00:00:27I remember everything.
00:00:32I said, could I have hit him?
00:00:35Did I hit him?
00:00:40And I'm not as clear as if I hadn't been drinking.
00:01:03Hey, can I get a vodka soda?
00:01:10Did it start snowing yet?
00:01:11No, not yet.
00:01:15You know, my dad said I shouldn't be out with a blizzard on the way.
00:01:19Yeah, your dad's probably right.
00:01:23But, hey, I'm glad you did.
00:01:30Hey.
00:01:34Oh.
00:01:46Chris Albert.
00:01:48What?
00:01:48A bunch of them down by the waterfall, he says.
00:01:52And do you want to go?
00:01:55Or we could just go back to your place.
00:01:59Look, it'll be easier to go by, have a drink, than come up with some excuse.
00:02:04All right, let's go.
00:02:05Yeah, we're going?

00:14:45Did they find a pulse?
00:14:48We're on our way to the hospital.
00:14:50We're gonna find out more then.
00:14:55They tried giving him mouth to mouth.
00:14:57That was good.
00:14:58And he's going where they can really take care of him.
00:15:01He's gonna be there in a few minutes.
00:15:05I'll see if you're not leaving.
00:15:07Oh, good.
00:15:11We're right in here.

00:15:48I don't understand why you're taking my blood.
00:15:52Please make a fist.
00:15:53The doctor will be in soon to ask you a few questions.
00:15:56Jesus.
00:16:06Hi, Dad.
00:16:09I got here as quick as I could.
00:16:15They won't let me see him.
00:16:20They, uh...
00:16:22I mean, honey, they...
00:16:24They did what they could do.
00:16:26Did you see him?
00:16:27Is he okay?
00:16:29Sweetheart.
00:16:34He's, uh...
00:16:35He's gone.
00:16:37No, no, no.
00:16:40No!
00:16:44Please don't tell me that.
00:16:46No.
00:16:47No, no.
00:16:48Oh, look at me.
00:16:50They did everything that could have been done.
00:16:58How did it happen?
00:17:00What, I mean...
00:17:01Did I hit him?
00:17:04Did...
00:17:05Could I?
00:17:06Could I have hit him?
00:17:08I don't know.
00:17:24John, where are you?
00:17:28John, pick up.
00:17:29Come on, where are you?
00:17:32Call me.
00:17:34John, would you pick up your phone?
00:17:36Really?
00:17:37You're a goddamn loser, you know that?
00:17:39You are a goddamn loser.
00:17:41Call me back.
00:17:42I goddamn hate you!
00:17:45I goddamn hate you!
00:17:47Do you hear me?
00:17:48I goddamn hate you!
00:18:09Doctor, they put you on this?
00:18:10Lead investigator.
00:18:11What are we looking at?
00:18:13A foot of snow and a vague hope will find anything important underneath?
00:18:17Why can't these things only happen in the spring?
00:18:20What are you doing?
00:18:21That's a solo cup.
00:18:22That's all we got right now.
00:18:24Just trying to beat the snowmobile.
00:18:28You gonna mark that off, you think?
00:18:30Yeah, I'll do it.
00:18:38How you holding up?
00:18:40Not good.
00:18:41No.
00:18:44How can he be gone?
00:18:46How can I never, ever see him again?
00:18:51I need to see the kids.
00:18:53Will you take me?
00:18:54I think that's a good idea.
00:19:25I wasn't expecting.
00:19:33I'm so sorry.
00:19:44Nobody told me that everybody was getting together here.
00:19:49We all wanted to be with the kids.
00:19:52Yeah.
00:19:53Yeah, we do.
00:19:55How are they?
00:19:59I mean, you know what happened.
00:20:01They're taking it pretty hard.
00:20:05Where are they?
00:20:07Upstairs.
00:20:11You saw him?
00:20:14John.
00:20:16Yeah, I saw him.
00:20:19They didn't let me see him.
00:20:21They put me in a different room.
00:20:23What did he...
00:20:26What did he look like?
00:20:28He's pretty banged up.
00:20:31Looked to me like he got hit by a car.
00:20:38Excuse me.
00:20:52What the hell is going on here?
00:20:55They're upset.
00:20:56I'm upset.
00:20:57I loved this man.
00:21:00You know when I spent five nights a week in this house?
00:21:04This is more in my home than it is theirs, and they think they can just come right in.
00:21:08Well, you understand why they want to be here.
00:21:11And I took care of those kids like a mother.
00:21:14I mean, there was...
00:21:16There was like this bond, you know?
00:21:22What the hell is going on here, Dad?
00:21:24Did you see the way that they were looking at me?
00:21:28Everybody's just confused.
00:21:30Nobody knows what happened.
00:21:35Neither do I.
00:21:38But everybody seems to only be looking at me.
00:21:42And you know what?
00:21:44Let them.
00:21:47Because if I did anything in any way, then I will pay my dues.
00:21:54And this is how it should be.
00:21:59I want to know the truth, Dad.
00:22:03Good, bad, or ugly.
00:22:25Hi, Mr. Reid.
00:22:27Yes?
00:22:28I'm Michael Proctor with Massachusetts State Police.
00:22:31I understand your daughter's here?
00:22:33Come in.
00:22:42We got in an argument that day.
00:22:45Sort of an ongoing thing.
00:22:47About what?
00:22:49Just, you know...
00:22:51Relationship stuff.
00:22:52Nothing new.
00:22:54But by the time we met up, we...
00:22:57We were all good.
00:23:00You know, we were...
00:23:01We were kissing and laughing.
00:23:03We were with our friends.
00:23:05And then he got out of the car.
00:23:07And I left.
00:23:09And that was... that was the last time I ever saw him.
00:23:12That was outside the Elbert's house, around...
00:23:1512.30 a.m.?
00:23:17Yeah.
00:23:19Yeah, he...
00:23:20He got out of my car.
00:23:22I had a stomachache, so I just went back to his house.
00:23:25We got your blood results back from the hospital.
00:23:28You had a .093% at 9 this morning.
00:23:32That's still over the legal limit.
00:23:35Guess you guys were tying one on pretty good last night.
00:23:38Everybody was drinking.
00:23:41I mean, I had a couple drinks at McCarthy's.
00:23:44A couple more at the waterfall.
00:23:46I... I felt fine.
00:23:48Fine enough to get behind the wheel.
00:23:50Yeah, well, I got home in one piece.
00:23:53I noticed on the way in you got a busted tailway.
00:23:56Yeah, that, um...
00:23:58That happened this morning.
00:24:00I backed into John's car.
00:24:03And...
00:24:04He's missing.
00:24:06I... I was frantic.
00:24:08Well, since the car is the last place anyone saw John,
00:24:10I'm afraid I'm gonna have to take that in to be investigated.
00:24:14Are you serious?
00:24:16You're gonna take my car?
00:24:19Well...
00:24:20How am I supposed to get to work?
00:24:22Can you work from home?
00:24:24I mean, I'm a financial analyst.
00:24:27I can do that work from home, but I also teach finance at the university.
00:24:31Sorry, the car is evidence.
00:24:32I'm afraid where else I can have to ask for your phone.
00:24:35What?
00:24:37What?
00:24:53I think I'm gonna need a lawyer.
00:24:58So, the first thing that we can expect, most likely, is a no-contact order.
00:25:03No contact?
00:25:05What does that even...
00:25:07With who?
00:25:08With anyone in John's family.
00:25:12And I'm afraid that means that you won't be able to attend John's funeral.
00:25:16What?
00:25:18No contact.
00:25:19With his family at all.
00:25:20I'm really sorry.
00:25:22They all have their minds made up.
00:25:25You know, three days ago, I was like family to them.
00:25:28And all of a sudden, no contact?
00:25:31I mean, is that even necessary?
00:25:33No one's speaking to me anyway.
00:25:34They're almost certainly gonna put a warrant out for your arrest.
00:25:38My arrest?
00:25:39I didn't do anything. This is insane.
00:25:51Look, that night...
00:25:57I had been drinking.
00:26:02It was late.
00:26:05I mean, I don't know what could have happened.
00:26:12Did he try to get to me while I was leaving and I just didn't- I didn't know it?
00:26:17I mean, I always have the music blasting.
00:26:19It was snowing, I had the wipers going, I had the heater blasting.
00:26:23I mean...
00:26:26What if...
00:26:29I don't even know.
00:26:30What if I...
00:26:32Ran over his foot?
00:26:34Or...
00:26:35What if I...
00:26:36I clipped him in the knee and he just- he just passed out?
00:26:39Well, then you would have some element of culpability.
00:26:43They took your phone.
00:26:45They took your car.
00:26:48You need to prepare yourself.
00:26:51How is anybody supposed to prepare themselves for something like this?
00:26:55You can also expect some fairly invasive discovery.
00:26:58Subpoenas for your texts, your emails, your financial records.
00:27:03I'll talk to the DA and arrange for you to voluntarily surrender.
00:27:08Everybody so damn sure.
00:27:10Burned me at the stake already.
00:27:12Listen, Karen.
00:27:15I'm gonna be with you.
00:27:16For the whole thing.
00:27:18I've been practicing law for 30 plus years.
00:27:22They're gonna take your picture.
00:27:24They'll take your prints.
00:27:25You post bail, you go home.
00:27:28One.
00:27:31One.
00:27:32You can be with me.
00:27:32You've got it over here.
00:27:34I think closer to the room.
00:27:36Yes.
00:27:3748-25-10.
00:27:39I'll check that over there.
00:27:40Yeah, yeah, I'll grab my arm there.
00:27:41Very good.
00:27:42They do!
00:27:46Yeah.
00:27:48Yeah?
00:27:49Good morning.
00:27:49How are you waiting for this?
00:27:52Yeah.
00:27:54Bye, bye.
00:28:09Just behind me is the location of the tragic death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe,
00:28:15where investigations have intensified.
00:28:26More taillight pieces over here.
00:28:33Family friends and fellow officers gathered today at the St. Francis of Assisi Church in
00:28:37Braintree for the funeral of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe.
00:28:41O'Keefe was pronounced dead Saturday in the early morning hours after being found in the
00:28:45snow outside a home in Canton.
00:28:47His brother Paul remembered John as someone who showed what determination could be.
00:28:52Moving forward, I will do my best to continue my brother's legacy of caring and supporting
00:28:58others, even though I know I can never come close to the way he did.
00:29:03Nor can I come close to expressing the admiration I have for John, who after our sister Christy
00:29:11died, took her two children into his home to raise as his.
00:29:17But I can repeat the same words that John used at Christy's funeral.
00:29:25We'll take it from here.
00:29:27John O'Keefe will be laid to rest at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.
00:29:34David, hi.
00:29:36Hey, listen, I've got some bad news.
00:29:38Terrific.
00:29:39I talked to the D.A. and they're not going for it.
00:29:42They won't let you voluntarily surrender.
00:29:45What?
00:29:47Why?
00:29:48Well, they're not telling me anything, but the Boston cop is dead.
00:29:52We knew there was a heightened sense of importance to it.
00:29:55They're playing their cards very close.
00:29:57So they're insisting on arresting me.
00:30:01David, how am I supposed to go to jail?
00:30:02I mean, I've got Crohn's, I've got MS, I've got all these meds I have to take.
00:30:07Okay, you can bring them with you.
00:30:11All right, when?
00:30:13Well, that's why I'm calling.
00:30:16Are you home?
00:30:17Yeah.
00:30:17Yeah.
00:30:19Yeah.
00:30:28Yeah.
00:30:58Okay.
00:30:59Just like we talked about.
00:31:11David, I have to move.
00:31:12Okay.
00:31:15Aaron Reed, you have the right to remain silent.
00:31:19Anything you say can be used against you in a heart of law.
00:31:25You cannot afford an attorney.
00:31:26One will be provided to you by the state.
00:31:42Police have arrested a Mansfield woman in connection with the death of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe,
00:31:48who was found in a snowbank on a Canton street over the weekend.
00:31:54Investigators allege that Reed struck O'Keefe with her black Lexus SUV
00:31:59and left him to die in the snow outside a Canton home in the frigid blizzard conditions.
00:32:06Manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision causing death.
00:32:11Do you understand these charges?
00:32:13Yeah.
00:32:14This arrest marks the first major development in the investigation into O'Keefe's death,
00:32:19which shocked the local law enforcement community.
00:32:22and that was the charge of themail.
00:32:37That's the result of the warrant and a violation of Medina and a zwei-a-a-a-a-a-a
00:32:37-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a
00:32:37-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a.
00:32:42I don't know.
00:33:31I don't know.
00:33:49All right, Chris Albert.
00:33:53A bunch of them down by the waterfall.
00:33:55Can we just hang here?
00:33:56Do you want to go?
00:33:57No.
00:34:00Come on, look at me.
00:34:01Look at my eyes.
00:34:02Four shots.
00:34:03Here we go.
00:34:04All right.
00:34:05You guys in?
00:34:07Yours.
00:34:07Here we go.
00:34:08Here we go.
00:34:10Fabulous.
00:34:12Cheers.
00:34:14Just go and say hi.
00:34:15Look, it'll be easier to go by, have a drink, and come up with some excuse.
00:34:19You're fine.
00:34:20Let's go.
00:34:20Yeah, with one?
00:34:21Yeah, let's go.
00:34:22Hey, St. John.
00:34:23Johnny.
00:34:24Hey.
00:34:25Who invited these losers?
00:34:27Hey, plain new brother.
00:34:29Hey, what are you pricks drinking?
00:34:30Whatever you pricks are buying.
00:34:32Kiss that mouth?
00:34:33Hey.
00:34:34That's the best way I know to shut her up.
00:34:36Come on.
00:34:40We're good, right?
00:34:42You in?
00:34:43No.
00:34:43You in?
00:34:44Uh, hey.
00:34:46Let's go back to my place.
00:34:48Don't forget to let those guys know.
00:34:49Oh, yeah.
00:34:50I'll let them know.
00:34:51Hey.
00:34:52We're all going back to Brian's place.
00:34:53You coming?
00:34:55Uh, yeah.
00:34:56Yeah.
00:34:59Really?
00:35:00What?
00:35:01Well, it's after midnight.
00:35:02Can't we just go back to your house?
00:35:03You and me?
00:35:05One drink.
00:35:06Come on, we'll be a minute.
00:35:07We're having a good time.
00:35:08All right.
00:35:09Are you coming?
00:35:19Hey.
00:35:21Thank God.
00:35:22You have to get me out of this cell.
00:35:24Well, they're going to be here in a minute to bring you over to your arraignment.
00:35:26Well, are they going to let me get cleaned up a bit?
00:35:29I mean, look at me.
00:35:31No one's going to care about that.
00:35:33Listen, I've been going through your arrest record, and there are a few things that we're
00:35:37going to need to address going forward.
00:35:38What are they saying?
00:35:39Well, first, your blood alcohol level that morning was .09.
00:35:44Yeah, I already know that.
00:35:46What else?
00:35:48Okay.
00:35:48Evidence.
00:35:49There were pieces of a broken taillight close to John's body, consistent with the broken
00:35:54taillight of your Lexus SUV.
00:35:55There were pieces of broken glass embedded in your bumper that they say came from a glass
00:36:01that John took from the waterfall.
00:36:03There were scratches, dents, and chipped paint all around that same back area of your car.
00:36:09Shit.
00:36:09Basically, they are saying that you drove to the Alberts' house, John got out, you backed
00:36:14up, slamming into him.
00:36:15After which you drove to his place where you fell asleep, leaving him, laying there, overnight,
00:36:22to freeze to death.
00:36:26He got out of the car.
00:36:29I watched him head over to the house.
00:36:32That was the last time I ever saw him.
00:36:34Then they have people on the scene that morning that swear that they heard you say, I hit him,
00:36:41I hit him, I hit him.
00:36:43David.
00:36:45I never said those words.
00:36:47Ever.
00:36:48There are people on the scene that morning that say you did.
00:36:50There are people on the scene that night.
00:37:03What the hell?
00:37:05Am I news now?
00:37:17How does the defendant plead?
00:37:19Not guilty, Your Honor.
00:37:23The court sets bail in the amount of $50,000
00:37:26and reiterates Ms. Reif that you will order
00:37:29to stay away from the residence
00:37:30and have no contact.
00:37:42Karen Reif, the girlfriend of John O'Keefe,
00:37:46was released on bail today,
00:37:48shortly after she appeared in court
00:37:50to face charges related to his death.
00:37:53She's pleaded not guilty to manslaughter
00:37:56motor-vehicular homicide
00:37:57and leaving the scene of a collision causing death.
00:38:01The victim, Officer John O'Keefe, 46,
00:38:04was a 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department.
00:38:08Karen Reif has denied all the allegations
00:38:11and maintains her innocence.
00:38:15There goes my health insurance.
00:38:17You know, I have surgery follow-ups.
00:38:20How am I supposed to pay for my meds
00:38:21if I don't have a job?
00:38:23We'll figure it out.
00:38:25You know you always say that.
00:38:27But how?
00:38:28How are we going to figure it out?
00:38:31Look, you're not going to be alone through this.
00:38:34I'm not at work anymore.
00:38:36I can be there for you through the whole thing.
00:38:39Yeah, but you love your job.
00:38:40Not more than I love you.
00:38:43No.
00:38:45I'm going to be put in the poorhouse
00:38:48for something I didn't do, Dad.
00:38:50I mean, my God.
00:38:51I had to cash out my 401k.
00:38:54Probably going to have to sell this house.
00:38:57Honey, you've got your mom.
00:38:59You've got me.
00:39:00We're totally behind you,
00:39:02and we're going to help whatever it takes.
00:39:05But how?
00:39:08By doing whatever we need to do.
00:39:12This fight, it's not just you.
00:39:15It's us, too.
00:39:16And we're not going to stop until we make this right.
00:39:23It just feels like this whole town is turning on me.
00:39:29They're telling the cops I said I hit them.
00:39:32Why?
00:39:33Why would I say that?
00:39:35I thought these people were supposed to be my friends.
00:40:02What?
00:40:08I don't know what you're talking about.
00:40:20What?
00:40:21What now?
00:40:22I have an arrest warrant.
00:40:23Again?
00:40:24Who am I supposed to have killed now?
00:40:26Same person.
00:40:27Only the charges have been up for manslaughter
00:40:29to second-degree murder.
00:40:30Can I at least get some normal shoes on
00:40:32so that I don't have to go on TV looking like this?
00:40:35I don't even have underwear on.
00:40:37Can I at least go get some pants?
00:40:38Your parents can come back and retrieve everything.
00:40:43I just...
00:40:43I don't want to be on Channel 4 and life with bandwidths.
00:40:46I wouldn't be worried about the news right now.
00:40:48See how she is?
00:40:49She's more concerned with how she looks on TV.
00:40:52Yeah, okay.
00:40:54Manslaughter, a second-degree murder.
00:40:56What's... what's the difference?
00:40:59Life in prison.
00:41:10I mean, that's the problem with these people.
00:41:12Everything is, we're all gonna die
00:41:14if we don't get rid of plastic bags out of supermarkets,
00:41:17and no more straws.
00:41:18Everything is, we're all gonna die.
00:41:21Anyway, that's my take.
00:41:22For those of you just joining or here for the first time,
00:41:25I'm your fearless host, Turtle Boy.
00:41:27Let's take a call.
00:41:28Hey, Steve from Southie, what's on your mind?
00:41:31Hey, man.
00:41:32You been following this Karen Reed case?
00:41:34Sounds like something right up your alley.
00:41:36Yeah, a woman who hit her cop boyfriend with her car?
00:41:38Yeah, what's your take on that?
00:41:39Well, it sucks, huh?
00:41:40You know, I mean, you got this woman who's got it all together,
00:41:43and, um, she just got drunk one night
00:41:45and appears to have not even known that she backed this guy over.
00:41:48I mean, I'm sure she didn't mean to kill him,
00:41:49and I'm sure it's eating her up inside.
00:41:51Well, it seems like a story you should cover.
00:41:53I mean, uh, it's sad, yeah, but I don't know if there's a story there.
00:41:57You know, I'm a back-the-blue guy,
00:41:59so, uh, I don't really have a strong opinion on it.
00:42:01It's a tragedy.
00:42:03Yeah, it's a real tragedy for her.
00:42:04She's out on bail now, but they're charging her with murder.
00:42:08Murder?
00:42:10Hold on a sec.
00:42:42Look at this.
00:42:44Proctor knows everybody.
00:42:46He's the lead investigator on this case,
00:42:48and I'm there scrolling through all these pictures,
00:42:50and it's like he pretty much knows everybody
00:42:52who was in that house that night.
00:42:54Everyone.
00:42:55Well, not everyone,
00:42:57but isn't it kind of a conflict of interest?
00:43:03John's a cop.
00:43:05They're not gonna let this go.
00:43:07And now it's my ass that's on the line.
00:43:12We're gonna need a bigger team.
00:43:43are they kidding?
00:43:45these injuries are from a car hitting them that's their story i'm not buying it maybe someone just
00:43:51needed a scapegoat yeah that's why i'm here i mean come on you mean to tell me they're not seeing
00:43:57what we're seeing exactly our question and did anybody else have their vehicle and cell phone
00:44:02taken from them i mean it's like i was the only suspect well you're the odd one out they're
00:44:08circling their wagons everybody and his mother putting only you on the chopping block this is
00:44:14intentional this slow drip of discovery from the prosecution it's well they're certainly taking
00:44:19their time it's been months they've got a game plan yeah well they're on a fishing expedition
00:44:24trying to fit the evidence to the narrative they already decided on you have a fundamental right
00:44:29to see the evidence against you and they're taking their sweet time about it they didn't waste any
00:44:33time taking my car or my phone did they let's just drill down on this for just 10 seconds in
00:44:39terms of
00:44:39the taillight material uh the glass the plastic john's shirt the jeans the belt the shoes the
00:44:44underwear the hat whatever well none of it was booked into evidence until march 14th 2022 so they
00:44:51just sat on it for a month and a half what the hell is that standard no no no we
00:44:55don't know whose
00:44:56possession they were in i mean where were the circumstances were they properly handled we have
00:45:00no guarantee they weren't compromised holy shit turtle riders this is story of the century stuff i mean
00:45:06my job is currently on the floor remember the headlines that a boston police officer was backed
00:45:11over by his girlfriend in a snowstorm after a fight on a night they were both drinking that was a
00:45:16narrative that was put out there but i have been getting more and more information on this and it's
00:45:19outrageous and what we know for damn sure is she did not run him over no karen reed is a
00:45:25completely
00:45:25innocent woman he is something else we couldn't get better pr if we were paying him
00:45:31it's because he's a 100 sincere a force to be reckoned with where to believe that karen was at
00:45:37least 62 feet away before she decided to gun it in reverse and john just stood there right just
00:45:44waited to get run over is he dead karen is he dead he's dead i didn't hear you say it
00:45:55at all
00:45:56if i was running around saying i hit him i hit him you'd think it would be picked up by
00:46:00the dash
00:46:01cam mics you'd also be arrested on the spot i mean we can clearly hear you say he's dead he's
00:46:07dead
00:46:07but not i hit him yeah you don't hear it because i never said it it's all an elaborate plot
00:46:12to frame
00:46:13karen reed now when i believe in something i don't just say oh here's the facts no i go out
00:46:18and i
00:46:18hold protests and i'm looking for other people to do the same
00:46:29well we always knew the key to this case was seeing people's phones you can ask all the
00:46:35questions you want but the hard data that is where you find the really critical stuff in the 21st
00:46:41century proctor's phone records are coming in very soon or i'm going to be breathing fire
00:46:46uh kerry roberts and jen mccabe's confirmed the timing of those calls you made to them that
00:46:52morning we have records of other investigators we have the 911 records
00:46:58well that can't be right did jen mccabe make a google search at 227 that morning
00:47:05how long to die in cold actually she typed in hos but but it's
00:47:13it's clear what she meant
00:47:27karen reed had nothing to do with it this is an innocent woman okay she is the victim of a
00:47:34conspiracy we won't rest until we get to the bottom of exactly who killed john o'keefe
00:47:38not only karen reed deserves this john o'keefe deserves this and has deserved this from moment
00:47:44one it feels like we're the only ones who are fighting for the truth of what happened to john
00:47:50o'keefe and me and my family and my attorneys we've marshaled every resource to get to the truth
00:48:00we know who spearheaded it you all know i tried to save his life at 6 a.m in the
00:48:07morning i was covered
00:48:08in his blood why are we so angry with john that late
00:48:16welcome turbo riders there are at least 100 to 200 people here with me on the rolling rally
00:48:22and we are peacefully protesting the murder of john o'keefe and the framing of an innocent woman
00:48:29is a beautiful day here for some peaceful protesting i'll tell you that much there will
00:48:34be no rioting no looting nothing like that we are peacefully protesting the murder of the adopted
00:48:42father of two and a boston police officer named john o'keefe we are also protesting on behalf of karen
00:49:01karen reed
00:49:03the scene outside the courthouse here is unreal hundreds of people here you would think are waiting
00:49:08for a movie star but the focus of their attention is actually former college professor karen reed
00:49:21okay we're ready for opening statements the defendant karen reed struck mr o'keefe with her car
00:49:28knocking him onto the ground striking his head and leaving him lying there to die in a blizzard
00:49:36karen reed was framed her car never struck john o'keefe
00:49:43she did not cause his death and that means that somebody else did
00:50:11hey blast from the past there he is in person damn look at you

01:01:34five
01:01:35six
01:01:37seven to seven drinks in total
01:01:39at mccarthy's
01:01:40before the defendant moved onto the waterfall where she kept drinking
01:01:45and then
01:01:46she got behind the wheel
01:01:48and drove to 34 fairview with john o'keefe
01:02:10i don't think anybody would be paying attention when i said my favorite color was pink
01:02:20i'm handing you a document do you recognize it
01:02:24yes
01:02:25and what do you recognize it to be
01:02:29it's a text message thread labeled proctor's friends
01:02:34so these all came from me
01:02:35from all accounts he didn't do anything wrong
01:02:38she's a whack job
01:02:40see you
01:02:42objection
01:02:43so don't spell it
01:02:45you have to
01:02:46this is
01:02:47these are your words
01:02:49trooper proctor
01:02:50yes john
01:02:52so go ahead and say them
01:02:55she's a whack job
01:02:59she's a babe
01:03:01weird follower of accent though
01:03:03no ass
01:03:04these are unprofessional comments
01:03:06but they absolutely do not detract from the integrity of the investigation
01:03:10or the facts and the evidence of it
01:03:13sir
01:03:15how did you refer to miss reed in your text exchange when you informed them that you were going through
01:03:20her phone
01:03:21i used regrettable language
01:03:23i said that i was going through his retarded client's phone
01:03:27and who were you referring to as retarded
01:03:30miss reed
01:03:30so the person that you were investigating you referred to to your bosses as retarded correct
01:03:35again poor language on my part
01:03:37poor language is one way to put it
01:03:38completely offensive is another way to put it
01:03:40then what did you write after you talked about going through her phone
01:03:46no nudes so far
01:03:47so you were looking for naked photographs of miss reed correct
01:03:51no not correct
01:03:52let me ask you a question
01:03:53have you ever looked for naked photographs of male suspects you were investigating
01:03:58i don't look for naked photos on anyone's phones
01:04:01what you
01:04:02you just said you were looking for nudes of miss reed
01:04:04like i said mr jackson it was
01:04:07an inappropriate joke
01:04:08so
01:04:09you weren't so much objectively investigating karen reed
01:04:12as objectifying correct
01:04:16before you even went into the house having interviewed only three folks
01:04:19you had this case nice and wrapped up didn't you
01:04:22yes
01:04:23based on the evidence uncovered by my office that day
01:04:26the one shoe discovered at the scene
01:04:29the one shoe at the hospital
01:04:30mr o'keefe's injuries
01:04:32the broken tailpiece underneath the snow
01:04:34no to the doctor i didn't ask for your explanation
01:04:37i asked
01:04:38did you in your mind have this case wrapped up
01:04:42was it cut and dry in your mind
01:04:44yes
01:04:45then you indicated we're going to put serious charges on the girl who were you referring to as the girl
01:04:51the defendant
01:04:52the way you were going to make it cut and dry
01:04:55cut and dry right
01:04:55pretty simple just pin it on the girl
01:04:58absolutely not
01:04:59then what did you write
01:05:04she's screwed
01:05:05she's screwed
01:05:06you decided
01:05:08individually trooper proctor
01:05:10that you were not only going to put it on the girl
01:05:13you decided
01:05:14you were going to make sure this case was cut and dry
01:05:16and the way you were going to do it
01:05:18is to make sure she's screwed
01:05:20i mean that's what you were saying
01:05:21no no absolutely not
01:05:23you responded to a text message from your sister
01:05:26hopefully she kills herself
01:05:27correct
01:05:29it was a figure of speech
01:05:30you believed trooper proctor
01:05:32that your life would be much easier
01:05:34if karen reed was just dead
01:05:36no no um
01:05:38like i said it was a figure of speech
01:05:40my emotions got the best of me
01:05:41based on you know
01:05:42the fact that miss reed
01:05:43hit mr o'keefe with her vehicle
01:05:45and left him to die
01:05:46on the side of the road
01:05:47so my emotions got the best of me
01:05:49with that figure of speech
01:05:51well let's talk about that figure of speech
01:05:54during the course of your investigation
01:05:56your figures of speech include the following
01:06:00she's a bitch
01:06:01a whack job
01:06:02a retard
01:06:03no ass
01:06:05she's screwed
01:06:06according to you
01:06:07and screw her
01:06:09correct
01:06:10correct
01:06:14do you agree
01:06:15trooper proctor
01:06:16that you have dehumanized
01:06:18karen reed
01:06:19during the course of your investigation
01:06:20with comments and words like this
01:06:23i would say that
01:06:26based off of that language
01:06:30um
01:06:32yes
01:06:33because you were going to make sure
01:06:34this case was cut and dry
01:06:36those were your words right
01:06:38to pin it on the girl
01:06:41shame on you sir
01:06:42objection
01:06:44at the waterfall it seemed like they were quite lovey-dovey
01:06:48at 12 37 08 a.m. the defendant calls john and voicemail number one is left
01:06:53mrs gilman would you kindly play the voicemail for 12 37 08
01:06:59you know what john
01:07:00i goddamn hate you
01:07:02do you hear me
01:07:04i goddamn hate you
01:07:06at 11 17 37 a.m. the defendant calls john this is when voicemail six is left with voice
01:07:12john do you hear me
01:07:13you are screwing another girl
01:07:17what if anything did your brother mention to you as far as reasons for an argument or points of contention
01:07:25he didn't like it if you know she spent a lot of money in the kids for gifts
01:07:30i know there was some arguments about what she fed him whether it was dunkin donuts or what have you
01:07:35things along those lines
01:07:37and what if any occasions uh as far as their arguments or anything like that
01:07:44did you observe personally yourself
01:07:47eyewitnessed uh so they had rented a house down in cape cod
01:07:52eyewitnessed you know one intense fight between the two of them
01:07:57um it was a verbal argument
01:07:59you know typical couples fighting
01:08:02there was alcohol uh involved
01:08:06i recall her complaining that he wasn't nice to you know something to that effect
01:08:11i was kind of the referee in that entire situation
01:08:15when you make reference to the alcohol involved was that one or both
01:08:19uh for both
01:08:21for both your brother and the defendant
01:08:25correct
01:08:27do you think it's standard practice to borrow solo cups from a neighbor to gather evidence
01:08:31of course not
01:08:34nothing about this scene was standard
01:08:37so after 8 a.m. the crime scene was completely open unsecured available to anybody
01:08:43correct
01:08:48so your expert testimony is that john o'keefe was hit by the suv and flew 30 feet
01:08:55would you define flying as being literally in the air the whole time or
01:08:59i don't know you tell me you're the expert
01:09:01well he was when we say projected we mean he gets projected and then they
01:09:09they usually have a landing phase and then they land or they usually roll or
01:09:14tumble to final rest
01:09:18if struck by a vehicle going 24 miles per hour i'd expect to see fractures and deep contusions
01:09:24not just the abrasions found on the victim's arm
01:09:26red plastic found in the debris scraped from john o'keefe's clothing were a match to the
01:09:31defendant's damaged taillight
01:09:32the victim's injuries don't look remotely consistent with being struck by a vehicle
01:09:37we are here for justice for john o'keefe and justice for karen reed because there is no justice
01:09:44for john o'keefe without justice for karen reed
01:09:51as the snow melted more and more pieces of taillight from the defendant's vehicle were uncovered at the
01:09:56scene sergeant were you able to see the video okay uh based on the motion of the shot with the
01:10:01snow falling it appears that there is movement but uh the video speaks for itself
01:10:07oh on the ground around the rear of mr o'keefe's parked vehicle what if any red pieces or anything
01:10:13do you observe uh nothing was observed john never went in the house it's not a story it's a fact
01:10:22uh mr o'keefe's apple health data indicated he climbed up or down three flights of stairs between
01:10:2812 21 and 12 24. i cross-referenced mr o'keefe's phone and his apple watch and the
01:10:35data indicate he was still half a mile away from 34 fairview at 12 24. as i left i noticed
01:10:42something
01:10:42out of the ordinary like a black blob on the ground by the flagpole it was pretty dark and snowy
01:10:52i was also intoxicated drinking
01:10:59at 227 a.m you made a google search how long to die in the cold correct except you made
01:11:05a mistake
01:11:05and typed hos how long to die in cold i made that search but i made it in the morning
01:11:11after 6 a.m
01:11:12at your client's request i opened up a search tab at that time yes but i was looking at a
01:11:18basketball
01:11:18team for my daughter i didn't make that search until right after we found john karen screamed
01:11:23at me to look it up and my hands were shaking karen was saying google hypothermia our analysis
01:11:29showed that miss mccabe's searches for how long to die in the cold were in fact conducted at 6 23
01:11:35and 6 24 a.m miss mccabe the records show you made that search at 227 a.m i made
01:11:41that search after
01:11:426 a.m at your client's request she kept saying i hit him i hit him oh my god i
01:11:48hit him
01:11:49i hit him no i didn't hear that part so you're telling me you actually heard what she said
01:11:54in a snowstorm i can tell you today with 100 clarity she said i hit him i hit him i
01:12:00hit him
01:12:00mr lawgren when you drove your snowplow past 34 fairview that night how much of the front lawn area
01:12:08did your headlights illuminate the entire front lawn and at that hour at 2 45 in the morning
01:12:15did you see anything in that front lawn area near the flagpole i saw nothing a body
01:12:26no no further questions
01:12:31thanks for joining us i'm chris tanaka with a wbc news update after weeks of testimony and dozens
01:12:37of witnesses closing arguments finally set today in the karen reid murder trial
01:12:45last day in court no more what's next what witness is next what questions are you going to be asking
01:12:53them i'm glad that part's over with you're looking at the positive that's good
01:13:01yeah i woke up this morning and it just it felt weird it felt weird not knowing where i'm going
01:13:07to
01:13:07sleep tonight i could be all alone in prison
01:13:21just look the other way that's what they want that's what they're counting on
01:13:30but the uncanny fact is that you have been lied to in this courtroom and your job is to never
01:13:37ever
01:13:37look the other way your singular duty is to stare down the evidence and do it unflinchingly and do
01:13:45it unwaveringly you are the last line of defense between karen reid and the tyranny of injustice
01:13:54how do we get here
01:13:58first you build a tall blue wall but most importantly
01:14:04you pick your patsy and you pin it on the girl
01:14:08question is what will you do at this moment
01:14:12ignore the the lies and the manipulations and the misogyny and the bias the lack of evidence would
01:14:18you ever do that could you ever do that or will you say with your verdict i see the truth
01:14:27ladies and gentlemen karen reid is innocent
01:14:32do justice and find her not guilty
01:14:41i hit him i hit him i hit him those were the words of the defendant this is all my
01:14:49fault i did this
01:14:50those were the words that came from the defendant's mouth on january 29th while john o'keefe
01:14:57lay dying on the front lawn of 34 fairview road where the defendant had left him after striking him
01:15:04with her vehicle several hours before and then left him there freezing in blizzard moments later the
01:15:11defendant leaves that voicemail seething with rage screaming john i hate you john i'm here with your
01:15:18kids nobody knows where you are only somebody did know where mr o'keefe was the defendant knew exactly
01:15:24where he was because she had driven him there she struck him there and she left him there to die
01:15:31in the morning she doesn't ask is he okay is he gonna be okay how is he any sort of
01:15:37questions about
01:15:38his medical condition just is he dead over and over and over again facts are stubborn things and whatever
01:15:47may be our wishes our inclinations or the dictates of our passions they cannot alter the state of the
01:15:56facts and of the evidence and what the facts and the evidence demonstrate here is that the defendant
01:16:05drover carl reverse struck mr o'keefe causing those catastrophic brain injuries leaving him incapacitated
01:16:14and freezing to death
01:16:25you could really sense the anxiety from karen reid's supporters which is a different story from yesterday
01:16:31and the day before when they were excited and confident today many of them told me they are nervous
01:16:37and expected a verdict by now i should have listened to you i shouldn't have gone out that night why
01:16:45did i go out that night
01:16:55look i know this has been hell but i can't tell you how proud i am of you
01:17:03there's so many women that identify with you because they know what it's like to be objectified dehumanized
01:17:11victimized with you they see strength and the courage to fight back
01:17:24it's hard to describe if you're not standing right here at the courthouse as a jury goes into its fifth
01:17:31day of deliberation the feeling in the air is just different
01:17:39i'll take him this trial okay you can keep me in limbo for 10 years just just please oh god
01:17:48please let me
01:17:49go home tonight karen hey just go back to the evidence obviously we're we were all hoping for a
01:17:58faster quicker verdict but i can't imagine 12 jurors would ever say you're guilty of anything
01:18:09i mean what if they don't even let me hug my father before they put me in handcuffs
01:18:17it's not gonna happen
01:18:22karen
01:18:24it's amazing that it took you until now to break down like that
01:18:30i mean that just speaks to your incredible strength
01:18:46verdict
01:18:50despite our rigorous efforts we continue to find ourselves at an impasse
01:18:55to continue to deliberate would be futile and only serve to force us to compromise these deeply held
01:19:01beliefs i'm not going to do that to you folks your service here is complete i'm declaring a mistrial in
01:19:09this case thank you so much for your service okay
01:19:28this is what happens when you bring
01:19:43false charges to an innocent person
01:19:47no matter how long it takes no matter how long they keep trying we will not stop fighting
01:19:54we have no quit
01:20:03you're attacking the family of an innocent man who was killed what's the matter with you people
01:20:08look at them
01:20:09look at them it's like the super bowl mardi gras days of our lives all rolled into one
01:20:13you think these people care what the truth is they're just here to watch the karen reed show
01:20:20a mistrial is not justice i don't think anybody thinks it is
01:20:23yeah well it's better than going to jail i guess
01:20:26well justice is what we need and justice is not you walking out of that courtroom it's you not being
01:20:33charged anymore yeah well i'd rather go to jail before i plea out i will never give them that way
01:20:42hey dad no i didn't what's going on
01:20:50we're gonna retry it
01:20:55but how can the defense lie like that no way she did more evidence i see unless i believe
01:21:01closing arguments today in the retrial of the karen reed murder case it's been a year since her
01:21:06first trial do you think she'll get an acquittal this go-round no doubt in my mind karen reed is
01:21:10innocent there was no collision there was no collision there was no collision stare down injustice
01:21:20you are the last line of defense between an innocent woman and a system that tried mightily
01:21:28to bury the truth the commonwealth has to prove every charge beyond a reasonable doubt to an
01:21:35unshakable moral certainty no officer ever heard karen reed say i hit him it's not in a single police
01:21:41report nowhere the fact is there was no collision a car didn't kill john o'keefe and karen reed is
01:21:49an
01:21:49innocent woman find karen reed not guilty not guilty not guilty
01:21:58karen reed was drunk she hit him and she left him to die john didn't go into any house
01:22:05he couldn't his phone never moved again she leaves him a voicemail nobody knows where you are
01:22:11panic drunken denial is setting in they were fighting she got drunk she hit him she left
01:22:20him to die simple as that john o'keefe was murdered by karen reed
01:22:27on day four of jury deliberations in the retrial of karen reed the mood here is of increasing
01:22:34concern that this trial may end up just like the last one with a mistrial
01:23:05another one with a mistrial of karen reed everybody
01:23:08that the jury knocked on the door indicating that they had a verdict, but shortly thereafter
01:23:12they knocked again and said that they do not have a verdict. So I would ask everyone, remain
01:23:21in the building until the end of the day.
01:23:34We're close. It's coming.
01:24:03Mr. Foreman, members of the jury, have you agreed upon a verdict?
01:24:08Yes.
01:24:09Mr. Foreman, in the matter of murder in the second degree, what say you?
01:24:14Not guilty.
01:24:17Manslaughter while operating under the influence, what say you?
01:24:21Not guilty.
01:24:28Operating under the influence of liquor by operating a motor vehicle, so say you, Mr. Foreman?
01:24:33Guilty.
01:24:36Leaving the scene after an accident resulting in death.
01:24:39Not guilty or guilty?
01:24:47Not guilty.
01:25:05Honestly, it was the most emotional experience I've ever been part of. Uh, I feel I would
01:25:10disrespecting everything our founding fathers risk their lives for if i wasn't out there fighting for
01:25:15karen in a statement john o'keefe's family called the verdict a devastating miscarriage of justice
01:25:23you know i've been preparing for this for a long time both the worst and the best
01:25:26then i'm i'm i'm so happy that it turned out to invest
01:25:49i just want to say two things
01:25:52number one is i couldn't be standing here today if it wasn't for these amazing supporters
01:25:59who've supported me and my team financially and more importantly emotionally for almost four years
01:26:09and the second thing i want to say is that no one has fought harder for justice for john o
01:26:15'keefe
01:26:15than i have than i have and my team thank you thank you
