00:00At least 26 people were killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine on Tuesday, as President
00:05Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Moscow's utter cynicism.
00:08At least 12 people died in an airstrike on Zaporizhia, five civilians were killed in
00:13the center of Kramatorsk, four in Dnipro and five more in Poltova.
00:17The attacks come as Moscow seeks a truce to stage its patriotic victory day parade on
00:22the 9th of May.
00:24Zelenskyy warned that the death toll could still rise, stating it is utter cynicism to
00:29request a ceasefire while carrying out missile and drone strikes every single day.
00:34Kiev has intensified its own retaliatory long-range strikes in the past fortnight with a drone
00:39attack on the Russian city of Cheboksary, reportedly killing two people and wounding 32.
00:45Ukraine's foreign minister denounced what he called criminal tactics after a double-tap
00:49strike killed four people in the Poltova region, including first responders who had arrived
00:54to help at the scene of an earlier attack.
00:57The Kremlin has claimed it will not strike Ukraine on the occasion of Victory Day on May
01:029, when it is set to stage a parade with no military hardware on display due to fears of
01:07Ukrainian strikes.
01:15The United States Secretary of Defense warned on Wednesday that any attack on commercial shipping
01:21in the Strait of Hormuz will be met with a quote, devastating response.
01:26Pete Hegseth also added that regardless of this, a ceasefire with Iran still holds.
01:32To what remains of Iran's forces, if you attack American troops or innocent commercial shipping,
01:38you will face overwhelming and devastating American firepower.
01:42The President has been very clear about this.
01:45We are not looking for a fight, but Iran also cannot be allowed to block innocent countries
01:51and their goods from an international waterway.
01:55The warning from the Pentagon came on the second day of a U.S. effort to facilitate the transit
02:01of commercial ships through the waterway.
02:03The Strait has been largely blocked by Iran since late February, when the U.S. and Israel
02:08launched its war against the Islamic Republic.
02:11Meanwhile, Iran has warned the U.S. against any further escalation in the Strait of Hormuz.
02:17Tehran has also vowed not to surrender control of the waterway.
02:25France's political left called for unity at a rally in Paris on Tuesday night, following
02:30the announcement of hard-left France unbowed party's leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, that he'll
02:34be running for the presidency in 2027.
02:38The move has sparked discontent among the country's more moderate leftists, who would
02:42rather someone less polarizing than the 74-year-old French politics veteran.
02:48Lawmakers from the leftist Green Party, the Socialists and the after-party have cast doubt
02:53over his chances of winning, given his track record in his three prior attempts in 2012,
02:582017 and 2022.
03:01Mélenchon has failed to reach a runoff vote in all three, but believes his chances this
03:06time round are far higher.
03:08His biggest challenge will be against the far-right national rally, who've been gaining popularity
03:13over the years across France's mainstream.
03:16Speaking to local media, Mélenchon called for a common front with Spain against the war
03:21being waged by the U.S. and Iran, and against Israel in the Middle East.
03:26He also warned that Europe is threatened by a widespread war and a looming economic and social crisis, which he
03:33has previously blamed on capitalism.
03:36Mélenchon expressed confidence in his party's ability to win, saying, quote,
03:41I think we're going to beat them, hands down.
03:44The national rally's candidate will either be embattled 57-year-old Marine Le Pen, widely regarded as the face of
03:51right-wing politics in the country,
03:53or her lieutenant 30-year-old party leader Jordan Bardella.
03:57Their candidate will be selected after a decision is taken by an appeals court in July on Le Pen's eligibility,
04:03after she was handed a political ban over her party's misuse of EU funds.
04:08France's left say they want to create a, quote,
04:11real union excluding France unbowed, and hold a primary to decide on their candidate.
04:19Seven months after the accident involving the Gloria Elevator in Lisbon, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people,
04:26the Gracia Funicula is back in operations.
04:29The reopening comes after repairs were carried out under supervision by Lisbon City Council,
04:35following the derailment and suspension of the Funicula's operations.
04:40A Carris, during these months of closing, did all the possible tests.
04:47The IMT certified the Funicular, and it's perfectly safe.
04:51It's always safe during the last 100 years.
04:54Unfortunately, a catastrophic accident stopped all the Funiculars and ascensiones of the city,
04:58but I believe it will be safe.
05:01I had a route that was done with Gloria and Vica,
05:05and, unfortunately, I was very affected by the accident,
05:08but now, thanks to the certification that the government and the camera,
05:14they returned to safety.
05:16The closure of the Funicular, one of Lisbon's most important transport systems,
05:20caused inconvenience for users.
05:23The Funicular was the one I used the most since I started working here.
05:29A city of the seven columns needs ascensiones of Funiculares,
05:32of mechanical stairs, of other elevators, for the mobility of people.
05:52The Funicular connects Muraria to Grasa and was inaugurated in 2024,
05:5815 years after construction began.
06:01With a capacity to carry up to 14 passengers per trip,
06:05it completes the journey in approximately one and a half minutes.
06:14Farmers in Cyprus are threatening protests due measures taken in response to the outbreak of food and mouth disease in
06:20February.
06:21The newly formed Cyprus Livestock Association said it is ready to take strong action even if financial aid is approved,
06:29unless authorities reconsider their aggressive strategy of containing the epidemic.
06:34The Association argued that European rules also allow for alternative approaches to managing the crisis.
06:42A government spokesperson, however, insisted that the response must strictly follow EU veterinary protocols
06:49and cannot be subject to political pressure.
06:52The measures are based on stamping out of infected and in-contact herds.
06:58EU control measures require the rapid eradication of the virus through the immediate stamping out of infected establishments.
07:05As a result, control measures may also apply to animals that appear healthy or for which test results may not
07:12yet be available in order to prevent further spread of the disease.
07:17The outbreak has so far led to the culling of more than 38,000 sheep and goats, more than 2
07:23,000 cattle and 21,500 pigs.
07:32A new patient arrives at the hospital, a rather unusual patient since it is a wild animal, a very young
07:40female fox found alone without its mother.
07:42My wife has a very small bird who must have two weeks to find the garden of a lady.
07:51Taken in by the teams at the wildlife hospital on the grounds of the National Veterinary School, the young fox
07:57is being examined.
08:00She is not in hypothermia, she is not dehydrated, so she is still stable.
08:06Last year, more than 10,400 wild animals were treated here, including many European mammals such as foxes, deer and
08:15hedgehogs.
08:16The animals often arrive young between April and September after their birth.
08:21The caretakers goal to prepare them for return to the wild.
08:27Once they have reached a weight that we think is suitable, they will be transferred to the rehabilitation centre
08:33until they are really big to pass into an enclos of progressive relaxation.
08:40Uninvasive species are not released.
08:43Between 60 and 80% of the animals that arrive here are victims of human activities such as road collisions.
08:52In a sense, we have a responsibility to take care of these animals who are here, in the majority of
08:58cases, because of us.
09:00So, to offer them a second chance, a kind of care.
09:08The veterinary hospital is managed by the Fauna Alfa Association, which was founded nearly 40 years ago.
09:15It primarily operates thanks to donations and the work of volunteers.
09:26Ron Arad is one of the most important figures in contemporary design, who has never stopped experimenting with form, materials
09:33and their functionalities.
09:36The solo exhibition, Ron Arad, 1992-2026 at the Opera Gallery in Monaco, spans 35 years of the creative journey
09:44of the 75-year-old British Israeli artist, through a series of his iconic works.
09:49I have a studio, and it's like a progressive kindergarten.
09:59You know, I mean, it is driven by curiosity, and we are very privileged that, you know, we can try
10:08everything that we want.
10:09And it's from very little things, from jewelry to skyscrapers.
10:15You know, we designed tall buildings, designed a hospital, a museum, and small objects.
10:23And there's no need to define exactly what we do.
10:28We do things that we are interested in.
10:30And lucky, other people are interested in what we do.
10:32Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to survive.
10:35And the key elements is things that I'm excited to explore, to sketch, to talk about, to model, to develop,
10:43to build.
10:45And to see, like here in this exhibition, the pieces that I made 30 years ago or more.
10:52Known for his radical approach, Arad challenges the boundaries between art, architecture and industrial design.
11:00You know, to design or to make art is always a symbiosis between the will of the artist, the process,
11:08and what the materials will let you do, and what happens.
11:12There's no bad materials, and there's no bad colors.
11:15They're all good, depends what you do with them.
11:17People always ask you, where do you get ideas from?
11:20Ideas are the easiest thing in the world.
11:23There's no shortage of ideas.
11:25Because the difficulty is to know which ideas you give your time to, which ideas you invest in, and which
11:33ideas you just let go.
11:34The exhibition Ron Aran 1992-2026 at the Opera Gallo in Monaco is presented as part of the Principality's Art
11:41Week, and runs until May 28th.
