00:02You could soon be able to send a handgun through the mail via the U.S. Postal Service.
00:08The Trump administration is pushing to overturn a nearly 100-year-old federal restriction
00:13that bans most people from shipping concealable firearms through the mail.
00:18The Justice Department says the rule violates the Second Amendment,
00:21that law-abiding gun owners should be allowed to mail handguns
00:25under the same types of safety requirements already used for rifles and shotguns.
00:30The proposal is already drawing pushback from Democratic attorneys general in more than 20 states,
00:36including Nevada, where the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history happened
00:40at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas in 2017.
00:44In a statement to the Associated Press, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford said,
00:48To suggest we make it easier for criminals and abusers to access firearms is a slap in the face.
00:55to gun violence survivors and law enforcement.
00:58The NRA, though, is praising the change,
01:00while gun safety groups warn it could make illegal firearms harder to track.
