03:11RIGHT.
03:13I'M HERE FOR A WEEK.
03:14YEAH.
03:14WELL, FIVE DAYS.
03:15RIGHT.
03:15WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM ME?
03:17WELL, IDEALLY, END OF THIS WEEK, I WANT TO BE ABLE TO JUST, LIKE I'VE HAD A TRAINEE LAD
03:21WITH
03:22ME, YOU TO BE ABLE TO DO THE JOB THAT I CAN DO WITHOUT ME SECOND GUESSING QUESTION OR ANYTHING.
03:27I WANT TO BE CONFIDENT ENOUGH THAT YOU CAN BACK UP, LOAD THAT TRUCK, TOW IT AWAY, AND DONE
03:32EVERYTHING RIGHT.
03:33RIGHT.
03:33THAT'S WHAT THE GOAL IS.
03:34THAT'S THE GOAL IS.
03:35RIGHT.
03:35NOT DAMAGING THE TRUCK.
03:37NOT DAMAGING THE TRUCK.
03:38DAMAGE-FREE RECOVERY OF A CUSTOMER'S VEHICLE.
03:39DAMAGE.
03:40RIGHT.
03:40I LIKE THAT.
03:41DAMAGE-FREE RECOVERY OF A CUSTOMER'S VEHICLE.
03:43RIGHT.
03:44THAT'S THE END GOAL.
03:46THIS IS A WHOLE NEW DISCIPLINE FOR GRIMSBY'S MOST FAMOUS TRUCK MECHANIC TO LEARN.
03:52FROM TOING BREAKDOWNS TO TACKLING THE COMPLEXITY OF A ROLL-OVER OR JACK KNIFE.
03:58I KNOW A FAIR BIT ABOUT TRUCKS, BUT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT RECOVERING THEM.
04:01SO MY EYES AND EARS ARE OPEN TO THE KNOWLEDGE.
04:07THE TOOL THAT GUY WILL HAVE TO MASTER IS JAY'S SUPER TRUCK, WHICH COSTS, WAIT FOR IT, 400,000 POUNDS.
04:17640 HORSEPOWER, 80 TON TRAIN WEIGHT ON IT, DOUBLE DRIVE, 6x4, XXL CAB ON IT.
04:22BIG OTHER THING.
04:23YEAH, LOVELY, MAKE.
04:24YOUR TRUCK.
04:25NO ONE ELSE DRIVES IT?
04:26NO.
04:26RIGHT.
04:28UNLUCKY GUY.
04:30WE'RE HOPING THAT WE CAN SHOW YOU ENOUGH THAT WHEN WE'RE ONSIDE IT ROAD, I CAN LET YOU LOOSE.
04:34RIGHT.
04:34AND YOU'RE ALL RIGHT, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
04:36WELL, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT.
04:36WE'LL JUST GIVE YOU A QUICK RUN.
04:37I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THAT.
04:38YEAH, WHAT SORT OF KIT WE'VE GOT AND WHAT WE'VE RUN ON IT, SO...
04:42I MEAN, WE'RE A BIT SPORT WITH THESE NEW ONES.
04:44WE'VE GOT HOT AND WASH.
04:45OH BLOODY, YEAH.
04:47HOT AND WASH.
04:48YEAH.
04:48GO ON.
04:50LITERALLY, SOAP DISPENSERS AND PAPER TOWELS THERE.
04:53THAT'S NICE AND WIND, AND THAT'S LOVELY.
04:58AND THEN, SO, ALL THE STOOLS AND SHACKLES WE HAVE IN HERE LOOK.
05:01THAT'S TIDY IN HERE, ISN'T IT?
05:03YEAH.
05:03MAIN REASON IS GUY, YOU CAN WELL IMAGINE IF WE'VE GOT A ROAD CLOSURE,
05:06THE POLICE ARE ON YA, THEY WANT IT OPEN,
05:08WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO PUT HIS HAND ON STUFF.
05:10I COULD LITERALLY BE BLINDFOLDING AND PUT MY HAND ON MY KIT ON THIS.
05:14BIGGEST PROBLEM IS, MISSAS HAS DONE A SUNDAY ROAD, YOU'VE NOT HAD A JOB ALL DAY,
05:17comes half past twelve one o'clock you sit down literally spanners are in your
05:22hand phone rings you're gone you're going out yeah yeah so this has happened
05:26yeah yeah dinner's in dog yeah anybody that's in recovery I'll tell you it's
05:32safe mate yeah right it could be really really taxing on your family as well as
05:39the challenges of being on call over the axle guys got to get his head around the
05:43fact that recovery and winching is rather scientific this is when we're
05:49doing winching right so what we can do on this is for the top boom which is where
05:53the winch cables come out here the older I get the more comfortable I am with
05:57saying I ain't got a clue what I'm doing treat me like a muppet start at the very
06:04beginning so you're right I don't fully understand all I'd have to write yes it's
06:08really simple if you're in single line at six ton yeah and you went through a
06:12snatch block and back you've doubled up here you've got two lots of six yes
06:16it's it's all physics it goes down to physics don't it and that's what we're
06:19working with every day hey I'll learn this it's only the first morning on the
06:22job I'll learn this yeah I don't know what I'm doing and it's not just physics
06:27it's physics in dangerous places the professor will have to remain vigilant at
06:32all times for rogue drivers listing massive part of what we do it's either road
06:38rumble strips if you're working up motorway mate you need to be listening out of them
06:41rumble strips if you hear something coming down on drop what you're doing and have a
06:44look what's coming behind you like because right is that right yes have you
06:48had any near do's I have top of a slip road so technically it was all coned off
06:52police was behind it and I heard the cone thud thud looks up this car's coming at me
06:58the car comes down clips me barrel rolls me down the side of the truck I'm
07:02recovering drink driver yeah he was lucky all right fine yeah you walked away shook up a bit yeah yeah
07:09no yeah physically all right like bit battered and bruised but yeah cracked on
07:13did the job anyway so and it is getting more and more common is it yes yeah
07:17people's being injured at roadside fingers crossed yeah not gonna happen this
07:21week no recoveries take place in all weathers so guys induction plows on in the
07:29rain where he's tested on the bewildering array of levers that control the
07:33trucks most important part it's giant tow hitch I want you to fold the underlift down yeah if guy
07:43gets any of this wrong the company may restrict him to a week of just watching and not doing and
07:49I
07:49will boom down a wrong lever could easily damage a vehicle that spots on that mate yeah but then just
07:59this is how you're gonna do a pre-lift so you'll extend the underlift out perfect that bud all right
08:08yeah spot on so you're extending in on a real job a customer's truck will be balanced on the end
08:16of
08:16here and you want your boom up one wrong move away from falling off and then you want to fold
08:21the
08:21underlift away
08:25spot on that mate
08:36and with that stunning vote of confidence the induction is passed come morning jay and guy will be
08:43officially on call like jay says never get comfortable with your surroundings anything
08:48could happen so yeah I just like I like feeling the pressure of something could go wrong at any moment
08:53this guy will be rescuing real customers in the real world with a very real company reputation at
09:03stake yeah nowhere to hide like look at the trucks bright orange no one's gonna miss you and you've
09:11just mucked up you've dropped a wagon off your itch or you've met a pig's ear of it we and
09:14everyone
09:14knows who you work for yeah there's a lot of pride in this place I don't want to be the
09:21boy to muck it up
09:33yeah first morning on the job what we on well we was here at five I think for a six
09:38o'clock start
09:40there's a operation center down the road all the work comes into there and they distribute it to
09:46whoever so we're waiting for Jake's phone to go all right that guy spends the time productively yeah
09:54tinkering with lorries mind your fingers guy oh yeah looking at lorries half a million quid sat there
10:06yeah yeah yeah mad or discussing lorries the most you just drag it up with a lot wheel then yeah
10:14if
10:14it's quick to get the road open yeah they've got what we call slippery gyms yeah slipping on diesel
10:19as my dad used to say give obviously slipping on diesel talking lorries talking lorries talking
10:25exhaust talking lights just talking lorries yeah before long though the boys are called into action
10:31Jake what's the plan we've got a job come through mate we've got a wind chart look so we've got
10:36a
10:36unit and trailer jackknifed in a field from that we need to accept this job and then we put it
10:41down
10:42they were on route look yeah
10:55the job is 60 miles north of the m1 which gives the control room time to provide some extra
11:01info this is an office here max
11:07hello mate you all right you or guy whoever's not driving have a look at the whatsapp there's some photos
11:11on there give you an idea
11:12lovely sam all right then max thanks for that
11:14good man spot on
11:14in a bit mate
11:15i don't think that's driving away
11:18have you got any gloves i've got gloves if not
11:20i ain't got any gloves
11:21no we'll
11:22as you can see me hands get a fair
11:24i know i know you're like me you want to get mucked in and crack on but
11:27them winch cables obviously you've got a bit sticking out of the rope like that so alpha
11:31safety company policy it's obviously either there's boots and gloves yeah i don't know
11:36that's where we're winching like yeah
11:45right it's down there long just see it
11:49are we thinking here it's not going to be in a drivable state
11:51yeah it looks like though we're going to need this rope closing
11:58an articulated lorry has skidded off a slippery corner
12:02and the white cab unit has spun round into the trailer
12:05wedging itself into a field
12:11no rescue is straightforward
12:13but within seconds of approaching the scene
12:15even the rookie spots this one has an added complication
12:19what are you thinking there boss you can split the diesel tank
12:21it looks like it might just split
12:23i can smell it yeah
12:25yeah it's f***ing out innit
12:26obviously it's full tank it squashed it
12:28yeah
12:29it's where you go down the roots of getting something to suck it out with
12:32it's still coming mate
12:33diesel like this isn't flammable
12:36but it is extremely greasy
12:38letting fuel slosh all over the road
12:40join the recovery
12:41will just make a skiddy corner worse
12:44so it's out with the pump
12:50what i do that pump is
12:55get it half empty
12:56get it half empty
13:03i've got the thick of it out
13:05most of it's on me mind
13:08jay has already clocked the next issue
13:10if they simply drag the truck out from where they're parked
13:13it might stay jackknifed
13:16if we pull this backwards because of the angle that that tractor unit's on there
13:20go on
13:20it might not pull itself out
13:22if we pull it where i'm positioned now
13:24if you can see look that that stairs already out the ground
13:27yeah
13:28well that is what you need as your anchorage point isn't it
13:30it needs to it needs to pivot there
13:32you see how we're thinking about that
13:35jay uses his experience to line up on the left side of the road
13:39while guy will be relying on a bit of his farmyard wisdom
13:44that's generally the way with towing
13:46that we get tractor stuck
13:47pull them out the way they went in
13:49don't try and make
13:50don't try and pull them into more danger
13:51pull them out the way they came in
13:54right boy go on
13:55where do you want us
13:56right
13:56there's them snatch blocks from yesterday morning
13:58can you remember where they are
13:59yeah i do
13:59yeah do you want to get one of them
14:00yeah
14:02the plan is to drag the truck back to the side of the road
14:05where it first lost control
14:07so they spool the winch out
14:09and put it around the truck's rear axle
14:11if you jump on it
14:12and i'll guide it to you
14:13yeah
14:13do you want that mat to lie on your eyes
14:16yeah it'll be alright
14:17i thought you'd say that
14:19round this side then mate
14:20that's it mate
14:21yeah
14:23well you want to link them together
14:24just link that together bud
14:26like that
14:26that's it
14:27yeah
14:27yeah
14:28that's how we find that
14:29right we're happy enough for that
14:32so you need to now go on to your remote
14:34yeah
14:35there look
14:36that's it
14:38flick it onto remote
14:41yeah
14:41yeah
14:42green button
14:43time to find out if guy's connected the trailer properly
14:46righto guy
14:47and if jay's got his calculations right
14:50righto mate
14:51you ready
14:51yeah winch you're in
14:52just gear it up
14:53go on
14:54make you have it
14:57go on
14:57just settle it
14:58yeah just settle it mate
14:59you're alright
14:59it is the tensest part of the job
15:02happy
15:02yeah
15:02keep going
15:03yeah
15:06just keep doing what i'm doing
15:07keep the button on
15:07just keep going what you're going mate
15:08yeah
15:12she's coming round lovely now
15:13you see how it's pulling it out of the jackknife now look
15:16yeah
15:16but yeah
15:17no she's coming out lovely at that
15:18go on what's that noise
15:19tyres scrub
15:20it's just the tyres going sideways on there like
15:22yeah
15:24what I'm doing is we'll get in straight
15:26so we've got enough room to turn the wreck around
15:28to get past
15:28and get in front of him
15:29yeah
15:29don't ever keep winching and block yourself in
15:34righto mate
15:34that's us
15:35you stop winching
15:36winch out
15:37the recovery has worked perfectly
15:39and our guy is off to a good start with his new job
15:43what do you want to give us a bit more slack mate
15:45so i can get that off
15:46he's mad for it
15:47yeah sound job mate
15:48very hands on
15:49very mechanically minded
15:51so i'm not having to repeat myself to him
15:53tell him once
15:53god we need it off
15:54yeah of course we do
15:55and he's on it
15:56jay has no problem putting guy on the spot
15:58and testing him about the technicalities
16:01what would you do now to drop that trailer
16:04just think about what we've done to recover it
16:07well you put the shunt brake on so you put the part brake back on
16:09exactly that
16:10that's what i'm looking for
16:11legs down
16:11that's it
16:12otherwise you'd be running down the road
16:14you know because there's so much happening
16:15you could quite easily forget that
16:17spot on mate
16:18a relief truck arrives to tow the trailer away
16:22you will get a bit of bend in that boom look
16:24i can see that
16:25while guy and jay hitched the damaged unit up
16:28for a trip to the repairers
16:32first impressions of jay
16:34absolute pride in his work
16:35happy
16:36the ultimate professional
16:38right come on underneath look with us
16:41just twist your fork a little bit
16:43that's it
16:46that's it
16:47yeah i turned up here with about
16:5110% knowledge i suppose
16:52of truck recovery
16:56i've had a day with jay
16:58probably 11% on
17:02what to learn mate
17:03mate honestly yeah
17:04for a job like that
17:06i think you've done cracking mate
17:07i was impressed with how
17:09little faff there was
17:11and it's because people know what they're doing
17:16next stop a garage in sheffield
17:19but not before indulging in a key part of a job like this
17:23chewing the fat
17:25that's what i like it guy you generally don't know what you're going to be doing from one day to
17:28the next
17:29who you're going to meet
17:29that's how i've been about ever since i was a kid
17:31yeah
17:31i started at my dad's at bloody 12 year old
17:33like fixing trucks used to do all the school holidays
17:35yeah
17:37you know i mean i love the job
17:38yeah well ironically i got suspended from school for not going
17:41didn't go because they told me i can't go no more
17:43you're right
17:44yeah
17:44but i learned more being with my dad than i ever did in school
17:48yeah you're right
17:50especially life skills and stuff like that
17:51yeah yeah
18:00the mission finishes with a set of photos
18:03to prove jay and guy haven't created any extra damage
18:07he's asking if you want to take another photo
18:09and then you go to your next position and just work your way around
18:15how have i enjoyed my first day as a road warrior
18:19i'm not a road warrior i've just been sat with jay in a wagon recovering
18:23recovering her truck it's been mint i loved it great job
18:26great job

19:02well i didn't expect this to be happening today
19:05i've got a guy marching washing my truck for me like
19:06yeah
19:10generally what a bloat
19:11you wouldn't normally get guy don't see himself as a celebrity does he
19:15but end of the day he is
19:16you wouldn't get any other celebrity
19:19ivy's on hands covered in oil
19:20cracking on washing your truck
19:22and doing it right
19:28and after washing comes the refuelling
19:32what eight to the gallon

19:40four and a half to five to the gallon
19:41and your normal car's doing what
19:44thirty or forty to the gallon
19:45yeah

22:23that looks like it's got pickle that more you
22:24yeah that'll do me
22:25hey i'm not a fussy man boy
22:37with the job about one hour away
22:40there's plenty of time for chat
22:42as well as fine dining
22:44and what do these two alpha nights of the road discuss
22:50holidays
22:51yeah we've been
22:52we're not cruisers for the last few years
22:55and that's converted to me that
22:56i wouldn't have thought of a minute
22:58you know being stuck on that boat
22:59i can't knock it till i've tried it
23:01but i'd have said that's not for me
23:02no
23:02for what
23:03yeah
23:03you know because you think i'm stuck on this thing
23:05there's nothing to do
23:06with the same folk
23:06yeah
23:06same folk
23:07yeah but two and a half thousand
23:10staff or something
23:10there are five thousand people on this ship
23:12you don't see the same person twice
23:14in a fortnight
23:15honestly
23:15yeah
23:15honestly
23:16yeah
23:16yeah and i've been to cities
23:18that i wouldn't have thought
23:19are going to
23:20like where
23:21well barcelona
23:23because there's that much to do
23:24and see around barcelona
23:25yeah yeah
23:25i'd never say never then
23:27like my missus ain't a big flyer
23:29yeah but hey
23:29we're eyes and ears open
23:31to different
23:31yeah yeah
23:37yeah
23:37what's he doing here
23:38he just got wrong side
23:40island didn't he
23:40he just got wrong side
23:41island here
23:42yeah
23:43yeah
23:43we're on here somewhere you reckon
23:45yeah we're looking for electric avenue
23:4818 tonne rigid mate
23:50on this lane
23:51ah i can see something down there
23:52with some address flashing
23:53it's normally a good sign
23:55yeah
23:57right so i'll go to that locker
23:58get my eye vis out then
23:59yes mate yeah yeah
24:00yeah
24:01your man look
24:02you've got his thumb up for us
24:04oh man
24:05we've got parked cars behind him mate
24:07so we're going to be going for a front move
24:08yeah
24:09yeah
24:09yeah
24:10yeah
24:12jay's happy for guy to take the lead on this lift and shift
24:17our hero starts his inquiries
24:19how you getting on mate
24:20with the driver of the broken down truck
24:22will she drive mate
24:24sorry
24:25will she move
24:25no she won't mate
24:27what's happened mate
24:28uh coming along here
24:29yeah
24:30got the faults up
24:31come up on the dash
24:32yeah orange lights red lights
24:33uh red lights
24:35lost all drive
24:36did you
24:36literally lost all drive
24:38just glided into here
24:39uh i had a mechanic come out
24:42yeah
24:42had a look at it
24:43for any reason he's got the faults
24:44he got 49 faults up
24:46so yeah
24:47with a few issues then
24:48so uh i think the only thing that's working at the minute
24:50is the tachograph and the radio
24:51okay
24:52now sound job mate
24:53right
24:55we've got a plan
24:56have we
24:56yeah
24:57all right jay
24:57powertrain module issue
24:59sounds like an engine
25:00right
25:01so
25:01yeah that's not roadside repair though
25:03yeah
25:03by the sound of it
25:05he was here for an hour mucking about
25:06come get to the bottom of it
25:07right
25:07so
25:07tower away
25:09it may only be day three
25:11but our guy reckons he's got the hang of this
25:14so tied up to you what you want to do on this
25:15sit there flicker onto your remote
25:17because obviously you want to be down there underneath
25:18see what you're doing now
25:19the golden rule is damage free recovery
25:23now green button power up
25:26so the challenge here
25:27is hitching a real customer's truck up
25:29without accidentally punching a hole through its floor
25:38boom down a bit do you think
25:39boom down mate yeah
25:40are you about level at that
25:43that's it
25:44extend after that
25:49boom up
25:49boom up
25:51nope to catch there is it
25:53that nope
25:53that would be that
25:54are you happy
25:58perfect that
26:00blimey
26:01he's done it
26:03back up over your axle
26:05on the outside of the axle
26:06yeah so you've got the other side of the spring hanger now
26:09haven't you
26:09then you'll have a hook on each side
26:10yeah I have
26:11chaining your right chain gone to your left
26:13that's making
26:14yeah
26:15a little bit more sense now boy
26:17only a little bit now
26:18only a little bit
26:22now Guy has to make the vehicle safe to tow
26:25which is a test for his mechanical instincts
26:27four bolts in it
26:29yeah
26:30ideally then half shaft
26:31I'd pace the half shaft it mate
26:33yeah
26:34removing the half shaft will prevent a lot of damage
26:38taking the half shaft out
26:39when the truck's being towed we want to stop the gearbox from turning
26:42we turn the gearbox without the engine running
26:44the oil pump's not working it'll seize the gearbox
26:50so we catch all this oil in this so we're just making sure from an environmental point of view we're
26:54not causing any problems
26:55I'll put my rag right back and I'll rotate it so you're pushing the rag onto the back
26:59just so you're wiping it
27:01that's it
27:01because then when you pull it out you're not dripping all of it floor
27:04perfect
27:04yeah
27:04perfect
27:05so you've dunked back at shaft now
27:07they'll love this on telly
27:08wipe your shaft guy
27:09nobody likes a dripping shaft
27:11no we do not man
27:12no we do not
27:15there's only one set of splines on this
27:17yeah
27:17yeah
27:19sling them bolts in there
27:20put them in there look
27:21keep them up everything all neat and tidy together
27:24with it
27:25one obviously we don't want to be putting them in a customer's vehicle
27:28dirty bolts and that
27:29no we don't
27:30but you know what diff oil could smell like
27:31to be honest
27:33I quite like a bit of EP90
27:35yeah yeah
27:36the half shaft gets stored in a special hidey hole
27:39mate that's tidy that
27:41and then the pavement gets a spring clean
27:45bit of brake cleaner look
27:46mate mate mate
27:47you know just where we made a bit of a mess
27:48mate you know the score
27:51there's one last check to make sure Guy is properly on the ball
27:56you chained on
27:57you got your ear in
27:58yeah
27:59shaft's out
28:01we just need one more thing doing
28:02back lights
28:03back lights on mate yeah
28:04and he nails it
28:07no can't come off
28:09all that remains is to say goodbye to a grateful driver
28:14exactly that
28:15exactly that mate
28:16yeah
28:17nice to meet you
28:18if I'd known he was coming over to watch the lorry
28:22in this world our guy is bigger than Beyonce
28:26which does hold the job up a bit
28:28are you all good?
28:29yeah
28:29you killed it
28:31good lad
28:32nice one mate
28:33thank you
28:34see you later mate
28:35cheers mate
28:36good job Jay always keeps his mind on the job
28:39I've just realised Guy
28:40before we've set off mate
28:41we've got 7.5 tonne weight limit straight in front
28:43here it is yeah
28:44dead end street 7.5 tonne weight limit
28:46so we're gonna have to turn this around here before we carry on
28:56no
28:56no listen easy
28:57I'll get on his
28:58I'll get on his side
29:26I'll get on his side
29:27hey hey
29:28good work
29:28thank you
29:33didn't take long did it?
29:35no
29:35no
29:36the recovery is a success
29:38but the job's not over
29:40when you're driving a load this big and cumbersome
29:43you can't switch off for a second
29:45on the way in
29:46we had a 15 foot bridge didn't we?
29:48yes we did
29:49yes we did
29:49so it was no good then turning this around
29:51and it being 16 foot
29:5216 foot tall
29:54jeez
29:54so you've had to take that into account
29:55so when I was in earlier yeah
29:56to check the handbrake
29:57I had a quick clock at the height marker in it you see
30:00yeah yeah
30:01what you've got to take into account is
30:03it's marked up at 14 foot 3
30:05plus what you've lifted it
30:05plus what we've lifted it yes
30:07I know for a fact
30:0815 foot tier we're absolutely fine
30:10go on do you want me to watch here?
30:11are you happy?
30:12no stress
30:13no stress
30:13right
30:14ok
30:15I'm worth 15 pounds
30:16ok
30:17I like your confidence
30:18you watch your mirrors here look
30:19watching your mirrors
30:20I like your confidence
30:21yeah
30:22you look how much you've got there
30:28oh
30:28yeah you swing a cat in there
30:30plenty
30:30yeah hey boy
30:32that's the experience innit
30:33fair play to you
30:36out on the open road
30:38there's chance to evaluate how well the job went
30:40and in particular
30:41acknowledge Guy's customer service skills
30:46approaching the driver and talking to him like he did
30:49well from my eyes I think he's paramount
30:51yeah he'd been sat there six hours
30:52no wonder he was pleased that we got there
30:54we get people that haven't been in that situation scenario before
30:59so they are slightly worried
31:02they're panicking
31:02they're out of the elements
31:04they don't know what's happening
31:05so
31:05you have to almost comfort them a bit in that
31:08we're doing this on a daily basis
31:09it's the norm to us
31:11Joe Publick's side of the road has broke down
31:13potentially the first time they've ever been in that scenario
31:16yeah
31:16you're making their terrible day
31:18it's that little bit more bearable for them
31:20you are yeah yeah yeah
31:21just by just putting the mine at rest
31:23yeah we do we do get a bit of a buzz when you effectively
31:26a bit of job satisfaction
31:27yeah yeah yeah
31:28well hey boy that's worth a lot
31:28yeah that's worth a lot
31:37the lads reach the repair yard and get ready to unload
31:41just obviously yeah just be careful
31:43obviously we're on a live industrial estate
31:45so
31:48you alright?
31:49yeah
31:52no mess in here man
31:53spot on that
31:54spot on
31:55so I had no input in dropping that off
31:57it done it by his own accord
31:58yeah there were no jerky movements with it or anything
32:01lowered it down nice
32:02plenty of clearance underneath the vehicle
32:04so spot on that
32:06alright to fold up?
32:07fold her up mate yeah
32:11that spot on that mate
32:13yeah job done
32:14job done
32:14erm
32:15I'm learning
32:17I'm slowly getting there
32:18but having a word with the lads in there
32:20I said go on it's got this fault
32:21what do you think that'll be?
32:21he said that could be a solenoid inside the box
32:23or it could be a wheel speed sensor
32:24I'd just be interested to see what that was
32:26just talking to the apprentice there
32:27just started
32:28he didn't have a clue
32:28but he's into it
32:29he's only been here a few months
32:32it's been another job well done
32:34and our guy is fitting into this world rather well
32:38I can't fault the chap
32:40literally yeah
32:40if I'd say if we was doing it at
32:42out of a ten
32:43it'd be way up
32:44probably eight out of ten
32:45it's called
32:46it's called Amish Collective
32:47which is what you want
32:48you don't want anybody that's flapping on a job like this
32:51exactly mate
32:52I'll go put them back
32:52thank you
32:53thank you
32:53once they've tied it up
32:55Guy and Jay seize the opportunity for a lunch break
32:58and manage to get a table for two
33:01on the back of a skiplory
33:05that's the sort of normal thing innit
33:07office jobs
33:08one hour dinner breaks
33:10yeah
33:12that's not the norm in this job is it
33:14not the norm at all mate
33:15no definitely
33:15we don't get an hour dinner break now
33:17definitely not
33:17we'll have breaks to keep us legal
33:19yeah
33:20but
33:20as you can well imagine with the industry that we're in
33:22we
33:23we are
33:24on it
33:25as such
33:26if we get the police ringing us up
33:28the road's closed
33:30we've got to open this road as quick as possible
33:32we're not going to tell them
33:33we'll be with you in 45 minutes
33:35we're just having a dinner break
33:36it ain't going to wash is it
33:37no
33:40waiting for the phone to go then
33:41yes
33:43yeah
33:45right
33:45yeah
33:59Guy's final day as a recovery operator
34:01will see him tested with the job's biggest challenge
34:05a truck rollover
34:08the goal was
34:10at the start of the recovery job was
34:12can I man a juicy scenario
34:15right
34:15can I control that situation
34:17well what we're going to do
34:18we're going to make our own
34:19juicy situation
34:20we're going to roll the truck over
34:22and can I write it
34:24I think I've got the general gist of what needs to happen
34:26hopefully
34:31there's 101 things that could go wrong
34:34it could fall over on someone
34:36crush a load of puppies
34:38there's just that there's loads of things could happen
34:40loads of things could happen
34:41but we try not to think about those
34:44the power of positive non-thinking
34:48it's as complex as recovery gets
34:51involving two of the company's biggest cranes
34:53and lifting specialists
34:55Steve and Pat
34:58Guy will have to use all the knowledge he's learnt this week
35:01and a bit more
35:03this is what we get up for
35:04on here
35:05yeah
35:05something to go and get your teeth stuck into like
35:09but first
35:10they have to make the truck have an accident
35:13and they've got just the man for the job
35:15go on give it a bit
35:16keep it going
35:18keep it going
35:19keep it going
35:19alright
35:20send it
35:27just like that
35:28that
35:29just like that
35:34I think we've achieved putting it on its side
35:37Steve is an instructor with the Institute of Vehicle Recovery
35:41and gives Guy a crash course in the physics behind this rescue
35:45yeah
35:45and we're saying it's what
35:4720...
35:47we're saying it's 20 tonne
35:48let's just use 20 tonne as a figure
35:50yeah
35:51sometimes I think people think we just turn up
35:53we just attach a winch to it and pull
35:55and just hope for the best
35:57work out where the centre of gravity would be
36:01multiply it by the distance of your pivot point
36:03which is the bottom of your wheels
36:03yeah
36:05the reality is quite often there's a lot of
36:07sort of physics involved in trying to use things
36:09to get the best mechanical advantage
36:11and make the job a lot easier for yourself
36:13and we're going to run out of panels on that trailer
36:14yeah
36:15I've tried
36:15I've tried right here
36:17and I've cocked it up a couple of times
36:18but I think now you've explained it
36:19I've sort of got the general gist
36:25the team start rigging for the lift
36:27by jacking the trailer up on airbags
36:29so it's easier to pull the winch cables underneath
36:35yeah
36:36same light
36:38Guy ties them securely around the axles
36:40hopefully
36:41while the cranes are manoeuvring into position
36:51a set of winch controls are handed over to the newbie
36:56sound job
36:58but we've not told him this
36:59but there's nearly one and a half million pounds worth of kit
37:02that he's operating there
37:03so
37:04yeah there's a lot of pressure on his shoulders
37:05not to mess this up
37:07go on
37:08what's the score
37:09you've just got to look what you're doing all the time
37:11yeah
37:11yeah like
37:12don't push a lever
37:14unless you can see what it's going to do
37:15yeah
37:15that's it really
37:16yeah
37:17and then you can't f*** up
37:19yeah
37:19come on
37:22more inflatables support the trailer as it's lifted
37:24while on the other side crash bags will cushion the fall
37:28but it's a windy day
37:29so they need to be held in place by hand
37:33more pressure for Guy
37:35if I didn't trust him I wouldn't have had him on it
37:37you kind of have to have two guys in
37:39in the danger zone if you like
37:41so
37:41if you don't trust the people that controls the other side
37:44then
37:45it's no good
37:49time to winch
37:51if you winch up now
37:52yeah
37:56Pat's controlling the crane on the left
37:59and Guy's controlling the crane on the right
38:03oh yeah it's a bit quicker at that innit
38:05the need to lift perfectly in sync
38:09right hold it there
38:10I'll catch up here
38:15yeah
38:151.6 tonne
38:171.7 tonne
38:191.8 tonne
38:20in with the blue a bit
38:21learning on the job
38:24yeah you're right
38:25you're right
38:25so you reckon that's on the point of going
38:271.6 tonne
38:28yeah yeah yeah
38:29we'll just send it
38:37good job
38:38well done mate
38:39you know the score are you
38:42to be fair from what guys
38:43from where we were
38:44at the beginning of the week
38:45to where we are now
38:46our lads wouldn't even be at this stage now
38:51none of these boys
38:52are university graduates
38:56but they can make amazing things happen
38:57just by using common sense
39:00and now they've got a trustworthy extra set of hands
39:03the team decide to ramp things up
39:06by experimenting with a new technique
39:08for the very first time
39:11sometimes on a motorway
39:13they're pushing you and pushing you and pushing you
39:15to keep lanes open and stuff like that
39:17so this sort of
39:18what we want to show is
39:19is possibly
39:20you might be able to do this
39:21in two lanes with a motorway
39:22rather than three
39:26well you've never tried this
39:27no no
39:29by using three wreckers
39:32they think they can right the truck
39:35under control
39:36in mid air
39:39you ready?
39:40yep
39:45a successful lift depends on constant communication
39:48in with the white
