00:00Come in. Welcome. I'm E.G. Marshall. Welcome to the terrifying world of your imagination.
00:30My story explores the dark, uncharted area of the human brain. Despite medical research, scientists admit that there is much that is still unknown about the flesh and blood computer which guides our conscious and unconscious lives.
00:47Let us listen as Colonel Edmund Plant of the CMI warns Dr. Gentry what dangers exist when we attempt to control this complicated human mechanism.
00:58Let me explain, Doctor. Your patient, Kent Hatcher here, may be a time bomb. We have no idea what was done to him. But we do know, from other cases, what to expect.
01:11You mean, uh, brainwash? Perhaps. It's very likely Kent may have been subjected to deep and continual hypnosis. His mind washed as clean as a sheet of white paper, then programmed to commit some terrible act against his own people.
01:29Our mystery drama, Prognosis Negative, was written especially for the Mystery Theater by Sidney Sloan and stars William Redfield and Bryna Rayburn.
01:48Colonel Edmund Plant was on an unpleasant errand. As he walked into the big, dirty, gray building, the military hospital for the insane known to the brass as the pit.
02:11He could think of many places he'd rather be. But this was a duty he had to perform. Part of his job. And he wanted to get it over with as fast as possible.
02:23I hope this won't take too long, Dr. Gentry.
02:25No, no, not too long, Colonel Plant. All we need is your official identification. We've been able to identify him from his fingerprints, but the official rules call for your observation and signature.
02:35I know, I know, I know. Right this way, we've got him in a private room because of his condition.
02:41Here, here we are. Step inside, please. I'll, uh, I'll speak to him. I don't know if he'll respond.
02:50Kent, can you hear me?
02:57Colonel Plant, your commanding officer, is here to see you. You want to talk to him?
03:03Six, five, three, listen to me, listen to me. What does that mean?
03:12Well, we don't know. That's the only response we've been able to get from him.
03:16Uh, Kent. Do you remember me? Kent.
03:21See? Look at his eyes. No focus. He doesn't hear you. He's in a world of his own.
03:27Kent Hatcher disappeared on a mission behind enemy lines eight years ago.
03:31Ah. Two months ago, he showed up in a prisoner exchange. We had believed him dead in action.
03:38After seven years, he was declared officially dead.
03:41Well, does he have any relatives? A wife. Yeah.
03:44He had a wife. She's remarried. Moved away. Left the state, I believe.
03:49Anyone else, Colonel?
03:50No.
03:50Well, so, here he is. Mindless, mutilated, tortured. No relatives, no friends. And his superiors embarrassed or annoyed that he's still alive.
04:02Now, I did not make the rules, nor did I persuade Kent Hatcher to take the mission. It was purely voluntary.
04:08I know, I know. Well, what do we do now? Of course, we will do our best to bring him back.
04:13It's mentally and physically. Both, if possible, but it is doubtful. He has an overstrained heart condition. It's quite serious.
04:20So, permanent physical recovery is doubtful. Perhaps it's all for the good.
04:24But you would rather that he die? Let me explain.
04:30Kent Hatcher may be a time bomb. We have no idea what was done to him. But we do know from other cases what to expect.
04:37You mean, uh, brainwash? Perhaps. It's very likely Kent may have been subjected to deep and continual hypnosis.
04:45His mind washed as clean as a sheet of white paper, and then programmed to commit some terrible act against his own people.
04:52Six, five, three. Listen to me. Listen to me.
04:59Doctor, I want this man kept under surveillance day and night. We cannot take any chances.
05:07CMI, Colonel Plant here.
05:14Oh, Colonel, this is Dr. Gentry. Paul Gentry.
05:17Uh, yes?
05:18Remember, we were talking just last week about the case of Kent Hatcher, one of your agents.
05:23Oh, yes, that. Well, yes, yes.
05:25I'm afraid I'm going to puncture that theory of yours about Hatcher being something of a time bomb ready to blow up.
05:31I'm, I'm certain that he's not dangerous.
05:34On what do you base your findings?
05:35Well, he's been under intense treatment and has begun to respond very rapidly. He's, he's mild and cooperative. He's almost childlike.
05:43I see.
05:44I've reduced the guard to one eight-hour shift, midnight to eight in the morning, and at all other times, he is constantly in the hands of our nurses and therapists and other personnel.
05:54Well, you are something of a gambler, Doctor.
05:56Uh, uh, a gambler?
05:58Taking that kind of a risk.
05:59No, no, no, no, no. I, I don't think so.
06:02Doctor, has it occurred to you that this entire mild convalescence may have been programmed into the mind of this man to throw you off guard?
06:10Oh, nonsense. I know a harmless man when I see one.
06:14To leave him unguarded is taking chances with the lives of many people.
06:19Heaven only knows what has been fed into his receptive and willing mind.
06:22You know your name is Kent, don't you?
06:32Yes, Doctor.
06:33Do you know your full name? Can you remember?
06:36Yes.
06:37Kent Hatcher.
06:38Very good, very good.
06:40Now, how do you know that is your name?
06:42You told me.
06:44You had a life before you were brought here.
06:47You were married.
06:48Can you remember that?
06:49No, Doctor.
06:51You had a daughter, Mary.
06:53She was very ill.
06:55I don't remember.
06:57You loved her very much.
06:59When she died, you were heartbroken.
07:03Heartbroken?
07:04You don't recall anything?
07:08No.
07:11Oh, Doctor, I just wanted to remind you, you have a lecture today at the university.
07:16Oh, yes, yes, yes. That's right. Thank you, Evelyn.
07:17Look, I'm working with Hatcher. Do you know the case?
07:20I should know. I've been transcribing all your notes.
07:23Well, I'm in the midst of giving him a series of perception tests.
07:26All very simple. Just a matter of timing them.
07:28Yes, I know them, Doctor.
07:30You think you could finish them while I'm at the university?
07:32Well, yes, I guess I could, but...
07:36What?
07:38I'm just a bit afraid of him.
07:40I was in the office the last time you spoke with Colonel Platt.
07:43Now, now, look. If you don't want the assignment, I'll just give you...
07:45Oh, I want it. As long as you say he's...
07:49Well, okay.
07:51Good, good. I'll expect you in ten minutes.
07:59Excellent, Mr. Hatcher. Excellent.
08:01Well, I'll have a good report for Dr. Gentry.
08:03Now, suppose we put all the equipment, the puzzles and the cards, back into their proper boxes.
08:12Proper boxes?
08:13The boxes they came in.
08:15You understand, don't you?
08:17I understand.
08:19I think you understand more than you pretend.
08:23Are you pretending?
08:24No. No.
08:27No.
08:27Oh, don't get upset. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.
08:30Six, five, three. Listen to me. Listen to me.
08:35Please, sit down. We have more to do, more games to play.
08:39Please.
08:40Now. Now. Now.
08:41Now. Stay back. Stay back.
08:42Now.
08:43Please, don't hurt me.
08:44Now.
08:44Now.
08:44Now.
08:45Now.
08:52Six, five, three. Listen to me.
08:58Listen to me.
09:07I am grateful to the officials who have given me this airtime to explain a very serious matter.
09:13I am or was Ken Hatcher's doctor, and I must add my warning to the hundreds of others you have read in your newspapers and heard over the air.
09:20Ken Hatcher is dangerous. Frighteningly dangerous. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to apprehend him yourself.
09:28Call the special numbers that have been set up for this purpose.
09:31Do not let his mild manner deceive you.
09:34He is a killer who will act without even the slightest provocation.
09:38The police have orders to shoot on sight.
09:40Morning, mister. What can I do for you? You want to buy a $200 coat for you, 18?
09:52I want some clothes. Different clothes.
09:57Oh, well, I don't blame you. You're wearing old painter's overalls, and where did you pick up that ring coat? At the automat?
10:05Give me clothes. Sure. Sure, mister. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings or nothing.
10:11Look, I figure you about a $40 long, right on this rack over here.
10:16So, Roy, you just go ahead and help yourself, huh? You pick out what you want.
10:20I got to go to the back of the store to do a little alteration, okay?
10:25You just pick out what you want, and then call me, right?
10:29Okay. I'll see you in a minute.
10:30What was that number I seen in the paper?
10:35Where is it? Where is it? Here. Here.
10:42Oh, well.
10:47Hello? Hello, listen. He's right in my store.
10:50I recognize him in the picture in the paper.
10:53Also, I've seen it four times on the news.
10:54I don't know how long I could get...
10:56Six, five, three.
11:09Listen to me.
11:11Listen to me.
11:20Now, the way I see it, Archie,
11:22the old girl's prime for the taking right now,
11:24with the right approach.
11:25It's the booze talking, Freddie girl.
11:28You ain't got a scent out of here, Mrs. Mulberry.
11:30And you ain't gonna because you ain't sharp enough to convince her.
11:34Look, Archie, you gotta work these big jobs slow.
11:38You rush them, you end up with an empty hand.
11:40Look, Freddie, that old tea leaves bit
11:43and the table-knocking routine ain't gonna fool no one.
11:47Not even your stupid Mrs. Mulberry,
11:48who wants to get in touch with the spirit of her dear dead departed.
11:52Hey, take the bottle and get in the other room.
11:55Might be a customer for a reading.
11:56This hour, 11.45?
11:58Yeah, it's probably some drug.
11:59Oh, the better.
12:00They give bigger fees.
12:01And no complaints.
12:02Now, get out.
12:03All right, all right.
12:04I'll be sitting behind the curtain in the kitchen.
12:10Yes?
12:10Oh, step inside, friend.
12:13And let Frederica Gillis solve your problems.
12:16You have...
12:17Have...
12:18Yes, yes.
12:19Oh, look.
12:21Step inside, please.
12:24That's better.
12:25Now, what's troubling you, friend?
12:28Money matters, domestic difficulties, fear of the future?
12:32There is a sign in your window.
12:36Spiritual reader, forecaster of the future, palms red.
12:39No, no, not that.
12:41Not what?
12:42The sign.
12:43The sign, room to rent.
12:45Oh, that.
12:47Well, that's a mistake, mister.
12:48We had our room vacant, but we really don't have a...
12:50I took that room three months ago.
12:52I'm allowed to hear there ain't no more room.
12:54But the sign is still in the window.
12:57Just a mistake.
12:58It should have been taken down.
13:00No room?
13:01No room, chum.
13:03All right.
13:04This way out.
13:05Wait.
13:07Maybe we have got a room for this gentleman.
13:11What?
13:13Freddy, have you got...
13:14Top floor.
13:15Sort of an attic room, if you don't mind the climb.
13:17That's...
13:18Wait a minute.
13:19You can't get in that room.
13:20I've got all the photographic equipment in there.
13:22Well, you'd better clear it out, because I've just rented the room to this here nice gentleman.
13:27You want to take a look at it, sir?
13:29I'll take it.
13:30Without even looking at it?
13:32I think you'd better go up and then decide.
13:34I want to be fair about it.
13:36Right up them stairs.
13:37Top floor.
13:38First door on the left.
13:38Well, I don't need to look.
13:40Now, do as you're told.
13:42Go upstairs.
13:44Yes.
13:44Yes, I'll go.
13:46I'll do as you say.
13:50What is the crazy idea, that?
13:53Now, what do you want him around here for?
13:54For a very definite reason.
13:57I recognized him immediately.
13:59You did?
14:00Well, who is he?
14:01He's Kent Hatcher.
14:03The man in the entire country is searching for...
14:05That one?
14:07And you'll let him in...
14:08Put down that phone, you fool.
14:09Put it down.
14:11Now, this guy Hatcher is going to be the one thing we need to pull off that caper with Mrs. Mowbray.
14:18This is the biggest piece of luck we've had.
14:21Rhetorica Gillis, in her own canny way, recognized more than just the features of the hunted man.
14:34She knew intuitively that he was susceptible to hypnosis
14:37and made up her mind to use this susceptibility to further her own nefarious plans.
14:44I'll be back shortly with Act Two.
14:46Act Two.
14:47Act Two.
14:51Several days have passed since Kent Hatcher, the hunted man,
15:04found refuge with Frederica Gillis and her accomplice, Archie.
15:09She has not permitted him to leave the house
15:11and, in fact, has been working to disguise his much-publicized scarred face.
15:19Is that you, Archie?
15:20Right, pretty girl.
15:23Come out here in the kitchen.
15:24I want you to see something.
15:25Coming.
15:30Well, Archie, how do you like him?
15:33Good.
15:34What a change you made in his appearance.
15:37You've even given him a new hairdo.
15:39Looks a lot different with a dye job.
15:42Takes years off his age, blacking it up like that.
15:45Oh, wait till his beard grows out.
15:47That'll cover most of the scars.
15:49It's terrific.
15:51Well, Kent, how do you like your new look?
15:54I like it.
15:58Only his name is not Kent, Archie.
16:00That had to be changed.
16:02His name is Mazumodar.
16:05What?
16:06He's going to be Mazumodar, the Indian mystic.
16:10Well, darken his face, let his beard grow out,
16:12and then with a fancy, what do you call them things they wrap around their heads?
16:16Turban.
16:16Turban, turban, that's it.
16:18Oh, can't you just see him in a rich-looking robe with a turban on his head?
16:22Now, wait, well, what's on your mind, Freddy girl?
16:25Oh, you're not very quick, Archie.
16:27Now, look, what I have in mind is...
16:29Mazumodar.
16:32Mazumodar.
16:33Mazumodar.
16:35Do you hear me?
16:37I hear you.
16:38What is your name?
16:41Tell me your name.
16:43I am Mazumodar.
16:46Now, I want you to go to your room,
16:50and you are to stay there until I call you.
16:55Repeat what I have told you.
16:57Go to my room and stay until you call me.
17:01Now, go.
17:03I go to my room and stay.
17:07That's amazing.
17:09To me?
17:09He's behaving like a little lamb.
17:11Oh, I could sense right from the moment I laid eyes on him
17:13that he was an easy subject.
17:15Oh, we're going to give Mrs. Mowbray
17:17the greatest spirit show she's ever seen in her life.
17:21She'll hand us her money in a bushel basket.
17:33Everything ready, Archie?
17:34Yeah, I think so.
17:36Now, let's run over the list.
17:37Wind effect, whistling sound, eerie music.
17:41Okay, but not too much.
17:43When she does get in touch with her dear departed Kenneth,
17:47what's she going to ask him?
17:49And what's our phony medium Kent going to reply?
17:52Mazumodar.
17:53Remember that.
17:54Okay, Mazumodar.
17:55What's he going to say?
17:57Now, you can't guess what the old gal might ask
17:59when the seance starts.
18:00Look, I've been working with him all week.
18:03If the going gets too rough for him
18:04and he can't give a good answer,
18:06I'll just break things up.
18:07Stop the seance.
18:08Say that the contact with the spirit world is broken.
18:11Okay.
18:12What time is she coming?
18:13I told her eight o'clock.
18:15Well, now, just to get things straight,
18:18now, I'll be in the kitchen.
18:20All the sound effects will be piped into here
18:22where the seance has taken place, right?
18:24Right.
18:25And when I want the sound out,
18:27I'll say,
18:29Mazumodar,
18:30do you feel a presence in this room?
18:33Then I fade sound out
18:35and Mazumodar takes over.
18:38That's all there is to it.
18:40And Mrs. Mowbray will be here in 30 minutes.
18:50Mrs. Mowbray,
18:52this is the great Mazumodar.
18:54Oh, does he speak English?
18:57Oh, yes.
18:58I've asked him to conduct the seance in English.
19:02He's agreed.
19:03Though he'd rather do it in his own language.
19:06Oh, I understand.
19:08Thank him for me.
19:09If he is able to reach out into the great void
19:12and bring my son,
19:14my dear son Kenneth,
19:16back to me.
19:17Even for an instance.
19:18Mazumodar will do his best.
19:21I told him of your great sorrow
19:23when he was sympathetic.
19:26Weren't you all seeing one?
19:28I am sympathetic
19:29to the sorrows of a grieving mother.
19:33Oh, oh, bless you.
19:35Bless you.
19:36Please help me.
19:37Let us begin.
19:39Sit here at this table, Mrs. Mowbray.
19:41Yes.
19:42You there.
19:43I will sit opposite you.
19:45The great Mazumodar will sit between us.
19:50Let the seance begin.
19:55What is this?
19:58Silence.
20:00Mazumodar must reach out into the spirit world.
20:04He is entering his trance.
20:06I call to you.
20:09I order you to come.
20:13Spirits, obey the command of Mazumozza.
20:23Do you feel a presence, all seeing one?
20:28There is one here who demands to speak.
20:34Then let him speak.
20:36Mother? Mother, where are you?
20:42It's Kenneth. He's calling to me.
20:45You may speak to him.
20:49Kenneth, darling, I miss you terribly.
20:54Are you happy?
20:55I am happy, Mother.
20:59Oh, I'm so alone, darling.
21:02I want you with me always.
21:04I have felt your presence.
21:07I have been with you from the moment of my death.
21:13It has been difficult reaching you.
21:17Difficult to let you hear my voice.
21:21Now you are being helped by kind and gentle people.
21:27People, be good to them, Mother.
21:30Without them, our thin thread of contact will dissolve.
21:36I will return to you, and we will talk again.
21:41I will return.
21:44Oh, what happened?
21:46Why has he gone?
21:48Call him back. Call him back.
21:49I beg you.
21:50Mother, I will give you anything you want,
21:53but please let me speak to him again.
21:55Now stop that.
21:56You want to ruin everything?
21:58Stop my thing.
21:59The seance is at an end.
22:01Oh, please.
22:03Please.
22:04Ask Mother Mardar to forgive me for my outburst.
22:07Mother Mardar understands Mrs. Mowbray.
22:10Oh, I hope he does.
22:11When may I come again?
22:13I will call you after I consult with him.
22:16Um, I, I want to, well, I don't quite know how to say this,
22:22but can I give him something?
22:24I mean, will he accept?
22:26The all-seeing one is a holy man and may not accept money.
22:31It is unclean.
22:32Oh, oh, well, in that case.
22:34But he must live, and I must live.
22:36That is, I will accept for him.
22:41Oh, yes, yes, of course.
22:45Here.
22:46Oh, you are a good person, Mrs. Gillis.
22:49I am, I am so lucky to have found you.
22:52Goodbye.
22:53Thank you again, and please call me soon, soon.
22:58Goodbye.
23:03Archie?
23:05She's gone, finally, huh?
23:08You didn't let the seance go too long, did you?
23:10Just long enough to make her want more.
23:13Oh, oh, oh.
23:13It was a complete success.
23:15Mazumodar was perfect.
23:17She loosened up the purse strings a wee bit, too, didn't she?
23:20I heard her say something about money.
23:22Yeah.
23:23Five hundred.
23:24Take your cut.
23:25Five hundred?
23:27Better than I thought.
23:29Peanuts.
23:30That's just a down payment on what she's going to give us,
23:33beg us to take.
23:35You got something big on your mind?
23:37Well, the next time, she's not going to be taken in quite so much by the atmosphere of the seance.
23:44She'll want something more definite, more tangible.
23:47Well, we got all that info we collected from the Army files about her son.
23:51You know, flyers shot down.
23:52But he never recovered.
23:55Final report of his burial in enemy territory.
23:57Oh, nothing in that stuff will have any influence on her.
24:00Now, just take a look at this snapshot taken with his buddies overseas.
24:04Take a good look at it.
24:06Yeah?
24:07All right.
24:07Yeah.
24:08Well, what's so important about this photo?
24:10Look at his right wrist.
24:12What do you see?
24:13Here.
24:14Here.
24:14Use this magnifying glass.
24:15Here.
24:16Yeah.
24:17Looks like he's wearing one of them identity bracelets this guy wore at the time.
24:21You know, especially the flyers.
24:22That's correct.
24:25Now, it was specially made for him, she told me, by a fancy jeweler.
24:29Now, at the time of his death, it was destroyed or stolen.
24:32She never got it back.
24:33So what?
24:34Well, we are going to reproduce that bracelet.
24:38And at the next seance, Mazumodar will ask the dear departed Kenner for some proof that he is really Mrs. Mowbray's son.
24:49And then old Mazumi will drop the identity bracelet right into Mrs. Mowbray's sweating hands.
24:55Oh, that's great.
24:56That's really a great idea, Frederica, girl.
24:59Now, look.
25:00You take this photo and blow it up as large as you can.
25:02And then blow up the portion that takes in the right wrist.
25:05Yeah, then blow that up again.
25:07Yeah.
25:08Then get all the details.
25:09And then we find a jeweler who can reproduce the identification bracelet exactly.
25:17What do you think that'll be worth to the rich Mrs. Mowbray?
25:30All right, open up, Kent.
25:32Now, will you be a good guy?
25:34Good guy, now open up the door, huh?
25:37Look, I got to get in there, Kent.
25:39Now, I got all my photographic equipment in there.
25:43Ah, well, thanks, old man.
25:46Hey, I'm, uh, I'm sorry if I disturbed you.
25:49It will take me a minute.
25:50No.
25:50No.
25:50No.
25:51Wait a minute, Kent, or Mazumoda, or whatever your name.
25:54Now, listen.
25:55No.
25:55Stop.
25:56Stop now.
25:56Don't look at me like that.
25:57Frederica.
25:58No.
25:58Frederica, help.
25:59Six.
26:00No.
26:00Five.
26:01No.
26:01Three.
26:02Stop.
26:02Listen to me.
26:03Stop.
26:04Listen to me.
26:06No.
26:10No.
26:11No.
26:12No.
26:12No.
26:13No.
26:13You hear me?
26:13No.
26:13You hear me and you obey.
26:16Tell me that you hear me.
26:17I hear you.
26:19Well, now go back into your room
26:26And stay there until I order you to leave
26:30Repeat what I have said
26:32Go back to my room
26:37Stay there
26:39Until I order you to leave
26:43Until you order me to leave
26:49Feeling better, Archie?
26:55Well, my throat feels like a horse stepped out of something
26:59We're playing with dynamite
27:01The best thing we can do is turn him in
27:03Before we all wake up dead somewhere
27:05Yeah, wait till we make the big caper
27:08Till the next seance
27:09And we're able to drop the identification bracelet
27:13Into the center of the table
27:15Can we take the chance?
27:17Can we wait that long?
27:18Just go to work, take your pictures
27:20How long will it take to have the bracelet made?
27:22Well, I know a guy who does great work
27:24Good
27:24Can you get to him?
27:26This is just a telephone call
27:27He owes me a couple of favors
27:28Well, call him
27:29And then start working with your camera
27:31I got all your equipment out of Mazumodar's room
27:34Here
27:40Feast your eyes on that
27:44Oh, the bracelet
27:46You got it
27:47Told you the jeweler was a friend, eh?
27:49Did it in two days
27:50Now ain't it beautiful?
27:51Oh, let me see the photo
27:53There was a blow-up you made
27:54Yeah
27:55Spirton image
27:56Oh, perfect
27:58Looks like the original
27:59Yeah
28:00Look how he made it look as though it had been in a fire, eh?
28:03Mulberry went down in flames, you know
28:05Yeah
28:05Oh, good touch
28:07Makes you look authentic
28:08But I'll call Mrs. Mulberry
28:10And set up the seance as soon as possible
28:11Hey
28:12Listen, there's one little fly in the ointment, Freddie girl
28:15What?
28:16Maybe we ought to get a new medium to run the show, eh?
28:19What are you talking about?
28:21New medium
28:21No, no
28:23We've got to use Mazumodar
28:25We've established him
28:26Well, you've got to unestablish him
28:28He's gone
28:29Gone?
28:31When?
28:31How?
28:33We'll just have to find him
28:34Come on
28:35He didn't have much money
28:37So he couldn't have gone far
28:38Well, wouldn't it be better to report the whole thing to the police?
28:41And throw away enough money to keep us in the good things for the rest of our life
28:45Are you crazy?
28:46But now
28:46No, no buts
28:48Mazumodar is the key that will unlock Mrs. Mulberry's bank account
28:53And we're not going to let that slip out of our hands
28:56Can't hatch her loose in the city again
29:04No one to control his homicidal urges
29:08His changed appearance would make it difficult for the police to recognize and to apprehend him
29:14Will they?
29:17I'll be back shortly with Act Three
29:19Two days have gone by since Kent Hatcher broke through the bombs of hypnotic suggestion
29:37And fled from the house of Frederica Gillis
29:40Mrs. Gillis and Archie have been hunting for him for hours
29:44But the tortured man wanders through the big city
29:49Something urges him onward
29:52Something that he cannot define even to himself
29:57Hello
29:57May I speak to Carl Shearson, please?
30:00This is his wife
30:01Carl
30:02Alma
30:03I know you don't like me calling the office, but
30:06I think I saw him
30:08No
30:10Carl, I'm sure
30:12He's changed, but I knew him
30:14Yes, I know I said that before, but this time
30:18He followed me
30:20Yes, I tried to get away
30:22I ran into Fletcher's grocery store
30:24Quickly ordered some groceries and asked them to let me slip out the back entrance
30:27I didn't see him after that
30:30Call the police
30:32No, I couldn't
30:34They
30:36They'll kill him
30:37They're searching for him and they'll take no chance
30:40Someone at the door
30:42Must be my grocery order
30:44I told them to send it up
30:45Call me back in a few minutes, Carl
30:47Coming
30:51Oh, no
30:56No
30:57Please
30:58Please
30:59Don't come in here
31:00Get your foot out of the door
31:02Let me close it, please
31:04Alma
31:05I want to talk to you
31:09Alma
31:10Don't hold the door
31:12I
31:13I won't hurt you
31:14No
31:14Come
31:15Come in
31:16Alma
31:21I've been following you
31:23At first I didn't know why
31:26And
31:28And then
31:28The name
31:29Alma
31:31Alma
31:32Alma
31:32Kept repeating in my head
31:34Then I knew
31:36Who Alma was
31:38Do you know who I am?
31:41Yes
31:41I know you, Kent
31:43They told me you were dead
31:46I was alone all those years
31:50I
31:52I'm remarried
31:54Remarried?
31:57You were
31:58Declared legally dead
32:00Even then I hesitated
32:02But
32:03Carl insisted that we marry
32:05He's a good man
32:07Kind
32:08I need him
32:10He loves me
32:12Our
32:14Daughter Mary
32:17Dead, isn't she?
32:22Pneumonia
32:22The year after you disappeared
32:25Dead
32:26Everything
32:29Dead
32:31Or gone
32:33Or over
32:36Kent
32:38You must go away
32:39Hide
32:41They're looking for you
32:43They may find you here
32:45Or over
32:46You know
32:48Alma
32:49I can hardly
32:51Remember
32:52What you used
32:53To look like
32:54I can hardly
32:56Remember
32:58My life
32:59There's nothing
33:08Here in the papers
33:09Nothing on the radio
33:11Or TV
33:12All it says is
33:13Fugitive killer
33:14Still at large
33:15Seems he ran into his ex-missus
33:18And her new husband
33:19Reported it to the police
33:20No, that means he's still in town
33:22Yeah, worst luck
33:23I wish he'd take off
33:24With the great open spaces
33:25I hope we never see him again
33:27What are you talking about, Archie?
33:29We need him
33:30I'm hoping he'll come back here
33:32Here?
33:33Yeah, where else can he go?
33:34He hasn't a scent
33:35He knows he's safe here
33:36Question is, Freddy
33:38Are we?
33:39I can control him
33:41And we need him
33:42I've stalled Mrs. Mowbray twice
33:45I can't keep doing it
33:46Without her losing interest
33:47If he walked in that door today
33:50We could schedule the seance
33:51For tonight
33:52And then
33:52Clear out of here, Archie
33:54That's a client
33:54Wants a reading
33:55I'll go in the kitchen
33:56All right, right, right
33:57Call me if you want
33:57Yeah
33:58You
34:02Mazumoto
34:04Come in
34:05Come in
34:06Archie
34:07Come here
34:08Quiet
34:09Why, it's him
34:11He was right
34:13He did come back
34:14Mazumoto
34:16Listen to me
34:18Listen
34:20You are to go to your room
34:23Go
34:25To my room
34:27You will change your street clothes
34:30To Mazumoto's robe
34:33And turban
34:34Do you understand?
34:36I understand
34:39I understand
34:39Now
34:40Go to your room
34:43Go
34:44I go
34:45To my room
34:47That's amazing
34:48That's truly amazing
34:50You got him like a monkey on a string
34:53I told you I could control him
34:55You gonna pull it off tonight?
34:57Why should we wait?
34:58Soon as we get our money
35:00We'll get rid of him
35:00Turn him in
35:01It's my sentiments exactly
35:03Now he is too hot to handle
35:05The sooner the cops get him
35:06The better
35:07Hand me the phone
35:08Mrs. Mowbray
35:20Right on time
35:21Come in
35:22Come in
35:23Thank you for calling me
35:25I began to think that all contact with my son Kenneth was broken
35:29I thought perhaps I had disturbed Mazumoda by my outburst
35:33Oh no
35:34No
35:34Nothing like that
35:36But
35:36I must tell you
35:38His efforts on your behalf have taken their toll of his strength
35:42I don't quite understand
35:44Well
35:45Every night
35:46Mazumoda has reached out into the darkness of death
35:50To touch the spirit of your son
35:52Oh
35:52Has he
35:53Has he really
35:54The effort has drained his strength
35:56He
35:56He is not well
35:58Oh
35:59Then perhaps
36:00It may take him months
36:02Perhaps years to recuperate
36:03And the expenses incurred are very high
36:06I will pay them anything
36:08Well I am certain that he will be successful tonight
36:13I have been in communion with the spirit of your son
36:23I have informed him that he must appear to you
36:28Oh
36:29And must give you some evidence known only to the two of you
36:33To prove without any doubt that it is truly he
36:39Oh if he could
36:41If he could
36:42We will begin
36:43Sit here at this table
36:46As we did the last time
36:48Yes
36:48You there
36:49I across from you
36:51And Mazumoda
36:53Sitting between us
36:54Now I will dim the lights
36:56Let us join hands and complete the mystic circle
37:03Oh Mazumoda
37:10Do you feel a present?
37:13I feel there is one here who has traveled a long way
37:22Do you know him by name?
37:25This is not simple
37:28He is trying
37:32He is trying
37:34Trying
37:36To
37:36Mazumoda
37:38Are you alright?
37:40Can you continue?
37:41I can't continue
37:44I must
37:46The spirit is here in our midst
37:49He wants to speak
37:51Let him speak
37:53Mother
37:54Mother
37:56I
37:56Call out to you
37:59Across the long reaches of infinity
38:02Oh
38:03Oh
38:04Kenneth
38:04I have spoken several times to this holy man
38:10Who has made it possible to be near you
38:14Yes
38:14Yes
38:15Kenneth
38:16He has informed me that I must give you substantial proof of my presence here
38:24What should it be?
38:26Oh anything
38:27Anything
38:29I believe it is really you
38:31No
38:32I will give you proof
38:35Proof of my love for you dear mother
38:37Oh
38:38Do you remember your loving gift to me?
38:42Oh
38:42What what gift?
38:45Shortly before I left to go overseas on my last furlough home
38:51Oh
38:53Oh
38:54The bracelet
38:55The identification bracelet
38:57Yes
38:58It was never found
39:00Never returned to me
39:02I wanted that more than anything else
39:04I knew that and
39:06I return it to you now
39:09Oh
39:09Oh
39:10Oh
39:11It is
39:13It's my bracelet
39:15Oh
39:16My son
39:17My son
39:19Light
39:19Let us turn on the light
39:21The seance
39:22Is over
39:23Oh
39:24Oh
39:25Oh
39:27My dear son
39:28Son
39:29Oh
39:30Oh
39:30Could you all
39:32All be to me
39:35To bring back this bracelet
39:37Oh
39:39This is all I have left of him
39:41Oh
39:42Thank you
39:44Mother
39:44And
39:44How can I ever
39:47Adequately
39:48Thank you
39:49I
39:50Am
39:52Sympathetic
39:54To the grief
39:56Of a lonely
39:58Mother
39:59Mother
40:01Mother
40:03Mother
40:03He's fallen
40:04Quick
40:04Help me
40:05Help me lift him
40:06Oh
40:07I can't
40:08Archie
40:09Archie
40:10Come in here quickly
40:11What is it?
40:12What's happened?
40:13Mother Mother has fainted
40:14Collapsed here
40:14Help me
40:15I'll get him under the right arm
40:17Now
40:17And then you get him
40:18Wait
40:19Wait
40:20Wait a minute
40:20It's no use
40:22Just leave him there
40:24Leave him
40:25He's
40:27Dead
40:28Come in
40:42Oh yes
40:44Yes
40:45Colonel Plant
40:46I've
40:46I've been expecting you
40:48Yes
40:48Yes
40:48Official identification
40:49Of the body
40:50I know
40:50Well
40:51I don't make the rules
40:52I realize that doctor
40:53Let's get on with it
40:55I have another appointment
40:55Very well
40:56If you'll come this way
40:57Get after you
41:00Colonel
41:01We
41:04Keep the bodies here
41:06Prior to identification
41:07Of course
41:09Right this way please
41:11And here we are
41:14Number 31416
41:17Do you identify this man
41:22Colonel Plant?
41:23I do
41:23His name was Kent Hatcher
41:25His serial number
41:26No no
41:26That won't be necessary
41:27Colonel
41:27It's all here on this form
41:29May I have your
41:29Signature please
41:31Yes
41:31Of course
41:32There you are
41:34Thank you
41:35Is that all?
41:36No
41:36That's all that's required
41:37Officially Colonel
41:38But
41:39Do you mind if I ask you
41:40A question?
41:41Yes
41:42Go ahead
41:42That business with the
41:44Identification bracelet
41:46Oh it was a fake
41:47A reproduction
41:48Mrs. Gillis
41:49Accomplice Archie
41:50Had it made from a photograph
41:51We got all that
41:52In their confessions
41:53They had made it look
41:54As though the dead son
41:55Kenneth had sent
41:56The bracelet to his mother
41:57From the great beyond
41:59Mm-hmm
42:00Yes
42:00It's a common trick
42:01Played by people
42:02Of this type
42:03To built naive women
42:04However
42:05There was one aspect
42:06Of the matter
42:07That has not been
42:08Satisfactorily explained
42:09You mean about
42:10The inscription
42:11On the inside
42:12Of the identification band
42:14To my son
42:15Forever and ever
42:17Mother
42:18Doctor
42:20There was no way
42:21They could have known
42:22What that was
42:24Or
42:24Whether there was
42:25Even an inscription
42:26In some mysterious way
42:28That engraving appeared
42:30On the inner face
42:32Of the silver bracelets
42:33How
42:35We shall never know
42:38And the tortured
42:46Troubled man
42:47Finally found his rest
42:49On a cold slab
42:51In the morgue
42:52Unmourned
42:54Unwanted
42:55Unwept for
42:57I'll be back shortly
43:00So we've had a look
43:14At the terrifying results
43:16Of tampering
43:17With the human brain
43:18All the experts
43:21Agreed pretty much
43:22On the methods
43:23That had been used
43:24But not one
43:26Had an answer
43:27For Kent Hatcher's
43:28Mysterious
43:28Extrasensory knowledge
43:30Of the inscription
43:31On the inside
43:33Of the bracelet
43:34That
43:35He took to his grave
43:37Our cast included
43:40William Redfield
43:40Bryna Rayburn
43:41Mason Adams
43:43Earl Hammond
43:44And Martha Greenhouse
43:45The entire production
43:47Was under the direction
43:48Of Hyman Brown
43:49And now
43:51A preview
43:52Of our next tale
43:54You see this writing
43:57Yes
43:58It is the runic alphabet
44:01It represents
44:02An ancient
44:03Death curse
44:05And those
44:06Figures on it
44:08The date
44:10Of your death
44:11Now that's ridiculous
44:13It has earned
44:15The reputation
44:16Of being one
44:17Of the most
44:17Powerful
44:18Of all the
44:19Ancient spells
44:20The drawback
44:22Of course
44:22Was the
44:24Absolute
44:25Necessity
44:25Of having
