00:01For neighbours in Stairn Court Road, the aftermath of the explosion left a community shaken.
00:07Homes were evacuated, emergency crews flooded the area and questions quickly followed about how such a devastating incident could happen
00:16inside a residential street in Bristol.
00:19At the centre is 35-year-old Joanne Shaw, known to friends and family as Jo.
00:24In a tribute released through Avon and Somerset Police, her family described her as warm, kind and deeply devoted to
00:32her child.
00:33They said she was well known in the Stapleton area of Bristol for her bubbly and friendly personality, adding that
00:40she loved meeting people, listening to their stories and building lasting friendships.
00:45But alongside those memories, her family also spoke about her final moments.
00:50In their statement, they said Joanne showed extraordinary strength and selflessness in the face of unimaginable fear, placing herself between
00:58danger and the people she loved.
01:00They described her actions as heroic and said she'd be remembered for her bravery and protective instinct.
01:07Avon and Somerset Police say specially trained officers are continuing to support Joanne Shaw's family,
01:12whilst investigators examine the full circumstances surrounding the explosion and the police response beforehand.
01:19The force says the explosion happened shortly after officers received a call from inside the house during the early hours
01:26of Sunday morning.
01:27According to Avon and Somerset Police, the caller reported a domestic-related incident and said a man known to them
01:33had forced entry to the property.
01:36The caller stayed on the line while officers were sent to the address.
01:39Police say that around 6.30 in the morning, the caller reported the man was believed to be carrying an
01:44explosive device.
01:45Roughly two minutes later, there was an explosion at that house.
01:49Jo Shaw and her former partner, 41-year-old Ryan Kelly, both suffered fatal injuries.
01:54Three other people, including a child, were treated for minor injuries and did not need hospital admission.
01:59Superintendent Matt Epps described the events as horrendous and confirmed that Jo Shaw's death had officially been recorded as a
02:05homicide,
02:06based on the information currently known to investigators.
02:09Police have also confirmed they're not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.
02:13In the hours after the explosion, nearby residents were evacuated while Army teams carried out searches to make sure the
02:19surrounding area was safe.
02:21Investigators also searched an address in Speedwell, where Ryan Kelly had been living.
02:25Police said no evacuations were needed there.
02:28Avon and Somerset Police have now referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
02:33The force said that's because there'd been previous police contact involving other reported domestic incidents before the explosion happened.
02:40For Jo Shaw's family, though, the focus remains on the loss of a mother, daughter and loved one they say
02:46brought warmth and strength into countless lives.
02:49In their final words of tribute, they said Joanne would remain forever in their hearts and memories and ask for
02:55privacy as they continue to grieve.
02:57In their final words, they said Joanne would remain forever in their hearts.
