Chipper Jones joins The Steakhouse and breaks down the mechanical tweak that has Matt Olson playing like an MVP candidate this season.
Transcript
00:00and chipper good morning thanks for being with us guys how are you we're awesome in a minute
00:06we miss you hey uh what was your interaction with ted turner over the years um obviously
00:12owner of the braves so you came up and had a lot of years with him yeah um not much
00:20he didn't come
00:21around uh he'd come around maybe once or twice a season and then obviously you know he and jane
00:29were a mainstay at a bunch of the uh a bunch of the playoff games and such but um yeah
00:38it was uh
00:39he'd come in every once in a while and make the guys laugh i think one time he came in
00:44and
00:44he shook hands with uh keith lockhart and looked him dead in the eye and said oh i guess we're
00:51we're signing old people now and uh then you know of course i was keith with my locker mate and
00:59he
01:00finishes and shakes my hand and says hey chips stay out of hooters you know things like no i mean
01:06it
01:06was geez louise man he did not care he was he did not did not care at all yeah you
01:15got him on a uh
01:16on you know he was married in the back end of his deal because when he owned the falc when
01:21he
01:21owned the tv stations um leeman bennett coach of the falcons was like dude this guy was all over
01:27atlanta in the tv studios partying like crazy the whole deal a larger than life personality but it
01:33sounds like he calmed down a little bit by the time um what do you remember about those playoff
01:37i mean atlanta was because did you grow up watching tbs atlanta was not only the most recognized team but
01:44then you guys get so good in the 90s it was like the perfect storm ted jane playoffs world series
01:50tbs the whole thing yeah um i grew up in the sticks i had uh channels two six and nine
01:58abc nbc cbs so i didn't i didn't really i had to go over to somebody's house yeah you didn't
02:03have
02:03cable yeah i didn't i had to go over to somebody's house to to watch that but uh obviously you
02:10know
02:10growing up knew who uh ryan sonberg and bruce suger were in chicago and obviously uh dale murphy bob
02:18horner glenn hubbard you know in uh you know on tbs so um yeah it was uh he you know
02:27he put he put
02:28atlanta on the map i mean we i don't know how big atlanta really was until you know tbs and
02:36cnn and
02:38and ted turner started doing his thing here in the in the great city of atlanta are you ever surprised
02:44and i don't know you know you got a lot of kids and a lot going on so i don't
02:47think you're traveling
02:48like to you know the himalayas anytime soon but are you ever surprised where you're recognized
02:54or the obscurity of places um where people recognize you and how much more comfortable
03:00have you gotten over the years with that celebrity as opposed to maybe earlier in your career
03:06it kind of it kind of shocks me uh from time to time you mentioned i don't go anywhere i'm
03:11actually
03:11uh leaving to go to ireland on a golf trip uh here on monday yeah but uh my wife and
03:19i we went to
03:19greece on our honeymoon and uh i'm i'm standing at the ruins there in athens greece and some guy walks
03:29up and says chipper fancy seeing you here um you know i've been i've been recognized in you know
03:36amsterdam mexico i mean a bunch of different places and that's all because you know you can
03:43get tbs you know anywhere in the world hey uh mauricio dubon from honduras he came up and asked
03:52me to sign a bat saying i was you know his favorite player growing up and his family always gathered
03:58around the the tv to watch braves games so grew up a huge braves fan that's all because of tbs
04:04yeah chipper jones with us um what about the part about getting more comfortable being a celeb and
04:09and you know uh how that has evolved over the years well um i had trouble adjusting to it early
04:19on in my career as has been well documented and then uh you know i i've learned how to say
04:25no and
04:26keep stuff at arm's length and now i think that i'm done playing there's more appreciation for it just
04:34because um there's so many people that come up and say hey you know thank you for you know
04:42providing us entertainment for for two decades you know there were so many instances around the
04:50coffee table or around uh the dinner table or in my car uh listening to the radio that uh you
04:59and
04:59your buddies kind of provided us with so many good times and so many good memories and i just want
05:05to say thank you there's a really a cool appreciation and i don't keep that at arm's length anymore i
05:11welcome that in and and you know have a conversation with them and ask them where they're from and how
05:16big the family is and tell the family i said hello so i'm a lot more uh accepting of the
05:22attention
05:22now than i used to be tripper jones with us sports radio 92 90 game how impressed are you
05:27with the brave start we'll stand on the offensive side um but obviously to watch some of these guys
05:33that you worked with a little bit and to see how we've come out of the gate as we head
05:37to la how
05:37impressed are you that's funny sandy asked me to come on this morning and you know the braves hot
05:44start and when you know they they they lose their first series so we might blame you a little bit
05:50yeah so um but no uh seattle has a tremendous pitching staff new runs were going to be at a
05:57premium in that series and and they just uh you know they they got to us a little bit but
06:02i think
06:03i've been very impressed with the uh depth of this ball club i said it during spring training you don't
06:10go
06:10out and win 20 plus games in spring training if you are not deep and i'm not just talking about
06:16the
06:16pitching staff but the the everyday lineup as well the bullpen um and and you're starting to see it
06:23there are guys that uh you know coming into spring training we had we were never going to uh think
06:32that we were going to have to rely on on certain guys to to be big contributors through the first
06:39quarter of the season then you're seeing that you know guys at the back end of the rotation
06:44are making uh big contributions um guys that have been called up from triple a are making uh big
06:52time contributions and you know you've seen the depth of this lineup throughout the first 40 games
06:58and and how many runs they've scored i think we're leading all the baseball and runs scored and we
07:03really haven't had you know that that big uh stretch where acuna and riley have uh have been
07:12consistently outstanding so um yeah i mean hopefully you know when when riley gets uh gets it going
07:21consistently and we get uh ronnie back uh we'll see we'll see this uh this lineup on all his cylinders
07:28can you pinpoint what's going on with austin and has he reached out at all to you
07:34we talked a little bit um i went down last homestand and uh just had a talk to him and
07:42i really wanted
07:43to just kind of see where his head was at and he's he's pretty frustrated but overall he says um
07:49he's
07:49happy with his approach he's he's he's getting pitches that um he's looking for and just missing
07:58him and we always go through periods during the course of the season it it's it's it's big right
08:05now because it's at the beginning of the season and he's coming off a season where he was hurt
08:09but um and i i really can't say anything if he thinks his approach is good and he's just missing
08:15pitches he's not going to miss those pitches all year and somebody's going to pay for you know this
08:21this little slump that he's in right now and here's you see glimpses of it you know with the homer
08:27or a
08:28double in the gap but still way too much swing and miss uh for everybody's liking i believe and
08:34and hopefully he'll uh you know bounce back out of that in a big way here pretty soon hall of
08:40famer
08:41chipper jones with us on sports radio 92.9 uh you certainly um understand hitting and not that you get
08:47start you know not that you get awed by anybody but when you watch olsen and just the combination
08:53of skills that he's bringing to the table particularly this year what do you think about
08:58when you watch him as a baseball player um i think he's made a couple of subtle adjustments
09:05in his um setup that is contributing to his ability to be able to drive the ball out of the
09:12ballpark
09:13from foul pole to foul pole and we always talk about approach we always want to hunt uh something hard
09:19out over the plate where guys can get extended but you have to drive the ball to the off gap
09:25so we
09:26want to see you know those balls being driven out of the you know into the gap and out of
09:31the ballpark
09:32uh to the off gap and then you know those those little slippy breaking balls and changes that they
09:38throw for strikes those are the ones that we clip to the to the full stop and he is on
09:45it right now man
09:46he's um you know he's kind of i don't know if you guys have seen he's turned his front foot
09:52in
09:54pretty severely uh at the plate and he's keeping his front hip in keeping it from flying which has
10:00always been his problem spinning off the ball towards the first base dugout and uh he's staying
10:05closed and letting ball travel and that ball that he hit out in the ninth inning uh two nights ago
10:11to
10:11to win the game was exactly what you know what those guys to do on a daily basis you know
10:17i think
10:20where where austin is in his mindset and where holy is in his mindset complete polar opposites you know
10:30just different ends of the spectrum right now you got a guy who's not you know kind of down on
10:35his
10:35confidence and then you got one guy who's you know at the peak of confidence and uh it's it's
10:42pretty uh it's great to uh watch him start hopefully in an mvp uh type of run here yeah numbers
10:51leading
10:51the majors in five or six different categories uh run score doubles home runs he's hitting over 300
10:57uh what do you think a couple other quick guys obviously drake baldwin nobody i think he anticipated
11:02you know his hitting prowess at this point's year two and even the job that dubon has done uh which
11:10been a huge part of the start as well yeah you could argue that uh mauricio dubon might be
11:18first or second most valuable player on this team just for the simple fact that
11:24how he's produced when has been on in scoring position and the fact that he's a swiss army knife
11:30you know in the field can play the infield can play the outfield uh has really given um you know
11:37walked the ability to be versatile you know throughout his throughout the lineup drake baldwin's
11:44an absolute freaking stud you know um he does everything that i teach that i would teach a 10 year
11:53old
11:53a 15 year old a 20 year old i mean he he he's got great tactics on amazon a long
11:59time can hit from
12:00power to all fields um selective uh i'm doing a great job uh winning catches behind the plate
12:08um just ask instead but i mean the big contributions from michael harris has gotten off to a great start
12:14uh i think albis is bouncing back and healthy with that risk problem that he had last year and
12:21you're starting to see what guys you know are truly capable of number one when they're healthy
12:26number two when they haven't finished finishing up with chipper jones ernie johnson jr coming up uh
12:32in a few minutes as well everybody on sports radio 92.9 the game all right you gotta uh you
12:37have no
12:37choice you gotta spend the next two years being full-time in baseball here are your three options
12:43you can be a broadcaster of 162 games you can be a hitting coach or you can be a manager
12:48you have
12:48no choice which of those three would you take on oh i think uh i think i'm gonna go where
12:56i'm most
12:57knowledgeable and most experienced and and i would probably be um hitting coach um i i love the
13:07interaction with the guys um it's you know it's not every day but i still cover those uh opportunities
13:15to go down in the cage and work with them and then see the light come on for for some
13:20of them um
13:21throughout some of our our our talks and whatnot um i feel like if i was a broadcaster i would
13:29probably
13:30run out of things to say i would run out of stories to tell so you know kind of stale
13:36maybe a little bit
13:37boring and uh you know managing in this day and age i just i i i can't see me doing
13:44a very good job
13:46why do you say that why do you say that uh just because i got i got too much bobby
13:51cock to me and um
13:53you know the patience for uh the load management portion of how you would have to
14:08certain certain players nowadays well i think listen i mean walt's pretty old school hard-nosed
14:16as well and i'd argue you'd figure out a way to get through it as being an ex-player but
14:20but waltty
14:21waltty is very patient and waltty is very good with the media and i'm not sure how good i would
14:27be
14:27on a daily basis with the media that's a good uh analysis hey uh enjoy uh ireland you guys is
14:33a boys trip uh playing a bunch of courses it is we're playing six different courses i'm going over
14:40actually i'm going over actually with a couple of uh georgia bulldogs that i would like to say
14:46hi to paulie esteridge who's the uh who's the uh uh offensive coordinator for marist high school
14:54and ex uh georgia bulldog tight end and then uh ex georgia bulldog from parkview uh matt cavender
15:03played played baseball in georgia so i'm gonna hang out with them and uh have a good time how's your
15:08game what's what are you shooting these days uh i'm about a four or five handicapped so i'm you know
15:14mid mid high 70s i guess well the beers and the competition and the smack talk will be plenty
15:21um enjoy ireland that's a great trip to take thanks for coming on always a pleasure chipper
15:27appreciate it guys good talking to y'all all right chipper jones joining us there um on sports radio
15:3392.9 the game a little bit of a rough signal on some of the stuff but very interesting yeah
15:37he's just so
15:38good and his insight and um listen he's very tight with austin riley so yeah it's interesting to hear
15:46him say i'm not going to say here's what i'm looking for if in fact he thinks his swing is
15:50correct also
15:51to think that he could not be a major league manager he does not have the patience for it which
15:55is very
15:55agree yeah um i disagree with his broadcast uh pedigree i think he's so good in that booth he's amazing
16:01oh
16:02my god he's got 17 years in the whatever many years in the bigs he doesn't realize how many
16:07stories he has here's a story for every milk and cranny he'd be amazing and he is amazing when he
16:13does it so good and maybe that's what we get is that once in a while he doesn't want to
16:17do any of
16:17them but how about him world traveler i love the fact that he's just going and doing and fun
