01:01Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dresu Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:06We begin with the news.
01:17Russia's Defense Ministry denounced the country has registered 1,365 violations by Ukraine to the truce declared by President Biden
01:25on the occasion of Victory Day celebrations.
01:27Precisely, the Ministry stated the Ukrainian military continues striking Russian army positions and civilian facilities in the borderline areas of
01:36the Bolgorod and Kuzk regions.
01:38Kiev has reportedly delivered 887 strikes using unmanned aerial vehicles and shelled Russian army positions 153 times from artillery weapons,
01:48multiple launch rocket systems, mortars and tanks.
01:52Moscow informed that Russian forces which have fully ceased combat operations in compliance with the presidential order have delivered retaliatory
01:59strikes amid the violations.
02:11In this context, operations at 13 Russian airports have been temporarily suspended, according to the Transport Ministry, after Ukrainian drones
02:18struck the building of the Southern Russia Air Navigation Branch.
02:22Precisely, Ukrainian drones entered the administrative building of the branch regional center in Rostov-on-Don, which manages air traffic
02:30in the region.
02:31In the aftermath, it was confirmed that the staff is safe and analysis of the equipment's operational status is underway.
02:37The strike prompted the suspension of airport operations in several hubs as air traffic control procedures are being adjusted.
02:44The aviation restrictions have caused a delay or cancellation of over 80 flights.
03:00According to the World Health Organization, more cases of Hanta virus could emerge after three people died from the infection
03:07aboard a cruise ship as several passengers disembarked before the outbreak was confirmed.
03:12Health authorities affirmed that more cases could be reported, but the outbreak is expected to remain limited if the necessary
03:19precautions are taken.
03:20This comes as around 40 people from 12 different countries left the cruise ship in the British island of St.
03:26Helene before the outbreak was confirmed.
03:29In this context, the WHO is coordinating closely with multiple countries under the international health regulations but assesses the public
03:37health risks as well.
03:39For her part, WHO Acting Director for the Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention, Maria van Kerkhoff,
03:48stressed that health authorities seek to ease fears of a wider global outbreak of the rotten-borne virus, noting that
03:55it is less contagious than COVID-19.
04:02I know this virus, Hanta viruses have been around for quite a while.
04:06There's a lot of detail that we know.
04:08I'm going to ask Anais to come in and say this, but I want to be unequivocal here.
04:11This is not SARS-CoV-2.
04:13This is not the start of a COVID pandemic.
04:15This is an outbreak that we see on a ship.
04:17There's a confined area.
04:19We have five confirmed cases so far.
04:22We completely understand why these questions are coming,
04:25and we are trying to provide all of the information that we can provide.
04:32For his part, the WHO Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus briefed the media on Thursday in Geneva regarding the Hanta virus
04:39outbreak,
04:39where he stressed the importance of international health security organization,
04:43since two of the countries affected Argentina and the United States left the WHO earlier this year.
04:49Health security needs inversality.
04:54And any vacuum, any space which is not covered actually gives advantage to the virus.
05:02And the best immunity we have is solidarity.
05:08So because of the event that's happening now, and both Argentina and the U.S. are affected,
05:17I think they will reconsider their decisions because they can see how important the inversality is for health security.
05:29Because viruses don't care about our politics and they don't care about our borders.
05:42And in Spain, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the Dutch flag cruise ship MV Huntius,
05:47affected by an outbreak of Hanta virus, will dock in the Canary Islands within three to four days,
05:52given the situation which now includes eight infected and three deaths.
05:56Minister Monica Garcia announced the activation of the European Union's civil protection mechanism
06:01to coordinate an international response.
06:03The operation will prioritize the immediate repatriation of all passengers to their countries of origin,
06:09while the 14 Spanish citizens on board will be transferred under strict biosafety measures to Madrid,
06:14where they will quarantine at the GĂłmez Ulla military hospital.
06:33In Argentina, heavy rains swept through Mar del Plata on Thursday evening, triggering catastrophic flash flooding
06:39and causing extensive damage to homes and vehicles.
06:42The heavy rains were accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, causing significant property damage
06:47as it flooded streets in the suburbs and downtown of the central eastern Argentinian city.
06:52In this context, civil defense registered over 100 complaints, mainly regarding falling trees, utility poles and power lines.
07:00Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a yellow alert and is forecasting more rain and a wind advisory for
07:07the weekend.
07:08Moreover, the storm triggered the municipal government to suspend classes across the territory on Friday,
07:14urging the population to take every precaution in light of the weather conditions.
07:26We now have our first break. Stay with us.
07:49A new chapter has opened in the anti-corruption campaign within the Chinese military,
07:54following a Denmark conviction of two former defense ministers.
07:57Our correspondent, Bruno Fossey, with the details.
08:01Greetings, comrades. Here from Beijing, a military court sentenced the former Chinese defense minister,
08:08Wang Fengen and Li Chengu to death sentence with a two-year suspension.
08:15This according to the ruling, both were found guilty of corruption's offense related to bribery.
08:23The court decision did not specify the amounts involved in the cases.
08:28The sentence also includes the deprivation of their political rights for their life and the total confiscation of their assets.
08:39After a two-year suspension period, the sentence will automatically be commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
08:52These are the most severe sanctions imposed in high-ranking military officers since the start of the anti-corruption campaign
09:04launched in 2012 under the leadership of the President Xi Jinping,
09:10which has brought multiple levels of the country's military and political structure under investigation.
09:19With that report from here, the capital of China will go back with you in the studios.
09:28Let's now move on to other topics.
09:46Air defenses were activated in southern Iran after reports of new bombings against the civilian population.
09:52Local authorities denounced multiple U.S. airstrikes against civilian areas in Bandar Hamir,
09:57Zurich and Kashima Island, as well as in the capital, Tehran.
10:01Prior to the bombings, Iranian government authorities stated that the U.S. military vowed a ceasefire
10:07by attacking an Iranian tanker sailing from the Yask region towards the Strait of Hormuz.
10:12Another ship entering the Strait near the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates was also attacked.
10:25In this context, the Iranian armed forces responded immediately with retaliatory attacks on U.S. military vessels
10:31in the eastern Strait of Hormuz and south of the port of Shabahar, causing significant damage.
10:37A spokesperson for the Hatam al-Ambiyya central headquarters said that Iran would give a crushing response
10:42to any aggression without the slightest hesitation.
10:51And the naval force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps exercised its right to self-defense
10:56in response to attacks by the U.S. imperialist forces.
10:59Through its social media accounts, the naval command of IRGC stated,
11:04Following the violation of the ceasefire and the aggression of the terrorist U.S. military
11:08against an Iranian oil tanker near the port of Jask and the approach of U.S. terrorist military destroyers
11:13towards the Strait of Hormuz, a very large-scale and precise combined operation was carried out
11:19using various anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles, along with kamikaze drones,
11:24equipped with high-explosive warheads, targeting the enemy destroyers.
11:28The statement added,
11:29and intelligence monitoring indicates significant damage inflicted on the U.S. enemy,
11:34and three hostile invading warships rapidly fled the Strait of Hormuz area.
11:46And despite the recent escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz,
11:51U.S. President Donald Trump stated through ABC News that the ceasefire with Iran remains in effect.
11:56The U.S. head of state said,
11:57it's just a love tap, the ceasefire is in effect.
12:09On Thursday, the United Nations Security Council witnessed a sharp diplomatic confrontation
12:14as tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran defends its sovereignty over the waterway.
12:18The emergency meeting took place as the United States and its allied Gulf nations pressured the international body
12:25to approve a draft resolution which aims to forcibly open the Strait of Hormuz.
12:30The resolution faced strong opposition from countries like Russia and China
12:34that are likely to use their veto, describing it as biased.
12:37For his part, Russia's representative Vasily Nevencia stressed that true security for maritime navigation in the Persian Gulf
12:44cannot be achieved through one-sided condemnation of provocative measures.
12:49The resolution threatens Iran with sanctions and other measures
12:52if it does not halt attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz,
12:55stop imposing tolls, and disclose the location of all mines to allow freedom of navigation
13:00while the U.S. continues violating the ceasefire in the region.
13:12For his part, Iran's permanent representative to the U.N. Amir Sayyir Banning criticized the resolution
13:17saying it does not seek to protect international navigation
13:20but to legitimize the unlawful actions of the U.S. in the region
13:23while also stating that the adoption of this resolution would damage the cruelty of the international body.
13:31And today before the Council members, therefore, is why should a member state located thousands of miles away from the
13:39Persian Gulf
13:39and acting in a destabilizing manner be permitted to use the Security Council to advance its political agenda in the
13:47Persian Gulf?
13:48While Iran, as a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz, is denied its lawful rights to defend its security
13:56and sovereignty
13:57and is instead threatened with enforcement action on the Chapter 7 of the Charter.
14:04A member of the Security Council must provide a clear and principled response to this fundamental question
14:12because today is Iran, tomorrow will be another state. Let it be clear.
14:22The path to the escalation and stability lies in respect for international law and the Charter of the United Nations,
14:32not in the misuse of Security Council for political purposes and further military objectives.
14:43Fighters from the Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah attacked two Israeli tanks attempting to advance towards several towns in southern Lebanon.
14:51According to reports from the resistance, the armored vehicles were hit by guided missiles,
14:56halting their advance in the border area.
14:59The operation is part of the regional escalation following the war between Israel, the United States and Iran,
15:05which has left more than 2,700 dead in Lebanon.
15:09Hezbollah maintains that its actions are in defense of Lebanese sovereignty
15:13and a response to the continuous violations of the ceasefire by the Israeli-Sanist regime.
15:25And Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Civil Merit
15:30to United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese on Thursday.
15:34Sanchez received Albanese at La Moncloa government complex in Madrid,
15:39where they discussed the situation in Palestine and the importance of upholding international law.
15:45Albanese, an Italian jurist who served as the UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories,
15:50has called for accountability over the killing of civilians and violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza.
15:57She has faced U.S. sanctions over her investigations into Israeli human rights abuses in Palestine.
16:03The Order of Civil Merit is one of Spain's highest civilian owners
16:07and is awarded to Spanish and foreign citizens for extraordinary services benefiting the state or society.
16:21In other topics, Chad has declared a 20-day state of emergency in the Lake Chad region on Thursday,
16:27following a wave of deadly attacks planned on jihadist group Boko Haram.
16:31Government spokesman Ghazim Sharif specified in an address that the measure,
16:37which will be in place from midnight on May 7th until May 27th,
16:41makes it possible to carry out the arrest of suspects under provisional detention,
16:45ban the movement of people and vehicles, and close the border.
16:48Sharif said the authorities reviewed the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the region,
16:53citing renewed Boko Haram attacks, civilian displacements, and growing threats to people and property.
17:00The latest violence followed a deadly raid on the Parca Toloro military base along Lake Chad,
17:06where at least 26 army personnel, including two senior generals,
17:09were killed in ambushes triggering nationwide mourning and intensified military operations.
17:19We now have our second break. Don't go away.
17:41Welcome back.
17:42In Peru, political and social organizations gathered outside the headquarters of the National Jury of Elections in Lima
17:47to demand respect for democracy and the will of the people as expressed in the polls.
17:52Members of the Together for Peru Party, the Workers' Party, People's First Popular Unity,
17:57and other political groups held a seating on Thursday under the slogan,
18:01Respect for the Popular Vote.
18:03This way, participants rejected right-wing groups' calls to disregard the results of the 2026 general elections of April 12.
18:10Demonstrators demanded respect for democracy and urged the G&E not to alter the electoral calendar
18:16and to declare the winners of the first round.
18:18The electoral authority expects to have the final results of the April 12 election by mid-May,
18:23with the second round of the presidential polls scheduled for June 7.
18:33The government of Venezuela informed the Venezuelan people that this Thursday the country reached a milestone in electricity demand,
18:40so technical teams are carrying out operations to guarantee the stability of the surface.
18:45In a statement, the Sectoral Vice Presidency of Public Works reported that this Thursday the country reached a record figure
18:51of 15,579 MW,
18:54the highest in the last nine years, as a result of the continuing high temperatures and the economic growth that
19:00continues to maintain its momentum.
19:02In light of this situation, technical teams remain deployed carrying out stabilization and protection operations for the national electric system.
19:09Likewise, the private sector, which has its own power generation sources,
19:14is being called upon to make responsible use of them in light of the high temperatures forecast for this weekend.
19:23The national government also announced that starting tomorrow, a nationwide initiative will begin involving all sectors to present
19:30and inform the country about the recovery and transformation plan for the national electric system.
19:35Finally, it is necessary to point out that international sanctions have affected the national electric system contributing to the difficulties
19:42in its full recovery.
19:44Nevertheless, the national government reaffirms its commitment to continue working tirelessly to strengthen the electrical surface.
19:56In this context, the Venezuelan Minister of Electric Power, Rolando Alcala, stated that unilateral coercive measures have prevented the Venezuelan
20:03government
20:03from replacing the power grid of the national electricity system, leading to an increase in power outages.
20:13The electricity generation, transmission, and distribution system consists of a series of pieces of equipment that have a limited service
20:20life.
20:23When this service life expires, it directly contributes to the occurrence of failures, on the lack of reliability, and the
20:29lack of service continuity.
20:35Given the sanctions, the sanctions that have been in place all these years, that we have been sanctioned and with
20:42all those unilateral coercive measures,
20:47We are talking about 11 years, Minister.
20:50What has happened? Well, that has prevented us from purchasing equipment.
20:56It has prevented us from replacing equipment, upgrading technology, and upgrading the entire infrastructure that makes up the country's power
21:04system.
21:17On Thursday, the United States government imposed new unilateral coercive measures against two Cuban entities.
21:23According to a press statement from the U.S. Department of State, the sanctions target the business group Gaesa and
21:30Moanico.
21:31These measures follow the executive orders signed by Donald Trump on May 1, which is intended to affect key sectors
21:37of the Cuban economy,
21:39such as energy, mining, tourism, and financial services.
21:43The sanctions come amid ongoing U.S. threats against the island and the tightening of the blockade affecting the population's
21:49well-being.
21:57And through his official ex-account, Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel condemned the new U.S. economic blockade measures.
22:03Cuban President DĂaz-Canel stated,
22:05Our people already know the cruelty behind the actions of the U.S. government and the viciousness with which it
22:12is capable of attacking them.
22:13They understand, as does the rest of the world, that this is a unilateral aggression against a nation and a
22:19population whose only aspiration is to live in peace,
22:22in control of their own destiny, free from the harmful interference of U.S. imperialism.
22:29The Cuban head of state also affirmed the additional economic blockade measures announced today worsen the already challenging circumstances our
22:38country is facing,
22:39but at the same time they strengthened our resolve to defend our homeland, our revolution, and our commitment to socialism.
23:02In Cuba, the 33rd edition of the RomerĂas de Mayo, or May pilgrimage, came to a close in the eastern
23:09city of HolguĂn.
23:10For the last day, hundreds joined the pilgrims on their traditional procession through the city streets, from the historic district
23:16to the modern area,
23:17in a ceremony rich in symbolism that once again brought generations together around culture.
23:23The act included the ascent of the HolguĂn acts and the planting of the tree of peace, affirming culture as
23:29a tool for political and social assertion in the face of the ongoing U.S. threats and blockade.
23:34The event, which closed with a performance by salsa singer Isaac Delgado, served for seven days as a space for
23:41young artists from Cuba and various nations to engage in concerts, exhibitions, debates, and theoretical forums.
