00:00Fake and unproven images claim to show Leipzig car attack suspect
00:08A slew of unproven and false pictures and videos have emerged online after a car attack in the
00:14German city of Leipzig on Monday. The suspect, named Diffricke, according to media reports,
00:19drove a car into a crowd, killing two people and enduring multiple others.
00:23Authorities have released little verified information about the suspect,
00:27only confirming that he was a 33-year-old resident of the area and born in Germany but has not
00:32confirmed his identity. They also established that he had previously come to the attention of
00:37authorities for behavioral issues and was admitted and treated in a psychiatric hospital.
00:43One widely shared image shows the alleged suspect wearing a shirt with the local Antifa International.
00:49The source of the original image cannot be verified, but one of the earliest uploaders of the image is
00:54an account that shared what appears to be a genuine photo of the suspect in a boxing club shirt,
00:59alongside another image with the Antifa International shirt.
01:02When asked, the uploaders said the image came from a German language community platform
01:06that posts memes and political content. An account that amplified the image,
01:11later claimed it was fake, explaining that AI Chatbot Rogue had wrongly labeled it as authentic at first.
01:17At the same time, doctored images of the same photo gained traction online,
01:22showing the same man wearing a shirt bearing the Alternative for Germany Party logo.
01:27Hours after the incident, several videos were circulated on TikTok, claiming to show thousands
01:32demonstrating for the AfD. This footage, however, is not current or from Leipzig,
01:37it is actually from a demonstration against white-wing extremism in Nuremberg. Despite images of the
01:43suspects circulating, authorities have said that so far, they do not know if the perpetrator had a political
01:48or religious motive.
