Messaging, work, shopping, entertainment — a lot depends on US technology. A day without ChatGPT, Microsoft, Amazon or Netflix shows how hard it is to make a switch.

00:02I wake up and automatically reach for my phone. Today there's no messages and no
00:07alarm. I managed to get up on time. Usually I check my WhatsApp and Instagram
00:12but that's not going to be possible today. Let's go to work. When I get a
00:23coffee I pay with an app. Today I'll pay in cash. No cash they only accept card
00:28payment. No coffee for me then. At the office the challenge grows. I can't use
00:36a computer or a laptop. It's all US tech. Luckily my camera operator is using a
00:44Japanese camera. At least we can still film this report. I also have to write
00:51my presentation cues in a different way today. I can't access my work emails or
00:56even message colleagues. Work feels pretty lonely today and unproductive. As I
01:03walk home I think about what I could do in the evening today. No series or
01:06listening to music. Instead I'll read a book and I'll have a lot more spare time
01:12without screens. Slowly I realize how many of my habits are built around US
01:17platforms. Without Apple, Google, Meta or Microsoft even basic tasks like checking
01:22directions suddenly become complicated. Honestly I never think about where the
01:27technology comes from. I just expect it to work. This isn't just about convenience.
01:33It's about digital dependence and how little choice we actually have. By the end
01:37of the day one thing is clear. Living without US tech is possible but it's
01:41definitely not easy.
