.
26:13Inside edge and it's a good catch behind.
26:18Just rears up and cuts back.
26:20Dean Algar made 22.
26:21It's 29 for three.
26:27Nicely played.
26:29Nice way to get off the mark as well.
26:31Cut away and gone for four.
26:46Big shot.
26:48It was short and I saw it early and planted it on the bank.
26:52Oh, that's interesting.
26:57Down on one day and he's out.
27:01Celebrations from the Englishman.
27:03They are very, very happy with this.
27:05Archer is well and truly in this game and they've got the captain.
27:09Super C goes for 20, 62 for four.
27:12Nicely worked.
27:17Good shot.
27:17Good stuff in front of Dawson.
27:20Really well played down the ground for four.
27:25Last chance for England to pick up a wicket today.
27:32Keeps that out.
27:33So that's it.
27:33That's time.
27:34Another eventful day of test match cricket.
27:36Van der Dusen has done very nicely.
27:38OK, there's a look at the match summary.
27:41South Africa, 284.
27:43England, 181.
27:44Philander, the chief destroyer there.
27:46Four for 16.
27:47Ridiculously economical as well.
27:49Rabada picking up three.
27:51So a lead of 103 after South Africa and England.
27:55A bat at one.
27:55South Africa now, 72 for four.
27:58And Artis picked up a couple and got himself in the game.
28:00And South Africa lead by 175 at this stage.
28:04Yeah, very good.
28:05How are you?
28:06Very good, thanks.
28:07Feeling strong?
28:08Yeah, good, good.
28:08A mere 14 and a bit overs?
28:10Just a tad bit.
28:12Obviously we're nicely out there today.
28:14So yeah, feeling good.
28:15Well, you bowled a great line.
28:16And that has always been the strength of yours.
28:19Yeah, I think it was a little bit in the wicket for us.
28:21And I think, you know, the more simpler you kept it,
28:23the more rewarding it became at the back end there.
28:24So yeah, I think, you know, we just had to keep it really simple.
28:27I think we also gave him a few, I felt, you know, just after lunch there.
28:31But I pulled it back nicely again.
28:33In general, how do you feel?
28:35How strong are you?
28:36How fit are you?
28:37Do you feel the niggles more as you're a little older?
28:40I'm actually feeling really good, to be quite honest with you.
28:42You've got to knock that retirement on ahead.
28:45Yeah, we'll see about it.
28:47And the pitch and everything, I mean, it's still offering, isn't it?
28:50Yeah, I think that's the one thing, you know, when you come up here,
28:53there's always a little something.
28:54Probably a little bit more than, you know, what we're accustomed to.
28:57Because normally, day one is a little bit spicy,
28:59and then it sort of flattened out.
29:00But I think this one is just having spice, you know, for both or two days already.
29:05A bit expensive today, weren't you?
29:07Just a wee bit, eh, Polly?
29:11You went for a boundary there, two in a row at one stage.
29:13I mean, what was going on?
29:14But now, talking about the surface, I mean, your great skills,
29:18your examination of people hitting that area.
29:21Do you feel that it's bouncing more,
29:24or that there's just a more sideways movement than normal?
29:26I think, yeah, just probably the bounce here.
29:29I didn't feel it went massive sideways.
29:32I got the ball to swing up front a little bit.
29:34But after that, I just, you know, really honed in on probably an off-stump line,
29:37and obviously got a few to bounce, and, you know, got a few edges.
29:40And then two for eight, who convinces you to change ends?
29:44My captain, I need to have a word with him, Polly.
29:46Do you have an end you prefer, yes?
29:49Yeah, I mean, after Dale.
29:50You know, Dale always preferred, you know, obviously at the stadium end.
29:54After him, I really took over from this end, and, yeah, really preferred it.
29:57It's a bit of a reach there, though, but, yeah, pretty good to ball from that side.
30:00Welcome, one and all, wherever you may be.
30:17A cloudy morning here at Supersport Park in Centurion.
30:22Day number three in this first Test match.
30:25This is a look at the summary.
30:27It was England's Joe Root who won the toss and decided that his side would field first at the start.
30:34284 South Africa got to, and that was courtesy of Quintin de Kock and scintillating 95.
30:41England, 181 all out, Denly with 50, and Vernon Philander with that surgical precision was fantastic.
30:50Four for 16.
30:53South Africa are now 72 for four in their second innings, and they lead by 175 runs.
30:59Got him, changed the length, pulled it back, reviewed straight away by Anrich Nokia.
31:10Oh, there's daylight between it, yeah, there's daylight.
31:13Well, that ends well, the correct decision, not out.
31:22Gone for the big booming drive.
31:25It's gone for four, but off the outside edge.
31:29Thick outside edge, a boundary that went down to third man in the last over from Sam Curran,
31:36and another one this time off Anderson.
31:43There is an on drive, and actually a well-timed one.
31:46That's raced to the boundary.
31:52That might be out.
31:54Leg stompers it hitting.
31:55Ooh, I think England might well review that.
31:59Will have hit him in line, that'll be okay.
32:03Here we go.
32:06Well, England retained the review because of the umpire's call,
32:09so they still have two, and I think that was worth the ask.
32:12That's wide of Ben Stokes flying to his right side.
32:20Oh, and he lies almost desolate.
32:28Well, there's the shot of the morning, and it comes from the night watchman.
32:30Another, almost a carbon copy.
32:37Beautiful body shape and transfer of weight.
32:40Brilliant from Rassifanadosa, and this has been a really important rock from a number of occasions.
32:51Certainly appreciated by the crowd here, more so by his teammates.
32:57Rassifanadosa will know only too well.
33:00He's nowhere near finished.
33:06That's away, and it's four runs.
33:08That's superbly done by Nakia this time.
33:11Rassifanadosa now.
33:13Oh, that's worth a shout, maybe.
33:17Up goes that finger.
33:19Celebration for Marcher.
33:20Now, Rassifanadosa is walking down straight away.
33:22The question will be, was it going down leg?
33:25But they have decided to send it upstairs.
33:27They've got him.
33:31They've got him.
33:32He goes for 51, 153 for five.
33:39Got underneath that, and he said that for six.
33:41What a shot that is.
33:43Not a bad way to get off the mark.
33:48Goes again.
33:49As of the same result, as a smile from Archer.
33:52It's a wry smile, because it is the same result.
33:55Six more runs to the cock.
34:00Got hold of that one.
34:03Proper shot.
34:10Well, finally.
34:13Just managed to get a bit of bat and paddle onto that one.
34:17Very simple catch.
34:20Very valuable 40.
34:21170 for six.
34:25That's four.
34:30Well, that was absolutely nailed.
34:34Edged and gone.
34:36That man usually gets things happening, Ben Stokes.
34:39Whether it's with bat or ball.
34:41This is a good little spell for England.
34:42Two wickets in a short space of time.
34:44Seven down, four South Africa.
34:46Victoria Pretorius goes for seven.
34:53Well, that wasn't short, but it went.
34:56It does nonetheless.
34:57That applause around the ground.
35:07For the 300 lead.
35:09That's how South Africa have just achieved.
35:11That's slightly short.
35:16He's picked it up very early indeed.
35:18And he's hammered that away.
35:19Fine shot again from Philander.
35:21Beautiful stuff.
35:25Lovely driving for Vernon Philander.
35:27Particularly off the ball just before that one.
35:29Now there's a little noise there.
35:36Cock looks like he's just going to walk off.
35:38Yeah, he's not waiting for the decision.
35:41Ben Stokes pitching the ball up again.
35:44Gets the breakthrough.
35:45He has two now.
35:47He's gone for 34.
35:49It's 2.23.
35:54Oh, yes.
35:55Oh, what a shot.
35:57He'd have absolutely loved that Maharaj.
36:04Well, there's the hope.
36:08Oh, it's such a good tactic.
36:10I think Sankaran knew that that was going to be a very simple catch.
36:12He just wandered under it.
36:15Took the wicket.
36:17Got rid of Maharaj.
36:18He's got Curran bold Archer for 11.
36:20It's 2.50 for nine.
36:25There's the talent we talk about.
36:27Beautiful.
36:36What a swing of the back that is.
36:38And what a result.
36:40And what a cricketer.
36:41Philander's on 46.
36:44And that is out.
36:45That's a fantastic catch by Bairstow.
36:48Leaping Salmon-like to finish the innings.
36:51That's a boost.
36:52Gets rid of Vernon Philander, who doesn't make it to another test match.
36:5650.
36:57Sam Curran gets his wicket as the summary of the game.
37:00284 and 272.
37:02England 181, needing 376 to win the game.
37:07They're going to have to play extraordinarily well to do so.
37:10And that is a fine stroke.
37:18Nicely played by Burns.
37:19That'll give him a lot of confidence.
37:20He's got enough bad on that to go down to third man for four.
37:33Oh, he's dropped it.
37:34Almost.
37:35Almost.
37:36That was the early we get that they were hoping for.
37:39Healthy Edge launches himself away.
37:42Almost perfectly between the two of them.
37:47Chuck.
37:48Picked it off.
37:50That's test match cricket for you.
37:52Gone fine, very fine.
37:59Four runs.
38:08I can tell you one thing he doesn't want to do his ball there to Rory Burns.
38:11That's the third time that Burns has clipped him away through mid-wicket for four.
38:16It's a strong area off his hip and he'll get four more.
38:29Good shot.
38:31Strong shot.
38:33Fine result on the end.
38:37One opens the faceguarded between backward points and
38:41Gully and brings up the 50.
38:42A well-deserved, well-played 50 for Burns.
38:46Sixth career 50, he's got two hundreds to go with it.
38:49But in the context of the game, of the tour,
38:51that was a massively important start to this knock.
38:56That is a fine drive.
38:57That is nicely played.
38:58We saw one of these early in the innings and that is just as good.
39:03Really good work from Burns off the bowling robata.
39:09Sibley just knocked him away behind Squire.
39:11It's a fast outfield.
39:12The run rate has been high today.
39:19That's out, caught and bowled.
39:23Sibley going just a touch hard at the ball.
39:27Great joy around Supersport Park.
39:30He's gone for 29.92 for one.
39:38Well, it's a nice bold move into the ball.
39:40Credit to Burns that there would be a temptation to leave anything outside of Stump alone.
39:44I've kissed.
39:49Couldn't see it.
39:50That square leg went the wrong way.
39:52It was short.
39:52It was there for the taking.
39:54That's punched away.
39:58Slightly dragged down by Pretorius.
40:00Opens the face.
40:02And a welcome boundary for Denny.
40:03Gets him to double figures.
40:04The end of day number three.
40:15And what a test match it has been to this point.
40:19So this is where the match stands then.
40:21It's the first test match.
40:23284 plays 181.
40:25In South Africa, 272 in their second inning.
40:29Set England 376 to win.
40:32And they're doing it nicely, England.
40:34First part done.
40:35Openers doing well, putting on 92.
40:38And they finished day three.
40:40121 for one.
40:42They need 255 more.
40:45Can't wait to see how it all goes tomorrow.
40:49It's always weird interviewing someone you've never met before.
40:52How are you?
40:53Nice to see you.
40:55First up, what a thing.
40:56Test match cricket.
40:57Enjoying it?
40:58Yeah, I'm loving it.
40:59It's nice to be, especially in South Africa as well.
41:03It's a great feeling with the crowd and everything here.
41:06So I'm really enjoying it.
41:07Now, in the first innings, you would have thought it was easier to bowl on these pitches than those
41:10in India.
41:11But in the second innings, the pitches seem to flatten out a bit.
41:13Is that fair?
41:14Yeah, definitely.
41:16We expected it probably to be a little bit worse than it is at this stage.
41:20So we'll just see tomorrow what's happening, maybe different conditions again,
41:25and see how the wicket will play.
41:27Can you put your finger on why?
41:29I've got no idea.
41:30No, okay.
41:31I'm thinking it's the sun.
41:32We've got to wait for the sun tomorrow.
41:33If the sun comes out and bakes, I think it might.
41:35But the lack of sun wouldn't improve the pitch from yesterday, surely?
41:40If there's heat, if it's really hot, the cracks will open up.
41:43No, no, I understand that.
41:44But I mean, yesterday it did a lot, didn't it?
41:46Yeah, it did, yeah.
41:47But it's during the day.
41:49So once it's been rolled and then after an hour or two,
41:52it tends to start to get hot and then start to misbehave.
41:54So I think we'll have to wait and see tomorrow.
41:56We'll put our theory to the test.
41:57Yeah, have you come in with good rhythm in this inning?
42:00Certainly in the second part of the first innings,
42:02when you switched about around the wicket and got a bit of shape away from the left handers.
42:06I thought you had fantastic rhythm.
42:08Yeah, I've been feeling good the last two, three weeks after the T20, the Mzanzi we had.
42:16When I got the red ball again, it just felt like the rhythm is there.
42:18And one or two small adjustments that I might have made.
42:21And yeah, it's just, it's feeling good at this moment.
42:23Where's this game now?
42:24Because it was so much your game for the taking and it's now so much more evil.
42:30Yeah, I think we still, we're feeling very positive.
42:33We're in a good position, I think.
42:35Like I said, if conditions are, goes our way tomorrow,
42:39maybe the sun comes out, whatever it might be, then it could go in our favour.
42:44And a little help there for Kejav as well, which helps.
42:47Yeah, 100%.
42:48Well, great to talk to you.
42:49We hope you're a wicket-taker for South Africa tomorrow.
42:53Thank you very much for giving us your time.
42:54Thank you very much.
42:55Thanks for having me.
42:56Good to see you on board and going well.
42:57Terrific.
42:58Thank you, Henry.
43:14Good morning and welcome to day number four here at Supersport Park.
43:18It's the first test match between South Africa and England.
43:23The final innings of the test match.
43:26England looking to chase down a score, a rather huge score.
43:303-7-6 is what they were set and they require 255 more.
43:35Did well yesterday in the opening partnership putting on 92 Sibley and Burns.
43:43And Burns has gone to 77. 77 not out overnight.
43:47Key man must start again and we'll hope that Denley can stay with him for some time.
43:53And the rest of their order can get those 255 more required to win.
43:58Off the edge squared him up at four runs.
44:11Shot.
44:12Shot.
44:12Oh yes, what a shot.
44:16Fantastic.
44:20Prize of catch it.
44:21This should be taken.
44:23It's comfortably taken.
44:24That is an important wicket.
44:26That is a big wicket for South Africa.
44:27Nokia into the attack and he's done it.
44:30Burns has played well but he's got to go.
44:32First wicket of the day.
44:34Burns played nicely.
44:3684, 139 for two.
44:46Didn't know where that was.
44:47He had no idea Nokia.
44:48It didn't matter.
44:48I don't think too much.
44:54Good stroke.
44:55Not for the first time.
44:57Denley into position quickly.
44:58You can't bowl there with that field.
45:05Root is excellent off the back foot through the offside.
45:11That's LBW has to be.
45:13Yes it does.
45:17Well at the far end Root is just signalling to Joe Denley that he thinks it might be sliding down.
45:22So don't be surprised if Denley reviews.
45:24That's clipping.
45:27I think it's clipping too, yeah.
45:30Yep.
45:31It's the wicket they wanted.
45:34Now he's done for 31.
45:35He's proud of his efforts.
45:37158 for three.
45:43That's a really good shot.
45:45The control was outstanding there from Root.
45:47That's a wonderful way to start after the break.
45:50Oh that's cracked away.
45:55Very good shot in front of square.
45:57Nicely played by Root.
45:58He plays that so well.
46:04It's nicely worked.
46:06Plenty of gaps out there.
46:09That's going to go.
46:10Nicely timed.
46:12Down the hill almost.
46:13Another boundary.
46:14It's nicely hit by Stokes.
46:21Went very quickly for four.
46:26Down the ground.
46:26Open the blade over the top.
46:27And he's got four more.
46:30Yeah smart cricket from Stokes.
46:31That's short and wide.
46:39And it's been hammered for four.
46:41So that's a very good over for England.
46:43Brings up the 200 now for England.
46:45201 for three.
46:49It's got him.
46:50What a comeback.
46:51Look at this celebration.
46:52Captain will join him very soon.
46:54And they are Cocker Hoop.
46:56The bonus of the inside edge.
46:58Onto the stumps.
46:59He's picked up his second of the innings.
47:01And the South African captain is stoked.
47:03Ben's on his way.
47:04204 for four.
47:09Yep.
47:11Four ball.
47:12Short wide.
47:14And Bairstow can just throw the hands at that.
47:18Pays the new ball.
47:23Shot.
47:24Beautifully played.
47:30Off the edge and gone.
47:32Double Nelson does it.
47:35Rabada.
47:37And the swing and the new ball did for Johnny Bairstow.
47:40Playing away from his body.
47:42And Johnny Bairstow goes on the verge of drinks.
47:46It's 222 for five.
47:52Beautiful timing.
47:53No danger of the bottom hand taking over there.
48:01It's all classic classic back cut.
48:05One from the history books.
48:10Noise and a catch and the finger as well.
48:13He struck again.
48:14He came into the attack earlier today.
48:15Picked up a really important wicket.
48:17And now he has got a huge wicket.
48:20Root goes for 48.
48:22You can see the frustration.
48:23232 for six.
48:26Nokia now.
48:30Finds that little gap.
48:32In between the gully and the third slip.
48:34And goes for four.
48:39That's solid.
48:40That's a very good shot indeed from Butler.
48:43That's beautifully played.
48:48Short delivery.
48:49Two men back.
48:50It's not going to bother Butler too much.
48:52He just pounds that for six.
48:58Slice that away.
49:00Over the top.
49:00Back with a square.
49:01Goes for four.
49:09There's a nick and another catch.
49:10And another wicket.
49:12Rabada has struck again.
49:14Curran is now on his way.
49:15So this is really good work with his second new ball from South Africa.
49:19The dangerous Curran goes for nine.
49:222.51 with him.
49:27He's away.
49:27Off the mark.
49:29Chase is on.
49:30Hamza it is.
49:33And he assists over the rope.
49:35Flutter Dawson takes the catch.
49:41Norcare has picked up another wicket.
49:43Revenge for Norcare.
49:45It's a really good performance by South Africa now.
49:48They've got their eighth.
49:49Archer gone.
49:50England eight down.
49:51South Africa two wickets away.
49:54Norcare again.
49:56Short delivery first up.
49:57I guess which is generally what happens these days.
50:00Hitting the pitch really hard.
50:04It climbed on broad.
50:05And that was glove visor.
50:07Maybe a combination of.
50:13Stepping aside and just whipping that away out of the middle.
50:18It's gone high.
50:24Who's getting underneath that one?
50:28Catch has been taken.
50:28Pretorius it is.
50:30That's the ninth now.
50:31Another wicket.
50:32This time to Rabada.
50:33He's now got three in the second dig.
50:35And they are just one wicket away now.
50:38As Jimmy Anderson makes that long lonely walk down the steps.
50:46Pulled him.
50:48Rabada with a fourth.
50:52South Africa with victory.
50:54England 268 all out.
50:58It's a sweet victory for South Africa.
51:01After five losses on the balance.
51:04Means a whole lot.
51:07In a new chapter.
51:09This then is the summary of this first test match.
51:12South Africa put in.
51:14Got 284 courtesy Quinton de Kock.
51:17It's 95 runs off.
51:18128 goals.
51:20Curran was good.
51:20Very good.
51:21Four for 58.
51:22England in their first innings.
51:24181 all out.
51:26Vernon Philander.
51:27Surgical.
51:28With his precision with the new ball.
51:30Four for 16.
51:31And miserly as well.
51:33Then in the second inning.
51:34South Africa 272 just went further and further ahead.
51:38A first half century in test match cricket on debut for Rossi van der Dusen.
51:43Five wickets for Joffre Archer who is getting back in terms of form.
51:47England held and held with South Africa probing.
51:50268 all out.
51:52South Africa by 107.
51:55Faf, that's got to be pleasing for you in so many ways.
52:00Yeah, we needed that Hazy.
52:02Obviously, the last couple of months as a test team has been tough for us.
52:06But we worked really hard in this week building up to the test.
52:09And I thought it was a very, very good test match.
52:11Two teams fighting really hard all the way.
52:15And today's effort was incredible.
52:16Just by a barless making sure we can keep that rate down all the time.
52:20And then investing and the wickets came towards the end.
52:22You had a chance to go upstairs to the change room.
52:25I bet you've got a pretty happy coach up there.
52:27Got a happy everyone, Hazy.
52:30Haven't won a test match in a while.
52:31So, as I said for us, it's the start of a new chapter.
52:36We want to make sure we're improving as a test team again.
52:39We want to go up to better things again.
52:43And this is just a start.
52:44We know that's going to be a long journey to get there.
52:45But we'll make sure we keep working hard and putting in the right things.
52:50Let's just look at a couple of specifics.
52:52Vernon Philander in that first inning was just quite ridiculous.
52:55Yeah, the bowling this whole test match was very good.
52:57But I thought, yes, like that first test, the first day or two.
53:01I actually thought day one and two was probably the most in it for the bowlers.
53:05Both teams bowled really well.
53:07And then yesterday when the clouds came out and the wicket got a bit slower,
53:11was probably the best day to the bat.
53:12And even today, you know, the sun generally at Supersport Park
53:16makes it go up and down.
53:17And that's when it gets at its hardest.
53:18And I thought the last two days was better for batting.
53:22And the bowling to come through the way they did in the last two days,
53:25as I said, to to keep a very, very strong England team to 2.6 for pretty much the whole day
53:32means that we we did the basics really well, made sure that they didn't go anywhere.
53:36Our plan was to just keep it tight, keep it tight.
53:39And hoping that the new ball will do the talk.
53:42And that's what happened.
53:42Yeah, it must be nice for you to have the likes of Rabada and Nokia to take that second new ball.
53:48Yeah, I thought Anrich Nokia was really good.
53:50Obviously, we expect that from Cage.
53:52He's he's a world class performer for us.
53:56But Anrich in his first test at home, you know, probably not someone that you would think
54:02that has got a lot of control.
54:03We know he's got a lot of pace, but I thought he bowled with great control,
54:07executed the right lens to different batters and bowled with some real good pace as well.
54:11So real good signs for the test team moving forward.
54:14Obviously, we've lost quite a few bowlers and Vern deciding that he wants to go move on to greener
54:20pastures. We need we need new bowlers to step up to the to the to the platform.
54:25Now, you know, we've had Mourne and Dale and the guys like that cagey step up
54:29when there was old bowlers butting at the time.
54:31And now we're going to need one or two more to come to the fort.
54:35OK, time for me now to announce the man of the match as adjudicated by the commentators
54:39and didn't take us long actually to come up with the name Quintin de Kock.
54:44Quintin will receive his trophy from tobacco.
54:48Quintin scored 95, six catches, a record six catches in the first innings, 34 in no time
54:54and eight catches overall was two in the second dig.
54:56But let's just talk about the start of this game.
54:59I mean, you came with the crease four down, not that many on the board.
55:03So it was a little bit of a tricky situation.
55:04You played your natural game.
55:06It didn't take you long to take control.
55:07Yeah, I think obviously the situation to walking out
55:12to understand how it's going to go about things.
55:15I thought they bowled actually very well in that weekend
55:19and they didn't make a struggle.
55:21But, you know, it's just nice to get out there and contribute some runs,
55:23especially on the teams.
55:24We have a tough situation.
55:26And yeah, I'm just happy that we got on the line.
55:28And important also those 95 runs.
55:30You missed out on 100, which is most unfortunate for you.
55:32But 95 runs in that first innings, I mean, that's just a natural game.
55:38You know, some people were thinking, OK, maybe you're not going to play that.
55:41You're going to play a little bit differently.
55:42But no, you just want to play a natural game and get on with it.
55:45Well, look, to be honest, when I went out there,
55:47I was thinking I should live well and, you know, get into that sort of rhythm.
55:51But I think it's just I just went with whatever was going at the moment.
55:57You know, my mind was doing all sorts of things to me.
56:00I just wanted to get going and just find a rhythm and then just stick to the rhythm.
56:03That is all.
