NASA has revealed the existence of a previously unnoticed asteroid, named 2026 JK4, which will come closer to Earth than the moon, at approximately 230,000 miles — detected by the Catalina Sky Survey just days prior to its nearest approach. This 80-foot rock possesses enough size to destroy a small city, and although there is no risk of impact, the late discovery highlights the number of potentially dangerous asteroids that remain unidentified. The DART mission demonstrated that we can redirect asteroids — but only if we have years to prepare. Here’s what NASA has uncovered.

00:00NASA scientists just confirmed a previously hidden asteroid on a near-Earth trajectory.
00:05And the data is raising eyebrows in the planetary defense community.
00:09The space rock, designated 2026 JK4, was spotted by the Catalina Sky Survey
00:16only days before its closest approach.
00:18It will pass closer to Earth than the Moon, at about 230,000 miles,
00:24making it a Class I close-approach object.
00:26The asteroid measures roughly 80 feet across,
00:30large enough to flatten a small city if it hit a populated area.
00:34NASA stresses there is no impact threat from this pass,
00:37but the late detection underscores how many potentially hazardous asteroids remain undetected.
00:43The Planetary Defense Coordination Office has been pushing for a new generation of space telescopes
00:49to spot rocks like this earlier.
00:51The DART mission already proved we can deflect an asteroid.

00:57Days of warning would not be enough.
