00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Now, I wonder what coffee, rain and new cars all have in common.
00:40Puzzled? I should say you should be.
00:42Well, they all appear on the list of the nation's favourite smells.
00:47Fascinating. We all have our own personal favourites, of course, but here are some fascinating facts.
00:53According to the latest survey of UK adults, the top three aromas are freshly cut grass at number three, depends
01:01on the time of day, and the nation's favourite is freshly baked bread, Rachel.
01:04Mm-hmm. I can go along with that.
01:06I've got a list of 50 here, and it goes on and on, all sorts of things, down through sun
01:12cream, hardly.
01:14Yes?
01:14Yeah, it reminds me of holidays. Smells nostalgic, aren't they? They bring back more memories than anything else sometimes.
01:19And in Disneyland, when I was younger, they used to have, like, candy floss and popcorn and roast chestnuts.
01:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:26And that smell of roasted sweet things was lovely.
01:29But I tried roast chestnuts once, because they smell amazing, and I think they're absolutely disgusting.
01:35I think I ate about one or two, just to make sure after the first one that the second one
01:39was horrible as well, and then threw them away.
01:40I think you're right. It's the visual picture, the visual picture.
01:45Now, Maria, welcome back.
01:48Two good wins.
01:49It's fantastic, from New Ross in County Wexford.
01:53Well, I hope you had a restful weekend.
01:56Well done.
01:56You're joined by James Barber, car rental branch manager from Darlington, who is a National Trust member, I guess, because
02:04you'd love to go visiting National Trust.
02:06Yeah, yeah, kids a bit.
02:07I'm sure, I'm sure they do.
02:09Well, good luck to you both today.
02:10Big round of applause, then, for Maria and James Barber.
02:18There we go.
02:19And over in the corner, Susie, of course, having had a restful weekend.
02:23In fact, I hope both Susies, because motorsport enthusiast and TV presenter, Susie Perry, is with us.

12:49well James 220 Maria 220 James 2 times 100 200 10 plus 10 yeah very simple and
13:00here 100 plus 10 multiplied by 2 yeah we can all do that in our heads there we go
13:06thank you 36 to 30 as we turn now to work to Susie Susie and he's gotten some
13:13pretty rough rough waters a while ago yes unintentionally I did I don't get to spend
13:23as much time as I would like with my parents because of working away so when
13:28we spend time together we try to go and do something you know to create memories
13:31and and have fun together and be kind of away from the home as well just do
13:36something a bit different and on an auction at a charity this trip came up
13:41sailing trip in Tenerife and I thought well that'd be great for us you know we
13:45could all go together and and have a week together on a boat that would be such fun
13:51I didn't really realize it was a training trip to learn to say I I can sail a bit
13:55my husband can sail a bit so we got there and I thought well it'll be all right I
13:59mean my dad and mum weren't weren't that kind of keen on it but they thought it
14:03would be fun you know so we got on the boat which was quite small the training
14:07boat and we're trying to get to Lagomera which is the little island that's not
14:12that far away and the captain said to me look when we go over there today there's
14:16going to be a little bit of a breeze you know it's going to be a little bit choppy
14:19for about an hour so we get to the bit it's going to be a bit sticky and the
14:23captain sort of looked around at me and I was at the helm when he said you know
14:26like I could see it was starting to chop up a bit anyway it got bigger the waves got
14:31bigger and bigger and bigger and in the end I was finding it really difficult to hang
14:36onto the boat and my husband came up this one massive wave came over and he had
14:41to help me hold the boat at which point I thought this is bigger than a bit of
14:45gust you know and I could see what was coming in and the worst thing for my mom
14:49and dad they were sitting on the side of the boat where they could see how huge
14:53the waves were that and it suddenly gets up you know if you've ever been on the
14:56sea you'll know how if you're in a storm well we were in a right old storm Nick
15:01honestly it was I remember thinking they're never gonna trust me ever ever again
15:05they're never gonna want to go on holiday with me 4th 11 we were in it was
15:11pretty hairy so we managed to navigate our way through but I looked down at one
15:16point my mom and dad were just sodden you know they were just covered in the wind
15:20was up and they were clipped on you know we had to clip them on everybody was
15:24hanging on there and eventually you get through it so we got through to the port
15:28I just thought what are they gonna think you know but that's what life's about
15:32making memories exactly but you achieved the memory element of the of the trip
15:36so that's great you can talk about it
15:38my dad would say we survived it that's his memory of it good for you but great fun and
15:43you know just this wonderful spending time with family and friends and there's
15:48nothing quite like it nothing beats that really we'll give you a force 11 round of applause for
15:59Susie thank you now 36 to 30 and it's Maria's letters game yes ma'am

19:23And the Susies?
19:25They were tough ones, weren't they?
19:26Mmm.

25:01each of two halves, very good, Susie, um, bit of a struggle, another six, gaiety, yeah, yeah,
25:11thank you, 65 to 36, Susie, come, it's that time again, your special spot, your origins of words.
25:21Well, do you remember on Friday, I introduced Robin Henry, who's an eight-year-old viewer, um, of the programme,
25:26and, uh, wrote in to ask a couple of questions, and I'm coming to a second one today, and that
25:31is all about the game Hopscotch,
25:33still played in, um, British playgrounds, uh, today, and, uh, Robin was just a little bit curious,
25:39because he said, why is it not called Hop Jump, which makes much more sense, um, when you think
25:43about it, and, um, back in the 17th century, Hopscotch, the game, was called Scotch Hoppers,
25:50and if you trace the game all the way back, it might even go, um, back to the beginning of
25:54the
25:54Christian era, so the first thing to say to Robin is, it's a very, very old game, but the Scotch
26:00part
26:00has nothing to do with Scotland, uh, or the Scottish, and, um, a clue to its real meaning, perhaps, is
26:05in,
26:06is that some other, um, English counties call it Hopscore, so yet another name for it, and that's
26:12because the lines marking the squares are scored or scotched, Scotch is another name for cut, really,
26:18into the ground, and before they were chalked, as they are, uh, nowadays, they might be, you might use,
26:23um, a bit of turf, and you would literally score or cut with a knife squares into the grass, and
26:29that
26:29was used as your, um, platform, really, for the Hopscotch. Butterscotch is actually based on that same,
26:35um, idea of scoring, um, because the lovely sweet mixture is, um, when it's hardened is scored or cut
26:41into, um, little squares. Um, so it's fascinating, the history of children's games, and of course the
26:46language vocabulary that they use in the playground too, but I hope that answers Robin, uh, Robin's
26:51query, and I also hope that he continues to call it Hop Jump, because I like that version better.
26:56Very good, well done.
27:03Thank you. 65 to 36. James, now then, James, your letters go.
