00:04Asteroids whizzing around the Sun are concerning for humanity, for reasons that are all too obvious.
00:08The asteroid that killed the dinosaurs is simply one of many.
00:11And despite the vast emptiness of space, it's only a matter of time before we have another massive collision.
00:17Which is why astronomers are extremely vigilant in spotting and calculating the trajectory of NEOs, or near-Earth objects.
00:23And NASA just mapped thousands of them.
00:25This is a map of the solar system, showing the trajectories of some 2,200 potentially dangerous asteroids over the
00:32next 1,000 years.
00:34They used a series of simulations to plot and track the asteroids over that time.
00:37But of course there are variables.
00:39The simple overheating of an asteroid may alter its course over time, or it might run into something else.
00:44Which is why a computer simulation, which can run their trajectories over and over, is extremely helpful.
00:48So what are we in for?
00:50Well, the NASA researchers did find a couple of concerning ones.
00:53Asteroid 7482 will blast past Earth several times and exceptionally close over the next 1,000 years.
00:59Meaning it's the asteroid with the most likelihood to collide with us.
01:02Meanwhile, Asteroid 143651 is so chaotic in its orbit, they can't even predict where it's going to be in a
01:09couple of decades.
