00:26I hope you have a lot of questions.
00:27While they're having their lunch, we are their entertainment.

00:34So you are now part of the leadership,
00:40the executive team that's leading an organization
00:45that's specializing on energy,
00:49which is traditionally dominated by men.
00:53So how did you or what were the experiences
00:57that shaped you to be where you are today?
01:01Thank you, Moises, for that very astounding first question.
01:06So anyways, afternoon, everyone.
01:08So my name is Bridget Lim,
01:10and I'm part of Topline Business Development Corporation.
01:12So we specialize in fuel.
01:15So I think when I started,
01:18I wasn't really interested in the fuel industry.
01:20But my brother, Eric Lim,
01:23who happens to be the CEO of Topline,
01:25a few years back,
01:26I think this was over many years ago,
01:29he invited me to join Topline.
01:30And so we started,
01:32basically, it was buy and sell.
01:34And then eventually, through vertical integration,
01:36we acquired our own tankers.
01:38And then now we have retail stations.
01:40So I think to answer your question lang,
01:42although it is a predominantly male industry,
01:45there are also things that women can bring to the table also.
01:48So it's not just being a gender role situation.
01:52It's actually being how women and men can work together
01:56for the success of the company.
01:57And I like your point about how men and women can work together.
02:02But for us to just help the viewers understand also,
02:06just in case they have questions around this,
02:08because this is among the frequently asked questions,
02:12especially in National Women's Month.
02:16So what experiences or traits that women actually bring into leadership
02:22that men, unfortunately, underestimate in general?
02:27In general.
02:29Actually, I think biologically and physiologically,
02:33both genders are predispositioned to certain roles, right?
02:36So women, we're more nurturing,
02:38whereas men are more steadfast and firm.
02:41So I think it's not just,
02:44it's not how men,

03:53So what are the leadership principles,
03:55man,
03:55that guides your decision on a day-to-day basis?

04:00For me personally,
04:04kindness at the workplace.
04:06I think growing up before Mangud,
04:07I belong to the older generation.
04:10So there's a gap between,
04:11you know,
04:12like the company leadership roles
04:13and the rank and file workers.
04:15But now I see,
04:16especially in our company,
04:18there's that fusion na.
04:19So there's that direct communication
04:20that happens between us
04:22in the leadership role
04:23and also the employees that work under us.
04:26So because of that,
04:27we tend to be more compassionate.
04:29So we don't just stay in the ivory tower
04:31making decisions na.
04:32We're actually involving people on the ground,
04:34actually talking to our customers,
04:36talking to,
04:37you know,
04:38our market
04:38so that we better understand them.
04:40So how do you respond to impressions?
04:45or questions
04:46whether the success
04:48that you are in
04:49was achieved,
04:50and I'm sorry,
04:51but I have to ask you,
04:52was achieved through merit
04:53or privilege?
04:55Yeah.
04:55Oh, very good question.
04:56And I think that happens a lot,
04:57especially with family-run businesses.

05:00Because a lot of people think na,

05:03this is a family business,
05:04so it's generally just passed on
05:06to the children,
05:06even though they don't deserve it,
05:08for lack of a better term.
05:10So for us particularly,
05:11I can't speak for other corporations,
05:13but for us,
05:14we have to earn our place
05:15in the company.
05:17So like for me,
05:18when I first started,
05:20I didn't know anything
05:20about the fuel industry,
05:21but I had to learn,
05:23especially now
05:23that I'm handling operations.
05:25So now,
05:26we have about 50 retail stations
05:28na all over Cebu.
05:30So I've had to dabble a little bit
05:33sa construction side,
05:34sa compliance side,
05:35sa operation side,
05:36sa sales and marketing.
05:37So I think,
05:38to answer your question,
05:41it can start with privilege,
05:43but to be sustainable,
05:45you have to earn your right there,
05:47your place there.
05:47So it gets you to the door,
05:49but it's up to you
05:50how you will continue.
05:51Correct.
05:52And if you want to last,
05:53if you want it to be
05:54a legacy company,
05:55a legacy business,
05:56you have to keep growing.
05:58You have to keep learning
05:59and evolving.
05:59Otherwise,

06:01your foot in the door
06:02and then how do you grow the company?
06:04How do you expand?
06:05So we're very lucky
06:06that we're being led
06:07by a visionary leader.
06:09So Eric Lim,

06:14and he always takes
06:15all of us with us.

06:21in this context,
06:22they see a success.
06:24But obviously,
06:25there's also a lot of work
06:28that you did
06:29to get you here.
06:31So what were the sacrifices
06:34or the work
06:36that you invested?

07:20of trends,

07:22To be aware,
07:22to be on the ground,
07:23to not just sit

07:28and explore.
07:29And that's the only way
07:30you learn about the market
07:31that you're inside.

07:46about how you balance
07:47career and family
07:48because unfortunately,
07:50I noticed that women
07:51are normally asked
07:52these questions
07:53more than men.

08:02Do you think
08:02that's also a reflection
08:03of the outdated
08:07understanding
08:07of society in general
08:09about the roles
08:10men and women

08:17were not really
08:18asked that question.

08:40a curiosity.

08:56in your company,
08:57you do a leadership role,

09:52women don't necessarily
09:54have to prove
09:55themselves
09:56that much
09:57as compared
09:58to before.
09:59When you look
10:00at the general
10:01landscape,
10:02the Philippines
10:03is one of the few
10:04countries in the world
10:04where we've had
10:05two women presidents.
10:07Even America,
10:08who's the democratic
10:10leader in the whole
10:11world,
10:12they've never had
10:12a woman president
10:13before,
10:14right?
10:14And more women
10:15in the Philippines
10:16are actually taking
10:16leadership roles
10:17in their own companies.
10:18So I think
10:20it's time for us
10:21to take
10:2210 steps forward
10:23and not move back
10:25and stay stuck
10:25in that place
10:26where,
10:27oh,
10:27we have to elbow
10:27our way up
10:28to the top.
10:29I think we have
10:30to think of it
10:31as like,
10:32how do we
10:32complement each
10:33other?
10:34How do we
10:34complement the
10:35men in our
10:35company where
10:36we actually
10:37strengthen their
10:38position?
10:39And how do
10:39the men in the
10:40company strengthen
10:41the women?

10:42Because at the end
10:43of the day,
10:43we're all one
10:44team.

15:28differently.

15:32just education
15:33and sharing
15:34and growing
15:35because we're a
15:37third world
15:38country.
15:39The States is an
15:39American.
15:40It's a first world
15:40country and yet
15:41they have their
15:42own problems.
15:42They still have
15:43women claiming
15:44that we haven't
15:46broken the glass
15:46ceiling yet.
15:47We're still being
15:48looked down on.
15:49There's free the
15:49nipple programs.
15:50So I think it's
15:52case-to-case
15:52by country, but I
15:53think macro, it's
15:55hard for us to
15:56control.
15:57But if we focus
15:58more on the
16:00microcosm, for
16:00example, we can't
16:01even control the
16:02whole Philippines.
16:03So why don't we
16:04do Cebu?
16:04Why don't we
16:05educate the
16:05Cebuano market?
16:07This is how it's
16:08supposed to be.
16:08Maybe you might
16:09disagree with us,
16:10but this is what
16:11we think.
16:12So you're welcome

16:16pattern that I'm
16:17seeing with your
16:17answers is you
16:18are advocating for
16:20a respectful

18:23that they have to
18:24earn, the kids
18:25have to eat,
18:26they have to pay
18:26the bills,
18:27they have to make
18:28sure that the kids
18:28grow up to be
18:29responsible human
18:30beings.
18:31And then how do
18:32you divide the roles?
18:33And it's a
18:33discovery process.
18:34There's no one
18:35manifesto that says
18:37these are the
18:38things, it's
18:39always evolving
18:39because we're
18:40human beings.
18:41And at the same
18:41time, we're
18:41always evolving
18:42as well as we
18:43grow.
18:44And then it's
18:45two different
18:45people coming
18:46together.
18:48It's understanding
18:49the value that
18:51the person can
18:52bring to advance
18:54a relationship
18:55regardless of
18:57the type of
18:58roles or the
18:59gender.
19:00It's the value
19:02however that
19:03works for both
19:04of them or for
19:05the family.
19:06So to advocate
19:08more of that
19:10kind of mindset,
19:11I'll start with
19:12the men.
19:13What should we
19:15be learning so
19:16that we would be
19:17supportive of
19:18such a setup?
19:20We say men who
19:21are open about
19:22it because you
19:24have a better
19:25earning capacity,
19:27you earn for the
19:28family, and I'll
19:29take care of the
19:30babies.
19:31My triplets.
19:32I'll take care of
19:33the babies.
19:36But there are
19:37also men
19:39who are
19:40uncomfortable
19:40with the
19:42setup.
19:43So I'm
19:44going to
19:44stick with that.
19:45So how can
19:45women support
19:46men also in
19:47that situation?
19:48So basically,
19:50for me,
19:51whatever the
19:52situation,
19:53the only way
19:54we support
19:54each other is
19:55to be
19:57empathetic
19:57towards each
19:57other and
19:58to be able
19:59to understand
19:59and not
20:00judge.

20:01for me,
20:03there's a lot
20:04of expectation
20:05from society.
20:06Men have to
20:07earn more,
20:08men can't
20:08stay home,
20:09women have to
20:10stay home.
20:11So sometimes
20:12at a certain
20:13point, we just
20:13have to stop
20:14listening to all
20:15the noise that
20:16society tries
20:16to implode
20:17on us and
20:18try to find
20:19our own
20:20opinion and
20:20our own
20:21thought
20:21processes on
20:22what will
20:22make us
20:23secure in
20:23our own
20:24family.
20:24At the end
20:25of the day,
20:25if you're
20:26one unit,
20:26one family,
20:27you work
20:28together for
20:28the good of
20:29your family.
20:30There's no
20:30outside noise
20:31but our
20:32outside voices,
20:34social media,
20:35there's so much
20:36expectation to
20:37play a certain
20:38role.
20:38So at the end
20:39of the day,
20:39for me,
20:40how I do it
20:41with my
20:41partner,
20:41he's a judge.
20:43So we play,
20:43so my business
20:45is legal.
20:46So at one
20:47point,
20:48you're a lot
20:48of legal and
20:49business,
20:49but when we
20:50come together
20:50for our kids,
20:51our family,
20:52we share our
20:53roles and the
20:53wonderful thing
20:54about us is
20:55we support each
20:56other.
20:57So he doesn't
20:58hold me back
20:58from pursuing my
20:59dreams and I
21:00don't hold him
21:00back from pursuing
