00:02This morning, China is warning President Trump that tensions over Taiwan could push U.S. relations
00:09into what Xi Jinping called an extremely dangerous place.
00:13The warning came during the first day of high-stakes talks between the two leaders in Beijing.
00:18Both the White House and Chinese officials described the opening day as good,
00:22with discussions focused primarily on trade, but also touching on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
00:28Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration wants China to play a more active role
00:34in helping end the war between the U.S. and Iran.
00:38China remains one of Tehran's closest global partners.
00:42Officials say Xi also used a closed-door session to warn Trump that tensions over Taiwan could lead to direct
00:49conflict.
00:50China claims Taiwan as its territory, while Taiwan operates as a self-governed democracy.
00:56Trump used the public portion of the meeting to praise his long-standing relationship with Xi
01:02and their ability to resolve disputes directly.
