00:00And thus, it's the end of the summer.
00:02And now the time to take stock and look back at what we did during it.
00:05I mainly watched films, so here's a list of some of my favourite films of the summer season.
00:10Now, lists like this are kind of a bit superfluous, as studios spread out their tent poles throughout the year.
00:15Big hits like a Minecraft movie and Sinners came out in April, a month before the summer movie started.
00:20But I'm keeping this list restricted to films that came out from May to August,
00:24and yes, that will include streamed movies in this list as well.
00:27Also, it was kind of hard to find what film qualifies as a blockbuster.
00:32And there are two films I liked, but I was confused on if they belong on this list,
00:37and that's why we have Honourable Mentions.
00:43The Life of Chuck.
00:45Mike Flanagan's first film in six years since 2019's Doctor Sleep
00:49has changed direction from the director's horror-based work,
00:51but he still gets to execute those horror film skills successfully here,
00:55delivering a Stephen King adaptation with a lot of heart
00:57and a great ensemble cast all getting their own moments to shine.
01:03The Phoenician Scheme.
01:05Wes Anderson's espionage caper is a lot of fun,
01:08but behind the intricacies and the humour is a sense of yearning for times lost in connection,
01:13with Benedito Dardaro and Mia Freppleton
01:15giving great performances that match Anderson's style.
01:18Now with those two out of the way, let's get to the main event.
01:24Final Destinations.
01:26Bloodlines.
01:26I haven't seen a Final Destination movie before,
01:29but I do know the formula and the premise.
01:31See also Osgood Perkins' excellent The Monkey.
01:34But I had a lot of fun with this film,
01:35managing to have fun with the premise
01:36and crafting some excellent Rube Goldberg deaths,
01:39but it doesn't let the fun underscore the dice sakes of this film,
01:42as it is a family being killed.
01:43Add in an excellent swan song for the dearly Miss Tony Todd,
01:46and you've got yourself an excellent horror film.
01:51Happy Gilmore 2!
01:53Ten years ago, Adam Sandler made probably two films that would define his career,
01:56or ever he intended to.
01:58Pixels and The Ridiculous Six.
01:59One being his last big theatrical film,
02:01outside a Transylvania sequel, or Uncut Gems,
02:04and the other being his first in a long line of Netflix films.
02:07Now comes this legacy sequel to one of his best films,
02:09and while it's a bit too full of callbacks and cameos,
02:12Sandler puts in the effort here and does some good work here.
02:15He adds some pathos amongst the laughs,
02:16and it works really well.
02:17An excellent crowd pleaser.
02:19This film is available on Netflix.
02:23K-pop Demon Hunters!
02:25I've already reviewed this film,
02:26and also examined why it became such a big hit.
02:33But to reiterate,
02:34K-pop Demon Hunters is an energetic,
02:36bright and funny film that taps into a modern zeitgeist,
02:39but manages to chart its own story regardless.
02:41The animation is great here,
02:42and excels when it gets to be very cartoony.
02:44This film, as you well know by now,
02:46is available on Netflix.
02:51Materialists!
02:51This is one I debated putting on here
02:53because of one that's romantic comedy,
02:54but one that is made by a director
02:56whose last film was nominated for an Oscar,
02:57so it has that little prestige element,
02:59but it's my list,
03:00and it's my rules.
03:01Anyway,
03:02while many were a bit shocked
03:03that the film we got was different from what was marketed,
03:05I found Celine Song's examination on modern Dane culture
03:09and deconstruction of romantic comedy excellent.
03:12Fits in line with the themes of past lives,
03:14especially with regards to distance,
03:16this time on a financial angle,
03:18and Dakota Johnson proves she's more than Fifty Shades
03:20or Madame Web.
03:21It's probably one of the year's most suffices films,
03:23but I think it's one of the best.
03:28Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning
03:30While I like these films,
03:31I'm not one of those who treat them as the saviour of cinema,
03:34but Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning
03:36ends the series, for now, on a high.
03:38Well, yes, it is a bit too front-loaded
03:40with exposition in the first half,
03:41but when it gets going,
03:42it gets really going.
03:44The submarine sequence and dogfight scenes
03:45are standouts
03:46and were amazing to watch on the big screen.
03:51Predator!
03:52Killer of Killers!
03:53I feel this is what streaming movies should do more of,
03:56especially if they're spin-offs of big franchises.
03:58This animated spin-off of the Predator movies
04:00feels like a direct-to-video movie from 2007
04:02that you mostly watch via clips on YouTube,
04:04but this film boasts three great little stories
04:07set in different time periods
04:08that are all strong in their own,
04:09and then the Predator shows up
04:10and flips the script on them.
04:12The film manages to focus on certain aspects of the Predators
04:14and matching it to a different period of human history
04:16is an inspired choice.
04:17The animation is good as well,
04:18which has a painterly look to it.
04:19This film is streaming on Hulu in America
04:21and on Disney Plus overseas.
04:26Super Man!
04:27James Gunn managed to do
04:28what no other Superman movie has done before
04:30and embrace the weirdness that is comic books,
04:32kicking this new DC Universe off
04:34on the right foot
04:35with a hopeful tone and a timely message.
04:37David Cornswet's turn in the trunks
04:39is an excellent one
04:40and Nicholas Holt's Luthor is a despicable one.
04:42It's a great film.
04:43Super, you might say.
04:47The Fantastic Four
04:48The First Steps
04:49Marvel's first family arrives
04:51to the Marvel Cinematic Universe
04:52and we get to see the four embracing
04:53the Silver Age stories of the Lee Kirby run
04:55that made the Marvel Universe,
04:57finally getting Galactus in his purple glory
04:58and being a bit more introspective.
05:00A bit like Eternals,
05:01the other Kirby adaptation in the MCU.
05:04The cast here all do good work,
05:05all getting time to shine,
05:06especially as the film focuses on the family aspect.
05:09While there's some bits
05:09it's not getting that much focus due to editing,
05:11it's still a fantastic film.
05:15The Naked Gun
05:16This lived up to the hype for me.
05:18The film manages to recapture
05:19the joke per minute of the original films
05:21with all the effort put into it.
05:22Liam Neeson goes all in
05:23with the silliness
05:24with a straight-laced performance
05:25aided by a game Pamela Anderson.
05:3028 years later,
05:31Danny Boyle and Alex Garland
05:33go back to an infected England
05:34and taps into a plethora of themes,
05:36ranging from social aggression,
05:37masculinity,
05:38colonialism,
05:39to make a great horror film.
05:40Boyle and Garland also play around
05:41and the fact that the zombies in this film
05:42aren't the undead ones that we know
05:44and give
05:44probably one of the most
05:45poignant moments in a horror film this year.
05:47I'm excited to see
05:48what Nia Costa does
05:49with the sequel in January.
05:51So those were my favourite films of the summer.
05:52Agree? Disgree?
