00:00Ta-da!
00:01Woo!
00:03On today's show...
00:05Cheers!
00:07...bothersome beeping...
00:09What the heck is that?
00:12Is it you?
00:13Perilous Prattling!
00:15You're in a big metal tube of farts in the sky.
00:18There's a mental thing in your head where you say,
00:20right, let me just proofread that before it comes out of my mouth,
00:23and that just didn't happen.
00:25And wonderful warbling!
00:26La-la-la!
00:28La-la-la-la-la!
00:30When I seen the choir outside, it was amazing.
00:33Like, it was such a shock.
00:36As five glorious gastronomes grapple for a grand.
00:39Woo!
00:42I mean, I need that off a flip-flop night, actually.
00:50This week we're in Manchester,
00:53proud holder of the record for the most pan shakes
00:56in 30 seconds.
00:57Whole life's shaking going on!
01:01And hoping to get her pause on this week's prize
01:05is palliative care nurse Pauline.
01:08I'm absolutely bonkers.
01:10There's never a dull moment.
01:11Life's very much in the fast lane.
01:13I'm a bit dangerous, really, when I'm spontaneous.
01:17Because anything could happen.
01:19Better watch out, then.
01:21Why?
01:22This is me.
01:23What you see is what you get.
01:25And what are your guests getting tonight?
01:28My menu tonight is tried and tested.
01:30I've made it several times.
01:32Nothing that's going to hopefully stress me out too much,
01:35because I've done it that many times before.
01:38First up is her starter, stuffed mushrooms.
01:41Stuffed with what?
01:43I mean, it might be nice.
01:45I don't know.
01:46I mean, I like a mushroom.
01:47Let's give it a go.
01:49Careful!
01:50This health and safety nightmare is Richard.
01:53I'd say I'm a bit of a jack of all trades.
01:56Everything from bathroom fitting
01:58to running a retail business of adult merchandise.
02:03Don't worry, mate.
02:03I'll get this sorted for you.
02:05I've got all sorts in here.
02:06I guess people would see me as sort of quite alpha.
02:09I'm always the leader of the pack.
02:11Looking after them, looking after you.
02:14Yes, that's terrifically alpha.
02:16Back in the kitchen, Pauline is prepping her shrooms.
02:19I always give my mushrooms a bit of a rub down.
02:22Once buffed, they're in for a quick fry.
02:26What do you like yours stuffed with?
02:28Never you mind.
02:30She chops onions, mushroom stalks and garlic,
02:33then sizzles along with spinach.
02:37Next, she snips marinated pepper and combines with goat's cheese.
02:41No goats were injured in the making of these mushrooms.
02:44I said, hope not.
02:46In goes some good old cheddar and some lemon juice.
02:49Squeeze a lemon.
02:50Her cheesy mix goes in with the fried veg
02:52and the mushrooms are stuffed and crowned with more cheese.
02:56You're looking quite succulent, actually.
02:59They'll be grilled when her guests arrive.
03:02On to the main.
03:04Boeuf bourguignon.
03:05One of my favourites.
03:06I must admit, I will be quite picky with that.
03:10Our next guest is professional singer Danny.
03:13Danny!
03:14So I perform as a variety of different acts.
03:18I do a tribute to Michael Bublé.
03:20I do an Olly Merge tribute.
03:22I wear that.
03:22I don't really look like either of those two people.
03:24But once I've got my gear on, I've got my tuxedo on.
03:26I just haven't met you yet.
03:30If I came across someone who was larger than life
03:32and very much enjoys being the centre of attention,
03:35I would absolutely just let them run with it.
03:37I love people like that.
03:38You know, life and soul of the party.
03:40Well, look no further than creative whirlwind Vanessa.
03:45I'm a cabaret artiste, a cabaret practitioner.
03:49I perform just basically a one-person brand.
03:53Sounds impressive.
03:55I'm one of those people that will always try
03:57and put a positive perspective on certain situations
04:01and try and find the silver lining.
04:04Just like Pauline, it would appear.
04:06I think it's a win in Maine.
04:07Hopefully people will enjoy it.
04:10Who's getting on with her beauf bourguignon?
04:13It's French.
04:14Gotta have lots of garlic.
04:15Oui bien sûr.
04:17She sautés onion and plenty of garlic
04:20before adding it to the meat.
04:21In we go.
04:22There is a saying that you should never put wine in food
04:25that you're not prepared to drink.
04:26So, I have to taste the wine before it goes in the food.
04:31Sansai.
04:32Very nice.
04:34She sprinkles a stock cube,
04:36squeezes tomato puree,
04:38and shoves on bay leaves and thyme.
04:40It's then in for a bit to infuse...
04:43Beef...
04:44Borgognon.
04:47Borgognon.
04:48Almost.
04:49So, I'm presuming it's beef in a certain way,
04:52like wraps in pastry, I'm going to go for.
04:55You know, like a...
04:57Wellington?
04:58No, it's not.
05:00Last up is dental nurse Amy.
05:04As a dental nurse in my profession,
05:06I'm definitely good at putting people at ease.
05:08OK, we're ready for you now if you want to come through.
05:10First thing in the morning, I'm like,
05:12hi guys, how are you?
05:13Like, morning.
05:15Let's get the day started.
05:16Up a nice and wide for me.
05:19Wider.
05:20Wider.
05:20Yeah.
05:21Oh, I can see your breakfast.
05:23Ta-da!
05:25Woo!
05:27Steady on.
05:30What the heck is that?
05:31What's going on?
05:32Don't know.
05:32Neither do I.
05:35Is it you?
05:36It isn't me.
05:37Are you sure it's not you?
05:39It's definitely not me.
05:41They look like eyeballs, they'll be good at Halloween.
05:43There's suddenly something spooky going on.
05:46Hiya.
05:46There's a screeching noise keeps going off.
05:48I don't know what it is in the kitchen.
05:51PHONE RINGS
05:51Can you hear it?
05:52Yes, we can definitely hear it.
05:54PHONE RINGS
05:56Yeah, there is.
05:58Yeah.
05:58The batteries have gone.
06:00Oh, thank goodness.
06:02Now to finish your main.
06:04Eyeballs, I mean pearl onions, are plopped in.
06:11Mm, magnifique.
06:13Along with mushrooms.
06:15Gotta pop the lid back off.
06:16Ooh, watch out for the chicken.
06:20The bourguignon will slow cook until her guests arrive.
06:26On to dessert.
06:27Red berry cheesecake.
06:29I remember making one when I was about eight years old.
06:33Erm, so, I don't know, desserts can be quite simple, can't they?
06:38Cheesecakes are quite simple to do,
06:40so I'm hoping that there'll be a little bit of razzmatazz
06:44to the red berry.
06:46How about a fancy gadget?
06:49This is Thelma.
06:51And she is a very important part of my kitchen
06:54and she's one of my, well, she is my favourite kitchen appliance.
06:57She is a wonder woman.
06:58She can do anything, even cocktails.
07:00Can she do my tax return?
07:02There's no end to Thelma's talents, no.
07:05Well, I'm sold.
07:06Show us what you got then, Thelma.
07:08In go butter and biscuits.
07:11Then nuts.
07:12It's a bit noisy.
07:14I know, but it's perfect.
07:17The biscuit base is stuffed into glasses.
07:21But there's no rest for Thelma.
07:24Cream cheese, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, salt and eggs are loaded.
07:30For Thelma to work her magic again.
07:35Life before Thelma was very boring.
07:38Yes, all that mixing by hand.
07:40Boring!
07:41The bases are topped with the creamy cheese and they're back in to be steamed.
07:45She really is a talent.
07:46I'm very happy with them.
07:48They'll be topped with homemade raspberry jam before serving tonight.
07:52That's me all done.
07:54Time to put my glad rags on and bring a bit of glamour to the evening.
07:57Off you pop then.
07:59With the prep done, there's just time before the guests arrive.
08:04First up is Jack of all trades Richard.
08:07And they called it...
08:09Hello.
08:10Welcome to my home.
08:11Hi, nice to meet you.
08:12Nice to meet you too.
08:13Can we go for two?
08:14My name's Pauline.
08:15Richard, nice to meet you.
08:16Nice to meet you, Richard.
08:17Let's go through.
08:19I'm a bit of a novice.
08:20I'm used to having it open for me.
08:22Oh, do you know what?
08:22I'll do that for you sweetheart.
08:24Don't worry about that.
08:25Better not waste any though, eh?
08:26Let's not.
08:27There we go.
08:30There you are, Richard, you have that glass.
08:33Cheers.
08:33Cheers.
08:36Second to the door is cabaret artist Vanessa.
08:44Hello.
08:45Welcome to my home.
08:46Oh, Peggy, you look fabulous.
08:48Thank you, Luke.
08:48My name's Pauline.
08:49I'm Vanessa.
08:50Oh, Vanessa, it's lovely to meet you.
08:52Come in.
08:52Let's have a glass of champagne.
08:54Fabulous.
08:55Yes.
08:56Hello.
08:57Hello.
08:58Hello.
08:59Richard, nice to meet you.
09:00I'm a hugger.
09:01And a double kisser.
09:02Oh, good.
09:04Yeah.
09:04It's all about the bubble, darling.
09:06Oh, darling.
09:08Quickie cheers.
09:09Three musketeers.
09:11Cheers.
09:11There's to a good week.
09:13Third to arrive is Michael Bublé.
09:16Or is it Olly Murs?
09:17No, it's Danny.
09:21Hello.
09:23Hello, how are you?
09:24Welcome to my home.
09:25What a lovely dress.
09:26Look at this.
09:28What's your name, darling?
09:29Pauline.
09:30Pauline, my name's Danny.
09:31Nice to meet you, Pauline.
09:32Let me give you that, Pauline.
09:32Oh, thank you.
09:33That's very kind of you.
09:33Let's go through and have a bottle of bubbles.
09:36We'll have a glass.
09:37Who are you?
09:38I'm Vanessa.
09:39My name's Danny.
09:40Lovely to meet you.
09:41Richard.
09:41Nice to meet you.
09:42How are you going?
09:43Richard.
09:44Nice to meet you.
09:44Richard, Danny.
09:45Lovely to meet you, Richard.
09:45Would you like a glass of champagne?
09:46Oh, here we go.
09:48Thank you very much.
09:49We've got one more person to join us.
09:51One more to throw into the mix.
09:54And into the mix she goes.
09:56It's tooth tweaker Amy.
10:02Hello.
10:03Hi.
10:04Nice to meet you.
10:05I'm Pauline, Amy.
10:06Nice to meet you.
10:07Let's come through.
10:08These are for you.
10:08Oh, that's very kind.
10:09Thank you very much.
10:11Hi.
10:12Nice to meet you.
10:13I'm Amy.
10:14My name's Danny.
10:14Lovely to meet you, Amy.
10:15Nice to meet you.
10:16Hey, I'm Vanessa.
10:17You look gorgeous.
10:19Oh, so are you.
10:20Same.
10:21Richard.
10:22All right.
10:23Has everybody got something in their glass?
10:25I think we do.
10:26Oh, yeah.
10:27I just feel so happy that I've actually seen everyone,
10:30how we've got it out the way.
10:32Everyone seems nice.
10:34We'll just see how the week goes,
10:35because things can change.
10:37This is only the first night,
10:37and I suppose you could say
10:38everybody is on their best behaviour.
10:41Possibly.
10:41Here's to a great week.
10:43Lots of laughter, fun,
10:45and hopefully some good food.
10:47Cheers!
10:49Ding dong.
10:51Coming up.
10:51Oh!
10:52Oh!
10:53Forgotten food.
10:54Sir.
10:55I've got wine.
10:56Just some food.
10:57Oh!
10:59She did forget about me.
11:00Well, I'm not wearing any grudges about that.
11:03And naughty nature.
11:04I think we know where you're going from.
11:06I pooped this massive amount right down the side of my other half.
11:10Could have done without it, if I'm honest.
11:19It's night one in Manchester.
11:22Cheers!
11:24Where palliative care nurse Pauline is hoping to win the £1,000 cash prize with her tried and tested menu.
11:30And there's more champagne if you want it, so see you in a little while.
11:34Bye!
11:36While she cracks on, next door Vanessa and Denny are having a nosy.
11:40Taj Mahal.
11:42Oh!
11:42Nice.
11:43They look so sweet.
11:44Look at their happy faces.
11:47So, definitely fans of India.
11:49Well done.
11:50That'll be nice.
11:51Elephant ride.
11:52So cool.
11:53God, I'll be done.
11:54I'd love to ask her a bit more about her travels to India.
11:57And, yeah, she's definitely a free spirit.
12:00You know, with someone like Pauline, you can tell there's a lot of layers to her.
12:04And, like, each layer is just so delightful.
12:07Like, so warm.
12:09But a little bit sassy, a little bit fierce, and a little bit quirky.
12:13All that from a photo.
12:15In the kitchen, Pauline plates up her starter.
12:17Oh, they look lovely.
12:20I'm pleased with these.
12:21They look really good.
12:22Yeah.
12:22Just have to serve them up now.
12:26Look how delicious these look.
12:28I'm really pleased with them.
12:30Let's hope they like them.
12:31First dish of the week.
12:33Stuffed mushrooms.
12:34Oh, yes, please.
12:36Woo!
12:37Bonjour.
12:38Oh, my goodness.
12:39It's me.
12:40Smell?
12:41Oh, yeah.
12:42I love mushrooms.
12:43Did I buy myself something?
12:44Did you have forgotten something?
12:46I'd love something, if that's right, Holly.
12:48Yes!
12:49It'd be absolutely lovely if I could have some food.
12:51Sir?
12:52I've got wine.
12:53Just some food would be nice.
12:55Oh, yes!
12:56Oh, she did forget about me.
12:58Like, I'm not bearing any grudges about that.
13:00Everybody laughed.
13:01I just...
13:01I kind of feel like it set the tone for the evening.
13:03I did wonder if I'd only cooked four, actually.
13:05I was panicking for a minute.
13:07Panic over!
13:08There you go.
13:09Sorry.
13:10Just a slight deviation.
13:11LAUGHTER
13:15This is delicious.
13:16This is really, really scrumptious.
13:17I'm glad you like it.
13:18I make it quite a lot for your family.
13:21This is tried and tested, this, isn't it?
13:22Very tried and tested.
13:23So nice.
13:23OK, the starter was amazing.
13:25When I originally saw the menu, I was like,
13:27OK, stuffed mushrooms, that seems quite simple.
13:30But what she brought out was far from simple.
13:33All I'd noticed is that my mushroom was a lot bigger
13:37than everyone else's.
13:38As I sort of cut into it, I got that sort of black,
13:41mushroomy kind of juice on my plate
13:43and it just kind of made me feel a bit...
13:46I hope you don't mind we had a little bit of a nosy round.
13:49Oh, yeah, we were rummaging.
13:50Can you tell us a little bit more about the photos?
13:53One was obviously to South Mahal.
13:54Was you the one in India as well?
13:55Yeah, in India, yeah.
13:56I've been to India about 13 times.
13:58Wow!
13:59Quite funny, that elephant ride,
14:00cos there was lots of eagles soaring above us.
14:03Just as we got to the part where the photograph was being taken,
14:07an eagle...
14:09..maybe not the thing to talk about over the top.
14:11Here we go.
14:12We know where you're going.
14:13It pooped this massive amount
14:15right down the side of my other half.
14:17And I'm, like, saying,
14:18smile for the photo and he's going,
14:19eagles just...
14:23I thought maybe she'd have left the eagle poo story
14:25until maybe she'd cleared the starters, but it was funny.
14:29Eagle poo at the dinner table.
14:31I mean, er...
14:35Could have done without it, if I'm honest.
14:37Don't worry, Rich.
14:38Talks turn to more mature matters.
14:40I have a huge fear of flying.
14:41Do you?
14:42What is it about the flight?
14:44Is it the take-off?
14:44Is it the landing?
14:45Is it the fact you're in the air?
14:47You're in a big metal tube of farts in the sky.
14:51Like...
14:51Well, maybe not.
14:52There's a mental thing in your head where you say,
14:54right, let me just proofread that before it comes out of my mouth.
14:57And that just didn't happen.
14:59Definitely the next time on a plane I'm thinking,
15:01what is the smell?
15:03Maybe I've just had really bad experiences on planes in the past.
15:07You've got a career in, like, working for some airline's market board.
15:11Just, like, a big metal tube full of farts in the sky.
15:14Yeah, that's quite enough, thank you.
15:16I couldn't be happier.
15:17The starter went really, really well.
15:18They all said it was very nice, and they all finished it.
15:21Empty plates, what more can I ask for?
15:23Time for the main.
15:25I'm not very good at presentation.
15:27You don't think about it when it's your family.
15:30They just like to be fed.
15:32Potatoes are done great, crispy-looking,
15:35and the beef looks fantastic.
15:37I better remember Danny this time, haven't I?
15:39Probably best.
15:40The main is Berthe Bourguignon.
15:42Oh, oh.
15:43Here you go, Danny.
15:45I'm not forgetting you.
15:46Oh, welcome first this time.
15:46Oh, God.
15:47What an honour.
15:48Oh, my God.
15:49My mouth is actually watering.
15:54That gravy is outstanding.
15:56I mean, I'd eat that off a flip-flop, man.
15:57That's delicious.
15:59The beef bourguignon.
16:00Bourguignon?
16:02Bourguignon.
16:03I could have eaten that.
16:05Like, I could have just eaten that by itself.
16:08The main course was really, really nice.
16:10The beef was a little bit dry, but everything else was really nice.
16:14So, Pauline, what do you do for a living?
16:17Mmm.
16:17Mmm.
16:19This is the question.
16:20This is the question.
16:20Oh, she's preparing.
16:21What do you think?
16:23Let's just have a swig of the wine.
16:25I'd say from the way that you've welcomed and made everyone feel welcome in your home.
16:30I don't know.
16:31I'm just thinking the word care comes to mind.
16:34I could definitely see you as a nurse.
16:37But, like, a head nurse.
16:39Like, with a nice team, yeah.
16:40You've got a very caring nature, making, looking after people.
16:43Yeah, that's where I'm coming from, really.
16:44I could see that, sort of.
16:45Yeah.
16:45Um, but I also think maybe.
16:47We haven't seen it yet, but I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side here.
16:51I reckon you...
16:52In a nice way!
16:53In a nice way!
16:54I think I'm on the same vibe.
16:56I think you've got that lovely energy of, like, looking out for other people,
17:00but paying attention to detail as well.
17:02Well, I have to tell you all, you're spot on.
17:05Yay!
17:06Oh, no way!
17:07So, my job title is I'm a specialist palliative care nurse.
17:11Oh!
17:12I've been in the NHS 41 years.
17:14Wow!
17:15I think we all guessed Pauline's profession,
17:17because she was just really caring and humble and just how she was with each person.
17:22I kind of have, like, first-hand experience of, you know,
17:26NHS nurses being, like, absolute living angels.
17:29We need to really put these people on pedestals,
17:32because they are doing a service that not everyone can do.
17:37I thought I'd like to do different things.
17:39I've always thought I'd like to work in, like, travel or...
17:42Yeah, something...
17:43Even, like, in a pub or a restaurant.
17:44I can see that leopard print behind the bar.
17:46I can see you pulling a pint.
17:49Hiya, love.
17:50You see you.
17:50There she is.
17:51I just think that'd be great.
17:52You're looking after people still.
17:53Yeah, transferable skills.
17:54It's comparable, I think, yeah.
17:55Do I think Pauline would be a good landlady?
17:57Yes, I do.
17:58Definitely in that leopard print shirt.
18:00I could see her being a right good laugh.
18:02Knows everyone's names coming in.
18:04Yeah, she'd be great.
18:05That was spot on.
18:07Thank you, Pauline.
18:07Thank you very much.
18:08That was perfect.
18:09Thank you very much.
18:10Right, everybody, I've got a little surprise for you,
18:12if you'd all like to follow me into the garden.
18:14Oh, my God!
18:17Oh, my God!
18:19It's only the ruddy WI Socialites choir starring none other
18:24than Pauline herself.
18:26Oh, my life is changing every day.
18:33When I seen the choir outside, it was amazing.
18:36Like, it was such a shock.
18:38Everyone was just having such a good time.
18:40We were all dancing.
18:41And it was just really, really nice.
18:43But now I'm feeling even more
18:48Because I can't hold you
18:52When I saw the choir, and then when I saw Pauline singing
18:55with the choir, I felt transported to another little world.
19:21I think they were quite surprised.
19:23it was probably something they weren't expecting you can't help but smile when
19:29you hear people singing I think what emotions will be stirred by this dessert
19:33I wonder this is me being very arty I don't usually do any decoration well
19:40there is a grand at stake so this is my final course my last chance to impress
19:45let's hope they like it a great big glass of red berry cheesecake and four berries
19:57on a stick oh thank you that's half the size of you that so it was big and it was
20:14massive well yeah again very very tasty I like the levels of the flavors so the
20:20raspberry was very tart the the cheese cakey bit was nice of cream the dessert
20:25was really really nice but it was tough to get through to them the base I've got
20:33to the bottom the bottom tastes delicious I think they're going here yeah they've
20:53gone I think we'll leave them to it with a nice laugh so I think the group seems to
20:58have bonded quite quickly I think it's always nice to end the evening on a good
21:02belly laugh at the end of the day we're about to go home we've had a really nice
21:05meal Pauline's been a great host there's been so many moments where we've just been
21:10giggling but it would just be like one person would say one thing another
21:14person was anything and then it set someone else off just like this little
21:18bubbly moment I think I've done very well I think my hosting was good I think they
21:23like my food so I'm feeling quite optimistic scores please tonight it was full of
21:29love and cozy comfort goodness and so for that reason I give Pauline an eight tonight I'm
21:37scoring Pauline an eight the atmosphere was great a hosting was great but there was a few
21:43little things with the food so for that I'm gonna give her a seven tonight was a great night Pauline
21:48was a great host however the food just didn't hit it for me therefore I'm going to give Pauline a
21:55six
21:56all of which means that Pauline starts the week with a respectable 29 out of 40
22:04next time Monica Musings if you could rename yourself what would it be Pauline Champagne what by Amy
22:13wilderness sound like a naturist you don't necessarily have to get your kit off Pauline Champagne is getting
22:18a kit off and problem pouches and we'll keep this to give between us and never mention ever again
22:23all right I'll be great that'll be great it will stay in my dreams
22:51I'll be great
22:56you
