00:00Tarek Skubal is out we were thinking this guy was going to get a scope and arthroscopic surgery to remove
00:06loose bodies from his elbow it turns out there was only one loose body in his elbow it was allegedly
00:13the same size as a lima bean and it was taken out without really any issue and before we get
00:22into the dialogue surrounding Tarek Skubal
00:24I want to play you a clip from our friend Buster Olney on the Baseball Tonight podcast he had Scott
00:31Morris on on Monday morning and Boris explained this new medical procedure that Skubal went through so just listen to
00:38this
00:39what can you tell us about the surgery that he went through and after Dr. Eletraj got the MRI he
00:45told me I have a I have a new procedure that I think is something that we we can discuss
00:53that will really really
00:54limit the time that that Tarek would be off versus a normal arthroscope and and Dr. Eletraj described essentially that
01:05he had there's new technology where a needle sized device put the scope in and has a camera on the
01:14end of it that gives him a 120 degree look at everything where he can be precise about where the
01:21the bone chip was and and
01:24he could do this and he could do this in a way that would not interrupt the tissue as a
01:30normal arthroscope would so immediately we this is the first time we named it the school will scope and we
01:37he essentially went in and was able to see the particle extracted and in effect the consequence was that it
01:48was almost like Tarek had had an injection because the needle so small and
01:54and so it allowed for him almost to immediately return to a buildup for his you know performance and and
02:04will allow him we will see we'll still have to go through the process but it'll allow him turn to
02:11performance at just a much much earlier stage.
02:17So again that was Scott Boris joining Buster Olney on ESPN's baseball tonight podcast on Monday morning explaining this naturally
02:24you're going to get a little bit of a limited alliteration and wordplay with the school ball scope from Mr.
02:29Boris but it's really interesting so again it was about a lima bean sized loose body that was in there
02:37and Neil Eletrash one of the preeminent surgeons in Major League Baseball as it pertains to shoulders and elbows and
02:45everything of the
02:46sort Dr. Eletrash effectively put a needle type of device in there took a peek around the elbow found the
02:56loose body extracted loose body and you didn't have the tissue irritation and bleeding that a scope typically would so
03:05this is really not hampering the ramp up process for school at all and it sounds like honestly from what
03:11Scott Boris laid out a novel new
03:15and really effective way to go about a scope and really effective way to go about a scope and an
03:19extraction of a loose body based on my expertise I think this was the right move I agree with Dr.
03:25Neil Eletrash I think this was the right plan I feel like everybody that confirms the Jeff Passan report you
03:33know Jeff Passan reports a trade and then somebody says yeah I can confirm that this trade happened like yeah
03:38me too but no on a serious note I do actually think that that makes
03:45makes a lot of sense and checks out because usually and through talking to some players in the past I
03:49know I talked about this with Niner a lot because all the racquetball plus baseball that he played in his
03:54whole life he had a couple different like loose body issues usually the first one doesn't get to a point
03:59where it's bothering you and it's like the second or third so that by the time they go in there
04:04there's several loose bodies in there so the fact that like scuba noticed it so quickly but it also didn't
04:09interrupt anything and they're able to just take one chip
04:12out seems to be like a pretty rare scenario there at least from what I understand so the fact that
04:19he can come back potentially quicker and like it's one thing that we were hearing these timelines being thrown out
04:23even before this and you say ah that sounds ambitious and you know it's another thing for Scott Forrest to
04:28be like oh this was an extra easy scope he's gonna be fine knowing the free agency's on the other
04:33side yeah right it's the very tangible real situation where you can very much understand that you know this is
04:40gonna be a quicker
04:40turnaround and anytime you're not invading the body you know as much and cutting open as much even if it
04:46is arthroscopic obviously the body's gonna recover quicker and I mean this is huge for the tigers and huge for
04:52scuba I mean if he only misses a few starts we're talking about like is this guy gonna lose you
04:57know 100 million dollars if he comes back I don't know what the timeline exactly is did you mention that
05:01have they said what that would be timeline I the initial forecast of the timeline was going to be two
05:07to three months right apparently they can cut it down
05:10down to about six weeks here which would be amazing
