00:01Bradley and Barney are back.
00:03Come on!
00:03And this time they're heading further from home than ever before.
00:07Australia!
00:08Wow!
00:12This Aussie adventure kicked off in Australia's iconic Urzats capital, Sydney.
00:17From there it's full throttle north past the sun-soaked beaches of the Gold Coast
00:21before diving headfirst into the dusty wilds of the Queensland outback.
00:25Finally, ending in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.
00:29As ever, Barney's embracing the culture and chasing thrills.
00:33And Brad?
00:35Well, he's just questioning the life choices that led him here.
00:38He's caught to keep hitting me in the aisle.
00:40And trying to survive it.
00:41Guys, I really don't want to do this.
00:42One, two.
00:48Don't blame it on the sunshine
00:50Don't blame it on the moonlight
00:52Don't blame it on the good times
00:55Blame it on the boogie
00:56Don't blame it on the sunshine
00:58Don't blame it on the moonlight
01:01Don't blame it on the good times
01:03What a cheer.
01:04That's enough to wake you up.
01:06Right.
01:06Here we are, Dad.
01:08Yeah.
01:08It's the Gold Coast.
01:09Gold Coast.
01:10I didn't realise it was going to be like this, you know.
01:12You know what this reminds me a bit like? Miami.
01:14Yes.
01:15Well, actually, this is a man-made city.
01:18Really?
01:19Man-made.
01:19Made by men.
01:20Do you know what?
01:21I always thought the Gold Coast was built by beavers.
01:25Brown and Barney have left the rural town of Thalon,
01:28venturing east to the iconic city of the Gold Coast.
01:32Earning its name in the 1950s from a rapid growth in real estate and tourism,
01:37the area is famous for its sunny coastline, rolling surf and world-class beaches.
01:42Come on, you've got to tell me where we're going and what we're doing.
01:45We're going to go out-rigger canoeing.
01:47Yeah, okay.
01:47So I thought we'd give it a go.
01:48I mean, just look at that ocean there.
01:50Deadly, though.
01:51You know, you've got sharks, you've got boxed jellyfish.
01:53Do you know the things about boxed jellyfish?
01:55You know how not to get stung?
01:56How?
01:56Don't open the box.
01:58Why do I even bother?
02:00Australia has the most fatal shark attacks.
02:04This is not very comforting, Barnes.
02:06Yeah, but don't worry.
02:07The sharks won't get you.
02:08Although, that being said, there's over 180 different shark species in Australia.
02:12Barnes, it's very easy for you to say,
02:13don't worry, the sharks ain't going to get you.
02:14What are you going to hold a sign up saying, we're filming, please don't bite?
02:17Don't be ridiculous.
02:19Well, you've got bigger fish to fry now, Brad.
02:22Outrigger canoes have been used for over 4,000 years,
02:25originally a way for Polynesian tribes to fish and move around the Pacific Ocean.
02:30The side support float keeps it stable in the rough waters.
02:36Look at this, Dad.
02:37Oh, my goodness.
02:37Look at these boats.
02:39You must be Lee.
02:40How are you?
02:40Welcome to the Gold Coast.
02:41Thank you, mate.
02:42Thanks for having us.
02:43Do you guys race quite frequently?
02:44Yeah, we do.
02:45We love it.
02:46And it's great for all ages.
02:48The oldest paddler in Australia is 93.
02:51Really?
02:51Yeah, still racing.
02:53No.
02:53You'll be all right then, don't they?
02:55Yes.
02:56Will we be able to race?
02:57We can race against each other.
02:59Yes, that's what I love to hear.
03:00Okay.
03:00We've invited some of the local clubs to come and join us,
03:03and we're going to do a four-kilometre time trial.
03:05Four kilometres?
03:06Four kilometres.
03:07In a canoe.
03:09Nothing's ever plain sailing though, is it, Brad?
03:12Today, the boys must row two kilometres out into the turbulent Pacific Ocean
03:16before looping back to shore and collecting a flag to secure victory.
03:20So, after a brief training session with head coach Glenn...
03:24One.
03:24Stroke.
03:25Go together.
03:26Yeah.
03:26Go back.
03:27One.
03:28All right, I'm listening to Ian.
03:30Despite the bickering, the boys are deemed ready to race.
03:33Thankfully, in separate canoes.
03:35We're the only ones wearing life jackets.
03:37Yeah, but that's good for me.
03:40All right, everyone, ready?
03:42Three, two, one, green flag!
03:51Dad!
03:54All right, Team Logan, jump!
04:02Come on.
04:03Nice work, honey.
04:05Brad and his team are starting to pull away from the pack.
04:08How you going back there, Brad?
04:09Oh!
04:10You're doing a great job!
04:12Hup!
04:13Oh!
04:16F***!
04:16Nearly lost it.
04:19Whoa!
04:20The size of these waves!
04:25Oh, a few bumps here!
04:28Whoa!
04:30Let's go!
04:32Yeah!
04:33Nice!
04:34Oh, my God!
04:35Oh, Brad!
04:36Look at this one!
04:37Jesus Christ!
04:40Oh, my God!
04:43All the teams are struggling with the nine-foot waves.
04:47But as the boats approach the halfway turn, Bradley's team is leaving Barney's in their wake.
04:54Whoo!
04:54Come on!
04:56Are we on our way home now?
04:57Yeah, halfway!
04:59We've left Barney in the dust!
05:01Let's go!
05:01Only one more boat!
05:02Come on!
05:09Come on, everybody!
05:12Come on in!
05:13Bobby's gonna show you how...
05:14With one kilometre to go, unbelievably Brad, in his first ever outriggers race, is in a fight for victory.
05:21Come on!
05:22This is the best outriggering team I'd ever outriggered with!
05:25Brad's team is in the groove as they open up the lead.
05:29I wanna show you how I'm swill tonight, now, baby, swill...
05:33Oh!
05:34Come on!
05:35It's a flag!
05:36Yes, push!
05:37Come on!
05:38Come on, baby!
05:40Come on, guys!
05:41What are we right there?
05:42Which flag?
05:43Which one?
05:44What happened there?
05:44What about that flag?
05:46Oh!
05:47Oh!
05:48Oh!
05:49Oh!
05:51Mark this in the history books, Brad's team has beaten Barneys!
05:56I can only, on behalf of my team, it's been...
05:59Oh, mate!
06:00I can't believe you won!
06:01I know!
06:02I just want to say to everyone at home...
06:07At last, I am a champion!
06:10Thank you so much indeed!
06:12Do you know what?
06:12Fair play, put it there!
06:14You beat me fair and square!
06:16What a team!
06:17Guys, thank you so much!
06:19That was so much fun!
06:20That was absolutely brilliant!
06:22Thank you!
06:22Thank you!
06:25You're going to be so smug for the rest of this day!
06:27Smug like you cannot see!
06:33I'm going to feel that tomorrow, mate!
06:35I can't believe you won as well!
06:36Yeah, but you've won everything else, Spars!
06:38Yeah, as I should!
06:40Yeah, but you can't win anything!
06:42Sometimes, in life, a little rain must fall!
06:47Here's a good thing!
06:48Go on then!
06:49One of my favourite ever Australians!
06:51Skippy!
06:51He's not an actor!
06:53Skippy!
06:54He became more famous for what he did!
06:56Okay, his first initial is S!
06:59Skippy!
07:00And his surname begins with I!
07:03I?!
07:04Yeah!
07:04Do you give up?
07:06Steve Irwin!
07:07Oh, yeah!
07:08Steve Irwin!
07:09Mega!
07:09Australian conservationist!
07:10Proper legend!
07:12The reason I bring up Steve Irwin...
07:13Yeah?
07:14...is because we're going to Steve Irwin's Wildlife Hospital!
07:17Oh, are we?
07:17We are!
07:18We're going to see the work that they do there!
07:20Brilliant!
07:21In fact, to get in the mood, I'm going to read some true or false!
07:23Koala bears sleep for 18 hours a day!
07:27That is true!
07:28That is true!
07:29That means that for an average of a ten year lifespan, they're awake for just two and
07:33a half years!
07:34A bit like you!
07:35A bit like me!
07:38The boys are at Irwin's Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, one of the largest and busiest in
07:44the world, with nearly 10,000 animals treated every year.
07:48Steve Irwin changed Australian conservation forever, and that legacy is found throughout
07:53this hospital.
07:54Hiya!
07:55Hello!
07:55How are you going?
07:56Hello!
07:56How are you going?
07:58Lovely to meet you!
07:58Nice to see you!
07:59Welcome to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital!
08:01Thank you!
08:01We treat all native wildlife, and our aim is to treat and release back out into the
08:06wild where they belong.
08:07Oh, so what's happening right here now?
08:08There's a bird and a...
08:09Yes, and a turtle!
08:11So the vets and the nurses are looking at them and trying to fix their ailments.
08:14And so, this little turtle here, I believe, has a fractured shell.
08:18But they bite, right?
08:19They can.
08:19Turtles bite!
08:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
08:21Look at her pretty little face!
08:22I'm not sure it's pretty!
08:24But there you have it.
08:30This is our nursery.
08:32So we've got two types of possums here in Australia, both marsupials.
08:35This one's a ring-tailed possum, and then the other one is a brush-tailed possum.
08:39So this here is Rodney, and he's a common brush-tailed possum baby who's only five months old.
08:46Wow!
08:47He actually looks like a mini kangaroo or a mini...
08:49Well, yeah.
08:50A mini wallaby.
08:50They kind of do because I guess they're all marsupials.
08:53And that's their call.
08:54They're so bloody cute.
08:55I just love them.
08:56Yeah, he's so cute.
08:59This is Koala Flower, and she was actually hit by a car.
09:03It's a miracle that she survived.
09:04Yes, absolutely.
09:05And this is what they'd be doing in the wild.
09:07Just sleeping, and then at night they venture around, look for new trees to forage in, look
09:11for mates, and she's looking wonderful and she's nearly ready for release.
09:14Well, I've got to say, this has been brilliant.
09:17Yeah.
09:17Really great.
09:18Set travel's home.
09:19Thank you so much.
09:19See you flower.
09:20See you dot.
09:21Bye-bye.
09:22Cheers.
09:22Bye-bye.
09:23Bye-bye.
09:33Brad and Barnier in East Australia, exploring the stunning sun-drenched city of the Gold Coast.
09:39It's got electric boots.
09:41More as soon as you know it.
09:43You know I'm rather than I'm back to playing your horse.
09:49B-b-b-banny on the jet.
09:52Fantastic.
09:57Here we go.
09:58Australia versus the UK.
10:00Who consumes more meat per capita?
10:02Australia or the UK?
10:03Oh, Australia, definitely.
10:05Correct.
10:05Australia consumes 120 kilograms per person.
10:08Woo-hoo.
10:09The UK consumes 79 kilograms per person.
10:12Total number of Olympic gold medals, UK or Australia?
10:15But that has got to be the U-K.
10:18That is indeed the UK.
10:2076 of Australia's Olympic gold medals have been for swimming.
10:24Have they really?
10:25Yeah.
10:25Well, listen, we've got something exciting today.
10:27We're going swimming.
10:28Not in the sea though, Barn.
10:29In the sea with all the sharks and the boxes.
10:31No, we're not, no.
10:32No.
10:32We're doing synchronised swimming today.
10:34Oh, I love synchronised swimming.
10:38The boys are en route to the home of the Gold Coast Mermaids, where many Olympic athletes train.
10:44The team are current national champions, but today face their biggest challenge yet.
10:49Teaching Brad and Barney Walsh.
10:53Ready?
10:55Looking good, boys.
10:57Hi.
10:58Hi, Marina.
10:58I'm Barney.
10:59How do you look, Marina?
11:00I love it.
11:01Yeah?
11:01I love it.
11:02I think this is definitely your colour.
11:04Yes, thank you.
11:05Well, guys, before you hop in, we would need to check your flexibility.
11:11Okay.
11:13Wow, this is pretty good flexibility, I can tell you.
11:15He's very flexible.
11:16Look, that's as far as I can go.
11:18Okay, let's go up, let's do the shoulder.
11:20One forward, one backwards.
11:22One.
11:22Oh, look at you.
11:24Two.
11:24Yep.
11:25Yep.
11:27That's it.
11:28That's one of those things.
11:29That's really tricky.
11:30Yes.
11:32That's for your coordination.
11:34Can you point your toes?
11:36Actually, this is really good.
11:39You nearly whacked me off.
11:41Shut up.
11:42I got scared.
11:44Shut up.
11:44That's good.
11:46That is perfect.
11:47After a quick warm-up, it's time to get thrown in at the deep end.
11:51I'm burning!
11:55So, this is pretty much what you guys are going to try now.
11:58One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
12:02Yeah?
12:02And then spin around 180.
12:05Touch, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
12:07And then stretch, touch inside.
12:09And then tuck.
12:12You're joking me!
12:14Let's tuck it.
12:15Go on your stomach, face and hold.
12:17And you hold him under the knees.
12:19Under the knees.
12:20That's it.
12:21Up, up.
12:21One, two, three.
12:26And holding.
12:27One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
12:30Push and under.
12:34Let's go.
12:35Ready and...
12:36Yep.
12:37Grab your arm.
12:38One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
12:40Go on your back, buddy.
12:42Yep.
12:45And start.
12:48They disappeared.
12:50Okay, boys.
12:50Are we good?
12:51Yeah.
12:52Hell yeah, sensation.
12:54All right, let's do the whole thing.
12:57Oh, shut it.
12:58With basic training over, there's nothing more to do than face the music.
13:01Time to sink or swim.
13:03And start.
13:14Synchronisation isn't the only thing artistic swimmers must perfect.
13:18As well as keeping in time and controlling their breath, athletes need flexibility, strength, coordination and endurance.
13:26All performed with an effortless smile.
13:54Yeah.
13:55Yeah, it's me.
13:55Now you're a Gold Coast Merman.
13:57Yeah.
13:58Pretty well.
14:00Gold Coast mermaids. Yeah? Amazing. What a day. Do you want a race? Do I want a race? Yeah, to
14:06the end. 100 percent. Come on then. Go!
14:14Oh, no!
14:23He's still beating me!
14:27That was exhausting. I'm exhausted. And my favourite part about all of that is that I've now got this.
14:33What have you got? So I don't have to smell you any more.
14:40Do you know what else Australia has to offer? Go on. Movies.
14:44The Gold Coast is known as the Hollywood of Australia.
14:50Elvis, Aquaman and Thor Ragnarok are some of the blockbusters filmed in the Gold Coast. Or, as it's known, Goldiewood.
14:59We're going to stunt school, Dad. Stunt school.
15:02We're going to meet a guy called Colin. He's going to give us a little bit of a lesson in
15:05stunts today.
15:07What?
15:08Approximately seven miles inland, near the eucalyptus forests of the Nerang National Park, Brad and Barney are heading to their
15:15final stop, Australia's leading stunt school.
15:20Right.
15:21Colin said to meet him here.
15:24Oh!
15:29Now that's how you make an entrance.
15:32What about that?
15:34Is he alright?
15:35There he is.
15:37Blimey.
15:37Hey, Colin.
15:38Hey, guys.
15:39Welcome.
15:40Thanks for having us.
15:41Welcome to Stunt Park.
15:42Welcome to Stunt Park.
15:43The most dangerous place on earth.
15:44I'm Barney.
15:45This is my dad, Brad.
15:46That was amazing, Colin.
15:48How did you get into stunts?
15:50Well, I was a martial arts champion, taekwondo champion back in the day.
15:54I met Chuck Norris.
15:55Right.
15:55And trained with him in Adelaide.
15:57And he invited me to Hollywood.
15:59I've been fortunate enough to work with some of Hollywood's greats.
16:02Yeah.
16:02Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone.
16:04Right.
16:04Bruce Willis.
16:06Yeah, right.
16:06That's cool.
16:07Spent about six years in Hollywood and then came back and set up the Stunt Academy,
16:11which is still going to this day 25 years later.
16:14So we're planning to get you up the tower and do pretty much what I did.
16:19There's a lot of safety procedures in place.
16:21Of course, yeah.
16:21But occasionally people do get injured.
16:23That won't happen today.
16:24We'll be alright.
16:24We haven't killed anyone for weeks.
16:25You'll be fine.
16:27That's comforting.
16:29Come on over here, guys.
16:30After a quick crash course from Colin...
16:31So it'll look like this.
16:33Up.
16:34Exhale, I'm landing.
16:35OK.
16:36Got that?
16:36Yep.
16:373, 2, 1, action.
16:39There we go.
16:40Barney's ready to head up the tower, much to Brad's surprise.
16:44Where are you going?
16:44Up the tower.
16:45Already?
16:46Yeah, I'm going to fall from that.
16:47What sort of training is that?
16:49We're going to seven and a half metres.
16:50Seven and a half.
16:51OK.
16:53It's high that, isn't it?
16:54Now it's very serious because if you don't get it right, you can really injure yourself
16:59badly.
16:59So you don't want to be coming in on your head.
17:01Yeah.
17:01It'll break your neck.
17:02You don't want to be coming in on your feet.
17:04It'll break your back.
17:05So nice and flat landing.
17:06Take a deep breath.
17:08Visualise a perfect fall.
17:10Yeah, I'm ready.
17:10And three, two, one, action.
17:16Great.
17:17That was tremendous.
17:19Great fall.
17:20Is that...
17:21Oh!
17:21Oh!
17:25Good stunt.
17:27Well done, Vance.
17:28Hey.
17:28Well done, mate.
17:29That was great.
17:29Well done, you.
17:30Thank you, thank you.
17:31Well done.
17:31We're about to do a stunt coordination.
17:33What's that?
17:34We're going to do a fight scene.
17:35Go get them.
17:37All right.
17:37The longest one-take fight scene in film history is a 77-minute sequence in Crazy Samurai.
17:43It took over seven years to choreograph and film.
17:48But with a sprinkling of TV magic, Barney's ready for his fight scene by the time he's at the top
17:54of the ladder.
18:16And cut.
18:21Yes!
18:21Wow, that was great, Bon.
18:23Oh, that was wicked.
18:24Absolutely brilliant.
18:24Brilliant. I love that. That was great fun.
18:27Hey, mate, you did really well. I think you should consider a career in stunts.
18:31Oh, that guy's cool. Brilliant. Well done, mate. Yeah.
18:34So now it's your turn. We're going to do something very special with you.
18:37And we've chosen the most dangerous of all stunts, the human torch fire burn.
18:42You're going to be set on fire.
18:47Ah, the classic human torch. A stunt that requires meticulous preparation.
18:53What do you think, Dad? Do you know what it was? I'm not too sure about it at the moment.
18:57Layers of specialised clothing are worn to prevent severe burns and fatal injury.
19:03Wow, it's a lot of layers. Because it keeps the flame that far away from your skin.
19:06OK. I don't know why I'm so compliant.
19:09Oh, my God.
19:15Once he's set alight, how do we put him out?
19:17So our objective is to smother the oxygen. Just smother you with wet blankets.
19:21We've got the hose and the fire extinguisher as backups.
19:24I absolutely am.
19:28If you ever have any problem, just yell out, hot, hot, hot, and go down.
19:34Palaclava goes on.
19:34And this stops you breathing the flames.
19:36The flames still could come higher, so we always make sure we're covered completely.
19:41Everyone set, safety.
19:44Applying fuel.
19:45The fuel used in the film industry burns at over 400 degrees C.
19:50Igniting.
19:51Three, two.
19:52Hang on. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
19:54Take some deep breaths.
19:56Jesus Christ.
19:58Sit.
20:00Igniting.
20:01Three, two, one.
20:04Action.
20:05You're alight.
20:06You're alight.
20:06I'm off.
20:08You're on fire.
20:09You're on fire.
20:10Ow, ow, ow.
20:16Just lift that up off his head and just...
20:18Dad, you're on fire.
20:19You're good.
20:21Well, I'll tell you what, it's burning me arse.
20:22Let's have that hose.
20:23Oh, my God, me arse is on fire.
20:25The clothing provides protection against the flame, but steam released inside the lairs during
20:30the stunt can cause incredible discomfort to the performer.
20:34Oh, my God, me arse is obviously on fire.
20:36Is that cooling down?
20:37Is it receding, the pain, or is it getting worse?
20:40No, it's getting hotter.
20:41It's getting hotter?
20:42You're in.
20:43Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.
20:44Is that in your head?
20:45No, no, it's actually on my arse.
20:47Oh, my God.
20:49Woo-hoo.
20:50Take some nice deep breaths.
20:52How was it?
20:53How do you feel?
20:53Well, to be honest with you, that was really quite...
20:58Quite frightening, do you know what I mean?
20:59Lucky it was not my arm, because then I'd have been in possession of a firearm.
21:04And, you know, and that would have been double trouble.
21:06That's right, that's right.
21:07No, you did well.
21:08You were great.
21:09Smashed it.
21:09Thank you, Barnes.
21:10God bless you.
21:11Cheers, Cole.
21:11Yeah, up you go.
21:12Yeah.
21:12Thank you, guys.
21:15There we go.
21:20Was it hot?
21:21Hot?
21:22Yeah.
21:22Are you joking?
21:23I'm still smoking now.
21:25And then all the steam from the wet, I think I've poached myself.
21:28Do you know where it hurts most?
21:30Where?
21:30Right under the cheek of me bum, near me nether regions.
21:35Oh, wow, wee, wow, woo, wow.
21:36Well, in that case, I've got a good song for us.
21:41Great balls of fire.
21:43I let you love, but I thought it was funny.
21:45You came along and me, honey.
21:48I've changed my mind.
21:50This hurts fine.
21:52It's just great balls of fire.
21:55Kisses the baby.
21:56Mmm, feels good.
22:00Hold me, baby.
22:03Well, I want to love you like I love you should.
22:07You're fine.
22:08So kind.
22:09Bye.
22:09Bye.
22:10Bye.
22:11Bye.
22:12Bye.
22:12You
