00:00The process of releasing and exchanging detainees between the Islamic resistance movement Hamas and Israel has been completed as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and the legitimization of Gaza.
00:22In Colombia, new information on the 1999 kidnapping of late activist Piedra Cordoba revealed that businessman Hernán Echavarría ordered her execution at the time.
00:40Other Russian government warned the United States that supplying tomahawk missiles to Ukraine could have disastrous consequences.
00:52Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dele Su Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin the news.
00:59The process of releasing and exchanging detainees between the Islamic resistance movement Hamas and Israel has been completed as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and the legitimization of Gaza.
01:02The process of releasing and exchanging detainees between the Islamic resistance movement Hamas and Israel has been completed as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and the legitimization of Gaza.
01:17The process of releasing and exchanging detainees between the Islamic resistance movement, Hamas,
01:23and Israel has been completed as part of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and
01:27the legitimization of Gaza. Voices loaded with hostages illegally detained in Tel Aviv arrived
01:32in the city of Ramallah on Monday. The Israeli cabinet released a total of 1,700 Palestinian
01:37prisoners, most of them civilians, who had been held without any legal basis in the state of prison.
01:43According to academic Basil Afaraj, the released Palestinian prisoners are likely to be in horrible
01:50conditions as Palestinians in Israeli prisons are subjected to the most brutal and violent torture.
01:55It is expected that after being received by their families, the detainees will undergo testing and
02:00receive psychological help to reintegrate into society.
02:03Let's now welcome political scientist Bruno Limas Rocha to go deeper on the latest developments
02:16in Gaza and the high-level summit in Egypt. Welcome, Bruno, to From the South.
02:20Bruno Limas Rocha Well, thanks for having me.
02:23It's our pleasure. Bruno, today we saw the completion of that first phase of the ceasefire agreement,
02:28which was the exchange of prisoners. Before going into that deeper, what factors led to the signing
02:33of the current ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas?
02:38I really understand that when Tel Aviv decided, with a revolt, the compliance and the complicity,
02:45sorry, of United States to bombard Qatar, to attack Doha, and reminding that Qatar, United Emirates,
02:55and Saudi Arabia, they are aligned to the United States, they crossed a new red line.
03:02And this was the must-be situation for Doha, for Cairo, and even for Erdogan in Ankara.
03:10Because if they allowed the Israeli forces to bombard U.S. allies in the region,
03:18they would be, this would be a green flag to attack all over all countries there, even a NATO member
03:25like Turkey. So this was the last situation of Netanyahu before being forced to sign an agreement
03:33with Donald Trump and the ceasefire and the release of common prisoners.
03:37Going back to the released Palestinian prisoners, some are actually not returning home because they have
03:43been exiled. What message does this send and what effects could the release of important figures
03:49from the resistance movements have on the future stability of the current agreement?
03:56This is another key point, thanks for the question, because if we understand the process of the
04:03Palestinian revolution, the Palestinian national liberation movement, always the prisoners who went
04:08out of the jail and reinforced the political party, the political movements, they were the key factors
04:16for the new institutions and the new stable stability situation. I understand that if the ceasefire goes
04:24forward to a Palestinian state or a complex agreement, I'm very skeptical about this, but this is a
04:32possibility. Those release will occupy key positions in the new Palestinian political constellation after the
04:43Beijing agreement of last year with 14 political parties, including Fatah and Hamas. They must have
04:50their human resources on the ground in the field, operating for a national liberation movement.
04:57For better or for worse, Bruno, the United States played an important role in this
05:02negotiations, even though they say they wanted to end the conflict, while at the same time they
05:06were continuing to provide support military and diplomatic to this regime to carry out this
05:11genocide of war on Gaza. So what geopolitical interests do you think the United States has in the region?
05:19Israel is a protegee of United States. As said Joe Biden before, it's like a fortress, a fort, a military
05:29effort of the Western societies, especially in the United States inside the Middle East.
05:35I think that Trump does have the illusion to establish a protectorate of Palestinians with
05:43half sovereignty being funded and with money from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Emirates,
05:51and being so-called protected by NATO forces like Turkey.
05:55Israel understands, but he cannot see the only solution, is a viable sovereign Palestinian state.
06:03Otherwise, in a way or another, the struggle will begin, will continue and will begin again.
06:10Egypt, also this Monday, Egypt is hosting a peace summit with a lot of international
06:16representation of the highest level. What concrete results can we expect from this summit and what role
06:21will the Arab countries play in the political and economic future of Gaza and the West Bank?
06:28Again, wonderful questions. First, I understand that diplomacy of Egypt is very capable and they are very
06:37concerned about the details. Egypt understands that besides being a client of US money, they cannot
06:45allow a new Palestinian city or a new refugee camp or one so big one, a huge one in the Sinai Peninsula.
06:56So they are concerned about the details. The possibility of the next phase is to rebuild Gaza with Arab money
07:06and a common force organized by the Arab League and the International Islamic Cooperation Organization.
07:13This is the only solution. Palestinian people will not accept a new British mandate, a new protectorate,
07:20and not even can have, they can not even listen the name of Tony Blair and other Western politicians to be
07:29the manager of a new Gaza. This is unviable and the Egyptian diplomatics, they won't allow this to go on.
07:37Bruno, to conclude, we know the track record of Israel when it comes to ceasefires. So how sustainable do you believe
07:44this fire agreement between Israel and Hamas is? Will it last?
07:48I hope so, but all along those years, those decades, we learned to not believe any single words from Israel and even words from Netanyahu.
08:03But they understand that they are obedient to Trump. And as far as Washington does not allow them to kill
08:10anymore or to kill directly anymore, they will be more concerned about it. Bad news. After the ceasefire,
08:18they still bombard the Gaza city yesterday, if I'm not yesterday. And after the ceasefire, they killed over 64
08:26Palestinian citizens. It's to wait and to be confident on the Palestinian political forces to establish a new
08:36situation. This is the only way out. Thank you, Bruno, very much for your time and your inputs here from
08:43the South with us and with our audience. Thank you for having me. It was our pleasure. Let's now take our
08:50very first short break. Remember, you can join us on TikTok at Terezole English, where you'll find news in

09:19Colombian media outlets revealed new information related to the kidnapping of the late activist Pierre
09:24Cordova in 1999. Businessman Hernán Echavarría Oluzaga ordered her execution, but the parliamentary
09:31command decided to disobey him. On October 12, the case took a turn following the conviction of José Miguel
09:37Narvaez Martínez, director of the Administrative Department of Security of Colombia during Álvaro
09:42Uribe's presidency. Judge Claudia Castro sentenced Narvaez to 28 years in prison for being the mastermind
09:49behind the kidnapping of the former senator. The ruling reopened the case, which is currently under
09:54investigation and led to new details, such as evidence on the criminal order issued by Hernán Echavarría,
10:00as told in court by the former political leader of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia.
10:11After the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council requested by Venezuela to denounce the
10:15escalation of aggression by the United States, Washington did not stop the threat, but expanded
10:20its war fleet in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, major exercises continue to defend the country,
10:24and on the streets, the Venezuelan people give lessons in peace. The report with Madalene García.
10:29For the homeland, Bolivar's army is ready for Venezuela to exercise its legitimate defense
10:45if the United States attacks. This is established in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which
10:54Washington hinted it would invoke, with the false narrative that it would be protecting the security
10:58of its nation from drug trafficking, which it fictitiously links to President Maduro,
11:02solely to achieve a regime change, as it has done in other countries.
11:11The bottom line is to take over the oil, and while military exercises continue,
11:15a decision is expected on the three proposals Venezuela requested at the UN, including the approval
11:20of a resolution by the Security Council, so that all members, including the United States,
11:25respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Venezuela, but the United States has already
11:38responded. It has expanded its South Command fleet. It wants to turn these Caribbean waters into a war zone.
11:43This is how the sea sounds now. Dense. Venezuela is fighting to defend peace, and to ensure that military
11:57exercises remain only a symbol of dignity and defense of sovereignty.
12:06We tell the world that Venezuela is a land of peace, Venezuela is a land of peace,
12:11and Venezuela will continue to be a land of peace, long live the homeland, always loyal,
12:16long live the homeland, we will prevail, God is with us.
12:22With every sunset where your weapons do not respond to the threat from the United States,
12:26it is one more day where peace wins.
12:31From military exercises to a supermarket, this is another reality, there is no panic buying.
12:36This is how everyday life is lived, in peace, where Christmas is already being celebrated.
12:45This is how Caracas, the capital of the country, looks like. As the Venezuelans enjoy life in their nation.
12:56Nothing can stop the right to existence. It is a lesson in dignity.
13:00A strong contrast not only in San Agustin in Venezuela, is how you see it here. The reality
13:10children playing, people sharing, playing dominoes going out to the squares.
13:17The president decreed Christmas and people are happy, joyful, sharing places to meet.
13:21The lights adorn spirituality. Venezuelans are gaining ground against the escalating aggression
13:32of the United States. This country can be described as one of the happiest countries in the world.
13:40We are not a country at war, we are not people who like these military conflicts.
13:44The contrast is startling. The aggression of the United States and the peace defended by Venezuela.
13:54Madeline Garcia, Telesur, Caracas, Venezuela.
13:59Meanwhile in Ecuador, on October 12th, a peaceful march against the government took place,
14:03which from the very first minute was repressed by the national police and the armed forces,
14:07despite the fact that there were children and elderly people present.
14:10In the following report, Gabriela Mena has the details.
14:14This is how several streets in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, looked, completely filled with smoke
14:23and tear gas launched by the national police and the armed forces to repress the protests
14:27against the policies of the Noboa government. From the very first minute, citizens vigorously
14:32rejected the executives' measures and expressed that they would not give in to the threats of the
14:35the uniformed officials.
14:37It is clear that the union of the indigenous movement, workers, and the people is the only
14:44alternative to defeat the government's policies. In this context, we tell Noboa that we are not
14:49afraid of him, dammit, nor the state of emergency in some provinces, nor the fact that he has mobilized
14:58the military troops, declaring war on the people to intimidate the mobilization of the Ecuadorian people.
15:09The day that began peacefully was immediately repressed, with protesters condemning the violation of
15:13their right to protest. Despite the attacks, more and more protesters joined in.
15:20We are currently gathered here for a march in which we will raise public awareness.
15:29However, the police attacked and chased the protesters despite the presence of elderly people
15:33and children. Meanwhile, citizens continue to express their rejection of the government,
15:37shouting slogans such as this is not paid for, it is the organized people. Out with Noboa. Out,
15:42and come, people, let's fight. And no one is going to silence us in the face of police abuse.
15:51It is a rejection of all the measures suffered by the people, the lack of education, the lack of
15:55health in general, and the authoritarianism of a government that does not have the capacity to govern.
16:00The police did not give the protesters a break. Several of them were injured by blows, tear gas
16:11canisters, suffocation, and shock in the face of intense repression. Even the national and
16:16international press was attacked by the uniformed officers. Today, you can't even protest peacefully,
16:24the first thing they do is attack. Who are the military and the police? I consider the police
16:32and the armed forces to be enemies of the people. I currently view them as criminals, as murderers
16:37who have nothing in common with us. They should be on our side, alongside the people.
16:46Police and military personnel detained and arrested several protesters without explanation.
16:51According to preliminary figures, more than 120 citizens were reportedly arrested during this
16:56day of national strike in Quito.
17:07We now have our second break coming up. Before we invite you to visit our Facebook page at
17:10Telesur English, that you'll be able to watch our top stories, special live coverage,
17:14and much more. We'll be right back.
17:35Welcome back. The Russian government warned the United States that supplying tomahawk missiles to
17:40Ukraine could have disastrous consequences. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed that the
17:45handling of tomahawk missiles would require the participation of U.S. specialists, so the possible
17:50delivery of such missiles to Kiev could have serious consequences. In this scenario, the Security
17:55Council warned that it is impossible to determine whether a tomahawk missile in flight is carrying
18:00nuclear conventional weapons. Dmitry Peskov issued these statements after President Donald Trump
18:04threatened Vladimir Putin with consequences if Russia does not resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
18:10And in the United States, the government shutdown continues and layoffs of public officials escalate.
18:22Nearly 4,200 employees from at least seven government agencies received termination letters.
18:27Among the agencies affected are the Departments of Health and Human Services, Education and Finance.
18:32In this regard, President Donald Trump warned that the layoffs would be very significant and blamed the
18:37Democrat Party for the political stalemate that led to the shutdown.
18:48And in France on Sunday, President Emmanuel Macron appointed Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu's new
18:53government amid the country's political crisis. Among the changes in the 34-member cabinet are the
18:58appointment of Paris Police Chief Lauren Nunez as Interior Minister and the head of the National
19:03Railway Company, Jean-Pierre Fagandou as Labour Minister. On the political side, Lecornu is keeping
19:09Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barraud and Economic Minister Roland Lecceur, as well as heavyweights such as
19:15Gerald Darmanin of Justice and Rashid Ad, Minister of Culture. The main mission of the next government
19:21would be to quickly present accounts for 2026 that would garner a majority in the National Assembly and allow for
19:27the restructuring of public finances, whose debt level reached 115.6% of GDP in June.
19:50And on Monday, the debt toll from flooding in central and eastern Mexico rose to at least 64 with another
19:5665 still missing, although it is also confirmed that the rainfall left thousands of people displaced
20:02and caused serious damage in at least 150 municipalities nationwide. In its most recent report,
20:08the National Coordination of Civil Protection said that the death occurred in the states of Hidalgo,
20:13Puebla, Queretaro and Veracruz. For her part, President Claudia Sheinbaum visited the most affected
20:18regions and emphasized that the government will guarantee comprehensive care and the necessary
20:24resources in the face of the natural disaster.
20:38Jose Gregorio Hernández, the doctor of the poor, who became a saint recognized by the Vatican because
20:43of the people of Venezuela have venerated him as miraculous for decades, we present this series in
20:50which our team searches for his footprints. Caracas, the city where a young Jose Gregorio Hernández arrived
21:02at the age of only 13 on April 9th, 1889, after a long and complicated journey from into his village,
21:09Isnotu. To get here, you have to go from La Guira to Curacao, from Curacao to Maracaibo, from Maracaibo to
21:17La Saiba, which is our port, and from La Saiba, here in horse or by car because the train wasn't running yet.
21:22He studied high school and then medicine in Caracas. Jose Gregorio also walked these halls at the Vargas
21:31Hospital. There, there you can find Jose Gregorio Hernández, in every resident studying at midnight,
21:40in every resident seeing patients, in every student taking laboratory samples. There is Jose Gregorio Hernández,
21:46that is the spirit, selfless for the patients.
21:55Calling that, a century later, this time from heaven, his devotees say, he seems to continue
21:59practicing with hundreds of patients who invoke him and doctors who astonishably accept his miraculous
22:04favors. I would tell you that miracles do exist, here I am, the one who was shot in the head, here I am.
22:12From a scientific point of view, there is no explanation for Yaxuri's total recovery.
22:24It is, let's say, like the legalization of the saint, because for us Venezuelans it already was.
22:29And yes, it is true. All of Venezuela is preparing for his canonization now at the altars of the Vatican.
22:40The fact is that this mural ceased to be a mural over time, and became a shrine many years ago.
22:44Mervin hurries. The tropical rain washes away these traces that began 20 years ago on the corner of
22:55Amadores de la Pastora in Caracas, where Jose Gregorio was fatally hit by a car in 1919,
23:02and where hundreds of devotees arrived today.
23:09I really wanted to come and visit here, because I hadn't been here before, right?
23:14I mean, my son told me he was going to bring me. I've been devoted since I was a child.
23:19I always heard my mother say that Dr. Jose Gregorio was so good, and I've always been devoted to him.
23:25It's beautiful, and we went to the museum, which is also beautiful, precious.
23:35A few blocks away is the museum where his home and office once stood.
23:39There, the vestiges of the past blend with modern enthusiasm.
23:45Everyone brings something different, each with their own concept.
23:48This is amazing. It really is something different for everyone.
23:55Maria Eugenia is moved. She is also expressing her gratitude.
24:04And now, six years later, I feel blessed.
24:09I am blessed because Jose Gregorio Hernandez was always there,
24:14always by my bedside, holding my hand.
24:17Like her, hundreds arrive at the procession that inaugurates weeks of religious jubilation
24:26prior to the canonization.
24:27For me, he is already Saint Gregorio. Ever since I can remember, I am 83 years old,
24:35and I am going to Isnotu. What do you think about that?
24:38The journey is no longer by Mueller boat, but Isnotu is far from Caracas,
24:46where the Andes begin and from where Gregorio set out as he signed his letters.
24:50Como él mismo firmaba sus más íntimas cartas, hoy convertido en el santo del pueblo
24:56que llega a los altares.
