01:57Now, among the things, because I think one of the areas that I'm particularly curious is on your being an
02:06entrepreneur, because when we did our research, you were president of Mandawi Chamber of Commerce.

02:12And you successfully also run companies.
02:18But before we get into that, I'm also curious because the other piece that I also learned eventually is you
02:24decided to create your own name instead of relying on your very famous surname.
02:33Why is that so?
02:35Well, our family is quite small.
02:40My direct family, I would say, did not really start off on a well-off position, DJ.
02:47Although that's the impression. But continue, yes.
02:51My father, my parents got married early 70s.
02:56And my father started out as a bank employee.
02:59And then my mother was a housewife.
03:03And eventually decided to go into business.
03:06So she was supplying ornamental plants in the branches where my father was working in Banco, Filipino.
03:13So it was really a typical husband and wife team.
03:19And I've seen their struggles from how they started all the way up to how they have transitioned.
03:28And I came in.
03:31So the impact of my life that has really motivated and I would say shaped the way that I am
03:39now.
03:40So modesty aside, I was there.
03:48I was there to it.
03:49I'm the eldest in the family.
03:51So I was really there when everything unfolded, started and unfolded.
03:56At what particular point on the shaping that you said to yourself that,
04:05okay, my parents are now succeeding, but I still want to define my own success?
04:12At what point did that emerge?
04:15You know, when I was an elementary DJ, I used to walk from my school.
04:19I studied in St. Joseph's Academy and we lived in Labogon, in Doña Rosario Village.
04:26So that was a good, siguro three kilometer to five kilometer walk.
04:30Every day I would walk so that I could save on my allowance.

04:48So I would do that every day.
04:50And I've seen that, you know, there's things around me that I want to change.

05:10I became a scholar from first year high school all the way until I graduated in college.
05:19And that has also molded me to, I think, what I am right now.

05:45When I was in high school, I studied in an all-boys school in St. Carlos.
05:49And I would see that my classmates, some of my schoolmates were driving their cars.
05:55And I was riding the jeepney.
05:58I can't imagine.
05:59And I go to the St. Carlos, Maine to practice volleyball.
06:04So I would ride from St. Carlos Boys School to St. Carlos, Maine.
06:08Mag-jeepney ko.

06:19And then I would take the jeepney there.

07:10So most of our predecessors worked in the zone.
07:15And some went abroad.
07:17So our batch, there was a mass hiring for industrial engineering.
07:22So a lot of my classmates really went to Taiwan to work in a company.
07:28No, I think I heard about that.
07:30It's a computer.

07:34So I had a choice.
07:37So I chose to be in Cebu.
07:41But to find a job which pays good here in Cebu at that time, 1994, 1995, was challenging.

08:02So most multinational corporations would really favor those who are more, you would say, the hierarchy of karing education.
08:12So I tried applying.
08:16I had a stint with a bank.
08:18A very short stint.
08:20And then I said, you know, I'd like to help my mother because the janitorial services company that she started,
08:30I don't know if she wanted to open it, because she's already a couple of people, because she's already a
08:34labor-intensive business.
08:37So I thought I'd like to help my mother.
08:40And my father also, he was busy.
08:44He had his own business.
08:45He was into the financial services business.
08:49I wanted to help my mother.
08:52I didn't forget it.
08:59But it was still very informal at that time, DJ.
09:02It wasn't like now, the changes in the guidelines of the Department of Labor.
09:07First of all, I wanted to help my labor unrest.
09:11I was kind of upset that my parents had to manage a business.
09:17I started there.
09:18And there's no looking back.
09:22I did not demand for any salary or compensation.
09:25If I am successful in it, then you don't have to pay my compensation or pay my hatag.
09:33So without mentioning, it's a big deal.
09:35I was about to ask you about it.
09:37I started with $5,000 a month.
09:42I can tell, though, from the way you answered your question, that family is important to you.
09:47And in your previous interviews, I also gathered that you said this line, success is incomplete without family.
09:57So how did you learn this mindset?
10:02As I have mentioned, everything was really within the family.
10:07Everything that I have learned, everything that emotionally, mentally, psychologically.
10:17Because I've seen how my parents really started and really worked their way up.
10:24So I was motivated, I was motivated, I was inspired, there was one particular experience I had.

11:41My father went into politics, he became a councillor in Mandawi City.
11:45I became an SK chairman also when he was councillor.
11:49So I had the option really to be a politician at an early age or go into business.
11:55I chose to go into business.
11:56And we can say that you are a successful businessman or entrepreneur before you were a public servant, no?
12:07Success DJ, it's relative.
12:11Ako, I'm happy to what I have achieved in business.

12:15Ako, it doesn't mean that it is financial in nature.
12:23Ako to me, if you consider the struggles that you've had and how you overcame it.

12:54Some people are not able to see success because they look at it as a destination.
13:02But they don't, and to your point, they don't also realize how far they've already come from where they were,
13:11which is also a measure of success.

13:21And I think that's also how you started.
13:24If you base it on financial success, it's a bottomless pit.
13:30How much is enough for you to say that you are successful?

13:42How many stores, branches, is it enough for you to say that you are successful?
13:46Well, to me, it's a combination.
13:49But I gave more value on my internal process.

14:01If we don't have a business, I would even say that we are a first, second generation.
14:11I was still part of the first generation.
14:14As I've said, I was there when my parents all started it.
14:19So now, for our would-be entrepreneurs who are watching, the usual question is, which is harder?
14:28This is an entrepreneurial question.
14:31Which is harder to start a business or to sustain it when the competition is really tough?
14:40To me, both.

15:47And that takes time.
15:49And there's a lot of factors that, you have to build trust.
15:58Of course, you have to have a good product.
16:01Quality.
16:03And everything else.
16:05But then, you need to anchor it on a plan.
16:09A lot of the entrepreneurs, they're going to build one store, a very successful store, but you're only up to
16:19there.
16:20But you could actually scale up.
16:22Scale, supposedly, yeah.
16:23So, you plan it.
16:25Like, in the next five to ten years, where do I see my business?
16:30I've done that.
16:31In my very crude, because I did not have any business, formal business education to begin with.
16:39And I was in the school of hard knocks.
16:41And mind you, I've gone through a lot of failures.
16:47I've also, you know, gone through a lot of challenges.
16:53When I started, 1995, 1997, Asian financial crisis.
16:58It was followed again by another crisis in 2000, early 2000.
17:03We've never seen the light of day.
17:06But there were times that you mentioned about sustainability.
17:11Sustaining it is already success in itself.
17:14Going through the hard times.
17:15So, as long as you've survived, it was already success.
17:20Because if everybody else is failing, you're just maintaining.
17:25Now, the other piece also, because you've mentioned that you did not have necessarily the, you were not schooled in
