00:04so for laser hair removal like this is what the Athena device is okay it's very different from
00:10an IPL okay IPL is intense pulse light it can only be used for Fitzpatrick's one to four now
00:19do you guys know your Fitzpatrick types do you know what it is okay that's something that we can
00:26also like always take a form and attach it to here as well so it's easy for you to actually
00:33decipher
00:34so Fitzpatrick one will go through some of the skin type number one is your albinos your redheads
00:41your gingers okay I only have one in my actual entire practice for both clinics okay so it's not
00:49very common that you get those people number two is your blonde with their blue eyes okay it could be
00:55anything European Greek anything but that's what they need to be okay number three is your
01:02brunettes with brown eyes okay could be European Greek Italians anything like that number four
01:09is your Chinese population it it's also your Middle Eastern population okay that's mostly what your
01:15number fours are okay it could be some Afghani people as well okay number five is the South Asian
01:21population okay so it that is all your Indian Pakistani Sri Lankan some Tamils if they're lighter
01:29skinned okay and number six is all your African American your Sudanese your like Jamaican anybody
01:40with very dark skin tone now sometimes we have Sri Lankans and Tamils that are super super dark
01:46I usually put them at a six as well okay because what will happen is they will burn if we
01:53put them
01:53at a lower level okay now let's talk about what the precautions are so biggest precaution for laser hair
02:00removal is light so we want to make sure that people are not tanning beforehand or after the treatment so
02:08if people are vacationing we want to make sure that the laser hair removal is done at least 10 days
02:14prior to
02:15their vacation and then when they're back we want to wait 10 days especially if they've been in a hot
02:21country where they're tanning we want to wait for 10 days as well and say they're usually a Fitzpatrick
02:27four I would probably go up to Fitzpatrick five for one treatment of theirs okay so you adjust it so
02:34we're not causing any burns okay and the machine is smart so it's like it will help you to but
02:41you need
02:41to know your Fitzpatrick you just have to choose one two three four five now here what is mostly your
02:46population two to three two to three is your most population okay so you you guys need to know that
02:57okay now let's talk about how long it takes people to be treated with laser hair removal is it permanent
03:05that's one of the biggest questions is it permanent it's as permanent as anything is you have to do
03:12touch-up treatments okay it is it is like you're getting in and you're zapping every single follicle
03:18which takes time okay so it's not it doesn't happen instantly okay so realistic expectations is about like
03:2612 treatments okay some people start with six and then they go up to 12 okay with South Asian population
03:34you want a little bit more maybe 18 treatments okay their treatments are spaced out every like 30 to 45
03:42days okay so every 30 to 45 days you have somebody coming in to get their laser hair removal it
03:51should
03:51take you about an hour okay in the beginning it'll take you about an hour and a half to get
03:55your settings
03:57but after that it should take you an hour for head to toe for a complete treatment okay it's pretty
04:06good
04:06for any age group okay now there's a lot of young girls we don't have too many young guys that
04:12are doing
04:13laser hair removal because for the obvious reasons adolescents want to boys want to keep their hair but
04:19young girls teens you have to wait for them to at least to be menstruating for at least two years
04:25before
04:26you start laser hair removal people to be off of Accutane for at least three months before I start
04:31laser hair removal on the face doesn't mean that they cannot do laser hair removal on like other
04:38areas but I actually have a rule in my clinic that like you know what when they're on Accutane I
04:43want
04:43it out of their system completely for three months and then they can come in and get their treatments done
04:48okay we we just have to be safe for our clients and that's it okay there are also like drugs
04:57that
04:58could actually increase the photosensitivity of the laser hair removal it could be steroids or anything
05:04so we want to make sure that we have a thorough health history for clients okay any kind of I
05:11have
05:12like a lot more young people in my clinic that have pacemakers they are not candidates okay we don't use
05:18the device on anybody with pacemakers defibrillators okay anybody with like um active cancers going
05:27through chemotherapy immunosuppressant therapy okay we don't do laser hair removal on them okay pregnancy
05:35breastfeeding we don't do it on them because there's no research on that is it in like do you make
05:41them
05:41fill up the form yes there's a consent form there's a questionnaire I usually have my consultants down
05:47with the client beforehand and get all the health information thoroughly from them like we ask
05:54questions along with filling up the health form we do just because I want that interaction because it's
06:01so interesting like how much people hold back from you because I recently learned about one of my clients
06:07who I've been treating like like just the other day he told me oh yeah I had a liver transplant
06:11I was like
06:12whoa baby like you know you're a young guy so like when people are self-reporting we have to be
06:19careful about how much they're telling us and what we know right so that's important so now after care so
06:28obviously like anybody who's really sickly and should be in the hospital should not be getting laser
06:33hair removal from you they're not your they're not the clients that we want once people are done their
06:38chemotherapy and stuff yes once they're cleared from oncology they are welcome to go ahead and start
06:44after care for laser hair removal we want to avoid like pools saunas any kind of steam rooms I I
06:53tell my
06:53clients for at least four days the only thing is is because we've zapped the follicles like it could get
06:58give a little bit more irritation and like it could give a slight infection as well so that's why we
07:04ask
07:04them to avoid that sunlight is the biggest thing now we don't really stop laser hair removal in the
07:10summer it does dip down a bit but I noticed last year it kind of maintained so I make my
07:16clients wear
07:17up and down that they're going to be using sunscreen covering their body to make sure to avoid a burn
07:22because the biggest thing is is that we do laser hair removal it is a light it's a diode and
07:28then they're
07:28going to go outside have the sun exposure and then they will burn and the biggest place is obviously
07:34their face right so I like at least 40 spf like on the face like you know in the summer
07:42which I'm
07:42making people kind of buy at the clinic so I know that they're using it okay but we can only
07:48educate
07:48them this is all about education and then it's really clients are their own people we can't go home with
07:53them
07:56I love Elta MD okay so and also like afterwards no shaving for up to like four days later prior
08:06to
08:07coming in we want clients shaving themselves 24 hours to their appointment time we're not here to
08:13shave clients we could help in certain areas that clients may not be able to reach but clients are to
08:18shave themselves to prep for their appointment okay afterwards we tell them don't shave for up to four
08:25days after the treatment they can shave four days later sunlight we've told them saunas and all these
08:32things skincare I tell everybody to avoid like any kind of active ingredients for one week let's turn
08:37on the device okay so there's a few things like with this device when it's plugged in the water filter
08:46does have to be turned on if it's off the device will turn on okay so we do have to
08:52turn this on
08:55okay and then it will take a minute to now turn on because I've turned off the filter okay so
09:02when we
09:02turn off the water filter and turn it on it takes about like 60 to 90 seconds to turn back
09:08on okay one of
09:10the common calls I get all the time is it's not working and I'm like okay it's plugged in filters
09:20on did
09:21you check check the emergency button it there by law it has to have an emergency button right like all
09:27devices too so that's something that you guys should always be checking yourself as well okay
09:32here when you get to this screen you can touch anywhere okay now we only have one applicator
09:41to choose this is a contact treatment okay this is not one of the ones that you're going from here
09:47this is contact treatment you need ultrasound gel I like the clear one you could use the blue one but
09:54I
09:54was always taught to use clear ultrasound gel okay so we need to layer the client with ultrasound gel for
10:00this okay we will choose the applicator now male or female it's already set to english let's say we're
10:08doing female okay now this is where this device has all the fitzpatrick okay there's one let's go through
10:16it again your albinos redheads number two your I say eastern european but that could be your caucasians
10:24anybody with blue eyes and blonde hair number three is more brunettes brown hair number four is your
10:33chinese population your afghani population your middle eastern population number five is your like
10:42south asian population mostly and number six is your african-american population okay but also it could be dark
10:50tamils and siri lankins like I said I'll repeat it if somebody goes on vacation say you go on vacation
10:56kushi and you you tan up a bit more than you usually would okay and it's been 10 days so
11:03now it's safe to
11:04do the laser hair removal but I'll probably do your next session out of the six rather than a five
11:09okay
11:10so it's not as intense you'll still get the same treatments but it's just to avoid burns
11:16what I love about this device is like thank god we haven't had a single burn from it okay
11:21it's very safe to use from pittspatrick one to six okay like a lot of times they'll market you to
11:29buy
11:29it saying oh it's safe and it's not completely safe but this one like we've never I've had the
11:35I had the pilot so I've had this one in my clinic since the day we opened and I've never
11:39had issues with
11:40it we get really good results so I say 95 you have to check people's hormones too so somebody
11:46has PCOS or hypothyroidism or or like young adolescents or somebody going through menopause
11:54of course your hormones are changing so it's you have to take all that into consideration
12:00like it's not magic okay so it's not magic and we don't want people to think that they'll tell you
12:06oh another clinic is that's not true okay like it takes time to kill each follicle
12:13I like this device more than IPL because IPL IPL I like to use IPL for more skin rejuvenation now
12:20we
12:21could use IPL for hair removal as well okay but one it's very strong like you have to actually really
12:30really be careful of the sun with that severe burns can happen and two for a business like
12:36it's not that great because even though they say you could use it up to Fitzpatrick six I would never
12:41use it past Fitzpatrick for my clinic this is catered to everybody and I love that so say we're doing
12:48your laser hair removal so I'm going to five okay so I've chosen five now they've already programmed
12:55everything into the device but you still need to know parameters this is the treatment parameters
13:04so it does come with its parameters okay it's all listed here for you okay there's female and then
13:13there's male as well okay everything I went through like pre and post it's it's here contraindications
13:23it says severe diabetes hypertension heart disease patients okay it says about keloids now I've treated
13:31people with keloids this is where your clinical decision making comes in if I have somebody with
13:36keloids over here I just talk to clients and say listen there's always a risk and we're told not to
13:42do
13:42it it's up to you if you want to do it here's the form you can sign saying you are
13:46okay to do it okay
13:47so you can amend things you can make up a form I'll have a little separate sheet that my clinic
13:54manager
13:54will just make up saying that although this is a contraindication like based on our consultation
14:01to date like you are actually like you know wanting to go ahead and proceed with the treatment like
14:07you know based on the recommendations and also like nothing's going to really happen because severe
14:15diabetes severe hypertension to me means people that should be in the hospital okay so like you
14:21know or very unwell people they're not worried about hair removal okay they're not coming into your clinic
14:26now you want to see some end points when you're doing hair removal okay so end points are things like
14:36you might see some redness to the area that you're treating that's totally fine okay don't get scared
14:42about that redness is okay okay you might even smell the follicles burning like you might smell
14:50like skin burning that's what it smells like that is normal as well clients should only feel like either
14:57mild heat or mild prickles okay if they're if it's intense i would turn down the settings if they're if
15:04it's really hurting i turn down the settings now this has an amazing cooling system built in it's a little
15:11too strong for my liking so i'm going to tell you how i set it up so say and each
15:16area is already set
15:18in here but i do turn it down a bit okay like and then i have my guideline here so
15:25i actually have it
15:27sitting there in the clinic as well so say we're going to you so say we're doing your leg today
15:33okay
15:34so i will choose fitzpatrick 5 i'll choose your leg it says 50 and now i also want to know
15:43have you
15:44ever done laser hair removal before never so i'm going to turn it down just a bit okay probably by
15:51five
15:51because it's going to hurt because when you have more follicles it's going to hurt with each treatment
15:57like you have less and less follicles so then you can start to go up okay we're at 45 okay
16:04and you
16:05say i feel nothing i usually do one or two zaps you say i feel nothing i will go up
16:11by two okay and then
16:13i do it again and i show you how does that feel you say okay i'm beginning to feel a
16:19little bit of heat
16:19i say okay i'm going to test the waters here okay then i zap you and you're like okay that's
16:25what i
16:25can tolerate we're going to write this down i keep a chart of everybody and we actually we put it
16:31into
16:31our computer system but we have like sticky notes here that we just put on the girls usually write
16:38like face like underarms arms and then they just write down like 48 6 30 this will never change but
16:46still they they like to write it down like that okay so you'll write face you'll write 35 6 30
16:54like
16:55leg you'll write down say 50 6 30 so for your next time you always want to try to go
17:01up by one in each
17:03area so again the next time the client comes for their next treatment you're going to have a new sticky
17:09note with where you left off you're going to update it here so say last time we did 50
17:16on your legs today i'm going up to 52 say and you tolerated it well so i'm going to go
17:22up to 52 so
17:23i'm going to update that in your chart the biggest thing is is you want to make sure that nobody
17:28feels
17:29severe pain it should just feel like mild prickles like it's going to be painful but like mild we don't
17:37want anybody to be in moderate pain because when people are in moderate pain that means that like
17:42it's a little too strong okay and the cooling system is so good on this sometimes it can actually
17:48minimize what they're feeling okay so you always go safer than and then bold okay with this because
17:56with this when burns with these kind of devices happen it's really hard to fix one thing i did forget
18:02to tell you guys is you never go over tattoos so tattoos is very important so that's one thing that
18:09when
18:10we don't ask that in the consultation but say that like i have you on my bed and you're doing
18:15your
18:15chest and your back i'll be like do you have any tattoos in this area you'll be like yes or
18:22no say harry
18:22says yes i have this nice big tattoo on my back so now there's two options one you avoid the
18:30area
18:30completely that is number one option and this is something that you need to talk to your client about
18:38number two is you need to have a white eyeliner pencil you guys have seen the white eyeliner pencil
18:44sometimes use use it for botox and fillers to mark you gotta you gotta color in that whole tattoo
18:52all of it and then you can run the laser on top of it okay but remember there's always a
18:59risk because
19:00this will actually give a little bit of like irritation to the tattoo and it will get rid of the
19:07ink so the second that you nip somebody even if you're this far away if you nip get that close
19:15and
19:15it's not covered or there's no white marker on it you will actually risk lightening that tattoo and then
19:22people will be mad this is something important during like your actual treatment you need to know
19:29so now we're back to you we're doing you we're doing your leg we're ready to go i put gel
19:35on your leg
19:36you've shaved 24 hours coming in i will press play it will automatically take you to three times the
19:45cooling never ever leave it on this i know that it says that it can go up to minus 35
19:52but imagine if you
19:53have gel on somebody and you have you put this minus 35 you're never going to be able to glide
20:00it's going to get stuck and you're going to have your finger on the trigger you're going to burn
20:05somebody so you want it to glide put it on one always for everything okay if we if i keep
20:14this on
20:14three in a minute you're going to see all the frost on here and it becomes very difficult to get
20:18rid of as
20:19well you have to start taking it apart so always put it on one okay this is a glider so
20:26you can glide
20:27sometimes people are pulsing too sometimes on the face you need to pulse now you guys have never done
20:33laser hair removal so it would have been nice if we had like a full body to do today but
20:38like i can
20:39show you how i maneuver it in different parts of the body but you want to know how do i
20:45do it on the
20:45face how do i do it on the underarms how do i do it on the arms bikini like everything
20:50you want to
20:51know how so but i can mimic it so you guys can see but we will not do the treatment
20:56okay and then
20:57the area that we actually do the treatment there will actually go ahead and do the treatment so
21:03i mean i can do any one of you if you don't mind you can come and i can show
21:08you with this
21:09you have to protect your eyes and the client's eyes
