00:00:12Each of these boys are going to be world heavyweight champions.
00:00:16I'm dedicating my life to them.
00:00:19The most famous family in the history of professional wrestling, the Von Erich boys.
00:00:23Kevin, David, Kerry, and Mike Von Erich.
00:00:26There's two things that were big in Texas, football and the Von Erichs.
00:00:30Today it's Texas, tomorrow the world, baby.
00:00:33We don't grow up in Texas without hearing about the Von Erichs.
00:00:36Wherever the Von Erichs go, a crowd always follows.
00:00:40Everything was fun. Everybody was our friend.
00:00:44Everybody thought it was going to last forever.
00:00:47It couldn't work that way.
00:00:49David Von Erich died Friday. He was 25 years old.
00:00:53It was a shock. Texas was in mourning.
00:00:57We're just overwhelmed. All of these people surrendered for the last experience I was ever going to make.
00:01:02Kerry didn't have time to grieve.
00:01:04It's tough, but we know it's a responsibility that we have to do.
00:01:08He goes from David's dead, you're the main event.
00:01:12Harry Von Erich is the new world heavyweight champion.
00:01:17There's an image he had to hold up.
00:01:18There's pressure to keep that name alive.
00:01:32For a lot of people, they need different things, but for me, I need this.
00:01:37Life throws a lot at you, but if I can get out and into nature with my family, it's just
00:01:46the best in the world.
00:01:47When I'm out here with my kids, and then with my grandkids, it's almost like I'm getting a chance to
00:01:53be their dad again.
00:01:55And in every one of my grandkids, I see Dave.
00:01:58I see Kerry.
00:01:59I see Michael.
00:02:00I even see Chris.
00:02:03Taking a grain of salt because I'm a guy that lost family.
00:02:06But to me, family is everything.
00:02:09Everything.
00:02:11Everything.
00:02:26Well, we have a lot of pictures.
00:02:31You know, pictures are great.
00:02:33It can be painful, too.
00:02:35But my dad documented everything.
00:02:38Okay, I remember the exact moment we did this.
00:02:41There weren't any birds there, but we were imagining it, and we saw Dad's face.
00:02:45He was looking.
00:02:46So we got serious, too.
00:02:48All right.
00:02:48See, whatever he did, I did.
00:02:50And look at Dave.
00:02:52He's fierce.
00:02:55Kerry cracked a joke, and everyone's laughing.
00:02:58And it's like I got two pictures of Dave laughing, horse laughing.
00:03:04Mike, too.
00:03:07It's so cool how you all got to wrestle together.
00:03:10Well, just imagine you inside, you know, just playing outside.
00:03:14But there's thousands of people watching.
00:03:16So that's what's going to happen when they start playing with their brother in front of a bunch of people.
00:03:21I want to show you something.
00:03:26This is a pizza commercial we did.
00:03:30And it was like all night long we took it to do that.
00:03:34Kerry kept cracking everybody up, you know.
00:03:37And Kerry was always playing tricks.
00:03:39Outlight was a great day, though.
00:03:41Happy, Mike?
00:03:42Okay.
00:03:44Okay.
00:03:45Here we go.
00:03:46Ready?
00:03:47And walk, guys.
00:03:49Action.
00:03:49My brothers taught me about wrestling, but I taught them about eating.
00:03:53So he brought us to Pizza Inn's All-You-Can-E-E-Buffet.
00:03:57Okay, gentlemen.
00:03:58Lots of energy.
00:04:00Pizza, Mike.
00:04:01Pizza.
00:04:01But I taught them about pizza.
00:04:06I'm hungry again now.
00:04:08Pour pizza out, it's Pizza Inn.
00:04:13That was ridiculous.
00:04:15You got my words, man.
00:04:17We got my words.
00:04:21I can't say that I was ripped off because my brother has died too young.
00:04:26And there's our four babies all together.
00:04:30Because the truth is we had a hell of a lot of fun.
00:04:34A lot of fun.
00:04:35We did everything.
00:04:39The Von Eriks have won the hearts of wrestling fans with their style and flair.
00:04:44They're the most popular wrestling family in the world.
00:04:47As a sports anchor, I had a chance to cover the Von Eriks.
00:04:50A remarkable family from Father Fritz right down to sons Kerry, Kevin, and Mike.
00:04:54Well, they were constantly in the media.
00:04:56So the Von Eriks are going to be watching this?
00:04:59Had a knock on the door one night and the policeman come and got me and said, hey, there's a
00:05:02big guy at the door.
00:05:03And I went, I'm looking up at this guy.
00:05:05He literally reached out, took hands, and he said, my name is Carl Malone.
00:05:09I'm trying out for the Mavericks.
00:05:11You think I could meet the Von Eriks?
00:05:14Von Eriks.
00:05:16That was our splurge every six months to go see these guys.
00:05:22And I remember how nice they were, every one of them.
00:05:26They're just good boys.
00:05:27The world just needs heroes today.
00:05:29That's all.
00:05:29I'm just a regular guy, you know.
00:05:31The Lord has given us all this popularity, and we're lucky to have it.
00:05:35If you're watching the Von Eriks like I was on cable, there's something very authentic about them.
00:05:41They're just like the family down the road.
00:05:43Come see me and the boss at this pretty good store that does have it all.
00:05:46In a sense, the Von Eriks family just like wrapped its arms around all of Texas.
00:05:50Kevin Von Eriks recently visited the Donald Society for Crippled Children.
00:05:54They were making a difference in this world with those that needed a helping hand.
00:05:56The Von Eriks donated their time, their energy, and their money so that youngsters may learn to walk in this
00:06:02world of ours.
00:06:03Being a part of the community was super important.
00:06:06Their faith was, when you tithe, then you will receive.
00:06:10And a part of their tithing was giving of themselves.
00:06:14And they did take the responsibility of the image that they had very seriously.
00:06:23You've got to be on all the time in front of your fans.
00:06:28And so, for Carrie, the use of drugs got a little stronger, even more stronger.
00:06:38I can't imagine what that was like for all of them.
00:06:42I was so young coming in, out of high school and getting into it, and everybody recognizing you, you know,
00:06:48wherever you go.
00:06:49It's hard.
00:06:49My Uncle Chris really idolized Uncle Mike and Uncle Kerry.
00:06:55I think it was really hard for Uncle Chris when Uncle Mike left home to go wrestle, because he was
00:07:02just home with Mimi and Grandad.
00:07:04Being home alone, watching them be successful.
00:07:07Mike, Kerry, and Kevin Von Eriks!
00:07:11The reach of the Von Eriks, and of world class more broadly, was pretty incredible.
00:07:17They were hugely popular in Israel, of all places.
00:07:22Well, we were wrestling in Israel, and we had a lot of shows there.
00:07:26And Mike dislocated his shoulder, and Mike just popped out.
00:07:34So we flew him back to America to have surgery.
00:07:39A few days after that, his wife, Shani, called me, and she said,
00:07:45Kev, Mike is acting really funny.
00:07:49Hold us over there.
00:07:51And sure enough, his fever was so high.
00:07:55So I just picked him up and put him over my shoulder.
00:07:59I couldn't wait in traffic, so I'm driving in the median.
00:08:02And a cop sees me, recognizes me, pulls in front of us,
00:08:07and we drove down the median all the way to that little hospital.
00:08:11And we got Mike there.
00:08:13I thought he was going to die.
00:08:16Start things off a little on the downside tonight, as far as sports goes.
00:08:20I got a call about 20 minutes ago from Fitzbrunn-Erik,
00:08:22and he said a lot of people are a little concerned about the younger boy, Mike,
00:08:25who has not been wrestling for the last four or five weeks.
00:08:28He had some shoulder surgery done.
00:08:30Apparently, he suffered some type of toxic poisoning.
00:08:33Mike was in a bad way.
00:08:36The incision in the shoulder, evidently that got infected.
00:08:41Doctors say the wrestler has toxic shock syndrome,
00:08:44type of staph infection which sends potent toxins circulating through the bloodstream.
00:08:48It causes damage to major organs and even death.
00:09:01Luckily, they got Dr. Bill Sutker, who made the diagnosis.
00:09:04He was the head infectious disease doctor really anywhere in the country.
00:09:08It's just this one particular kind of bacteria that can be so virulent.
00:09:12I practiced for 40 years.
00:09:15Mike is one of the sickest patients I saw in my entire career.
00:09:19One of the Dallas area's most celebrated wrestlers is now fighting for his life at Baylor University Medical Center.
00:09:25The youngest, Ron Eric, suffered kidney failure and temperatures in excess of 106 degrees.
00:09:30You can't sustain a temperature of over 105 or 106 very long.
00:09:36And we would ice him down when his fever would go up to try and help bring the temperature down.
00:09:42He developed kidney failure as well as other multi-organ failure.
00:09:46Baylor Medical Center.
00:09:47The Baylor Hospital switchboard is receiving 100 calls an hour from Von Erich fans.
00:09:52We're having to transfer Von Erich calls to public relations.
00:09:55One moment, please.
00:09:56During that whole week that Mike was in the hospital, people were calling, offering to donate organs.
00:10:01In fact, several people have called several times so they can donate their organs.
00:10:06What does he need?
00:10:07I'm here.
00:10:08Take my number.
00:10:09More than 100 fans gathered in the parking lot of the sportatorium to hear news of Mike.
00:10:14It's a sad situation.
00:10:15I look at him like I would my own kids.
00:10:17I just prayed that he would pull out of it.
00:10:20Kevin and Kerry Von Erich say they'll wrestle Monday night and dedicate the match to their brother.
00:10:25It's a family business out there and somebody had to mind the shot.
00:10:30Everybody in Chicago wishing the very best for your brother, Michael.
00:10:38We're not sure when this battle will end, but I guarantee we're all champions.
00:10:42We're all winners, and Mike's the winner, and we'll come out of it as winners.
00:10:49My son said to me, if Mike Von Erich dies, the whole world is going to hate you.
00:10:57Doctors say they can't predict when Von Erich will be out of danger, but they say that someone physically weaker
00:11:02would be dead.
00:11:04Mike's whole situation, you know, zooming out.
00:11:08It's like the word curse feels like wholly inadequate, and also it captures the ominous unknowableness in a way that
00:11:18we don't really have another word for.
00:11:20It's impossible to wrap your head around what one family had to go through.
00:11:26There was quite a while where he didn't seem to be responding, and I was not optimistic that he was
00:11:32going to be able to make it through the illness.
00:11:34But I had gone down to tell them there was a good chance he wasn't going to survive.
00:11:41He said, we've done all we can do.
00:11:43He said, Kevin says, Doctor, how long?
00:11:46He said, Kevin, maybe 20 minutes.
00:11:49The doctor gave us the bad news, but we all got down with all our good friends and prayed.
00:11:55The Lord would work through their hands.
00:11:58We said, we're not going to say goodbye.
00:12:00So we all formed a circle and held hands, and our preacher started these prayers.
00:12:08Gary Holder was there, the evangelist.
00:12:11Gary Holder took that Bible, and he said, he said, God, here's your word.
00:12:15In it you say, if we believe, if we pray, you will deliver.
00:12:21And then he slammed it down on the table.
00:12:26He said, there's your word, deliver.
00:12:30And it wasn't 30 seconds till the door swung open.
00:12:34It was just Bill Sudger.
00:12:36And he came out, and he said, well, I don't know what's happened, but his vitals are back to normal.
00:12:42Last night was really scary.
00:12:43I mean, scary to the point where it was almost hopeless.
00:12:46Folks, let me tell you, a miracle took place last night, just that we have Mike with us today.
00:12:52Well, professional wrestler Mike Von Erich remains in critical but stable condition at Baylor University Medical Center.
00:12:58The best sign of all is that Von Erich's temperature has fallen from a high of 107 to normal.
00:13:03We'll update you on his condition again tomorrow.
00:13:07Things started to plateau, and then eventually started to improve.
00:13:17Yeah, that's what he did.
00:13:20I can't wait till the convo show on and be there.
00:13:25He's still very, very sick.
00:13:27There's no question about that.
00:13:28But that boy is going to be fine, thanks be to the Almighty himself.
00:13:34I think he was in the hospital about a month.
00:13:36I think the fact that he was a professional athlete and that his body was in such good shape was
00:13:42the reason that he was able to survive.
00:13:45The main thing that I'm looking forward to is getting back in the ring again.
00:13:50Whenever I get home, you know, I have to start slow.
00:13:52But whenever they say it's okay to start working out, boy, I'm going to be in there working hard.
00:13:58You go from deathbed to literally six weeks, seven weeks, whatever it was before we brought him out for Cotton
00:14:04Bowl.
00:14:05I'm pleased to present to you a living miracle.
00:14:08Welcome to the Cotton Bowl, Mike Von Erich!
00:14:15They brought him out in the car for all the fans to cheer.
00:14:20The crowd was just crazy.
00:14:23I'd like to thank everybody here for being here today.
00:14:27I would like to thank all the doctors and nurses for helping me.
00:14:31And I'd like to thank all of you for the prayers and your support.
00:14:36Thank you for coming and thank you very much.
00:14:38It's great to be back.
00:14:41When Mike Von Erich got sick, they were down a Von Erich, right?
00:14:46So Fritz brought in a fake Von Erich, Lance Von Erich, who was billed as a cousin of the Von
00:14:51Erich family.
00:14:52Lance, welcome to World Class.
00:14:54Great to have you with us.
00:14:55It's great to be here.
00:14:56I feel right at home here.
00:14:59My dad figured that he needed extra help.
00:15:03Man, I hated that idea.
00:15:05He's the closest you can get to a brother.
00:15:08And hey, we need a brother right now.
00:15:09And I'm sure he's going to surprise a lot of people.
00:15:12World Class was doing everything he could to compete.
00:15:14They were still very successful.
00:15:15But in the background, the script is totally flipped for World Class, right?
00:15:20It's like they were so recently like the biggest promotion in the country.
00:15:24But now WWE had this national TV deal with NBC.
00:15:30They had the Rock and Roll Connection on MTV, Saturday Morning Cartoon.
00:15:35They were finding whole new plateaus of success.
00:15:39Fritz did what he thought was best to sort of band-aid the whole thing together.
00:15:45Life was still good.
00:15:46We were still drawing.
00:15:47And then phone rang, and I picked it up.
00:15:50It was Fritz.
00:15:51And he said, Kerry's been in an accident.
00:15:54And I'm like, how bad?
00:15:56He said, his leg looks like an alligator chewed on it.
00:16:07You know, before I even say anything, everybody back then, you drank and you smoked weed and stuff like that.
00:16:14A lot of times, even if he did get pulled over, unless you were doing something really bad, Yvonne Erickson
00:16:20were so popular, the cops would let him go.
00:16:26That day, Kerry was out.
00:16:29At Lake Dallas, he had a boat.
00:16:31I guess he had been drinking.
00:16:35And he had on flip-flops and a tank top and shorts.
00:16:39And he's on his motorcycle.
00:16:48He ran into a cop car that was sitting at a red light, hit it from behind, going like 50
00:16:53miles an hour, and went over the top of it.
00:16:57I was pregnant with Lacey.
00:17:00When I got the call, I knew.
00:17:02I was like, our world is crumbling.
00:17:04He's really, really getting bad.
00:17:08The fractured ankle is fairly serious.
00:17:11It's an open wound to the ankle.
00:17:13And that's the reason for necessitating surgery tonight.
00:17:18I actually saw him in the emergency room.
00:17:21The yellow paint from the paint on the stripes was right here on top of his foot, where his foot
00:17:28had grinded that and had some yellow paint on his bone.
00:17:32Lucky it didn't kill him.
00:17:35That was a miracle, no doubt about it.
00:17:37That was his only injuries.
00:17:39He had no other injuries at all.
00:17:42His foot was in really pretty pathetic shape when he came in.
00:17:47And we were all worried that he really had a very good chance of losing his foot.
00:17:52However, with a surgical team, they have saved Gary's foot.
00:17:58Thank you for all your support.
00:18:00Thank you for your prayers.
00:18:01A lot of big things have happened since I've came into the hospital.
00:18:05One of the greatest things, again, thanks to Dr. Seifker, Mike, my brother.
00:18:10We'll be back July 4th.
00:18:19There was a lot of Greek mythology built into pro wrestling.
00:18:23It's the tragedy and the triumph and overcoming the odds.
00:18:26I think that's the real power of the Von Erich story.
00:18:29It's not just the tragic part.
00:18:31Their ability to triumph over it at times.
00:18:34Von Erich will the triumph and return to the ring.
00:18:37There was a big push for him to get back in the ring.
00:18:39And the people were like, come on, Mike, you can do it.
00:18:42When the fans really love you, you love them too, you know.
00:18:45And you feel a responsibility.
00:18:47You feel like you owe it to them to be what they expect you to be.
00:18:51You know, and he's just doing what he's got to do.
00:18:54Fritz's opinion was, when he's ready, he'll know he's ready.
00:18:58But he wasn't pushed to come back.
00:19:00Mike wanted to get back.
00:19:03Mike was never the same after he came back from the toxic shop.
00:19:07He had a look in his eyes where he was just like, he was way out in la-la land.
00:19:13I'll tell you what, Brian, it is.
00:19:15I want you to know, I want a country whipping match with you.
00:19:19Country whipping match is what it's called.
00:19:22I don't think he was ever ready.
00:19:25I give Kevin credit.
00:19:27Gosh, he stepped up.
00:19:29Kevin Von Erich, listen to the fans cheer.
00:19:33It's a family business.
00:19:35It wasn't fun.
00:19:36It was work.
00:19:38And it was hard work.
00:19:40We were still trying to run three towns a day.
00:19:42But the people were not showing up to watch Mike.
00:19:45Kerry's in bed.
00:19:46He's got his foot cut off.
00:19:47So I've got to try to keep it going.
00:19:49And it was just, God, I'd do anything for a little bit of relief.
00:19:53You're pressured to be on all of the time.
00:19:58An image that they all want to uphold, to make each other proud, and to not let each other down,
00:20:04that is pressure.
00:20:06We want you to be somebody that we can idolize.
00:20:10And the crowd picks it up for Kevin.
00:20:13It was some really tough days.
00:20:16It was real hard days.
00:20:17I was working two or three times a day.
00:20:20If one of us were hurt, people would want their money back.
00:20:252,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, however many people, they bought a ticket.
00:20:30They're expecting to see them on earth.
00:20:33And they want to see you, whether you're grieving or hurt a lot, we carry.
00:20:38I've been out now for four or five months.
00:20:41And I miss the people, and I miss wrestling more than anything I've ever missed in my whole life.
00:20:47Kerry felt a big responsibility in that he took care of his fans.
00:20:52I had, you know, doubts.
00:20:54It was a bad wreck.
00:20:55Thank the Lord I'm still alive.
00:20:57It was really hard.
00:20:59All those months that he was down, I had to keep a smile through all of it and tell him
00:21:05it'll be all right.
00:21:08Even though Kerry's ankle was crippled, almost to the point of amputation, he refused to believe that he was through.
00:21:14For Kerry Von Erich, he could either give up or go to the gym.
00:21:18He worked really hard, and he had that work ethic just to make sure that he maintained the proper image.
00:21:26Life deals your lemons.
00:21:27You make lemonade.
00:21:28You keep on training.
00:21:29And you never give up.
00:21:33Supposedly, if he had followed up on the therapy and rehabilitation, it would have come back, and he would have
00:21:39been fine.
00:21:40But he wanted to get back.
00:21:42He wanted to get in front of the fans.
00:21:44He wanted to get back to being Kerry Von Erich.
00:21:47He came back, but the leg wasn't ready.
00:21:51He went too early, and it cost him.
00:21:56The biggest thing I remember about Kerry's motorcycle wreck was he was working hard in the gym.
00:22:02He wanted to come back, but he just wasn't ready.
00:22:08Because he came back, and the leg wasn't getting good blood circulation.
00:22:14And we had these steps at the fortitorium where you could go up and watch the matches.
00:22:18He was coming down those steps, and it broke.
00:22:21It was crazy.
00:22:23They had tried to save his foot.
00:22:25They did several operations, but it just wouldn't take.
00:22:29It was damaged so badly that they couldn't get the blood supply to it.
00:22:34It just wasn't healing like they hoped.
00:22:39They decided they needed to amputate the foot, which was really hard on Kerry emotionally.
00:22:51But he didn't want anybody to know about it, and he was fitted with a prosthesis he could wear under
00:22:56his boot.
00:22:56And so, for years, nobody actually knew that he didn't have a foot.
00:23:03Why hide it?
00:23:05The image, the Von Erich image.
00:23:11Was that Kerry's decision?
00:23:13No, it was his dad's decision.
00:23:16But Kerry did agree to that.
00:23:21To me, it would have been better to let the family talk about that, instead of just trying to keep
00:23:27it a secret.
00:23:28Like, no, he's still strong.
00:23:31No, but look how strong he is in his disability.
00:23:35Like, people could have learned from that, I think.
00:23:40Why'd you hide it, Fritz?
00:23:41Why didn't you just come out and say, yeah, he lost his foot?
00:23:44He didn't, because he didn't want to lose his company, because Kerry was his biggest star.
00:23:50He needed Kerry whole.
00:23:52People aren't going to come out and see a one-legged guy wrestle.
00:23:56You know what the worst thing about the leg was?
00:23:59Through all the pain and stuff, guess what?
00:24:01They're giving him drip.
00:24:02So they're feeding him the addiction he has.
00:24:06I had now two very young babies and a husband who needed rehabilitation, and he was in a lot of
00:24:14pain.
00:24:15And then the pain meds led to other horrible drugs, like cocaine.
00:24:21I asked Mr. Adkisson for help with him, and we did a family intervention, and he went to kind of
00:24:28a rehab.
00:24:29But then I got a phone call from Mr. Adkisson about three or four days into it, and it's like,
00:24:34the press is going to get a hold of this.
00:24:36I'm going to have to take him out.
00:24:38And my world crashed.
00:24:45Granddad, he loved his boys so much that he almost enabled them.
00:24:49Granddad bailed Uncle Kerry out of jail multiple times.
00:24:53And if anybody came to Granddad and said, I'm really worried about Kerry, or I'm really worried about Mike,
00:24:58Granddad's response was like, he's okay.
00:25:00I talked to him.
00:25:01He's okay.
00:25:01He loved them so much that he didn't want them to suffer.
00:25:06And if that meant going to rehab or going to jail, he wouldn't let that happen.
00:25:10He wouldn't have let any of his sons suffer.
00:25:15I'm sure it was a struggle for Mr. Adkisson in so many ways, running a company as well as taking
00:25:21care of your boys.
00:25:23World class is just doing all they can to tread water.
00:25:27And at the same time, the WWE is staging Wrestlemania 3, breaking the attendance record that Fritz and world class
00:25:35had previously held.
00:25:38And Fritz is trying to sort of balance these two things, the business and his family.
00:25:44It became whisperings of the domineering influence that Fritz had.
00:25:52All the boys looked up to their dad, but to Mike, he felt like he was going to be a
00:25:58failure by not becoming a really great Vaughn Eric.
00:26:04I tell you, I watched Mike last week.
00:26:05His timing's been a little bit off.
00:26:07You know, you can just see determination in Mike's eyes.
00:26:12I saw a lot of depression in him because of that.
00:26:18Mike was in a bad way.
00:26:21He was going through these things of rage.
00:26:25He got out of his car and attacked his traffic light.
00:26:33And when you told him about it, he was so embarrassed.
00:26:36He hated that.
00:26:37He was not that way.
00:26:39The brain is so complicated.
00:26:41Now it dealt with heat.
00:26:44Where's the mom at?
00:26:45She's in the house.
00:26:46Where else?
00:26:47In here?
00:26:48Yeah.
00:26:49I guess not in this car.
00:26:51He had gone through so much to get where he was and was making improvements as time went on.
00:26:57I don't know if he ever realized how sick he really was, even though all of us told him that.
00:27:04I don't know that he saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
00:27:10He was doing some of the pharmaceutical stuff and had a deal where he wrecked several cars in a row.
00:27:21And Fred said, I actually told him, she said, look, it's bad on our business.
00:27:26It's bad on our name.
00:27:28Don't come back to me with this anymore.
00:27:31He said, you're a grown man.
00:27:36We had decided to start a company called Vineyard Bright Incorporated.
00:27:41We're going to have sponsors on world tours.
00:27:45Things were looking really good.
00:27:48But that was when Mike got caught with that joint.
00:27:53And in Mike's mind, he has just ruined my whole deal.
00:27:57He thought that he just, he loved me so much.
00:28:00But he thought he'd really let me down.
00:28:04Felt so bad.
00:28:05He, uh...
00:28:08He had shamed us.
00:28:15Dozens of searchers had been scouring Lake Louisville by ground and air since Wednesday night.
00:28:20After finding Von Erick's abandoned car yesterday in the same park.
00:28:24A family attorney had reported the wrestler missing on Monday.
00:28:27Two days after Von Erick's arrest on drunk driving and drug charges.
00:28:32Inside the car, investigators found an unsigned handwritten note.
00:28:36It said, Mom and Dad, I'm in a better place.
00:28:39I'll be watching.
00:28:45I remember all that just like it was yesterday.
00:28:48They found him over on the other side of the lake at a...
00:28:52It's called Pilot Knoll Park.
00:28:54He just wrote a note, took a bunch of Placidils, and zipped himself up in a sleeping bag.
00:29:02Von Erick's mother, Doris Atkison, was at the park this morning when her 23-year-old son was found.
00:29:08Older brothers, Kevin and Carrie, arrived a short time later.
00:29:12It's really tough, and so...
00:29:14We're going to be fine.
00:29:15Our family's...
00:29:16Our family has...
00:29:18Had tough times before, and we're going to be all right.
00:29:22Man, he was such a good guy, but I mean, he just...
00:29:31I guess drugs.
00:29:33I didn't know Mike was really into drugs, but I guess he was.
00:29:37So it had to be that, because he had such good sense.
00:29:41He was too smart to kill himself.
00:29:44There's just...
00:29:45That's not Mike.
00:29:47Medication was by prescription, by the way, and he just took too much of it at one time,
00:29:53and apparently it was delivered.
00:29:57But just so no one misunderstands about that, Mike was sick.
00:30:00He'd never recovered in Toski's shock.
00:30:04It was just a big shock to me.
00:30:08I was devastated.
00:30:09You know, again, after an illness like this, I don't know that he fully recovered, you know, psychologically.
00:30:17Mike loved people.
00:30:19He was so considerate, loving, polite.
00:30:23He was for real.
00:30:24He was...
00:30:25I just can't believe he was gone.
00:30:29My dad, he was strong, and he kept the family together,
00:30:33even though my mother, my mother had started to fall apart by then.
00:30:38She loved so deep and so hard that it took something out of her.
00:30:48It crushed her.
00:30:50Mimi and Granddad were going through a lot.
00:30:53They both had their ways of dealing with the grief, my Mimi and my Granddad,
00:30:57and she really wanted to stay in control.
00:31:02Mike and I had been together since third grade,
00:31:06and, you know, I loved him like a brother.
00:31:09Another devastating moment for Kerry,
00:31:12where you just see it getting deeper and deeper and darker for him.
00:31:17But Kerry pushed through anything that was difficult,
00:31:21keeping up with the image that was so important to the Von Erichs.
00:31:27Because we have Jesus Christ, it makes us strong,
00:31:29and it makes us able to withstand things that people who aren't Christians
00:31:32can normally not take.
00:31:35They don't know where to turn.
00:31:36We know where to turn,
00:31:37and we know it's in the Lord's plan for these things to happen,
00:31:39and the Von Erichs are strong.
00:31:43Uncle Mike was very generous.
00:31:47After Uncle Mike died, multiple people reached out and said,
00:31:53I'm so sorry for your loss, but by the way, Mike had been paying my rent.
00:31:57Like, do you think you guys can still help with that?
00:32:00He loved people.
00:32:04Good guys hurt worse.
00:32:09And Mike was disappointed with himself.
00:32:13There was a bond between Chris and Mike that was just undeniable.
00:32:18And with Mike taking his life, I saw Chris just going downhill.
00:32:30Those who followed Von Erich in the ring say his death at age 23 is a shock,
00:32:35but it's said his death reminds fans that even heroes are human.
00:32:39Right after Uncle Mike passed away,
00:32:42just literally two months after he passed away,
00:32:46we had our own traumatic event.
00:33:07Right after Uncle Mike passed away,
00:33:10I was six, my sister was two,
00:33:13and my dad was coming back from a show.
00:33:21We said, can we go say hi to daddy?
00:33:23And we ran outside.
00:33:29My dad pulled into the garage.
00:33:31I was holding Jill's hand,
00:33:33and I remember her pulling her hand right out of mine
00:33:38and walking behind the car.
00:33:41She wanted to get to the driver's door and see my dad first.
00:33:46And in the instant that she got behind the car,
00:33:49my dad backed up just two or three feet.
00:33:54As I backed out,
00:33:56Jill had come around behind the car,
00:33:58and that Lincoln Continella went right up on her little liver.
00:34:05And Kristen said,
00:34:07Daddy, you've run over Jill.
00:34:10And I put her in gear and pissed the grass
00:34:13and spun out on her.
00:34:18And he said, oh, Jesus, oh, Jesus.
00:34:21And he pulled forward,
00:34:23picked her up,
00:34:23and there was this tire track on her nightgown
00:34:26that I just, like, burned into my memory,
00:34:29like literally a black tire mark across her nightgown.
00:34:32And I remember him trying to stand her on the counter,
00:34:36saying, you're okay, baby.
00:34:37You're okay.
00:34:38You're okay.
00:34:40And she looked gray,
00:34:42that gray look Dave had.
00:34:44And I, like, apologized to Pam.
00:34:46I said, she's okay.
00:34:48She's gonna live.
00:34:48She's okay.
00:34:50And Pam said,
00:34:51she put her hand on me,
00:34:52and said,
00:34:53she's gonna be all right.
00:34:56And I said, no, she's not.
00:35:02Jill's liver was ruptured,
00:35:05but the lining that holds it intact
00:35:07was the only thing holding an entire act.
00:35:11There was no long-term damage other than that,
00:35:15which is just unbelievable.
00:35:16And I genuinely believe that was prayer,
00:35:20you know, in that instant,
00:35:22because it was just my mom
00:35:24praying her whole heart out,
00:35:26and my dad just,
00:35:28his prayers are just so real.
00:35:33I do remember bits and pieces of that.
00:35:37I remember the hospital visits.
00:35:41My dad just not eating at all,
00:35:43never leaving my side,
00:35:44and I just can't imagine
00:35:47him going through that
00:35:48after everything that he's been through.
00:35:52It's hard to look at him now.
00:35:53Like, how much can one man handle?
00:35:57You can only imagine
00:35:59how that sort of could wreck a person, right?
00:36:01How that could, like, change the way
00:36:02that somebody thinks about life.
00:36:05I lost 35 pounds that month.
00:36:09It was hard for me,
00:36:10but I was so grateful that,
00:36:12you know, my kids were healthy,
00:36:14that I was, um,
00:36:18said, God, thank you for all this.
00:36:22I hate the devil.
00:36:23Let me fight him.
00:36:25All that grief,
00:36:27all that stress,
00:36:29groaning and being miserable.
00:36:32Let me fight the devil.
00:36:34I want to fight him.
00:36:35And I said,
00:36:36I hate you, devil.
00:36:37I want to fight you.
00:36:40Inside, I thought that
00:36:41I shouldn't have said that, you know.
00:36:43And then I thought,
00:36:44well, what's going to happen?
00:36:48The very next day,
00:36:49I was washing my dog down at the lake.
00:36:51I smelled blood and gunpowder.
00:36:56I felt weird inside.
00:36:58I felt like I was being watched.
00:37:01And I saw movement up on the shoreline.
00:37:04I saw these black things coming toward me.
00:37:08And Pam didn't see them.
00:37:10I said, get in the car, get in the car.
00:37:12And so I bent down
00:37:14and got into a crouching position.
00:37:16And I was ready to fight.
00:37:18And the next thing I know,
00:37:22I'm waking up from a seizure.
00:37:27And there's blood all over my feet
00:37:29where I've been kicking and fighting.
00:37:32It's terrible.
00:37:33And I know that I went way too far.
00:37:35I'm a man.
00:37:36But these demons,
00:37:37Satan is so much smarter than we are,
00:37:39can trick us,
00:37:40can make fools of us.
00:37:42So my relationship with God
00:37:44is just one of intense,
00:37:47super gratitude.
00:37:50The Von Erick story is really
00:37:52just a sort of mythological tragedy.
00:37:53It's not just the tragic part, I guess,
00:37:56but also their ability to triumph over it.
00:37:59Kevin's daughter probably should have died
00:38:00when she was really young.
00:38:01Mike probably should have died
00:38:03when he was diagnosed with toxic shock.
00:38:05Then Carrie probably should have died
00:38:06when he got into the wreck.
00:38:07Like, you know,
00:38:08was God testing them in those moments?
00:38:12Maybe those are actually moments of good fortune
00:38:15that they, like, didn't die in those moments
00:38:18after all this family had been through
00:38:19that they got lucky in a weird way.
00:38:22Carrie had this catastrophic injury
00:38:25and somehow tightened up his boots
00:38:27and got back into the ring.
00:38:33This is Thursday night,
00:38:34September the 10th, 1997.
00:38:37That's the old Carrie.
00:38:38Wonderful.
00:38:38It really is, son.
00:38:40That's great.
00:38:42That's the first day, too.
00:38:47Yeah, I wish you wouldn't get too carried away
00:38:48this first time, son.
00:38:50Hold your hands up, Chris.
00:38:54No, son, come on.
00:38:55Don't overdo this.
00:38:56Nothing's different.
00:38:57It's a miracle already.
00:39:00Don't expect a bigger miracle
00:39:01when you've already started.
00:39:05Folks, I feel great.
00:39:06It's been a long time,
00:39:07a year and a half.
00:39:08You know, my dad and I were just talking.
00:39:10Way back about a year ago,
00:39:11he told me not to go on that ring.
00:39:13Well, I guess we all go through times
00:39:14when we don't listen to Mommy and Daddy.
00:39:16And I didn't listen to my dad that night
00:39:18and I went to the ring
00:39:19and sure, it set us back.
00:39:21You set him way back.
00:39:22You already did, folks.
00:39:23Now he's listening.
00:39:24And I'll tell you, folks,
00:39:25I've been, I guess,
00:39:26pushing my dad harder than anyone.
00:39:27I think this time,
00:39:28even my dad feels that I'm ready.
00:39:30The greatest comeback
00:39:31in athletic history.
00:39:33For tonight,
00:39:34we've got the return
00:39:35of the modern-day warrior,
00:39:38Henry Starry.
00:39:41His first night back
00:39:43was Thanksgiving in 1987.
00:39:45And he and I wrestled
00:39:46at Reunion Arena.
00:39:47And it was packed.
00:39:48People were ready to see him again.
00:39:50Fans have come
00:39:51from all over this great nation
00:39:53to witness this historic event.
00:39:56Caramon Eric looking as good as new.
00:39:59Caramon Eric with a win!
00:40:01He came back.
00:40:02He started wrestling.
00:40:03I don't know how he did that.
00:40:06I wrestled with him.
00:40:08You couldn't tell
00:40:09that he didn't have half a foot.
00:40:11We did the same old f*** we did.
00:40:13And it worked.
00:40:15Caramon Eric wants to use
00:40:17that hard clock!
00:40:19I'd rather die
00:40:19than let you folks down.
00:40:25I think deep down,
00:40:27Fritz would have loved
00:40:28to have all his boys
00:40:29in a power position.
00:40:32Taking over
00:40:33was always the plan.
00:40:36But
00:40:36it already had
00:40:38David's gone,
00:40:39Mike's gone,
00:40:41the glory days.
00:40:42They were over
00:40:42by that time.
00:40:44Fritz was weaning off of it.
00:40:47When I lost Mike
00:40:49in 87,
00:40:51it was my third son to lose.
00:40:54Something died with Mike that year
00:40:56and I went out of wrestling.
00:40:57Not that I blame wrestling for it,
00:40:59but
00:41:00I just wanted to lose.
00:41:02And by the end of 87,
00:41:04I was out.
00:41:05Sold everything I had.
00:41:07It was super devastating
00:41:10to Cary
00:41:11when his dad sold
00:41:12and then they didn't get to
00:41:14have a part of that
00:41:15because they helped
00:41:17build
00:41:18the dynasty.
00:41:20It's just so hard
00:41:21to believe
00:41:21that
00:41:22family and so much control
00:41:23of their destiny
00:41:25and of this company
00:41:26that had greatness
00:41:27right
00:41:28at the apex
00:41:29would go the opposite way
00:41:30completely.
00:41:31I hated to see
00:41:33what we'd built
00:41:33all just
00:41:34passed over
00:41:35and passed up
00:41:36and sold,
00:41:37but
00:41:37I mean,
00:41:38God bless our fans.
00:41:39They'd suffered so much,
00:41:41but
00:41:42the Monarchs were kind of
00:41:43got to be a sad story.
00:41:47We're entertainers,
00:41:48you know?
00:41:49We don't want to
00:41:49bum you out.
00:41:52And so
00:41:52what's the end?
00:41:54World class,
00:41:55it was over
00:41:55as we knew it.
00:42:08This is
00:42:09quality family time.
00:42:10Yeah,
00:42:11just family time.
00:42:12It's like the,
00:42:13that makes the best memory
00:42:14for the kids
00:42:15and we used to do this
00:42:16when we were little
00:42:17with Mimi and Granddad
00:42:18and all of our uncles
00:42:19and cousins
00:42:20and it's a great memory.
00:42:25We're now getting
00:42:26pictures from
00:42:26a fine-eyed
00:42:27and more.
00:42:37It was just
00:42:38a really happy
00:42:40family
00:42:41and it was just
00:42:41such a fun way
00:42:43to grow up.
00:42:50When I was
00:42:51small,
00:42:52wrestling
00:42:52had really
00:42:53taken off
00:42:54and my dad
00:42:55was having
00:42:56a lot of success.
00:42:57My uncles
00:42:57were having
00:42:57a lot of success.
00:43:00We built
00:43:01a beautiful home
00:43:02and we just
00:43:03had a really
00:43:03comfortable life.
00:43:05Some trees
00:43:06that Kevin planted.
00:43:07He planted
00:43:08this pine tree,
00:43:09peach tree.
00:43:12And that's
00:43:13a swing
00:43:13that Kevin built
00:43:13for Christian
00:43:14that's how neat.
00:43:16We had
00:43:17sort of idyllic,
00:43:19you know,
00:43:20upper-class childhood.
00:43:23But then
00:43:24as his brother
00:43:26started to
00:43:27pass away,
00:43:29world-class
00:43:30wasn't
00:43:31as successful.
00:43:33With the deaths,
00:43:35world-class was,
00:43:37you know,
00:43:38going down fast.
00:43:41I think the fans
00:43:42got tired
00:43:44of being sad.
00:43:46Our attendance
00:43:47really started
00:43:48dropping off
00:43:48big.
00:43:51Wrestling
00:43:51sort of
00:43:52lost favor
00:43:53with its audience.
00:43:55plants.
00:43:57It became
00:43:57really apparent
00:43:58in our home life.
00:44:01Our water
00:44:02had been cut off
00:44:03because we couldn't
00:44:03pay the bill.
00:44:05There was a Christmas
00:44:06that we were on
00:44:07the angel tree,
00:44:08my siblings and I.
00:44:09So people had to,
00:44:11you know,
00:44:11pick our names
00:44:11off of a tree
00:44:12and buy it.
00:44:13I think I got a coat
00:44:14and a set of jacks
00:44:15and a bike
00:44:17from Mimi and Granddad.
00:44:23At that point,
00:44:24we had our house
00:44:26foreclosed on
00:44:27and Uncle Kerry
00:44:28lived two doors down
00:44:29and their house
00:44:30was being foreclosed
00:44:31on as well.
00:44:33And we had to move
00:44:35back to my
00:44:35grandparents' property
00:44:36and we're living
00:44:37in their little
00:44:38guest house trailer
00:44:39on the property.
00:44:41When we moved there,
00:44:43Uncle Chris
00:44:43had to move out.
00:44:44He had to move back
00:44:46into my grandparents' house,
00:44:47which was also
00:44:47on the property.
00:44:49So I feel like
00:44:50that was really
00:44:50humbling for him
00:44:52and he was kind of
00:44:54upset deeply about that.
00:44:59But when we were
00:45:00all together,
00:45:01you'd never think
00:45:02that he wasn't happy.
00:45:04Get my Uncle Chris
00:45:05to show you real quick.
00:45:06My Uncle Chris
00:45:07was like a big kid,
00:45:09you know,
00:45:09because he was so young.
00:45:11He was always
00:45:13working out with Daddy.
00:45:15They worked out
00:45:15a lot together
00:45:16in the barn
00:45:17and he wanted
00:45:18to be just like my dad.
00:45:19He wanted to be
00:45:20a wrestler
00:45:21just like Daddy.
00:45:23I just remember
00:45:23him being really
00:45:24protective of us kids.
00:45:27Hello, Ollie.
00:45:30Our family
00:45:30is very close
00:45:32and we look
00:45:33after each other
00:45:34and we take care
00:45:35of each other.
00:45:36Hey, Gracie,
00:45:37wait for the camera.
00:45:38Look at me.
00:45:40Around that time,
00:45:41my brother Ross
00:45:42was born.
00:45:43Here's the camera
00:45:44spots for all of us.
00:45:46We were struggling,
00:45:48so I can't imagine
00:45:48having another child
00:45:49whenever you were
00:45:51going through
00:45:52something like that.
00:45:57My dad's still
00:45:58signing autographs
00:45:59for people.
00:45:59People still know
00:46:00who he is.
00:46:01People still recognize him.
00:46:03But fame doesn't
00:46:04put food on the table.
00:46:13I could go
00:46:14other places,
00:46:15but I've had
00:46:16injuries too.
00:46:17I've had a lot of
00:46:17injuries and I was
00:46:18waking up
00:46:19so sore in the
00:46:20mornings and
00:46:22I couldn't get in
00:46:23the ring and just
00:46:23keep doing it.
00:46:24I'm groaning all
00:46:25the time
00:46:26and I'm not
00:46:27going to do
00:46:27that with the
00:46:28pain pills.
00:46:29So I had to
00:46:31quit.
00:46:32I kind of
00:46:33scrambled,
00:46:33you know,
00:46:34to just
00:46:35make it all
00:46:36happen.
00:46:38Sold real estate.
00:46:40I've also
00:46:41sold insurance
00:46:42and a lot
00:46:44of prayer.
00:46:45Dear Lord,
00:46:46thank you for
00:46:46all of us being
00:46:47together.
00:46:48It helps us to
00:46:48be a little bit
00:46:49more worthy.
00:46:50In Jesus' name
00:46:51we pray.
00:46:51Amen.
00:46:52Amen.
00:46:53There's a lot
00:46:54of worry out
00:46:55there,
00:46:55you know,
00:46:56and a lot
00:46:56of times I've
00:46:58looked down and
00:46:58seen my woman
00:46:59asleep and my
00:47:01children asleep
00:47:01in my bed and
00:47:02you look at her
00:47:03little face and
00:47:03thinks she has
00:47:05all the faith in
00:47:06the world that
00:47:06I'm going to
00:47:07pull this out.
00:47:08She knows I'm
00:47:09going to do it.
00:47:10She knows I'm
00:47:11going to save
00:47:11them, even
00:47:13though I know
00:47:14how the heck
00:47:14am I going to
00:47:15do that.
00:47:18We went
00:47:18through hard
00:47:19times, but
00:47:21maybe I'm
00:47:21oblivious, but
00:47:23I only remember
00:47:23good things, and
00:47:24my dad was
00:47:25just very
00:47:26consistent, so
00:47:27if we were
00:47:28going through
00:47:29anything like
00:47:30that, I
00:47:31never experienced
00:47:32it.
00:47:33Hi, everybody.
00:47:35We sure have
00:47:35a good time
00:47:36out here in
00:47:361989.
00:47:38We sure are
00:47:38back here in
00:47:39the past with
00:47:39us.
00:47:42Dinner on
00:47:42the table
00:47:43every night,
00:47:44school the
00:47:45next day, we
00:47:45had everything
00:47:46we needed.
00:47:47We never
00:47:47went without.
00:47:49We were
00:47:50always taken
00:47:50care of.
00:47:53That's the
00:47:53motive right
00:47:54there.
00:47:55They love
00:47:56you.
00:47:56They need
00:47:57you.
00:47:57And so you
00:47:58keep making
00:47:59it happen.
00:47:59You don't
00:48:00give up.
00:48:03That kept
00:48:03me going.
00:48:07That was
00:48:09really hard on
00:48:10my dad.
00:48:13I can't
00:48:14imagine the
00:48:14pressure that
00:48:15they felt as
00:48:15dads with
00:48:17kids, my
00:48:17dad and
00:48:18Uncle
00:48:18Kerry especially.
00:48:24It was
00:48:25hard and
00:48:25he did
00:48:25want the
00:48:26best for
00:48:26our family.
00:48:31He always
00:48:32took time
00:48:33for Lacey
00:48:34and I
00:48:34to play
00:48:35with us.
00:48:43He loved
00:48:44being outside.
00:48:44He loved
00:48:45riding horses.
00:48:46He loved
00:48:47photography.
00:48:51Well, I guess
00:48:51my weakness
00:48:52is this camera
00:48:53right here.
00:48:54I take
00:48:54pictures of
00:48:55everything.
00:48:56Everything they
00:48:57did, I was
00:48:57kind of like
00:48:58a camera buff.
00:49:01He could have
00:49:01done so many
00:49:02other things,
00:49:02but he was
00:49:03so great
00:49:03wrestling.
00:49:06Gary knows
00:49:07this crowd
00:49:08is behind
00:49:08him.
00:49:10It was a
00:49:11lot of fun
00:49:12seeing daddy.
00:49:13We were at
00:49:14the matches
00:49:14a ton.
00:49:16Get to
00:49:16play in
00:49:16the ring.
00:49:17I mean,
00:49:18a little girl
00:49:18should not
00:49:19have been up
00:49:19that late.
00:49:20But that
00:49:21was my
00:49:21special time
00:49:21with my
00:49:22dad.
00:49:23And who
00:49:23is this
00:49:23gorgeous
00:49:24young lady
00:49:24you got
00:49:24with you?
00:49:25Well,
00:49:25this is my
00:49:25little girl
00:49:25Holly,
00:49:26but you
00:49:26know,
00:49:26I have
00:49:27such high
00:49:27expectations.
00:49:28I think
00:49:28he loved
00:49:29wrestling.
00:49:30I just
00:49:30think it
00:49:30got to a
00:49:31point with
00:49:32all of
00:49:32the other
00:49:32things with
00:49:33losing your
00:49:33brothers that
00:49:34it became
00:49:35less of
00:49:35something he
00:49:36probably loved
00:49:36and more of
00:49:37like a job
00:49:38maybe.
00:49:40And that's
00:49:41basically,
00:49:41I believe,
00:49:42when Kerry
00:49:42started to
00:49:43make the
00:49:43transition over
00:49:44to WWE,
00:49:47which was
00:49:47really hard
00:49:48for him
00:49:49because,
00:49:50you know,
00:49:51he wanted
00:49:51to be with
00:49:52the family,
00:49:53but it
00:49:54was more
00:49:54money.
00:49:55Right now,
00:49:56here he comes
00:49:56in his
00:49:57debut,
00:49:58his very
00:49:59first appearance
00:50:00in the
00:50:00World Wrestling
00:50:01Federation.
00:50:01They call
00:50:02him the
00:50:03Texas Tornado.
00:50:04Kerry Von
00:50:05Eric.
00:50:07When he
00:50:08came to
00:50:08the WWE,
00:50:10the name
00:50:11along with
00:50:11the look,
00:50:12the girls
00:50:13loved him.
00:50:14He had a
00:50:15great fan
00:50:16following.
00:50:18The kids
00:50:19loved him,
00:50:19you know,
00:50:19and he had
00:50:20that little
00:50:20spin and
00:50:21the punch.
00:50:28And he
00:50:28was a good
00:50:29worker in
00:50:29the ring.
00:50:30His potential
00:50:31was unlimited.
00:50:34You know,
00:50:34if he could
00:50:34have walked
00:50:34straight and
00:50:35narrow,
00:50:35I think he
00:50:36would have
00:50:36been a great
00:50:37champion for
00:50:37the WWE.
00:50:39He was
00:50:40great for a
00:50:41few months,
00:50:42but again,
00:50:43something just
00:50:44grabs him
00:50:45that took him
00:50:46back down
00:50:47another rabbit
00:50:48hole.
00:50:54There's
00:50:54a totem pole.
00:50:58Come on out,
00:50:58Chris,
00:50:58do a little,
00:50:59maybe a little
00:50:59rain dance.
00:51:00We sure need
00:51:00some rain.
00:51:01I'll come out
00:51:01flex for you.
00:51:02That'll be good.
00:51:04My place.
00:51:06It hurts.
00:51:07This is
00:51:08Chris's hill.
00:51:11And he and
00:51:12Mike build
00:51:13most of this
00:51:13stuff up here.
00:51:15My uncle
00:51:16Chris had
00:51:16a hill.
00:51:18It was such
00:51:19a special place
00:51:19to him.
00:51:20He was up
00:51:21there all
00:51:21the time.
00:51:22That was
00:51:22his space.
00:51:23It was a
00:51:23very sacred
00:51:24place to
00:51:25him.
00:51:26Yeah,
00:51:27he was so
00:51:27loving,
00:51:28and he did
00:51:28love nature.
00:51:29He always
00:51:29had a pet.
00:51:31A little
00:51:31baby rabbit's
00:51:32been born
00:51:32inside the
00:51:33teepee.
00:51:34Yeah,
00:51:34opened their
00:51:34eyes about
00:51:35two days
00:51:35ago.
00:51:36Just opened
00:51:37their eyes.
00:51:38Here they are
00:51:39down in here.
00:51:40There's one
00:51:41little male.
00:51:43Oh, you
00:51:43know whether
00:51:44they're girls
00:51:44or boys yet
00:51:45already, huh?
00:51:45Yes,
00:51:45there's two
00:51:46males.
00:51:47He was
00:51:48secluded a
00:51:49lot.
00:51:50He seemed
00:51:51sad.
00:51:53He was just
00:51:54kind of
00:51:54disappointed
00:51:55in life
00:51:56in general.
00:51:59I always
00:52:00had a
00:52:01sympathy
00:52:02for Uncle
00:52:03Chris because
00:52:03he just
00:52:04was obviously
00:52:06not like
00:52:07my other
00:52:08uncles,
00:52:09and he
00:52:09definitely
00:52:10felt it.
00:52:12but he
00:52:12was determined
00:52:13to be as
00:52:15much like
00:52:15his big
00:52:16brothers as
00:52:16possible.
00:52:34Chris was
00:52:35very sick
00:52:36with asthma
00:52:37and
00:52:37unfortunately
00:52:38what
00:52:38prednisone did
00:52:39to Chris
00:52:40was stunned
00:52:41at his
00:52:41growth.
00:52:42And so
00:52:43in that
00:52:44he was
00:52:45never going
00:52:45to be
00:52:46the size
00:52:46of his
00:52:47brothers.
00:52:48There were
00:52:49times when
00:52:50his dad
00:52:50would explain
00:52:52that to
00:52:52him.
00:52:53You know,
00:52:54son,
00:52:54you're just
00:52:54not built
00:52:55the way
00:52:55you need
00:52:56to be built
00:52:56to be in
00:52:57the ring,
00:52:57but if you
00:52:59want to
00:52:59try,
00:52:59you can
00:52:59try.
00:53:01He worked
00:53:01hard.
00:53:02He worked
00:53:02as hard
00:53:02as Kerry
00:53:03did,
00:53:03but Kerry
00:53:05got the
00:53:05results and
00:53:05Chris didn't.
00:53:07And I'll
00:53:08tell you,
00:53:08too,
00:53:09being his
00:53:09big brother
00:53:10was hard
00:53:11for me
00:53:11because I'm
00:53:11telling him
00:53:12all this
00:53:12time,
00:53:13Chris,
00:53:13if you put
00:53:14your whole
00:53:14heart into
00:53:15it,
00:53:15you'll get
00:53:16as big
00:53:16as Kerry,
00:53:17but it
00:53:18just didn't
00:53:19seem like
00:53:20it was a
00:53:20fair game
00:53:21to Chris.
00:53:21Get a
00:53:22pose for
00:53:22me.
00:53:24He'd been
00:53:25taking this
00:53:26medicine since
00:53:27he was 12
00:53:28years old.
00:53:29But it really
00:53:30changed whenever
00:53:31he had to
00:53:32take the
00:53:33higher dose
00:53:33of prednisone.
00:53:34It changed
00:53:35his moods,
00:53:37and he
00:53:37definitely
00:53:38became more
00:53:39withdrawn and
00:53:40more self-focused.
00:53:44The younger
00:53:45brother wanted
00:53:45to wrestle,
00:53:46and I think
00:53:47he was
00:53:47fixated.
00:53:48That was
00:53:49everything to
00:53:49him.
00:53:53The best
00:53:53gimmick I
00:53:54have is my
00:53:55brothers being
00:53:55who they are.
00:53:56I mean,
00:53:56I'm just
00:53:57following behind.
00:53:58I'll just
00:53:58have this.
00:53:59I'll probably
00:53:59all get a
00:53:59little bit of
00:54:00what Kev
00:54:00has in him,
00:54:01a little bit
00:54:01of what Kerry
00:54:02has in him,
00:54:03a little bit
00:54:03of what Mike
00:54:04has in him,
00:54:04a little bit
00:54:05of what Dave
00:54:05has in him,
00:54:06and just mix
00:54:06it all together
00:54:07and see what
00:54:07we got.
00:54:09I think
00:54:10he tried
00:54:10really hard
00:54:11to be a
00:54:12wrestler.
00:54:12Chris
00:54:13Von Allen
00:54:13into the
00:54:14ring.
00:54:16He
00:54:16draws
00:54:17Chrissy
00:54:17and
00:54:18nails
00:54:18him.
00:54:20Listen,
00:54:20my brother
00:54:21gave you
00:54:21a shot.
00:54:22He gave
00:54:22you the
00:54:23world.
00:54:23He gave
00:54:23you the
00:54:23Texas
00:54:24title,
00:54:24gave
00:54:24you a
00:54:25shot
00:54:25at the
00:54:25world
00:54:25title,
00:54:25and I
00:54:26might
00:54:26add,
00:54:27you
00:54:27were
00:54:27beaten
00:54:27in
00:54:28record.
00:54:28Hey!
00:54:29Hey,
00:54:29Matt,
00:54:29please!
00:54:30Wait a
00:54:31minute!
00:54:32His body
00:54:33wasn't made
00:54:33for it.
00:54:34His bones
00:54:35were brittle,
00:54:36and they
00:54:36break
00:54:37easy.
00:54:39This is
00:54:41not made
00:54:41for people
00:54:42with brittle
00:54:42bones.
00:54:43Chris
00:54:44worked so
00:54:44hard,
00:54:46then he
00:54:47breaks his
00:54:47arm,
00:54:48and it's
00:54:49almost like
00:54:50start over.
00:54:51He
00:54:51couldn't
00:54:52deal with
00:54:52it.
00:54:53You
00:54:54could
00:54:54really
00:54:55see a
00:54:56difference
00:54:56in,
00:54:57you know,
00:54:58his zeal
00:54:58for life
00:54:59after that.
00:55:00I mean,
00:55:01even as a
00:55:0110-year-old,
00:55:02I was so
00:55:03hyper-aware
00:55:04of depression
00:55:05and of
00:55:06just
00:55:07I
00:55:08didn't
00:55:08want
00:55:08the
00:55:08grown-ups
00:55:09around
00:55:09me
00:55:09to
00:55:09ever
00:55:10get
00:55:10too
00:55:10sad.
00:55:11I
00:55:11just
00:55:11felt
00:55:12like
00:55:12if
00:55:13they
00:55:13get
00:55:14really
00:55:14sad,
00:55:15they're
00:55:15going
00:55:15to
00:55:15commit
00:55:16suicide.
00:55:16It was
00:55:17just
00:55:17constantly
00:55:18on my
00:55:18mind.
00:55:18It felt
00:55:19like such
00:55:19a
00:55:19realistic
00:55:20possibility,
00:55:21especially
00:55:21with Uncle
00:55:22Chris,
00:55:22because I
00:55:23knew how
00:55:24he felt
00:55:25like he
00:55:25had been
00:55:25treated
00:55:26by the
00:55:26world.
00:55:31The
00:55:31doctor told
00:55:32him he
00:55:32just
00:55:32might
00:55:33never
00:55:33be
00:55:33able
00:55:33to
00:55:33go
00:55:33back
00:55:34and
00:55:34arrest
00:55:34him.
00:55:34He
00:55:35just
00:55:35destroyed
00:55:35Chris.
00:55:40Chris went
00:55:41into the
00:55:41woods
00:55:42behind
00:55:42his
00:55:42family
00:55:43ranch
00:55:43and
00:55:43just
00:55:44like
00:55:44his
00:55:44brother
00:55:44Mike,
00:55:45he took
00:55:46his
00:55:46life.
00:55:49Went
00:55:49up
00:55:49there
00:55:49and
00:55:51he
00:55:51had
00:55:51just
00:55:52done
00:55:52it.
00:55:53It
00:55:53just
00:55:54happened.
00:55:55And so
00:55:56when I
00:55:56get there,
00:55:57he's
00:55:57laying on
00:55:58the ground
00:55:58like this
00:55:59and he's
00:55:59going
00:55:59up,
00:56:00up,
00:56:01up.
00:56:02So I
00:56:02thought
00:56:04maybe he's
00:56:04choking
00:56:05on some
00:56:05pills or
00:56:06something.
00:56:07So I
00:56:07put my
00:56:09arm around
00:56:09his arm
00:56:10and this
00:56:11hand under
00:56:12his head
00:56:12to lean
00:56:12him up,
00:56:13sit up
00:56:13with me
00:56:14and my
00:56:16thumb
00:56:16went in
00:56:16the spot.
00:56:17That
00:56:18hot blood
00:56:19told me
00:56:19right off
00:56:20it was.
00:56:21I told
00:56:22mom he
00:56:22sucked
00:56:22himself.
00:56:26I
00:56:27think to
00:56:27myself,
00:56:28like,
00:56:28why does
00:56:29this keep
00:56:29happening
00:56:30to this
00:56:31family?
00:56:32Was it
00:56:33the pressure
00:56:33of the
00:56:34wrestling
00:56:34business,
00:56:35the pressure
00:56:35of family,
00:56:36the pressure
00:56:36of the
00:56:37fans?
00:56:38Was it
00:56:39just like
00:56:41an issue
00:56:41of mental
00:56:42health
00:56:42struggles?
00:56:43Or was
00:56:44it just
00:56:44as simple
00:56:44as sometimes
00:56:45bad things
00:56:46happen to
00:56:47otherwise
00:56:48good people?
00:56:51That hit
00:56:52her so
00:56:53hard that
00:56:54my mother
00:56:55kind of
00:56:55changed.
00:56:56She loved
00:56:57so deep
00:56:58and so
00:56:58hard that
00:57:00it took
00:57:02something out
00:57:02of her.
00:57:03It crushed
00:57:04her.
00:57:06Her priorities
00:57:07changed.
00:57:09I walked
00:57:10over to my
00:57:11grandparents'
00:57:11house and
00:57:13Mimi was
00:57:13outside
00:57:14leaning
00:57:15against
00:57:15the
00:57:15column
00:57:16and
00:57:16she
00:57:17just
00:57:17put
00:57:17her
00:57:17arm
00:57:18out
00:57:18and
00:57:19she
00:57:20said,
00:57:21I'm
00:57:21going to
00:57:21divorce
00:57:22your
00:57:22granddad.
00:57:24I'm going
00:57:25to go find
00:57:25happiness for
00:57:26myself.
00:57:27You know,
00:57:28I'm sick
00:57:29of all this
00:57:30grief and
00:57:31trauma and
00:57:32I'm going to
00:57:34go be happy.
00:57:34get your shot
00:57:38here.
00:57:39My mom
00:57:40flat out
00:57:40blamed him.
00:57:41I mean,
00:57:41right out.
00:57:42You did it,
00:57:43you know,
00:57:44with your
00:57:47pressure on
00:57:48football,
00:57:48pressure.
00:57:49Each of these
00:57:50boys
00:57:50and this
00:57:53women
00:57:53are going
00:57:54to be
00:57:54world heavyweight
00:57:55champions.
00:57:56My dad
00:57:56never pushed
00:57:57us into
00:57:58anything
00:57:58really like
00:57:59that,
00:57:59but my
00:58:01mother blamed
00:58:01him and
00:58:02blamed him
00:58:03for not being
00:58:04home.
00:58:05It's always
00:58:05on the road.
00:58:08But my dad
00:58:09knew that
00:58:09she was
00:58:10not herself
00:58:11and dad
00:58:12would just
00:58:12take it.
00:58:13He just
00:58:13let her
00:58:14say anything
00:58:16and
00:58:16it shouldn't
00:58:22have been
00:58:22like that,
00:58:23but
00:58:25she
00:58:25hated him.
00:58:29All she
00:58:29could think
00:58:30is getting
00:58:30us back.
00:58:31All she
00:58:31could think
00:58:32is this
00:58:33world hates
00:58:33me and
00:58:34I hate
00:58:34it.
00:58:36It was
00:58:36just like
00:58:39so unbecoming
00:58:40of what
00:58:40she really
00:58:41was.
00:58:44And I've
00:58:45never told
00:58:46the soul
00:58:46this story.
00:58:47In the Bible
00:58:48it says
00:58:48honor our
00:58:49father and
00:58:49mother.
00:58:51So I
00:58:51sure don't
00:58:52like telling
00:58:52that,
00:58:53but I want
00:58:54you to know
00:58:54that my dad
00:58:56was a good
00:58:57man and
00:58:57don't blame
00:58:58blame him
00:58:59for this
00:58:59stuff.
00:59:00I'm almost
00:59:01weak.
00:59:04God bless
00:59:05her.
00:59:10from one
00:59:11of the
00:59:11greatest
00:59:11wrestling
00:59:12families in
00:59:13the history
00:59:13of wrestling,
00:59:14Kerry Von
00:59:14Eric.
00:59:15He looked
00:59:15like he
00:59:16was cut
00:59:16out of
00:59:17granite and
00:59:17looked like
00:59:18he was a
00:59:18superhero.
00:59:19He was the
00:59:20quintessential
00:59:20athlete for
00:59:22that era in
00:59:23WWE.
00:59:24Tremendous
00:59:25physique,
00:59:26tremendous
00:59:27agility,
00:59:28tremendous
00:59:29ability.
00:59:31He was
00:59:31making more
00:59:32money up
00:59:33there than
00:59:34he had ever
00:59:34made in his
00:59:36popularity.
00:59:37I mean,
00:59:37they used him
00:59:37real well.
00:59:38He was
00:59:38Intercontinental
00:59:39Champion.
00:59:40Oh,
00:59:40wow!
00:59:41What a
00:59:42punch!
00:59:42One,
00:59:43two,
00:59:44three,
00:59:44we have a
00:59:45new champion!
00:59:51I love
00:59:52seeing that
00:59:52in the TV.
00:59:53I loved it.
00:59:54When I got
00:59:54to go with
00:59:55him, it was
00:59:55thrilling.
00:59:58We have so
00:59:58much fun
00:59:59together,
00:59:59like on
01:00:00the airplanes.
01:00:00He always
01:00:01had a
01:00:01Walkman.
01:00:02Daddy loved
01:00:03music and
01:00:03like we'd
01:00:04share it and
01:00:04listen to
01:00:05songs together.
01:00:07There was a
01:00:08song called
01:00:08Skyline Pigeon
01:00:09by Elton John
01:00:10and it was
01:00:12about this
01:00:13caged bird
01:00:17and oh,
01:00:18gosh,
01:00:19sorry.
01:00:19I shouldn't
01:00:20have mentioned
01:00:20that one.
01:00:22Sorry.
01:00:23I shouldn't
01:00:23have talked
01:00:24to it.
01:00:25Sorry.
01:00:29There's a
01:00:29bird that
01:00:30just longs
01:00:30to be free.
01:00:31So to
01:00:32me,
01:00:33I feel
01:00:33like daddy
01:00:34may have
01:00:35felt caged
01:00:36at that
01:00:37time to
01:00:38his,
01:00:39maybe his
01:00:39career or
01:00:41maybe to
01:00:41his addiction.
01:00:42Maybe he
01:00:42just, you
01:00:43know, wanted
01:00:43to be free
01:00:44of this
01:00:46thing that
01:00:47held him
01:00:47captive.
01:00:49And then
01:00:50to also be
01:00:50separated from
01:00:51your kids and
01:00:52your wife
01:00:52being on the
01:00:53road doing
01:00:53your job.
01:00:59These are
01:01:00my most
01:01:01prized
01:01:01possession.
01:01:03My notes
01:01:03and my
01:01:04postcards
01:01:04from my
01:01:04dad.
01:01:05There's
01:01:05lots of
01:01:06little bits
01:01:07of advice
01:01:07in here.
01:01:09Like this
01:01:09one says,
01:01:10hey,
01:01:10Hall, I
01:01:11know things
01:01:11are tough
01:01:11sometimes,
01:01:12but sometimes
01:01:13life ain't
01:01:13easy.
01:01:14And for
01:01:14things in
01:01:15life to
01:01:15be easy,
01:01:15something's
01:01:16got to be
01:01:16hard.
01:01:17But one
01:01:17thing's for
01:01:18sure, your
01:01:18mom and
01:01:18dad will
01:01:19always love
01:01:19you more
01:01:19than
01:01:20anything.
01:01:22Remember,
01:01:23I'll be
01:01:23home soon.
01:01:24This show
01:01:25biz stuff
01:01:25is for
01:01:26the birds.
01:01:26And I
01:01:27feel like
01:01:28one cheap
01:01:28cheap.
01:01:29I sure
01:01:29do miss
01:01:30you.
01:01:30I'm still
01:01:30fighting to
01:01:33get home
01:01:33to you.
01:01:35He had
01:01:36to be
01:01:36on the
01:01:36road.
01:01:37You
01:01:37have to
01:01:38provide.
01:01:40There's
01:01:40an image
01:01:41he had
01:01:41to hold
01:01:41up,
01:01:42and then
01:01:42there's
01:01:43pressure
01:01:43to keep
01:01:44that
01:01:44name
01:01:44alive.
01:01:47Daddy
01:01:48was kind
01:01:48of alone
01:01:49at WWE.
01:01:52Grief
01:01:52works
01:01:52when
01:01:53you're
01:01:53alone.
01:01:55But when
01:01:55you're all
01:01:55together,
01:01:56it's easy
01:01:56to be
01:01:56happy and
01:01:57jovial.
01:01:58And Kerry
01:01:59was all
01:01:59about fun
01:02:00and loving
01:02:00each other
01:02:01and cracking
01:02:01you up.
01:02:02All he
01:02:02wanted to
01:02:03do is
01:02:03make you
01:02:04laugh.
01:02:06I know
01:02:06that it
01:02:07hurt so
01:02:07bad when
01:02:08he stepped
01:02:08on his
01:02:09bad leg.
01:02:10He said
01:02:11it was
01:02:11like a
01:02:12flash of
01:02:13light.
01:02:15Kerry
01:02:16was in a
01:02:16lot of
01:02:16pain.
01:02:17I mean,
01:02:17a lot of
01:02:18pain.
01:02:18And he
01:02:19would go
01:02:20out there
01:02:20and wrestle
01:02:20for however
01:02:21long you
01:02:22wanted him
01:02:22to.
01:02:23I mean,
01:02:23talk about
01:02:23an athlete.
01:02:24I mean,
01:02:24he's a
01:02:25peg-legged
01:02:25guy out
01:02:26there.
01:02:27Look out!
01:02:28The whirling
01:02:29dermis
01:02:30spinning
01:02:30tornado!
01:02:31It's all
01:02:32over!
01:02:33Made it
01:02:33look easy!
01:02:34He continued
01:02:35to go out
01:02:36there and
01:02:37perform the
01:02:37way that he
01:02:38did.
01:02:38It's nothing
01:02:39short of
01:02:39amazing.
01:02:40That was
01:02:41crazy what
01:02:42he was
01:02:42doing.
01:02:42But Kerry
01:02:43was in a
01:02:43lot of
01:02:43pain.
01:02:45He was
01:02:46hurt not
01:02:46only
01:02:47physically
01:02:48but
01:02:50emotionally
01:02:50as well.
01:02:53Kerry
01:02:53was
01:02:55very
01:02:55particular
01:02:56in
01:02:57hiding it
01:02:57and protecting
01:02:58it.
01:02:58Kerry
01:02:59dressed
01:02:59separately
01:03:00from
01:03:00everybody
01:03:00else.
01:03:02And if
01:03:03you didn't
01:03:03know,
01:03:04you didn't
01:03:04know.
01:03:06Vince
01:03:06wanted to
01:03:06see it.
01:03:08And in
01:03:09seeing it
01:03:10and seeing
01:03:10how well
01:03:11he moved
01:03:12and everything
01:03:12that he
01:03:12did,
01:03:13it was
01:03:13like,
01:03:13my God,
01:03:15you're a
01:03:15miracle.
01:03:17Let's
01:03:18tell this
01:03:18story.
01:03:20And
01:03:22Kerry,
01:03:23I believe,
01:03:23was originally
01:03:24on board
01:03:25with that
01:03:26and his
01:03:27father did
01:03:28not want
01:03:28that to
01:03:28happen.
01:03:33Kerry's
01:03:33come to
01:03:34his father's
01:03:34wishes and
01:03:35kept it
01:03:36a secret.
01:03:40We went
01:03:41to Japan
01:03:41a lot
01:03:42together.
01:03:42We were
01:03:42coming back
01:03:42from Japan.
01:03:43We decided
01:03:44to stop in
01:03:44Hawaii for
01:03:45a couple
01:03:45days.
01:03:46He wanted
01:03:47to go
01:03:47diving
01:03:47with me.
01:03:48So we
01:03:49got with
01:03:50the company
01:03:50and we
01:03:50went out
01:03:51and rented
01:03:51all the
01:03:52gear we
01:03:52needed.
01:03:53Get ready
01:03:53to go
01:03:54in.
01:03:54He had
01:03:54his jeans
01:03:55on.
01:03:55You can't
01:03:56go diving
01:03:56with a pair
01:03:57of jeans
01:03:57on and
01:03:58your boots
01:03:59on.
01:03:59You need
01:04:00flippers
01:04:00to move
01:04:01around.
01:04:01and I
01:04:02don't
01:04:03take my
01:04:03jeans
01:04:03off.
01:04:04I'm
01:04:04embarrassed.
01:04:06Having
01:04:07that
01:04:07great
01:04:07of a
01:04:08body
01:04:08to
01:04:08be
01:04:08imperfect
01:04:09from
01:04:10his
01:04:10mind,
01:04:11not
01:04:11having
01:04:11that
01:04:12foot,
01:04:12not
01:04:12being
01:04:12a
01:04:12whole
01:04:13person
01:04:14again,
01:04:15it can
01:04:16weigh on
01:04:17you mentally.
01:04:18He saw
01:04:19it as a
01:04:19sign of
01:04:20weakness.
01:04:21So I
01:04:22think to
01:04:23avoid the
01:04:24scariness of
01:04:25all of
01:04:25that,
01:04:26he would
01:04:28take some
01:04:28pills to
01:04:29try and
01:04:30help him
01:04:30feel better
01:04:31through it.
01:04:32You talk
01:04:33yourself into
01:04:34so much
01:04:34stuff when
01:04:35you're making
01:04:36excuses of
01:04:36why you're
01:04:37getting high
01:04:37and why
01:04:38you're
01:04:38getting drunk,
01:04:39and they
01:04:40all work.
01:04:42I have to
01:04:42take this
01:04:43or I can't
01:04:43perform.
01:04:44If I can't
01:04:45perform,
01:04:45I don't
01:04:46get paid.
01:04:46If I don't
01:04:47get paid,
01:04:47we don't
01:04:48pay our
01:04:48bills.
01:04:48We don't
01:04:49have a
01:04:49house.
01:04:49We don't
01:04:50have a
01:04:50car.
01:04:51How's
01:04:51the kids
01:04:51going to
01:04:51get this
01:04:52or that?
01:04:55Unfortunately,
01:04:55I do remember
01:04:56times where
01:04:57he wasn't
01:04:58exactly
01:04:59sober.
01:05:00Like,
01:05:01my mom,
01:05:02we were
01:05:02late to
01:05:03pick her
01:05:03up for
01:05:03the hairdresser,
01:05:04so we
01:05:04drove on
01:05:04the sidewalk
01:05:05all the way
01:05:05there because
01:05:06there was
01:05:06traffic,
01:05:07so we'd
01:05:07just go
01:05:07on the
01:05:07sidewalk.
01:05:08Things
01:05:09like that
01:05:09that were
01:05:09very
01:05:09dangerous
01:05:10let us
01:05:10drive in
01:05:12his lap
01:05:12on a
01:05:12highway
01:05:13going over
01:05:13100 miles
01:05:14an hour.
01:05:15I remember
01:05:16when I was
01:05:17an adult
01:05:17just looking
01:05:18back like,
01:05:19oh,
01:05:20yeah,
01:05:21you weren't
01:05:21sober.
01:05:22Got it.
01:05:25Daddy was
01:05:26visiting a
01:05:27friend that
01:05:27was a
01:05:27wrestler,
01:05:28and the
01:05:29police came
01:05:30and raided
01:05:30his car
01:05:31and then
01:05:32took him
01:05:32to jail
01:05:33and then
01:05:34put me and
01:05:34Lacey in a
01:05:35different police
01:05:35car.
01:05:36That was
01:05:37pretty terrible.
01:05:40At one point,
01:05:42he was digging
01:05:42in his arms
01:05:43looking for
01:05:44spiders and
01:05:45be like,
01:05:45baby girl,
01:05:45do you see
01:05:46it moving?
01:05:47And of
01:05:48course,
01:05:48I'd play
01:05:48into it and
01:05:49be like,
01:05:49yeah,
01:05:49daddy,
01:05:49you see it.
01:05:50you know.
01:05:52Yeah.
01:05:58As a mom,
01:05:59when she comes
01:05:59home and
01:05:59tells me that,
01:06:00I'm like,
01:06:01you were where
01:06:02in a hotel room
01:06:02with your daddy
01:06:03and he thought
01:06:03he had spiders?
01:06:06They were so
01:06:07young,
01:06:07they didn't know
01:06:08that that's
01:06:09really not a
01:06:10good place
01:06:10for your
01:06:10children to be.
01:06:12Carrie threatened
01:06:13me with things
01:06:14like,
01:06:15I'm going
01:06:15to plant
01:06:16drugs on you
01:06:17and make you
01:06:17look like an
01:06:17unfit mom if
01:06:18you try to
01:06:19divorce me.
01:06:20So there was
01:06:20that fear of
01:06:21I'm going to
01:06:23look like the
01:06:23bad guy and
01:06:24be the bad
01:06:25mom because
01:06:26he's a
01:06:26Bon Eric.
01:06:27So even the
01:06:28police would
01:06:29side with him
01:06:30if there was
01:06:31a domestic
01:06:32dispute.
01:06:33It's actually
01:06:34the first time
01:06:35I've ever
01:06:35spoken about
01:06:36my relationship
01:06:37with Carrie
01:06:38on camera.
01:06:39So it's
01:06:42very hard.
01:06:45I did try
01:06:46to get him
01:06:47back into
01:06:47rehab again.
01:06:48I had talking
01:06:49to Kevin
01:06:50and we did
01:06:51another intervention
01:06:52but it just
01:06:54wasn't going
01:06:55to happen again
01:06:56in our time
01:06:57together.
01:06:59I had to
01:07:00leave the
01:07:00marriage and
01:07:01not because
01:07:01I didn't love
01:07:02him.
01:07:02It was hard
01:07:03for me to
01:07:03leave the
01:07:04marriage because
01:07:04of my faith
01:07:05as well.
01:07:07Of all the
01:07:07things I could
01:07:08handle,
01:07:09adultery was
01:07:10not one of
01:07:11them.
01:07:12And
01:07:14that was
01:07:14super hard
01:07:15on me.
01:07:16And I know
01:07:17he loved
01:07:18me.
01:07:18I know
01:07:18he did.
01:07:19He just
01:07:20wanted to
01:07:20have both
01:07:20lives.
01:07:23When he
01:07:23was working
01:07:24as Texas
01:07:25Tornado
01:07:26with WWE,
01:07:27I know
01:07:28they wanted
01:07:28him to
01:07:29go to
01:07:29Betty Ford
01:07:30and he
01:07:30did.
01:07:31He went.
01:07:33I could
01:07:33see the
01:07:34struggle
01:07:34with Carrie
01:07:35really trying
01:07:37to come
01:07:38out of what
01:07:39he's already
01:07:39done to
01:07:40himself and
01:07:42come back
01:07:44to Carrie
01:07:45Atkison.
01:07:47But it
01:07:48was just
01:07:48so far
01:07:49gone.
01:07:55People
01:07:56wanted to
01:07:56help
01:07:56Carrie.
01:07:58Everybody
01:07:59liked him
01:08:00so much.
01:08:01He was
01:08:01one of the
01:08:02most
01:08:02lovable.
01:08:03Just,
01:08:04God,
01:08:04man,
01:08:05the soul
01:08:06of Carrie
01:08:07Von
01:08:07Airt
01:08:08was just
01:08:09pure.
01:08:10So you
01:08:11wanted to
01:08:11help him
01:08:12and it
01:08:13just became
01:08:13a problem.
01:08:16But that
01:08:16was ultimately
01:08:17what led
01:08:18to his
01:08:19demise was
01:08:20the substance
01:08:20abuse.
01:08:22So WWE
01:08:24let Carrie
01:08:25go.
01:08:30When I
01:08:30talk about
01:08:31Carrie's
01:08:31life,
01:08:32he's a 32
01:08:33year old
01:08:33and he's
01:08:3430 of
01:08:34those years
01:08:35she was
01:08:35a great
01:08:37guy.
01:08:38Just drugs
01:08:39did that
01:08:39to him.
01:08:41I thought
01:08:42if I could
01:08:42get him
01:08:43away from
01:08:43the drugs
01:08:44we'd go
01:08:45up to
01:08:45the Northwest
01:08:46Territory
01:08:47up near
01:08:47Alaska.
01:08:48There's no
01:08:49drug dealers
01:08:50up there
01:08:50and we're
01:08:52going to
01:08:52go bear
01:08:52hunting.
01:08:56We didn't
01:08:57ever make
01:08:57it.
01:08:59As a matter
01:09:00of fact,
01:09:01Carrie
01:09:01had another
01:09:02arrest.
01:09:03I was
01:09:04going to
01:09:04go to
01:09:04prison
01:09:04this
01:09:05time.
01:09:07He's
01:09:08already
01:09:08on
01:09:08felony
01:09:08probation
01:09:09when that
01:09:10happened,
01:09:11when he
01:09:11got busted
01:09:12for the
01:09:12cocaine
01:09:12there.
01:09:13I think
01:09:14it started
01:09:14going
01:09:14through
01:09:15his
01:09:15head.
01:09:15He's
01:09:15like,
01:09:17man,
01:09:17I'm
01:09:17going to
01:09:17go to
01:09:17prison
01:09:18and I'm
01:09:19going to
01:09:19have
01:09:20half my
01:09:20foot
01:09:21and
01:09:21everything.
01:09:24He
01:09:24asked
01:09:25me to
01:09:26go to
01:09:26lunch
01:09:27with
01:09:27him.
01:09:29He
01:09:29looked
01:09:30so broken
01:09:30when I
01:09:31saw him.
01:09:32I could
01:09:32tell
01:09:33he'd
01:09:33been
01:09:34on a
01:09:34binge
01:09:34because
01:09:35he
01:09:35just
01:09:35had
01:09:36that
01:09:36look.
01:09:37He asked
01:09:38me to
01:09:38put our
01:09:39family back
01:09:39together that
01:09:40day.
01:09:41We were
01:09:42already
01:09:43divorced.
01:09:44Ultimately,
01:09:45I reminded
01:09:46him of
01:09:47everything that
01:09:47we had
01:09:48been through
01:09:48and his
01:09:50reaction
01:09:50was,
01:09:53today I
01:09:54will walk
01:09:54with my
01:09:56brothers in
01:09:57heaven.
01:10:01I've
01:10:01heard him
01:10:02say little
01:10:03things like
01:10:04that before
01:10:06and I
01:10:06reminded him
01:10:07of our
01:10:07girls and
01:10:08I said,
01:10:09you know,
01:10:09they need
01:10:10you.
01:10:10And the
01:10:11last thing
01:10:12he said
01:10:12to me
01:10:12was,
01:10:14they're
01:10:14going to
01:10:14be better
01:10:15off without
01:10:15me.
01:10:17And I
01:10:18got up
01:10:19and went
01:10:20back to
01:10:20work and
01:10:21within an
01:10:22hour I
01:10:23got a call
01:10:23from Mr.
01:10:24Atkinson
01:10:25that he had
01:10:26done it,
01:10:27that he had
01:10:28taken his
01:10:28life.
01:10:38news of
01:10:38Kerry's death
01:10:39seemed more
01:10:40than family
01:10:40members could
01:10:41take.
01:10:42Those close
01:10:42to him knew
01:10:43he had been
01:10:43despondent.
01:10:44He's had
01:10:45some more
01:10:45problems,
01:10:46which is
01:10:47no secret.
01:10:48And they
01:10:49just piled up
01:10:50to the point
01:10:50where he
01:10:50couldn't take
01:10:51it anymore.
01:10:53And he
01:10:54came out
01:10:54here about
01:10:541.30 this
01:10:55afternoon and
01:10:58said,
01:10:58Dad,
01:10:58I'd like
01:10:58to take
01:10:59the jeep
01:10:59and just
01:11:04go back
01:11:04to a quiet
01:11:05spot for
01:11:05a while and
01:11:06I should
01:11:06have realized
01:11:06then what
01:11:08he had
01:11:08in mind.
01:11:13Showing
01:11:13himself in
01:11:14the heart
01:11:14with that
01:11:15.44 Magnum.
01:11:16In the
01:11:17heart.
01:11:20It's just
01:11:21in the
01:11:22family
01:11:23dynamic.
01:11:24It's almost
01:11:24like if
01:11:25one commits
01:11:26suicide,
01:11:28it's almost
01:11:28like giving
01:11:29permission for
01:11:29the next
01:11:30one and
01:11:30the next
01:11:31one.
01:11:32It was just
01:11:33almost like,
01:11:35I don't want
01:11:35to say a
01:11:36need, but
01:11:36like, well,
01:11:38my brother did
01:11:38it, so can I
01:11:41or so should
01:11:42I, I don't
01:11:42know.
01:11:43It was just,
01:11:44it was really
01:11:45hard.
01:11:47You see all
01:11:48the tragicness
01:11:49around their
01:11:50lives, and
01:11:51your heart
01:11:51hurts.
01:11:52and people
01:11:53started pointing
01:11:54fingers.
01:11:55Only those
01:11:56who know
01:11:56will ever
01:11:56know.
01:11:57But when
01:11:59you add it
01:11:59all up and
01:12:00you look at
01:12:00it as a
01:12:00whole, you
01:12:01start to
01:12:02think,
01:12:02could they
01:12:03have done
01:12:03something
01:12:03different?
01:12:06Just a lot
01:12:07of heartache,
01:12:07and my mom
01:12:08was really
01:12:09close to my
01:12:10Uncle Kerry,
01:12:11too.
01:12:11I was like
01:12:11her best
01:12:12friend.
01:12:17Everybody
01:12:17loved him,
01:12:18and he
01:12:18was so
01:12:19good inside,
01:12:21but
01:12:23weak mind,
01:12:24drugs,
01:12:25and
01:12:25around
01:12:28that time,
01:12:29my brother
01:12:29Marshall was
01:12:30born.
01:12:32That was
01:12:33the hardest
01:12:33time that
01:12:34I saw in
01:12:35our lives,
01:12:35was when
01:12:37my Uncle
01:12:38Kerry died.
01:12:40He had a
01:12:41deep
01:12:43love.
01:12:44I'm going
01:12:45to say it's
01:12:45selfless,
01:12:46and it was,
01:12:47and I'm
01:12:49telling you
01:12:50this right now
01:12:50because I
01:12:51know when I
01:12:51say Daddy
01:12:52had a
01:12:52selfless love
01:12:53for us,
01:12:53then you
01:12:54think,
01:12:54well,
01:12:54then why
01:12:54did he
01:12:55kill himself
01:12:55and take
01:12:56himself away
01:12:57from you?
01:12:57That was
01:12:58the drugs
01:12:59and the
01:12:59mental health
01:13:00disease,
01:13:00but I
01:13:02always knew
01:13:02his heart
01:13:03and that
01:13:04he loved
01:13:05us deeply.
01:13:06It's like
01:13:07you guys
01:13:07were having
01:13:08so much
01:13:08fun.
01:13:09I'll never
01:13:10find another
01:13:10one like
01:13:11her.
01:13:12That's so
01:13:12cute.
01:13:13He loved
01:13:14you so
01:13:14much.
01:13:15Look how
01:13:16pretty
01:13:16y'all are.
01:13:18You're
01:13:19like,
01:13:19let me
01:13:19stare off
01:13:20into the
01:13:20distance
01:13:20for this
01:13:21one.
01:13:22They're
01:13:22both so
01:13:23photogenic.
01:13:24I know.
01:13:25What a
01:13:25pretty couple.
01:13:26I like
01:13:27this one.
01:13:28Ain't
01:13:28we sweet?
01:13:30How do
01:13:31you feel
01:13:31looking back
01:13:32on this?
01:13:32I feel
01:13:33good about
01:13:33it.
01:13:34This was
01:13:34the sweet
01:13:35Daddy time.
01:13:36Look how
01:13:37sweet he is.
01:13:38Oh,
01:13:38I know.
01:13:38I remember
01:13:39those hands
01:13:40and how
01:13:41gentle they
01:13:41were.
01:13:41Yeah.
01:13:44I was in
01:13:44denial for
01:13:45so long.
01:13:46It was
01:13:47a really
01:13:47hard thing
01:13:48to deal
01:13:48with when
01:13:48you're so
01:13:49little and
01:13:49you love
01:13:49your dad
01:13:50so much.
01:13:51I couldn't
01:13:52hear his
01:13:53name.
01:13:53I couldn't
01:13:53smell his
01:13:54cologne.
01:13:55But then I
01:13:57became the
01:13:57pro wrestler
01:13:57when I got
01:13:58older.
01:14:01She was
01:14:01six when
01:14:02her daddy
01:14:02passed and
01:14:03she really
01:14:04wanted to
01:14:04understand his
01:14:06world and
01:14:07no better way
01:14:08to understand
01:14:09the world than
01:14:10to get in
01:14:11it.
01:14:11And she
01:14:12didn't stay
01:14:12with it long.
01:14:14I got the
01:14:15healing and
01:14:16closure that I
01:14:17needed.
01:14:18But at the
01:14:19time I went to
01:14:20Uncle Kevin
01:14:20and Aunt Pam's
01:14:21house for
01:14:21that.
01:14:22My cousins,
01:14:23Kristen and
01:14:24Ross and
01:14:24Marshall and
01:14:25Jill were our
01:14:26best friends.
01:14:27And they were
01:14:28the only ones
01:14:28that understood
01:14:29the life that
01:14:30we lived.
01:14:33We were like
01:14:34sisters.
01:14:36And I just
01:14:38remember beautiful
01:14:39memories together
01:14:40with my cousins.
01:14:41And we had
01:14:42really good
01:14:43memories with
01:14:44my granddad.
01:14:45And then,
01:14:45you know,
01:14:46his health
01:14:46started to
01:14:47decline.
01:14:51They told
01:14:52him that
01:14:52he had
01:14:52really
01:14:53aggressive
01:14:53lung cancer
01:14:55that had
01:14:55spread and
01:14:56become brain
01:14:57cancer.
01:14:57And he had
01:14:59a very short
01:14:59time to live.
01:15:14Ready?
01:15:15Ready?
01:15:16Okay.
01:15:18The tree!
01:15:20Be careful.
01:15:25I saved you.
01:15:27This is our
01:15:28childhood to a
01:15:29tee.
01:15:33Just thinking about
01:15:34some of my favorite
01:15:35memories of daddy
01:15:35and actually
01:15:37whenever I went
01:15:38to buy this
01:15:39lake house
01:15:40and I walked
01:15:41out here
01:15:41and, like,
01:15:43the sound of it
01:15:43and the smell
01:15:44of it reminded
01:15:45me of, like,
01:15:46being at
01:15:47meeting and
01:15:47granddad's.
01:15:48Aw.
01:15:48Like, all those
01:15:49great memories
01:15:49of our cousins.
01:15:52Well, that's
01:15:53great.
01:15:54I have a lot
01:15:54of good memories
01:15:55of granddad.
01:15:56Look at me.
01:15:58Look at me.
01:15:59I'm a witch.
01:16:00I think that
01:16:01having us
01:16:02was like having
01:16:03his kids back
01:16:04and I think
01:16:05it was his
01:16:06happy place
01:16:06if the grandkids
01:16:08were around.
01:16:08Let's see.
01:16:09Look at your
01:16:09granddaddy.
01:16:13He was like
01:16:13my best friend.
01:16:14I mean,
01:16:15I could not
01:16:15spend enough
01:16:16time with him.
01:16:17All right,
01:16:18look up,
01:16:18everybody.
01:16:19Okay,
01:16:19hold my hand.
01:16:21We had
01:16:22really good
01:16:22memories
01:16:23with my granddad.
01:16:24Oh, my goodness.
01:16:25And then,
01:16:26you know,
01:16:26his health
01:16:27started to decline.
01:16:30When I was 17,
01:16:34granddad started
01:16:35kind of losing
01:16:36his words.
01:16:37He would go out
01:16:38on the tractor
01:16:39for hours
01:16:40and just dig
01:16:41holes for no
01:16:42reason.
01:16:42And when he
01:16:43went to the
01:16:44doctor,
01:16:45they told him
01:16:46that he had
01:16:46really aggressive
01:16:47lung cancer
01:16:49that had spread
01:16:50and become
01:16:50brain cancer
01:16:51and he had
01:16:53a very short
01:16:53time to live.
01:16:59When my
01:16:59granddad passed,
01:17:00that was hard
01:17:01for all of us
01:17:02because that
01:17:03was just,
01:17:05that was the
01:17:06last really,
01:17:06really hard hit.
01:17:10I loved him
01:17:11so much.
01:17:12I really did.
01:17:14But I got to
01:17:15tell you,
01:17:15when he died,
01:17:16that day he died,
01:17:16I was glad.
01:17:17I was glad it
01:17:19was over,
01:17:19his suffering.
01:17:21Go to Jesus
01:17:22where the reward
01:17:23is.
01:17:24I just know
01:17:26the horns
01:17:27are honking
01:17:28and people
01:17:28are cheering
01:17:29when he got
01:17:29to heaven
01:17:29because I'm
01:17:31telling you,
01:17:31he was a good
01:17:32man.
01:17:32He really was.
01:17:37After my
01:17:38granddad died
01:17:39though,
01:17:40my dad,
01:17:42he was okay.
01:17:43You know,
01:17:44he had grieved
01:17:44but he had
01:17:45Ross and Marshall.
01:17:53there was
01:17:54nothing like
01:17:54being a dad
01:17:55to two sons,
01:17:56especially
01:17:57what these
01:17:57boys were
01:17:58on.
01:17:59They wanted
01:18:00to play football
01:18:01and so for my
01:18:02dad I was like,
01:18:02I'm good,
01:18:03I got my
01:18:03brothers back.
01:18:08It's just like
01:18:09my life
01:18:10recycled itself,
01:18:11you know.
01:18:11Now I've got
01:18:12all I have.
01:18:16And anything
01:18:17I do with
01:18:17these boys
01:18:18is just,
01:18:19whether we're
01:18:19fishing or
01:18:20hunting,
01:18:22it's just
01:18:22great.
01:18:25And we were
01:18:27all a big
01:18:27reason for
01:18:28my dad
01:18:28to keep
01:18:28going.
01:18:32But being
01:18:33in Texas
01:18:34was really
01:18:36hard and
01:18:37he did it
01:18:38as long
01:18:38as he
01:18:38could.
01:18:41It was
01:18:41everywhere
01:18:42I went,
01:18:43everything
01:18:43I saw,
01:18:45even the
01:18:46fields and
01:18:47the church
01:18:48bills and
01:18:49school bills,
01:18:50reminding
01:18:50my brothers,
01:18:51you know,
01:18:52everything.
01:18:54And,
01:18:55you know,
01:18:56loved it,
01:18:56but Texas
01:18:59had gotten
01:19:00to be quite
01:19:00a bit of
01:19:01a tight
01:19:02spot.
01:19:03It was a
01:19:04constant,
01:19:05constant
01:19:05reminder of
01:19:06what he
01:19:07didn't have
01:19:07anymore.
01:19:08And Mimi
01:19:09too.
01:19:09Mimi was
01:19:10still alive
01:19:10at the time
01:19:11and just
01:19:12so sad
01:19:14inside.
01:19:16We decided
01:19:17to move
01:19:17to Hawaii.
01:19:19We all
01:19:20felt like
01:19:21she just
01:19:21deserved
01:19:22this
01:19:22beautiful,
01:19:24peaceful
01:19:24place
01:19:25to live
01:19:26out her
01:19:26days.
01:19:28For the
01:19:29time,
01:19:29it was
01:19:29perfect for
01:19:30me.
01:19:31He always
01:19:32talked about
01:19:32moving to
01:19:33Hawaii.
01:19:34He's always
01:19:35loved the
01:19:35ocean.
01:19:36And it was
01:19:37like slow
01:19:38paced.
01:19:39So that
01:19:40was like
01:19:40a perfect
01:19:41place for
01:19:42him.
01:19:44It was a
01:19:44fresh start
01:19:45in a lot
01:19:46of ways.
01:19:46We got
01:19:46to start
01:19:48over
01:19:48without
01:19:49that
01:19:49cloud
01:19:50of pity
01:19:51that people
01:19:52sort of
01:19:52look at
01:19:53you with.
01:19:54We were
01:19:55there 20
01:19:55years and
01:19:56we came
01:19:57back to
01:19:57Texas.
01:19:59What I
01:19:59needed
01:20:00from Hawaii
01:20:00I got.
01:20:02This was
01:20:03kind of
01:20:03the end
01:20:04of the
01:20:04dream.
01:20:04I wanted
01:20:05a rock
01:20:07house by
01:20:07a river
01:20:08and I
01:20:09figured I
01:20:09could have
01:20:09that.
01:20:10I earned
01:20:11that
01:20:12and now
01:20:13here is
01:20:13where I
01:20:14need to
01:20:14be
01:20:14Texas
01:20:15and my
01:20:16Guadalupe
01:20:17River.
01:20:18I could
01:20:18not be
01:20:19happier.
01:20:21Boom.
01:20:22Anybody
01:20:22ready for
01:20:23a good
01:20:23skip?
01:20:25Hey,
01:20:25granddad.
01:20:26Yeah?
01:20:26Watch this.
01:20:31Here go,
01:20:32Colt.
01:20:36Oh,
01:20:36my gosh.
01:20:38Here I can
01:20:38skip.
01:20:38He'll do it
01:20:39on straight
01:20:39out like
01:20:40this where
01:20:40you go.
01:20:43straight
01:20:43on.
01:20:45That a
01:20:45boy.
01:20:46Look,
01:20:46you did
01:20:47it.
01:20:48Ready,
01:20:48guys?
01:20:49Let's
01:20:50launch.
01:20:51One,
01:20:51two,
01:20:52three,
01:20:52go.
01:20:55Watch
01:20:55this one,
01:20:56y'all.
01:20:57Come on,
01:20:57watch this
01:20:57run.
01:21:00Oh,
01:21:00wow.
01:21:01Oh,
01:21:01wait,
01:21:01wait,
01:21:02wait.
01:21:05A lot
01:21:06of people
01:21:06feel sorry
01:21:06for me.
01:21:07I like
01:21:07them to
01:21:07know
01:21:07how happy
01:21:08I am.
01:21:09Ah,
01:21:10good one.
01:21:10I like
01:21:11that one.
01:21:14Especially
01:21:14after watching
01:21:15that movie.
01:21:17Ever since
01:21:17I was a
01:21:18child,
01:21:18people said
01:21:18my family
01:21:19was cursed.
01:21:20Bad things
01:21:21kept happening.
01:21:26it was a big
01:21:26surprise when
01:21:28the movie
01:21:28came out.
01:21:32You say
01:21:32it's based
01:21:33on a true
01:21:33story about
01:21:34the Von
01:21:34Eriks,
01:21:34then people
01:21:35are going to
01:21:35think that's
01:21:36the story,
01:21:37and that's
01:21:37where I had
01:21:37a problem
01:21:38with it.
01:21:39Because
01:21:39my dad's
01:21:40character and
01:21:41granddad,
01:21:42my goodness,
01:21:42were just
01:21:43not the
01:21:44people I
01:21:44knew.
01:21:45you got
01:21:46to take
01:21:46it and
01:21:47get up.
01:21:48It was
01:21:48a really
01:21:49well done
01:21:50movie.
01:21:50I think
01:21:50it was
01:21:50a beautiful
01:21:51movie.
01:21:52Well,
01:21:52that doesn't
01:21:53mean that
01:21:53it was
01:21:54accurate.
01:21:55And
01:21:56my dad
01:21:57had a
01:21:57good point.
01:21:58He just
01:21:58said,
01:22:00maybe
01:22:00someone will
01:22:01see this
01:22:02movie and
01:22:02become
01:22:03curious and
01:22:04look us
01:22:05up.
01:22:05And
01:22:06they'll
01:22:06see that
01:22:07really what
01:22:08got me
01:22:08through is
01:22:09my
01:22:09faith.
01:22:12thanks for
01:22:12your prayers
01:22:13because I
01:22:13think they
01:22:14did hold
01:22:14me up.
01:22:15I know
01:22:16a lot of
01:22:16my fans
01:22:16prayed and
01:22:17I thank
01:22:17all of you
01:22:18for it
01:22:18because
01:22:19here I am.
01:22:21I know
01:22:21I wouldn't
01:22:21have been
01:22:22there without
01:22:22his hand.
01:22:23So,
01:22:24thank you.
01:22:26Okay,
01:22:26the last
01:22:26question.
01:22:27What has
01:22:28this interview
01:22:28been like
01:22:29for you?
01:22:31Oh,
01:22:31okay.
01:22:34Well,
01:22:37it's like
01:22:38I want to
01:22:38be,
01:22:38um,
01:22:40open when
01:22:41I talk,
01:22:43but,
01:22:43uh,
01:22:45it's been
01:22:45a long
01:22:45time and
01:22:46I think
01:22:46down inside
01:22:47some parts
01:22:49of my
01:22:49story I
01:22:50built little
01:22:50walls around,
01:22:51you know.
01:22:52I'm kind
01:22:53of feel
01:22:53safe like
01:22:54this and
01:22:54that.
01:22:55I don't
01:22:55know.
01:22:56Probably
01:22:57a survival
01:22:57instinct,
01:22:58I don't
01:22:58know.
01:22:59I'm not
01:23:00so tough
01:23:00that I'll
01:23:01figure that.
01:23:01If it
01:23:02was a weak
01:23:02way,
01:23:03I'd have
01:23:03probably
01:23:03taken it.
01:23:04I just
01:23:04didn't
01:23:05find it.
01:23:07So,
01:23:08but here
01:23:08I am,
01:23:08and I
01:23:09did
01:23:09struggle
01:23:09and I
01:23:10suffered,
01:23:11but I'm
01:23:11not the
01:23:11only one.
01:23:12We've all
01:23:12been like
01:23:13that.
01:23:15But I'll
01:23:15say this,
01:23:16though,
01:23:16life is
01:23:16good,
01:23:17and I
01:23:17don't want
01:23:17anyone to
01:23:18feel sorry
01:23:18for me
01:23:19because I'm
01:23:19as happy
01:23:19as I
01:23:20could be.
01:23:22It's just
01:23:22a great
01:23:23life,
01:23:24you know.
01:23:26there's
01:23:26something
01:23:26magic with
01:23:27Kevin and I
01:23:27in that
01:23:27ring
01:23:28together.
01:23:28It was
01:23:28a family
01:23:29of
01:23:29superheroes.
01:23:31The roof
01:23:32is being
01:23:32blown off
01:23:33as part of
01:23:34Troy and
01:23:34by this
01:23:35crowd.
01:23:36I grew up
01:23:37idolizing those
01:23:37guys.
01:23:38I got to
01:23:38become friends
01:23:39with those
01:23:39guys.
01:23:40These are
01:23:40some of the
01:23:40best guys
01:23:41I've ever
01:23:41been around
01:23:42with in my
01:23:42life.
01:23:43Everybody
01:23:43was behind
01:23:44us.
01:23:44It's not
01:23:45just our
01:23:45win,
01:23:45it's all
01:23:46of our
01:23:46win.
01:23:48They just
01:23:49always like
01:23:49to have
01:23:50fun.
01:23:50This stuff
01:23:51right here,
01:23:51I think I
01:23:52got it down.
01:23:52The boys
01:23:53had a
01:23:53really
01:23:53close
01:23:54bond
01:23:54together
01:23:55and it
01:23:56was
01:23:57infectious.
01:24:00Carrie,
01:24:01are you
01:24:01good
01:24:02to your
01:24:02kids?
01:24:05Starting
01:24:06all over.
01:24:06The one
01:24:06thing I'd
01:24:07like to
01:24:07do is
01:24:08raise
01:24:08those
01:24:08kids
01:24:09again.
01:24:10Most
01:24:10fun
01:24:10ever
01:24:10had
01:24:11in
01:24:11my
01:24:11life.
01:24:13My
01:24:13granddad
01:24:14was so
01:24:15joyful in
01:24:16those
01:24:17moments and
01:24:18to see my
01:24:18dad get
01:24:19to have
01:24:19that now
01:24:20is so
01:24:21fulfilling.
01:24:23Now we
01:24:23have this
01:24:24ranch here
01:24:25and Holly
01:24:26brings her
01:24:26kids and
01:24:27Lacey
01:24:27brings her
01:24:28kids and
01:24:28Jill brings
01:24:29her kids
01:24:29and everybody
01:24:30can play
01:24:31and they
01:24:31can have
01:24:32a similar
01:24:33childhood
01:24:33experience to
01:24:34what we
01:24:35had with
01:24:35each other.
01:24:38I just
01:24:39love my
01:24:39family and
01:24:40I think
01:24:40that we're
01:24:40all still
01:24:41a very
01:24:41strong unit.
01:24:43I think
01:24:44whenever
01:24:44tragedy hits
01:24:45the family
01:24:46and the
01:24:46people that
01:24:46are still
01:24:47in the
01:24:47family
01:24:48even get
01:24:48closer.
01:24:50She's
01:24:50surrounded by
01:24:51love.
01:24:53Instead of
01:24:54it making
01:24:55him bitter
01:24:55for what
01:24:56he went
01:24:57through,
01:24:57it made
01:24:58him gentle
01:24:59and
01:24:59compassionate
01:25:01and he
01:25:02values
