00:34But whatever the political alignments, the Gallic people shared their legends in common,
00:40and none more persistent and accepted than the belief in the second sight.
00:46Usually called a gift, but one wonders if perhaps it is far more the reverse of that.
01:02Our mystery drama, The Unearthly Gift, was written especially for the Mystery Theater by Ian Martin and stars Betsy Palmer.
01:20Let's begin with two definitions of second sight.
01:25The unearthly capacity to see things impossible for ordinary people to see,
01:32or the ability to foretell events in the future from the shadows they cast before them.
01:39A talent bequeathed to a large, raw-boned, and rather plain girl called Ruth Ann Mitchell.
01:46She and her grandmother, Bridget Kearney, are the only women at a lumber camp high in the Bitterfoot Range
01:53which sprawls across Idaho, Washington, and half of British Columbia.
01:58Ruth and Granny cook and keep house for the lumberjacks.
