00:00The U.S. and Iran exchanged fire in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday.
00:05Trump said it did not jeopardize the ceasefire but did threaten a harder response.
00:10U.S. President Donald Trump said the European Union has until the 4th of July to fully implement its trade
00:16deal or it will face higher tariffs.
00:21The United States and Iran exchanged fire on Thursday in the Strait of Hormuz.
00:27The exchange was a serious test of the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
00:32Trump, however, claims it did not jeopardize further ceasefire talks but did threaten to a harder response if Iran does
00:39not agree to a deal.
00:42After these strikes, is the ceasefire with Iran still on?
00:47Yeah, it is. They trifled with us today. We blew them away. They trifled. I call that a trifle.
00:54No, the talks are going very well but they have to understand if it doesn't get signed, they're going to
01:00have a lot of pain.
01:01The U.S. military said it intercepted attacks on three Navy ships in the waterway and responded with self-defense
01:08strikes.
01:09Iran on its end said it fired missiles after the U.S. targeted an Iranian oil tanker.
01:16Explosions were reported on Qesham Island in the city of Bandarabas in southern Iran.
01:21State-run media said the explosions heard were the result of air defenses intercepting drones.
01:27On Monday, Trump had announced a naval operation to help ships pass through Hormuz but called off the mission shortly
01:34after.
01:35Washington is now awaiting an Iranian response to a proposal it submitted to end the war and open the strait.
01:45The Trump administration has accused Europe of being an incubator for terrorism,
01:50criticizing what it called an immigration crisis plaguing the continent.
01:55It marks the latest criticism of Europe by the U.S. government
01:59and appeared in its latest counterterrorism strategy report, unveiled on Wednesday.
02:04The strategy also focuses on rooting out what it calls violent left-wing extremists,
02:09including what it described as, quote, radically pro-transgender groups.
02:14The report placed drug cartels in the Americas at the center of Washington's counterterrorism efforts,
02:20but despite this, some of the strongest language was reserved for Europe.
02:25The administration argued that the longer well-organized hostile groups exploit the continent's open borders,
02:31the more alien cultures grow, which would inevitably translate into more terrorism.
02:37The White House warned Europe that its so-called globalist policies and ideals must end immediately
02:42to halt the declines it claims the continent has been experiencing.
02:47U.S. allies in Europe will be alarmed to see themselves in the U.S.'s crosshairs once more,
02:52as they continue to wade in and out of U.S. President Donald Trump's favor.
02:57The previous such report produced by Washington warned that Europe was facing
03:01civilizational erasure due to left-wing radicalism.
03:09U.S. President Donald Trump said the European Union has until the 4th of July to fully implement its trade
03:16deal
03:16or it will face much higher tariffs.
03:19Trump made the announcement after a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
03:25It appears to be a deadline extension of the threat made by Trump last Friday,
03:30when he said tariffs on EU-made cars would be hiked to 25 percent sometime this week.
03:37Under the deal reached last summer, the EU committed to cutting remaining tariffs on U.S. goods.
03:42In return, the U.S. agreed to an all-inclusive tariff of 15 percent on most EU products.
03:49Thank you very much, Mr. President.
03:50As the European Parliament and member states are currently negotiating the legislation
03:54that would enable the removal of these tariffs.
03:57But a round of talks failed this week,
03:59as lawmakers want to insert safeguards in case Trump breaches the joint commitments
04:04or threatens the bloc's territorial integrity like he did with Greenland.
04:10However, von der Leyen remains positive and expressed confidence
04:13that the pending legislation would be approved before the deadline.
04:20With the arrival of hot weather, Portugal is once again preparing for the fire season.
04:25Every year, fire consumed thousands of hectares,
04:28making the country one of the hardest hit in Europe.
04:32In Viseu, more than 700 emergency responders from six European countries
04:36participated in a major international civil protection exercise.
04:41Teams from Cyprus, Czechia, Spain, France, Poland and Portugal
04:46tested their response to a large-scale, rapidly spreading wildfire.
04:51The exercise involved real resources on the ground,
04:54day and night operations,
04:55and simulated scenarios that included forested areas
04:59and residential zones without any risk to the public.
05:03In addition to firefighting,
05:05the exercise included training in evacuation procedures,
05:09support for affected communities,
05:11and coordination of national and international resources.
05:15Funded by the European Union,
05:17the exercise aims to strengthen international cooperation
05:19and prepare European countries
05:21to respond to increasingly frequent and complex disasters.
05:30Snow cover in Greece's mountains,
05:32a vital source of water for communities,
05:34agriculture and natural ecosystems during the dry summer months,
05:37has declined by more than half over the past four decades.
05:40This is revealed by a new study by Konstantin Aleksopoulos
05:43and Ian Willis of the Scott Polar Research Institute
05:46at the University of Cambridge.
05:48An international team of university researchers
05:50used the combination of satellite imagery,
05:52climate data, terrain maps and artificial intelligence
05:55to analyze how rising temperatures in the Mediterranean
05:58have affected snow cover in Greek mountains.
06:01Using a tool called Snow Mapper,
06:03the researchers found that snow cover was decreased by 58%
06:07over the last 40 years,
06:09with the rate of decline accelerating
06:10since the beginning of the 21st century.
06:13Researchers used satellite images from NASA and ESA missions,
06:17but because clouds and shadows of an abstract clear observation,
06:20the team employed an artificial intelligence technique,
06:22machine learning, to fill in the main gaps.
06:25This led to the creation of a tool
06:26that provides daily snow cover maps
06:28at a 100-meter resolution
06:30for 10 of Greece's highest mountain ranges,
06:32covering the period from 1984 to 2025.
06:35A result showed that Greece is losing its winter snow cover
06:38faster than most other mountain ranges,
06:41which could have serious consequences
06:42for communities, agriculture and the natural environment.
06:45The loss of snow cover from the world mountains
06:48is another important indicator of how climate change
06:50continues to put pressure on the natural environment,
06:53particularly in countries like Greece.
06:55The research team also included scientists
06:56from the British Antarctic Survey,
06:58the National Observatory of Athens
06:59and the Hellenic Mountain Observatory.
07:06Concern is mounting in Cyprus
07:07over this year's tourism outlook
07:09due to the war in Iran
07:10and initial data showing a significant drop
07:12in arrivals in April and the first days of May,
07:15ranging from 30 to 40 percent.
07:18Euronews visited Aegean Napa,
07:20where the absence of tourists is evident.
07:23Business owners say that events in the Middle East
07:25have significantly impacted the situation.
07:29The sun is shining, temperatures are around 20 degrees Celsius,
07:33the businesses are open,
07:35but what's missing is the tourists.
07:37We can't say there's nobody here, of course,
07:39but locals tell us that they're well down
07:41on the figures they had last year.
07:43Tourism business owners in Aegean Napa
07:44are seeing a very different picture this May
07:46compared to last year's record-breaking season.
07:49Normally, it's busy the boats,
07:51busy the hotels,
07:53busy all the restaurants.
07:54At this time, normally,
07:56all the hotels almost was fully booked last year.
07:59Compared to this year,
08:01I think so we are lower numbers from last year,
08:04about 30 to 40 percent.
08:06The mayor of Aegean Napa,
08:07Christos Zanet,
08:08to emphasize that the situation in the Middle East
08:10has caused significant damage,
08:11but tourists have begun to realize
08:13that Cyprus is a safe destination.
08:15That is why, as he says,
08:17there is now recovery.
08:18In 2025,
08:20it was the best tourist period in Cyprus,
08:23especially in the Aegean Napa,
08:25from the 2019.
08:27So, when we talk about rhythmic differences,
08:30we must also understand this.
08:32In the last two weeks,
08:34we see an explosion.
08:35We believe that the world
08:37believes in the Aegean Napa,
08:40in the Cyprus,
08:40that it's an safe destination
08:42and it seems that it's been interesting
08:45for the cities to come up.
08:48Tourists, who have started visiting Cyprus,
08:49don't seem worried about anything.
08:51As they say,
08:52they are enjoying the sun,
08:53the sea and the beauty of Cyprus.
08:55We were decided to come here
08:57for some time.
08:59Although there were a few options,
09:01but the temperature and the sun
09:03have been convinced us.
09:05And the images of the painting,
09:07to paint a few aquarels.
09:10Some tourists, however,
09:11haven't forgotten what's going on
09:12in the world right now.
09:14Uns gefällt es hier sehr gut.
09:16Leider ist die weltkritische Lage
09:19natürlich ein bisschen angespannt
09:21und wir hoffen auf einen baldigen Frieden
09:25für die ganze Welt.
09:27In May,
09:28flies from the UK
09:29are operating at 92% capacity.
09:33Das ist die ganze Welt.
09:36Das ist die ganze Welt.
10:11It's a super hypocrisy that they are participating.
10:15I mean, they tell that art is beyond the politics,
10:18but they are using art as a weapon in hybrid war in Europe.
10:23So this is absolutely insane that they are here,
10:27and I think no one progressive could accept that.
10:45I'm saying they should have included the US of A
10:48in that list of countries excluded
10:56because it's because of the politics of hate
11:00and war and all that that's been going on now for too long.
