00:00Happy New Year, when you're watching this, because I wrote and made this episode well in advance,
00:05and also it may not be New Year's when you watch this, considering how much lists I make.
00:10Anyway, 2024 was a midly pre-mix in general, but as we enter a new year, it's good to look
00:16forward,
00:16mostly to the films, because yeesh, and 2025 seems to have a pretty interesting slate ahead of us,
00:22so let's get into it.
00:25Honourable Mentions.
00:26So a little houseclean in this section is for films I'm interested in seeing,
00:30but either didn't make it into the final ten, or I just found more interesting,
00:35but I don't know if it's getting a release this year, especially if it might be released at a festival,
00:40where it sometimes takes years for it to be seen by the general public, so here are the honourable mentions.
00:48Aztec Batman.
00:49Now, on the surface, this may seem like another animated Batman movie,
00:53those usually are a dime a dozen on the DCV market,
00:56but this one is something you should check out, mostly for the premise.
01:00What if Batman, but instead of Gotham City, it's Aztec Mexico?
01:03This looks interesting, blending real history with comic book superheroics,
01:08with Hernan Cortez being a version of Two-Face,
01:10and it's cool to see an interpretation of a hero from a different country than we're used to,
01:14so there's something to look forward to in that.
01:17Queens of the Dead.
01:19On the surface, this might seem like another comedic zombie film,
01:22but what piqued my interest for this film is who's directing it.
01:25Tina Romero, daughter of George A. Romero,
01:28so yeah, it's cool to see if this might be like her father's,
01:31or that, most likely, judging by the title and the comedic set-up,
01:34Strikeout in her own.
01:36It's got an interesting cast as well,
01:38so yeah, I hope to see if this gets released this year.
01:43Red Sonja.
01:44MJ Bassett is a filmmaker I don't see talked about much.
01:47She's done a lot of action and horror movies,
01:48like 2002's Death Watch, or that Megan Fox Line movie from 2020,
01:52and she's done TV work on action shows like Ash vs. Evil Dead, Strike Back,
01:57and was first trans person to work on an MCU project
01:59by directing an episode of Iron Fist.
02:02Now, she's done an adaptation of Red Sonja,
02:04and if you've seen her last Howard adaptation, Solomon Cain,
02:06then you can see she has to try to direct it,
02:08and I'm very interested to see what can she do with this property.
02:13Retreat.
02:14Now, this looks interesting.
02:15Retreat is a thriller film with an all-death cast,
02:17and that's something we don't usually see a lot of.
02:19Now, not a lot of disabled people get of opportunities like this,
02:22and I think if we want to see films that reflect the world we live in,
02:25we should champion films that do stuff like this.
02:27And now, onto the 10 films I'm excited for this year.
02:33Number 10.
02:34Battle of Thorn High.
02:36Jokot Anwar is a filmmaker from Indonesia I'm interested in,
02:40but I haven't watched most of his films.
02:41I've seen his Satan's Slaves remake slash prequel,
02:43and I'm interested in what he's made,
02:45which ranges from horror films, dramas,
02:47to even Indonesia's very own superhero franchise.
02:49And his next film, Battle of Thorn High,
02:51sits to be the first collaboration between a Hollywood studio and Indonesia,
02:55and that seems pretty neat.
02:57Number 9.
02:5828 years later.
02:5928 days later, to me, is several things.
03:01One of the best modern zombie movies,
03:03one of the best British movies,
03:04and one of the best British horror films,
03:06and that's a good lineup to be a part of.
03:07So now we're getting another sequel with original director Dane Boyle,
03:10original writer Alex Garland,
03:11and original star Cillian Murphy,
03:13back with actors like Jodie Comte,
03:14and what seems to be the start of a new trilogy.
03:19And, judged by the trailer, looks really good.
03:21I might be infected with Rage Vibes,
03:23because I'm not walking to see this film.
03:26Number 8.
03:27Wildwood.
03:27It wouldn't be an anticipated list
03:29without at least one entry
03:30from one of the prestige animation studios.
03:33Elio looks fun,
03:34co-directed by Domi Shi,
03:35who else did Funtime Red,
03:37we're getting another Zootopia movie,
03:39and Bad Guys 2 looks fun,
03:41but it's like as Wildwood,
03:42which has piqued my interest,
03:43because I don't usually pump out a film every year
03:46like the other studios,
03:47so it feels like an event.
03:48The film also boasts a good cast,
03:49and judging by the teaser trailer,
03:51it still has that handcrafted look
03:52that the other films usually have.
03:55Number 7.
03:56The Naked Gun.
03:57I feel like it's been said before,
03:58and I'm going to repeat it here,
04:00that good spoof movies don't get made anymore,
04:02especially in the vein of the Zucker,
04:04Abrams, and Zucker films,
04:06with their blend of Joker Minnet
04:07and sight gags that gave their films
04:08their own identity,
04:09and that is often hard to replicate.
04:11So imagine my excitement
04:12that Zuff McFarland and Akiva Schaefer
04:14of The Lonely Island
04:15are making a reboot
04:16with perfectly cast Liam Neeson
04:17in the Frank Drebin role.
04:19It seems like a perfect fit.
04:22Number 6.
04:23The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagno.
04:25Another animated film,
04:26this time from director
04:27Sylvain Chaumet.
04:29Director behind films like
04:30Triplets of Bellevue
04:31and The Illusionist.
04:33Yeah, so if you know your animated movies,
04:35or your French movies,
04:36you know.
04:38Number 5.
04:39Frankenstein and The Bride.
04:41Showing a number 5 spot,
04:42because my list,
04:43by rules,
04:44and because they're very similar,
04:45Guillermo del Toro's
04:46Frankenstein,
04:47and Mary General's The Bride.
04:48Both are adaptations
04:49of the Mary Shelley novel,
04:51one is by a director
04:51who's an obvious match
04:52for the source material,
04:53generally by his appreciation
04:54of the genre
04:55and how it shows in his films,
04:56and the other seems like
04:57an interesting take.
04:58It's a musical,
04:58with a good cast behind it.
05:00It's feeding my Frankenstein itch.
05:05Number 4.
05:06The Fantastic Four.
05:07The First Steps.
05:08Obviously,
05:08at the number 4 spot,
05:10it's The Fantastic Four.
05:12Marvel's first family
05:13finally comes
05:13to the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
05:15and with a good cast
05:16and director behind it,
05:18and with the same being
05:18an alternate 1960s,
05:20this film seems like
05:21a good time,
05:21and it'll be very interesting
05:22to see how it ties in
05:24with Marvel's
05:24multi-versatile machinations.
05:28Number 3.
05:29Wake Up, Dead Man.
05:30Rian Johnson is doing
05:31another 9th and South Mystery
05:32with Daniel Craig in it,
05:33and like always,
05:34it has a good cast set,
05:35it'll do another good twist
05:36within a twist-like lawsuit,
05:38and hopefully it'll be
05:38a good time.
05:41Number 2.
05:42The Life of Chuck.
05:43Mike Flanagan's latest film
05:45for the first and six years
05:46is coming,
05:47and already has racked up
05:48a lot of praise
05:49at its festival run,
05:50and in the people's choice
05:51of all that tick.
05:52It sees Flanagan
05:52adapt Stephen King again,
05:54and it seems to be doing
05:54not in the vein of a horror film,
05:56like he's known for,
05:57but in the vein
05:58of a Frank Capra film.
05:59Seems like it's going
06:00to be great.
06:02Number 1.
06:03Superman.
06:04James Gunn is doing
06:04a Superman movie,
06:05and if you can see
06:06how he managed to balance
06:07his optimism with
06:07the even cruder
06:08and weirder elements
06:09of the Marvel Universe,
06:10and judging by his
06:11previous DC work,
06:12then he's a perfect fit.
06:13It's also exciting
06:14to see this kick off
06:15another DC film universe
06:16that feels more confident
06:17and more embracing
06:18of the elements of Superman
06:19that haven't gotten
06:20the love in previous films.
06:21I'm really excited
06:22to see what James Gunn
06:23can do with this,
06:24and those were my
06:25anticipated films of 2025.
