The Yorkshire Vet S22E03 My5 H Episode 3 Engsub
Transcript
00:02Across Yorkshire's Moors and Dales, the world's most famous vets set the benchmark for animal care.
00:09And James Herriot's legacy lives on.
00:14His former trainee, Peter Wright...
00:17All my life, I've enjoyed doing this.
00:19...has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:23There we are. How are you doing, my old mate?
00:26Peter's old partner, Julian Norton...
00:28Not quite the same as operated in theatre, is it? I know.
00:32Now has two practices.
00:34I don't want to let him go.
00:36One of them in the town where Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved.
00:42Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:45And in the foothills of the Pennines...
00:48That's a Hollywood smile.
00:49...a new generation of town and country vets also uphold the Herriot ethos.
00:55I'm just going to have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've got.
00:57The teams are united...
01:00Oh!
01:01...and always determined to hit their target.
01:04Yay!
01:06Yes!
01:07...has there help animals of all shapes...
01:10It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:12...sizes...
01:13Hello, God, yes.
01:27...types...
01:27...very easy.
01:28You've won Mr. Wet t-shirt.
01:30...but they continue the Herriot tradition.
01:33It's alive.
01:34...treating all creatures...
01:35It's moving.
01:36I can't believe it.
01:38...great...
01:40You're all right, little bird.
01:41...and small.
01:42How are we happening?
01:43Yay!
01:55Yorkshire's highways and byways take many forms.
02:00...winding country lanes between dry stone walls...
02:05...those that loyally follow the path of the river...
02:12...or rise suddenly to skies of heather.
02:17Eternal drover's roads.
02:19Tracks dating back centuries.
02:23For descendants of the livestock that first travelled these routes...
02:28...crossings feel safe.
02:30As if this land is somehow theirs by ancient right.
02:36But for many pet owners...
02:38...the dangers of the road are a constant fear.
02:42A fear that's just become reality for Michael...
02:46...who's rushed to the practice in Kirby Moorside...
02:48...with his 14-month-old Springer Spaniel, Brutus.
02:52The car went right over him.
02:54I thought he was brown bread.
02:56But when we looked, he'd done a runner...
02:59...and he was halfway down a grass field.
03:02Which was a bit of a relief.
03:04At least he wasn't dead.
03:08I don't want to lose him.
03:11He's got a cut on one leg.
03:13He is limping a bit.
03:14He was whimpering and yelping a lot...
03:17...coming down in the car.
03:19Although Brutus has survived the accident for now...
03:22...Michael wants Peter to make sure...
03:24...there are no issues that aren't visible.
03:27It's like to come through.
03:30Oh, dear. He's looking a bit sorry for himself.
03:32Isn't he just? He's lucky to be alive, actually.
03:35I think we'll have him up, please.
03:36Why not?
03:39Good boy. You're all right.
03:41Have you had a rotten morning?
03:43That's good.
03:44Nice pink colour, that, yeah.
03:46I'm going to have to check his chest.
03:48See if there's any bleeding into his chest.
03:51Just check your heart rate.
03:54How long ago is it since it happened?
03:57It came straight down?
03:57An hour.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Lungs are clear.
04:01And it's out, it's very steady.
04:03And his pulse is strong.
04:05He's got a gash on his front leg.
04:06Yeah.
04:07It's just how I feel down those ribs.
04:10I think he's been remarkably looking...
04:13It's a miracle, isn't it?
04:13It is a miracle.
04:14Yeah, it is.
04:14And the other thing, of course, is the bladder.
04:17You know, is his bladder intact and this sort of thing?
04:19Yeah.
04:20There's some swelling in his abdominal muscles there.
04:23And I think it looks...
04:25It feels to me as if the wheel has gone over this part
04:28rather than his chest.
04:29Right.
04:30I really did think he was a goner.
04:32Yeah, he's a fairly laid-back character, aren't you, beauties?
04:35Do you want me to leave it?
04:37Yeah.
04:37I'll give you a ring.
04:38Are you going to stay with Uncle Peter?
04:40And we'll get you sorted out.
04:41What?
04:42You doing something too?
04:44Hmm?
04:44Good boy.
04:46Good boy.
04:48Peter knows he has to get to the bottom of things quickly.
04:51Good boy.
04:53He's a brave lad.
04:54And Nurse Chloe has come straight over to help.
04:57Good boy.
04:59Well done, Brutus.
05:01What do you want to do first?
05:02Do you want to ultrasound scan him?
05:03I'll ultrasound him first.
05:04Yeah.
05:05What I'm going to do is scan his abdomen
05:07and make sure everything's as it should be in there.
05:11I'm not certain about his bladder,
05:13so that's something I need to check.
05:15Right.
05:16Let's have a look.
05:18OK, Chloe?
05:19Yeah, absolutely fine.
05:21It's nice and steady now.
05:23Good.
05:26Nice definition of intestines there.
05:30They're very clear.
05:31If you get blood in there,
05:33then they wouldn't show as clearly as that.
05:36That liver's looking pretty healthy.
05:39Nice edge to it there.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Looking quite healthy.
05:44Just going to check his bladder now.
05:49There we are.
05:51There's his bladder.
05:56There's no proper catheter in,
05:57and just check that he hasn't got blood in his bladder.
06:02It could signify that he's got kidney damage.
06:06It could mean that his bladder's traumatised and bled.
06:12There he is.
06:14There it could be.
06:20While Brutus ran into trouble on the road with a car,
06:25it was an off-road mountain bike accident
06:29that left Julian needing medical attention not too long ago.
06:34look that's my knee and it seems he might not have learned his lesson crashed into a tree yesterday
06:43to the frustration of nurse lucy i thought you were taking it easy well i was but i was going
06:49quite fast and it was nice and good crashing into a tree and i was going a bit too i
06:54was going a bit
06:55too fast it was a narrow track at the bottom with trees on either side that were encroaching on the
07:00path and i could squeeze i did squeeze through but i wobbled a bit if you have to go back
07:04to your
07:05surgeon and tell him that you've done your legging again for the same thing he's not going to be very
07:10happy is he no he won't be very happy but it did say i was capable of doing pretty much
07:15most things
07:16we're not crashing into trees but they're only little trees they're more like saplings and trees
07:23crushed into a bush i went a bit mad when i got home and i was right into the tree
07:33where new life is expected on a farm there are often bumps in the road
07:41and the journey can be even more tense with rare breeds
07:46in huddersfield shona's had a call about a pregnant pedigree heifer we're going to go and
07:53see jess with one of her white park cows it's a first-time carver quite an experienced farmer she
07:59knows what she's doing she's carved quite a few cows so just trying to get there as quickly as
08:03possible because things aren't progressing as they normally would she's called tilly
08:10i've had since birth so she's um just coming up three although tilly isn't white she is a pedigree
08:18white park there are only 750 breeding females in the world so every carp is special and precious
08:34good girl okay right she's quite slack enough she's very slack and then she started pushing
08:41at about nine o'clock last night okay but it didn't progress any further okay and now since i've been
08:48down since six ish she hasn't pushed at all right okay come on tilly good girl
08:57so i haven't touched her at all whoa don't be kicking
09:03she's turning properly like she was going to cut she was down on her side pushing about every five
09:10minutes okay um and it's just not progressed from there
09:18good girl so there was just a little bit of like a band on the cervix when i went in
09:24but there is a little bit of room now there's a foot there
09:31there's a nose there their waters haven't broken there's been nothing like that
09:40good girlie you just have to have a feel without a glove because i can't feel what
09:43isn't going on there so i'm just trying to establish whether she's in labor and it's twisted
09:51or whether she's not actually gone into labor yet she's been pushing but not any really back arching
09:58tail up pushing because that's why i've left it but it's you know nine hours is too long to be
10:06pushing the cervix isn't open i'm just trying to establish whether i think there's a bit of a twist
10:10there is a bit of twist actually i think right is it alive
10:17it's not moved yet
10:21coming up right has the car caused brutus serious injury
10:28these wounds can be absolutely lethal the position of it does worry me julian doesn't know what's hit
10:34rodney's lamb it's in our place for an injury like that isn't it yes and a giant tortoise the hail
10:40from the land of the sahara it's a bit different to huddersfield gives matt a big shock wow
10:54at the practice in kirby moorside peter and chloe are examining young springer spaniel brutus
11:02right who's been hit by a car oh yes that's exactly what we wanted isn't it yeah
11:12got urine there which means his bladder's intact
11:15overtly there's no evidence of blood there so that's a major concern we can uh rule out we can
11:21tick off so that's good right i'm just gonna flick the light up we're just going to x-rays left
11:27fall because this is the one that he was particularly concerned about there you are good boy
11:35that's the noise we wanted
11:39that shoulder joint's looking good so i think we've mainly just got soft tissue damage here
11:44certainly everything is in place so i think brutus has been a very lucky boy
11:51brutus may have been lucky so far right shall we take him but he's not out of the woods
11:56just yet these wounds such as these appear quite small they can be absolutely lethal sometimes
12:05that could potentially cause a very nasty septic arthritis so we're going to flush that out now
12:12and clean it up it looks pretty insignificant but the position of it does worry me
12:19i'm just put an odd stitch in there
12:22i'm going to have to move pretty quickly brutus is now uh coming around from his slumber
12:28good lad
12:30good lad
12:33just freshening the edges of the wound to get a nice uh a nice healing process
12:39great that looks better that's better indeed
12:43brutus has got away incredibly lightly if he was a cat you'd say he was a part of his nine
12:48lives
12:50good right after a traumatic day and initially fearing the worst michael's back with his wife
12:58shirley look who's here look who's come for you hey
13:05his chest is and heart are absolutely fine and uh i know we've said it but how lucky has he
13:10been
13:10i thought i'd be digging a hole i really did yes yeah so i want him on some antibiotics and
13:15here's
13:15some good old painkillers thanks ever so much any problems give us a shout we will and uh all the
13:21best
13:21thank you bye-bye in yet phenomenal relief really but they're good vets here i mean they're just
13:32spot on phenomenal result yeah and he might have learned a lesson as well
13:48i'm feeling the walls of the vagina shona's trying to establish if jesse's pedigree heifer tilly
13:54is in labor the main thing we need to decide is whether we're going to do a cesarean or not
13:59isn't
13:59it yeah and if tilly's unborn calf is in danger she is quite swollen in there like she's quite fluidy
14:06yeah so and she's not due till next saturday yeah and but she is she is slackened off and
14:14everything so it's weird that she was straining that's my only issue sweating
14:21temperature's all right it's very slightly up but she's a little bit stressed isn't she
14:24oh golly i can feel the end of the cervix and that's completely shut there's no twist yeah i'm
14:31just concerned that she's been migged out down there she was sitting most of yesterday yeah do
14:38you want to see her walking yeah yeah right tilly come up here and show everybody how you can walk
14:43come on then we're going on let's go walk oh you're suppley aren't you
14:49so i definitely wouldn't do a cesarean at this point and she's definitely not actively carving at this
14:55point she's lifting her tail she's definitely not far off is she by the looks of her i'll tell you
15:01what i could do actually is rectally feel it and make sure it feels all right rectally because when
15:05i first put my hand in and i said i can feel it's hair i was feeling it through the
15:08vaginal walls
15:12oh golly because the cervix isn't open i can't feel right into where the calf is i can't feel into
15:19the uterus so what i'm doing is going rectally and then i can feel the uterus below me and so
15:25i'm
15:25feeling if anything feels abnormal so there should be quite a bit of fluid around the calf which there
15:30is there's definitely a head there it doesn't feel massive so maybe there's two yeah her grandmother
15:38is in the end bay over there she had twins so millie and molly were her twins and then millie
15:46had tillie
15:48steady there have already been some new arrivals here recently this is bonnie and this is bonnie's
15:55baby bonnie's baby with jess doing her bit for the future of this historic breed there's only 750
16:04breeding females in the world and supposedly the first british breed of cattle that is really cute
16:11james the first went hunting in lancashire and he shot a white park with his bow and arrow and
16:20apparently he got fed it that night and he enjoyed it so much he knighted it sir that's why we
16:26get the
16:26name so long isn't it yeah they're so pretty can you come okay everything seems okay i know that
16:35chili's in very good hands with jess so she will keep a very close eye on her she'll let me
16:39know if
16:39anything's going on i do think there's twins in there so that'll be exciting to see and hopefully
16:44they don't get too tangled up and just come out nicely one after the other but obviously i'm i'm here
16:49i'm on hand if jess needs any help carving them across yorkshire julian's been on hand for his next
17:04client for many years today i'm heading to see an old friend of mine a farmer called rodney who's got
17:12a problem with one of his young sheep you're ready for your tea rodney's sheep are his pride and joy
17:20they're all comical and they're all different characters and they're all part of family
17:28and it's one of the newest family members two-month-old anna who's causing concern
17:35one of her eyes just ain't right she's got like a little mark or
17:39something and she was holding her head to one side so i thought we'd better be letting him have
17:45a look and see what he thinks julian come in to look at you make you better hi julian all
17:53right
17:54so how's this lamb then but poorly high do you think yeah so what did it look like to start
17:59with
17:59it just looked a bit foggy to start with what's the other one like normal this is a cataract the
18:08white
18:08bit there that silvery bit is actually the lens yeah so the lens obviously should be totally see-through
18:14in this lamb it's gone all smoky so that'll probably be why his head was lopsided because
18:20he was trying he wouldn't be able to see through it so it's very unusual in a sheep sometimes see
18:26them in
18:26calves and sometimes in alpacas i don't think i've ever seen her in a sheep before
18:32basically there's nothing that we can really do about it she'll cope sheep are good at bidding a
18:38flock because they they get security from the rest of the flock so you'll find that she'll probably
18:44always want to be near other sheep when she gets older while julian knows anna will be okay
18:50a vet on a busy farm like rodney's so it's a bit of a way to journey then maybe i
18:55feel a bit like
18:56i've never took to look at in his knee he's familiar with the phrase while you're here
19:02so what's wrong with this one then he's got a rump on his knee so i thought you could have
19:07a look while
19:14he was a bit odd doesn't he yeah could he have been knocked by somebody or yeah because they're
19:22always faking like you know it's just an odd place for an injury like that isn't it yeah
19:26oh he bends it all right yeah i'm gonna do with that i wonder what do you think it's just
19:38a knock
19:38i don't know what that is
19:49at the animal hospital in haversfield
19:52in regarding which you have to molly jake has arrived from the local zoo with bernie
19:58to see matt bernie is a sulcata tortoise now these sulcata tortoises can be massive we're concerned
20:06that bernie has got some eggs that are being passed and retained eggs can be really problematic
20:13morning jake all right this is bernie hey come on through let's see what we can do
20:21has she had eggs before jake yes yeah then it's never been a problem no no so what's the story
20:28so usually she's annoying keepers when we're cleaning her so i'm moving about the whole
20:32enclosure but she's sticking to one spot the whole day and not moving at all and how long
20:37has she been there doing this far a few weeks now right okay what i'll do is i'll borrow her
20:43get
20:44an x-rayed see what's going on there get a blood sample as well check calcium levels send them off
20:48all
20:48right yeah come on you
20:56so we're 12.3 kg i think hopefully let's see is the balloon x-ray machine going to be big
21:04enough
21:04and after tonight we might have to do this in two parts nurse becky is helping matt oh no she'll
21:09be
21:10all right and while bernie's not her first tortoise she feels a little in the dark
21:16i've done a couple with matt uh none this size though so it's a first for me she's beautiful
21:23the egyptian sulcata tortoises so they hail from the land of the sahara it's a bit different to
21:28Huddersfield all right there we go
21:35ready
21:39right moment of truth
21:45wow it's a lot of eggs no wonder she's shuffling around like she needs to lay
21:51we've got one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eggs knocking around in there
21:58so bernie is pregnant with ten eggs oh she's a big girl those eggs have clearly got a shell and
22:06they're ready to be laid and because she's not getting on with the job if they were to stay in
22:12there they can cause problems infections worst case scenario is they would have to surgically remove
22:18those eggs which would mean sawing into that shell which is by no means a simple undertaking
22:27coming up
22:30is the spaniel hit by a car on the road to recovery i was quite concerned that he might have
22:36abdominal damage that some of his body organs may have been squashed and julian's going off-road
22:43we go up up up and then down down down and that's the best bit for a fearsome mountain bike
22:49challenge
22:50this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity and carries risks personal injury death etc etc can
22:55i cross that bit out
23:05in west yorkshire at rodney's sheep farm
23:09i mean ain't limping her eye no after being called out to look at anna the lamb's cloudy eye
23:16so i don't think it's a joint infection or a joint swelling as such julian's now examining a
23:23mysterious lump on tywin the top's knee instinctively as vets if there's something that we don't know
23:30what it is what we like to do is stick a needle in and see what comes out of it
23:34go on then it could be
23:37an abscess it has that feel it's sort of slightly soft and squidgy i think we'll do that
23:45so this part of the leg is the same as our wrists so it could have been a bang from
23:50another
23:50sheep because it's on the outside but it could be full of pus which is why i'm going to stick
23:55a needle in
23:56it won't hurt this this goes in and then hopefully something comes out oh look
24:05it's like treacle having just said it's probably not connected with the joint it might be connected
24:10with the joint because that does look fluidy like it could be a joint fluid but it's it's quite gloopy
24:19i think this is bursitis so this is a bit like a condition that people get called housemaid knee
24:27come on i'll take it out now so look i'm going to take it out and put your foot down
24:34so that should have relieved the pressure quite a lot
24:37it looks different altogether looks like normal now yeah can let him go now if you want actually
24:42um we don't need to do anything else so a bursa is like a mini cushion underneath a tendon
24:48and it makes it run smoothly and if that gets banged or knocked it swells up and it becomes like
24:55that swollen sometimes quite painful and that now it's drained should go a long way to stop it not
25:02come yeah coming back i've not seen a housemaid's knee in a sheep before good right all right we're done
25:10a few weeks later now then want some tea it's feeding time for anna whose eye problem julian
25:18diagnosed as a cataract anna's doing very well she's still sticking with her mama with all the
25:23sheep to just show her how to go on so they can adapt it's like what else person that loses
25:29sight
25:29of the lie or something like that it's life we've just got to get on with and tywin's knee is
25:35looking
25:35good so today with the help of his son matthew oh boy rodney needs to get tywin's feet in good
25:42shape to help ensure a productive lambing season
25:49oh boy if they don't have the feet right when it comes to tripping time they uh they can't do
25:55the job
25:55properly basically because they can't put all the weight on the back feet so it's uh critical
26:02it's all right secret is really not taking too much off because if you go too far you can easily
26:08easily cut them with everything's beauty treatment
26:13i know it ain't nice being upside down that's it yep he's happy i think
26:20all right all right tom good boy
26:26they hate being in turnover crate because they know if they're going in there they're having
26:29something done with them so they're quick to get back home a bit of food and they'll follow you anyway
26:35and with the job done come on then rodney can enjoy his favorite afternoon pastime
26:42i like to watch them at front of house you can see what's happening and how they're growing and
26:47uh what they're doing it helps you relax and all and you can see potential in them and uh if
26:54you're
26:54feeding them right or if they need help
27:03at the animal hospital in huddersfield giant tortoise bernie seems to be running short on patients
27:11she's hitting at me i think she's a little bit irritated but uh i would be if i was pregnant
27:15so
27:17becky and matt have just discovered 10 eggs stuck inside her you've just got to be careful i don't
27:24want to have to sedate to get a blood sample but if she'll let me just hold her head push
27:28those two
27:29legs in that might keep her head out very strong that's it all right can you push those two legs
27:33in i'm trying that don't worry if you can't that is fine i'll just give her a tickle lovely come
27:40on
27:40missus try that there we go oh perfect get some blood straight shot right well
27:47done that's just going to check on her red blood cells white blood cells calcium levels because
27:51at the end of the day she has passed eggs before and for her to not be passing them is
27:56slightly
27:56unusual so i want to make sure there's no underlying condition that could be causing this
28:00and really it should hopefully give us some answers as to why we're having trouble this time
28:05some hormone injections will just help get those eggs moving and will give us some supplemental
28:10calcium as well to help there you go there's that calcium in there job's a good one last but not
28:16least hormone injection just going to put that right into this muscle here well then many right
28:22bubble back in the box lovely all being well those injections should help her to pass those eggs
28:29and hopefully within the next day or so she'll pass them right jake so yes she's got eggs she's got
28:3710 to be specific if not then we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it because
28:43at the
28:43end of the day if eggs don't get passed then you've got no choice but to work going surgically and
28:48trying
28:48to move them which is no mean feat to tartais in kirby moorside shirley has brought her young springer
29:03spaniel brutus back to the practice with peter hoping he'll prove that little miracles can happen
29:11my next patient is a chap i saw and he'd just been run over by a car and the owner
29:16saw the wheel actually
29:17go over his body and i was quite concerned that he might have abdominal damage that some of his body
29:24organs may have been squashed and even though it was quite bright then the effect of that may be
29:31apparent afterwards mr mccann so i'm just checking up on him today to see how he's going on morning
29:40morning brutus how are you hey you look okay to me have you been all right what have you to
29:49tell me
29:50is he eating okay yes his abdominal muscles were quite uh tense last week and bruised see there's
29:58nothing there now you're very nonchalant about it aren't you brutus having sniffing a sniff around while
30:03i'm examining you hey let's have a look you've been a very good boy haven't you yeah well i can't
30:13find
30:13anything wrong with him and uh he's been a very lucky boy well bear yourself brufus and keep away from
30:22those nasty cars won't you we're doing our best thank you very much well it's a pleasure an absolute
30:28pleasure bye thank you brutus thank you for coming to see me he's gone i'm so pleased that he's recovered
30:38to such an extent i would say it's back to normal so i hope when brutus is out in traffic
30:44again he does
30:46consider what needs to be done in other words look right left and right again before proceeding
30:52and then brutus will live happily ever after with brutus back out enjoying exercise well away from
31:02busy roads shirley's husband michael still can't believe their luck brutus go go it was devastating to
31:13see him run over i was only maybe 10 meters away i mean just unbelievable i mean he thinks everything
31:21is
31:21his friend but he's obviously learning now he's what 18 months old so he's learned a lesson brutus
31:29he's my shadow now whatever i'm doing
31:34oh brutus how much do we love you boy
31:45the yorkshire dales is the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful break
31:50but undeterred by his recent biking accidents julian's come for a not so relaxing weekend
31:57i've just arrived at the campsite in swaledale i'm very excited because tomorrow i'll be doing
32:04mountain bike racing in one of the most beautiful parts of yorkshire the closer i've got to the campsite
32:09the more and more excited i've been getting
32:12a trip away like this the examiner really starts when i press my pop-up roof button and the roof
32:17goes up and that's when i know that i'm really in full camping mode
32:23so that is where we're all going to be tomorrow
32:26we go up up up and then down down down and that's the best bit and then we're happy
32:34burgers it is today for tea oh yum look at that
32:42i just know how much fun that's going to be tomorrow when i'm whizzing down at high
32:46speed and doing jumps i'm just totally excited about it
32:55it's going to be a long day in the saddle and i need to get my beauty sleep i think
33:00tonight so
33:00i'm gonna turn in early
33:10the ard rock festival remember no mics allowed in the registration tent is the uk's biggest mountain
33:17bike event with thousands of riders competing across the intimidating slopes of swaledale
33:23this is the registration process and this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity and carries
33:29risks personal injury death etc etc so i've signed that so can i cross that bit out because
33:36although he likes to seem relaxed julian's more aware of the risks than ever after his serious knee
33:43injury i'm uh slightly nervous mountain biking at this level is always quite dangerous there's
33:51there's challenges ahead uh for sure t minus one minute for the first riders julian's competing in
33:58the over 50s veterans group aptly known as the grand vet category seven stages 40 kilometers of glorious
34:06yorkshire dale's countryside await you this is when the adrenaline starts to starts to flow okay so
34:14ladies and gentlemen good luck you may go enjoy
34:22this course is right up in the high parts of swale there it's pretty rocky so try not to fall
34:28off
34:28that'll be my main challenge still to come hello she's finally done it fresh concerns over a rare breed calf
34:39i don't know whether you want to check the calf because she's bitten the navel off right at the top
34:44let's have a look at your navel then and during julian's epic bike challenge
34:48a frightening deja vu you okay near huntersfield lyric what are you up to jess recently called shona
35:06when she mistakenly thought her rare breed heifer tilly was in labor i was very concerned the white parks
35:14are they're actually rarer than pandas and her line has a reputation for twins so i thought because
35:20of the twins they may be tangled up together or the calf might be dead now thankfully one healthy little
35:30girl has been born very pleased that she came out quickly that she was a heifer and that actually
35:37pleased that she was a single calf so i'm pleased that we can continue that genetic line
35:43but jess still has some concerns so she's asked shona to come back
35:50what i'd wanted shona to do is um because she thought that she'd felt this sort of second head
35:55or some lump behind the calf just to make sure that there isn't a dead calf inside her and to
36:02make
36:02sure that she's returning to normal um she's healthy good morning jess hello shona has she finally done it
36:10you'll be pleased to see oh look at that she's a heifer oh fantastic and she was done in 15
36:17minutes
36:17because she came so quickly i thought oh there might be another one coming but then she just settled down
36:22good girlie good tilly good last tilly yeah that's fine cervix is closing nicely yeah so i was definitely
36:33wrong about the second calf but that's a good thing but i don't know whether you want to check the
36:38calf
36:39because she's bitten the navel off right at the top so have a look at your navel then
36:45you can feel the cord coming through can't feel any hernias or anything that's a problem
36:51cord's intact she's just bitten it off nice and neat hasn't she your mum
36:54ain't she i do like these calves they're so pretty with their eyeliner
37:03so have you thought of a name yet um well tilly was named after matilda the naughty school girl
37:09because she was the naughtiest little calf i knew weren't you wasn't the nice teacher called miss
37:16honey oh nice yeah yeah honey do you want to be called the matilda theme she just looked at you
37:23then
37:26i'm really pleased every calf is important and every heifer calf is extra important
37:34it's really good to see another heifer calf in the breed and hopefully in a couple of years time
37:38honey it'll be getting on with having some calves of her own as well and carrying on the breed
37:50a few miles away matt's come to the zoo after treating bernie the giant tortoise
37:56who had 10 eggs stuck inside her
38:01you all right jake yeah how's things how are you not too bad not too bad how are we doing
38:07she's passed all her eggs oh fantastic she actually did it on the way home and
38:11in the drive from the vets back of my car she ended up laying the last one excellent but we've
38:17been putting her in the field to sort of give her a bit of tlc a bit more grass to
38:20build her back
38:21up and she's thriving she's trying to escape trying to get the weeds on the outside of the enclosure
38:29um she's eating the grass as we speak oh brilliant let's go say hello
38:36it's like she recognizes me relax hey it's all right she recognizes straight off the bat she took
38:44herself right in hey it's all right don't look so concerned hey ah she looks well she looks really
38:52bright in the eyes doesn't she she looks happy you enjoying yourself that's what we like to see
38:59the improvements almost instantly she's a lot happier she moves about a lot more and
39:03she's just like all burning you know fantastic looks like she's off she's had enough of us jake
39:09i don't blame them no
39:21back in peaceful swaledale
39:27julian's competing in one of the uk's toughest mountain bike events
39:32not long after suffering a serious injury when he came off his bike
39:39this event is basically a continuous ride there's no stopping there's no waiting it's just a whole day
39:44of non-stop riding but riding in tandem he does have some support
39:53so i'm doing this with my friend james we go riding every tuesday
39:58this has gone out isn't it james yes excellent so we've done one of the stages out of seven
40:03you think it's going to be easy because it's downhill but
40:06your legs are stinging by the time we get to the bottom
40:16every yorkshire vet needs to take time to relax julian's relaxation is just more high octane than most
40:25this is exactly my idea of a perfect day when i'm not at work this is where i like to
40:29be you know
40:30thinking about any stresses or pressures or anything like that you're just concentrating on going as
40:34fast as you can and not falling off
40:43you okay
40:58it's not far until the pit stop where julian can assess the damage
41:03and refuel can we help us out yeah yeah just take as many as you want thank you
41:08quite hard fell off and hung my elbow it's not too bad it's just a flesh wound
41:14his bike's chain has been coming off it's been jumping for a while yeah but while he's an expert
41:21at fixing animals for this he needs mechanic amelia if you actually look really closely it says off
41:38it's a major school where i've been driving with my clutch elf apparently
41:43you know what i did last time go on when he didn't feel right i went and bought a new
41:47bike
41:56the hard rock race is a 40 kilometer challenge with over 1500 meters of arduous climbs
42:04and terrifying descents but julian has put past injuries and minor flesh wounds behind him
42:13to reach the finish line
42:21that was absolutely as the name suggests totally epic super day and they're all again
42:30he just needs to find out how he's fared in his appropriately named veterans category
42:36you're second in the grand vets then hey the second in the grand vet category that puts a smile on
42:44my face
42:48the mountain biking community is like no other everybody's so friendly there's camaraderie there's
42:54a bit of competition and it's just a really really good fun environment
43:00it's really tentatively in action that's for sure so i think that's our next stop
43:08so
43:29so
